An abominable act was committed by a 19-year-old girl identified as Onyemauche Nwabueze who terminated an eight-month pregnancy in Nkwebi Community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. The community discovered the dastardly act after the girl had succeeded in aborting the baby.
According to the story, the young girl, an apprentice in the locality who lives with her grandmother cleverly concealed the pregnancy for eight months. She hatched a plan that makes her leave the house very early in the morning and come back late, and in that process avoided the attention of her grandmother and neighbours.
When she could no longer conceal the pregnancy as all attempts to abort the baby failed, she connived with one Madam Comfort Kalu Mong, a local Nurse, who induced her and aborted the baby.
In an attempt to conceal the evil act and escape undetected and unpunished, Miss Onyemauche put the now fully developed dead baby girl in a carton and in the dead of night, stowed out of their house in order to throw her into a pit.
Unfortunately, unknown to Onyemauche, the baby fell off the carton in process while she hurriedly sneaked back into the house.
However, the cat was let out of the bag the next morning, as Nkwebi Community woke up and noticed a large number of hens feasting on an unknown object. At this time, the attention of villagers was attracted and it was discovered that what the hens were feasting on was identified as the remains of a dead baby.
The Villagers gathered and raised an alarm while all “exits and entry” to the village were temporarily sealed. The elderly and experienced women began the search for the culprit. Onyemauche was caught and subjected to physical examination, among other signs, and these showed that the offender was lactating. She immediately confessed and it was also confirmed that she had also aborted two other pregnancies without being caught.
The Villagers were not just offended by the abomination but were dismayed because Onyemauche is the only child of her mother while her own mother is the only child of her grandmother.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that the Community finally fined Onyemauche the sum of three hundred thousand naira (300,000) while the local Nurse who was her accomplice was also fined One hundred and fifty thousand naira (150,000) to appease the gods and cleanse the land. They were also mandated to give the aborted baby full burial rites, the standard meant for an adult.
