Umuahia environs to enjoy uninterrupted water as Abia govt reactivates scheme

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia state capital will soon enjoy uninterrupted water supply as the state Ministry of Public Utilities and Water Resources is set to reactivate the pumping of pipeborne water in the urban and other semi-urban cities of the State by the end of September.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who gave the cheering news, Wednesday,while inspecting new equipments procured by the Ministry,said he was passionate about giving the populace clean water inline with his adminstration policy thrust of providing portable water to the citizenry of the State.


The Governor called on engineers of the Ministry to engage in capacity building that will ensure that the new equipments are maintained and also charged the Commissioner to maintain the relationship with funding agencies so as to continue enjoying their expertise assuring that his government will continue to meet its counterpart funding obligations to the agencies.

He directed his Chief of Staff, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere to station Civil Defence men in the premises of Public Utilities Ministry to protect the new installations.

Earlier while conducting the Governor round the premises of the Ministry of Public Utilities and Water Resources, Engr. Emma Nwabuko said that the State Government in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Bank are set to pump pipe borne water into the streets of Umuahia by the end of September.

The Commissioner said the state government has already completed four industrial wells which aid in pumping of water with a pump house, treatment plant, the installed a 500kva generator set, two solar energy banks for 24 hours regular water supply as well as the rehabilitation of some buildings including commercial building and pump house amongst others.

He added that the Ministry will soon commence the pumping raw water so as to identify burst water pipes and commended the Governor for his tremendous support to the Ministry.

Also speaking, the General Manager Abia Water Board, Engineer Ogbonna Chiemela, said that the Ministry has done a lot to prepare for the project so as to ensure its sustenability.
