8th Assembly: We’ll Enact Laws For Wellbeing Of Abians- Speaker

The newly elected Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, has assured that the 8th Assembly will enact Laws that will enhance the wellbeing of Abians, as well as support the executive arm of government.


Rising from the Proclamation of the 8th Assembly by the State Governor and the inauguration of the 24 members elect, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, who is representing Aba South State Constituency, under the platform of the Labour Party, Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, while expressing gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed on him, pledged to serve Abians with unwavering dedication and commitment.

He added that the 8th House of Assembly will legislate good laws that would promote peace,as well aid development of the State.


The emergence of the Speaker followed his nomination by the member representing Aba Central state constituency, Mr Stephen Akachukwu and seconded by the member representing Umuahia South, Hon. Emeka Obioma.

The House equally elected and sworn in the member representing Umuahia East State Constituency, Hon Okezie Augustine Nmeregini, as the deputy Speaker, amidst agitations from the opposition party, PDP.

However, the inuaguration witnessed a rowdy section, following the refusal of the Clerk of the house, Mr JohnPedro Irokansi, to accept nominations from members of the Peoples’s Democratic Party (PDP).


The members representing Obingwa East and Ohafia North State Constituencies, Hon Solomon Akpulonu and Hon Mandela Obasi, respectively, both ranking members of the opposition party, PDP, took to chagrin,when the Clerk of the House, barred them from making nominations for their preferred candidates.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the State, Dr Alex Otti, giving his speech at the Assembly Complex, congratulated members of the newly inaugurated 8th Abia State House of Assembly, for exhibiting maturity leading to the emergence of Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa and Rt Hon Okezie Augustine Nmeregini, as Speaker and deputy Speaker respectively.

Governor Otti, reminded them of the enormous responsibilities and expectations of the people who voted them into power, noting that they were voted to serve the people and therefore, can not afford to disappoint them.

Otti who used the occasion to renew his administration’s avowed commitment to serving the Abia people better, also extended his hands of fellowship to members of the opposition party and called on them to join hands with his government to deliver democracy dividends to the people of the state.

He prayed God to direct the newly inaugurated members of the 8th House, to preside over the Affairs of the people and for the smooth running of the government.

Recall that Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa was the former Executive Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area of the State and has served in various capacities under past PDP administrations in the state.

He is an indigene of Aba South LGA and he is married with children.
