2023: Enugu East APC Senatorial Candidate Makes Case For More Women In Politics

ENUGU–The All Progressives Congress (APC) Senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Princess Ada Ogbu, has emphasized that more women should be in the governance of the country.

Princess Ogbu stated this on Friday when she gave salient remarks at the inaugural symposium of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria, Enugu State chapter themed, “Towards inclusion: which way for the Nigeria Women?”

Princess Ogbu, from the Nara Unataeze Royal family, noted that the upcoming 2023 General Election is a prime opportunity for citizens to contribute towards a more inclusive and sustainable democracy in Nigeria, and one key way to do so will be by voting massively for credible female candidates.

According to the APC Senatorial candidate, supporting more women in next year’s election and beyond will help to reverse the abysmal levels of female participation and representation in political decision-making processes and in other political spaces at all levels.

She maintained her long running point that there is significant and hitherto untapped value in bringing more women into and around the decision-making table.

The Senatorial candidate expressed joy to be amongst the women lawyers, adding that her father had wanted her to study Law because of her vocal stance against the marginalized and the oppressed around her.

“I stand here as a woman, a woman who is always at the table where issues are discussed. We need more women to get involved,” she said.

Princess Ogbu continued “affirmative action for women was thrown away because we didn’t have enough women at the National Assembly.  We have the voice, the willpower, the strength and the numbers to make a difference.”

According to her, “the only way to positively affect women is to elect a woman that can understand and effectively represent them. It is very important for us as a people to ensure that women are placed in a position to serve because that’s what they know how to do best.”

She emphasized human capacity development, noting that it is one of the best ways to bring development to the society.

In a remark at the event, the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Anglican Communion, the Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma, said he was elated that Princess Ada is coming out to run for an elective position.

Archbishop Chukwuma said he was particularly satisfied with her personality, urging people to forget about party instead ask questions about the personality & character of the individual coming out to lead them.
