Nigeria won their last group match with a 2-0 victory over Congo as both teams exited the competition.
Nigeria were already eliminated after losing their first two matches 1-0 to Senegal and 4-0 to Sudan. But having secured draws with both opponents Congo had a chance of reaching the last eight, but they had to defeat the Super Eagles-a mission they failed to accomplish.
After a goalless first half, Nigeria opened scoring in the 56th minute through a swift move that saw Alimi nod the ball down into the path of Anas Yusuf, who found the net from close range to give the team their first goal of the tournament.
Charles Atipo saw his initial yellow card upgraded to red card after VAR review to reduce the Red Devils to 10-men.
Alimi then scored in the 93rd minute to give Nigeria a win for pride.
In the group’s other match played simultaneously, Sudan and Senegal settled for a goalless draw as both teams complete the quarter-finalists.
