Street Trading: Lawmaker applauds Abia Govt for drastic action

Abia State Government has been applauded for the initiative to move traders into designated markets in the State to ensure public safety and proper statistical planning.

 

The House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Trade, Industry and Investment, Hon. Munachim Alozie who stated this in an interaction with newsmen said the move to rid the State of indicriminate street trading will not only enhance the aesthetics of the environment but will ensure orderliness within the affected areas.

Hon. Alozie who is also the member representing Ugwunagbo State Constituency further hinted that the demolition of unwanted structures within the Enyimba area of the Ariaria International Market should be extended to Ngwa Road in Aba, Akanu Ibiam-Bank Road and Co-operative axis in Umuahia as every area cannot be turned in market places.

 

The Lawmaker added that public safety will be enhanced as the actual enumeration of traders will be more accurate, with internally generated revenue increased when the traders comply with Government’s directive via evacuation of Abia Streets of the menace of street trading.

Hon. Alozie, however, called on relevant revenue generating agencies to assist in the area of documentation of traders, which he said will enhance proper planning and make handy business statistical data for swift Government action to make the environment conducive for businesses to thrive.
