2019 AFCON: Super Eagles Battle Algeria

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Desert Foxes of Algeria for a place in the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, today.

To get to the semi-finals, the three time African champion eliminated the 1996 champions, Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-1, while Algeria, who defeated Nigeria when they won their first and only AFCON title in 1990, qualified for the semi-finals after they eliminated 1992 and 2015 champions, Ivory Coast 4-3 on penalties after full and extra time had ended goalless.

When Nigeria won her first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, the Green Eagles as the Super Eagles were then called, defeated Algeria 3-0.

In all, Nigeria and Algeria have met eight times in the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria have won four times while Algeria have won three times as well. They have settled for a draw in one ocassion.

This encounter will surely be explosive as Algeria have not lost any match so far. It was until the quarter-finals against Ivory Coast that they conceded their first goal.

On the other hand, the Super eagles have gained more confidence after they eliminated the defending champion, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and South Africa, who had eliminated host, Egypt in the round of 16.

The first semi-final match today will see the Teranga Lions of Senegal, who are still seeking for their first AFCON title take on 2004 champions, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
