Defending champions, the Teranga Lions of Senegal defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria by a lone goal in their opening match of the ongoing African Nations Championship.
Christian Gomis’ second half strike was the difference between the two West African giants. The match did not live up to expectation as both sides lacked composure and lost the ball easily. Senegal will not bother much; after all they have taken all three points.
While Senegal lead the group, Nigeria are bottom ahead of their second group match next Tuesday.
Earlier, Congo and Sudan played out a tense 1-1 draw in the opening Group D fixture at the Amani Stadium.
Musa Hussein opened scoring for the Sudanese in the 29th minute but Congo equalized four minutes from full time through Carly Ekongo.
The goal marks Congo’s first goal in open play in over three CHAN matches, ending a scoreless drought that dated back to 2020.
Sudan on their part have gone five matches without a win, but could take consolation that this result is an improvement over their disastrous performance in the 2022 edition.
Congo will take on defending champions Senegal, who could qualify for the knockout stage with a match to spare if they defeat the Congolese while Sudan will confront wounded Super Eagles.
