The Abia State House of Assembly has constituted twenty five different committees to carryout oversight functions for the House.
Announcing the committees and its members during plenary, the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji urged them to ensure they take oversight functions seriously.
He further advised the committees to carryout their functions without fear of any intimidation as recommendations from its findings would be put to use and encouraged the earlier established adhoc committees to also continue with their duties.
Speaker, however, enjoined his colleagues not to allow themselves to be cowed, intimidated or succumb to blackmail from any quarters in the discharge of their legislative duties particularly their oversight functions.
“Our oversight functions are constitutional responsibilities placed on us by the people we represent through the laws of our land. We must discharge that function with the utmost sense of responsibility, dedication, courage and determination to do the right things without fear or favour.
“At no time should we allow ourselves to be swayed by those who want to blackmail and intimidate us into silence and legislative indolence”, he concluded.
Meanwhile, the House which also embarked on its annual recess to resume on September 23, 2019, has the following committees announced by the Speaker:
