South Africa and Uganda grabbed precious victories in their Group C matches in the ongoing African Nations Championship.
South Africa bounced back to winning ways with a hard earned 2-1 victory over Niger Republic at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium on Monday.
Goals from Neo Maema and Thabiso Kutumela secured Bafana Bafana’s first win of the tournament, lifting them off the foot of Group C.
Moussa Camara had restored parity in the first half before South Africa killed off the game with the second goal.
The result moves South Africa into contention with four points while Guinea will have to win their remaining matches and hope that other results go their way to remain in contention for the knockout stage.
In the group’s other match Uganda ascended to the top of Group C with a 2-0 victory over Niger Republic.
Allan Okello put the hosts in front midway through the first half after he missed a penalty.
Joel Sserunjogi put the icing on the cake with an emphatic finish just before the hour.
The result takes Uganda to six points from three matches, ahead of Algeria, South Africa and Guinea, with Niger bottom on zero.
