One hundred and fifty-four candidates from Abia State have successfully passed the screening process for the 89th Regular Army Recruitment intake and are set to begin a six-month training program in Zaria and Oshogbo.
During a send-forth event at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Kenneth Kalu, congratulated the candidates and encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors for the state and the nation. Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the SSG, Dr. Godwin Okezue, Prof. Kalu advised the recruits to maintain discipline, integrity, and courage throughout their training.
“The state government has made all necessary provisions to ensure your smooth transition into this training phase,” Prof. Kalu stated, commending the Army officials for their diligence in the recruitment process.
Lieutenant Colonel Francis Isu, the officer in charge of the 89th Regular Intake, disclosed that out of 263 documented candidates, 154 were successful. The group comprises 138 males and 16 females. He detailed the phased movement plan, with 77 candidates departing for Zaria on June 26, while the remaining 77 will travel to Oshogbo for training on July 2.
Lt. Col. Isu noted some challenges encountered during the exercise, to include, a low turnout and fear of joining the military. He encouraged youths to overcome their apprehensions, emphasizing the Army’s role in personal development, career growth, and national service.
Nnenna Chekwas, Desk Officer for Army Recruitment in the Political Affairs Bureau, Office of the SSG, expressed satisfaction with the process, highlighting that this was the first time Abia State achieved such a high success rate of over 150 candidates.
Some of the successful candidates, including Ajaegbu Chinenye from Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Olanma Kalu Okorie from Atani Abam, Arochukwu LGA, and Ngozi Eze Solomon from Obingwa, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. They pledged to serve diligently and encouraged other youths to consider joining the Army, describing it as a rewarding career.
The candidates also appreciated Governor Alex Otti for his support throughout the recruitment process, which they credited as instrumental in their success.
