NIMET Prediction: Abia Min Of Environment Moves To Avert Flooding

Following predictions by the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET),that Abia state is among high risk flood areas, the state ministry of Environment has declared zero tolerance to indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state.

 

 

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tony Nwamuo who spoke to Journalists while monitoring compliance to the monthly cleanup exercise, observed with dismay the total non compliance to sanitation in Aba and therefore invited the leadership of various parks in the area to a crucial meeting.

 

The Commissioner noted that his Ministry is making frantic efforts to ensure proper disilting of drainages and appropriate waste disposal.

“In pursuant to the annual flood report by the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET), Abia state has been slated as one of the areas that will be taken over by flood especially Aba and other LGAs so based on that, we are taking steps to avert that.

 

“We have declared zero tolerance to waste disposal. We are going to embark on sensitization programmes to make sure that appropriate disilting is executed”, Nwamuo said.

 

 

He therefore appealed to Aba residents to always participate in the monthly cleanup exercise in order to keep their environment clean noting that a clean environment is life and also extends life expectancy.

The Commissioner reminded the people that government will not fold it’s arms and watch defaulters go scott free adding that the long arm of the law will catch up with anyone who fails to comply with government directives.
