Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half to give the Super Eagles of Nigeria a 2-0 victory over the Amavubi of Rwanda on match day five of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
This is Nigeria’s first victory in the qualifiers and it has resurrected Nigeria’s hope of qualifying for the World Cup, though qualification is still a long way to go.
Before the match the Super Eagles of Nigeria have only three points from four matches and were placed 5th in a six team group.
With this victory, Nigeria are now fourth and are a point behind Rwanda, two behind Benin Republic who were forced to a 2-2 draw by Zimbabwe yesterday and four points behind group leaders South Africa, who defeated Lesotho 2-0 this evening.
This victory is also a relief for Super Eagles new head coach Eric Chelle, whose ability to lead the team have been questioned even before his baptism of fire.
Next Tuesday, the Super Eagles will host the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium for the round six matches.
A victory for Nigeria will give them nine points and a victory for Benin against South Africa will halt rampaging South Africa and leave both Benin and South Africa a point ahead of Nigeria.
