The Member representing Umunneochi State Constituency at the Abia state House of Assembly,and Chairman Committee on Agriculture,
Barr Okey Igwe has described Agriculture as the catalyst needed to trigger the next industrial revolution in the national and state economy.
Barr Igwe stated this at Umuosu Nsulu,Isiala Ngwa North LGA during the official Commissioning of the 55,500 capacity Abia Poultry Cluster for the Abia central senatorial zone, built by the Abia State government in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria,(CBN)under the Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme(AADS).
According to him, “Agriculture is the engine that powers the economy so, for a country that has lost its economic soul after the discovery of oil, Agriculture remains the key to unlocking the economic potential of the state and the country in general”.
He guaranteed that the House Committee on Agriculture under his leadership will trigger the next industrial revolution by harnessing the various value chains in the agricultural sector to solve the unemployment problems of teeming youths.
“As the House Committee Chairman,on Agriculture,it is incumbent on me to bring forward bills that will bring out the different components of Agriculture and galvanise it so that we can really open up the agricultural value chain”.
While commending Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his agricultural revolution across the state, the legislator noted that the youths at the Agric Cluster will be taught the rudiments of Poultry farming ,feed production among others which he said will make them self reliant as well as stem the tide of unemployment,crime and other social vices.
Barr Igwe assured that the 7th Abia House of Assembly is poised to give legislative backing as well as provide the necessary legal framework to facilitate agricultural entrepreneurship in Abia State.
The newly commissioned Abia Poultry cluster comprises of an administrative building containing 3 training halls,26 office rooms, including self contained rooms that will house the trainees as well as 69 Poultry pens with 55,500 birds capacity.
