An Abidjan-based Nigerian Businessman, Ikechukwu Nlewedim has urged Abia people not to distract Gov. Otti with unverified rumours of defection.

Nlewedim, the Chairman, Elohim Shipping Limited, Cote D’Ivoire, made the call while speaking to newsmen in Uyo.

He said that Otti had demonstrated uncommon understanding of the developmental needs of Abia, and should be allowed to focus on his job.

Nlewedin, a former President, Nigerian Youths in Cote d’Ivoire, further urged Abia people to support the Otti-led government to adequately unfold its people-oriented programmes in the interest of the ordinary citizens.

“We no longer need rocket science to know that God has given us a governor that is sane-headed and committed to the wellbeing of the people.

“Under his watch, things that seemed impossible in the past are being done easily. Abia people are happy. That is why I think that this defection rumour is an unnecessary distraction.

“The governor is very knowledgeable in politics, governance and administration. He is capable of taking the right decision in the interest of Abia people,” he state.

Nlewedim, an indigene of Ogbodi-Ukwu, Umuopara in Umuahia South, Local Government Area, said that the governor had performed excellently in all departments of governance.

The billionaire businessman said that the recruitment of no fewer 2,000 teachers and the raising of teachers retirement age to 65 are bold steps that only a patriotic leader could take.

He said that the governor had continued to implement reforms in infrastructure, education, healthcare, security among others.

“The governor’s interest is nothing but to ensure sustainable development in the state, we must give him the needed support to work,” he said.

It would be recalled that there have been speculations that Otti is planning to dump the Labour Party for the All Progressives Congress.

The post Don’t distract Otti with defection speculations – Nlewedim urges Abians first appeared on National Ambassador News.

Governor Alex Otti has sworn in Edo State-born Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service in Abia State. The Commissioner for Information, Prince…

Governor Alex Otti has sworn in Edo State-born Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Head of Service in Abia State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this year’s maiden Executive Council briefing chaired by Governor Otti.

Prince Kanu noted that the unprecedented appointment of Mr. Ojeikere underscores the Governor’s belief in the principle that all residents of Abia, regardless of origin, are equal stakeholders in the state’s progress.

He disclosed that Mr. Ojeikere, who distinguished himself as the best NYSC corps member in Abia State during the 1999/2000 service year, was retained by the then government. Adding that over the years, the new Head of Service has risen through the ranks, serving as director and permanent secretary before his elevation to the topmost civil service position.

“This is a landmark appointment given the fact that he (Mr. Ojeikere) is not from the state but, like I said, because His Excellency believes in meritocracy and that there’s no divided line between an Abia citizen and a resident. Once you are living in Abia State, you’re part and parcel of the state,” Prince Kanu stated.

Prince Kanu described Mr. Ojeikere as an exemplary leader who will leverage his extensive experience to strengthen the Abia State Civil Service.

“Mr. Ojeikere is an exemplary character who would bring his wealth of experience gathered over these years to bear on the Abia Civil Service,” the Commissioner noted.

The Commissioner disclosed that the state government has officially launched the “Out-of-School Policy” with the reopening of schools today.

He said that a special taskforce has been established to enforce compliance with the initiative aimed at eradicating the phenomenon of out-of-school children in the state.

“The out-of-school policy of the state government has commenced officially with the reopening of schools today. A special taskforce to enforce compliance has been put in place by the state government.

“This policy is very dear to the heart of His Excellency, and his intention is to achieve zero tolerance for out-of-school children in the state.

“So, in the days ahead, this special taskforce will ensure the compliance of this policy that is directed to ensure that the indigenes of the state who are indigent for some reason or the other are not left behind in regard to education, which, of course, we know is the best way to empower people,” he said.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has pledged his administration’s unwavering commitment to honoring the sacrifices of veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces, emphasizing their vital role in safeguarding the nation.

Governor Otti made the pledge during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Church Service held at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia.

The Governor, who paid tribute to veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces, acknowledged their sacrifice, bravery, and dedication in service to the nation.

He also recalled the tragic cases of Armed Forces personnel who were brutally murdered in the state while performing their duties and vowed that the state government would honor their memory and ensure their sacrifices are not taken for granted.

“We want to thank those who ensure we sleep with our eyes closed; we cannot take your sacrifices for granted,” Otti said.

“There is nothing we can do that will be too much for these heroes of our time,” Otti added.

The Governor used the opportunity to thank Abians for their support of his administration and pledged that his government would continue to deliver democracy dividends to the people.

He noted that, irrespective of negative propaganda from the opposition, his administration remains focused on the mandate given to him by the people.

Governor Otti charged the people to remain vigilant and permanently “sack” those he described as pretending to fight for democracy.

“I want to charge all of us that this is the time for us to remain vigilant because if you say that the Egyptians you see today, you won’t see them anymore, like the Bible says, it doesn’t mean you should go to sleep; otherwise, the Egyptians will like to come back,” he said.

“So you have to permanently sack them, and it is not for me to do, it is for you to do. Power belongs to the people, but power belongs to God. God won’t come down from heaven; He will use you, like He has always used you.”

“So all the people who are pretending to be fighting for democracy today when they have been asleep in the last 24 to 25 years, I think we need to keep them permanently asleep,” he added.

Earlier, in a sermon titled “The Captain of the Host of Heaven,” the President of Abia North Central Conference, Rev. Kennedy Iheoma, paid tribute to fallen heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s peace and unity.

Rev. Ikechikwu, who took his text from Joshua 5:13–15, reflected on the encounter between Joshua, the Israelites, and the people of Jericho, emphasizing faith and trust in God.

He called on members of the Armed Forces to trust and acknowledge God’s supreme authority in order to overcome every challenge in life, pointing out that God cannot share His glory with anyone.

The 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Church Service, attended by the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilia Otti, among other dignitaries, featured prayers for members of the Armed Forces, the Governor, members of the State Executive Council, and Abia State.

Otti’s Transformative Achievements in Abia State’s Health Sector first appeared on National Ambassador News.

Since assuming office, Governor Alex Chioma Otti has made significant strides in the health sector. One of his notable achievements is the commissioning of a state-of-the-art multipurpose hospital in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, which was built through the office of the Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs). This 100-bed facility is equipped with world-class medical facilities and services, aiming to reduce maternal and child mortality rates. The Governor’s efforts in the health sector have been recognized for aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG5 (Gender Equality).

In addition to this, Governor Otti’s administration has renovated healthcare facilities. Three general hospitals have been renovated, and he stopped at nothing to ensure that accreditation for the teaching hospital, which had been lost for five years, was restored. This enabled the training of 60 house officers and increased the college quota by 25%.

He also ensured that healthcare infrastructure was improved by establishing one comprehensive health facility per local government, demonstrating his commitment to accessible healthcare.

Governor Otti also launched the Medical City Project, aimed at revitalizing the health sector and generating employment opportunities within the state.

He activated the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme, ensuring that healthcare services are affordable and accessible to all citizens.

He made a significant stride in upgrading health facilities in Abia State. One notable example is the renovation of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba. The hospital’s renovation was completed within a remarkably short period of two months. Although there’s some debate about who initiated the renovation, with some attributing it to the previous administration, the current government’s efforts have undoubtedly improved the facility.

The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Amachara General Hospital were not left out. The retrofitting of these hospitals was part of his administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery in Abia State. The duo was reopened after renovation, with the Governor noting that the Amachara General Hospital, which was first opened in 1932, had been allowed to decay and dilapidate. The renovation included the completion and equipping of various departments such as the Eye Clinic, now comparable to the best anywhere in the country, the General Outpatient Department, and the Accident and Emergency Department.

Governor Otti’s administration has also launched a Free Medical Service Initiative, providing diagnostics, laboratory services, counseling, and drug supply to thousands of Abians in rural and urban communities.

The state government plans to build 200 primary health centers across the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to strengthen healthcare delivery, especially in rural communities. These initiatives and more have demonstrated Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s commitment to improving and prioritizing healthcare development and infrastructure in Abia State.

Additionally, Governor Otti has allocated 35% of the 2025 annual budget to both healthcare and education, demonstrating his commitment to enhancing the state’s healthcare infrastructure. It’s clear that the state government is prioritizing the health sector. The health sector will likely benefit from this increased investment, with projects such as the rehabilitation of 200 primary healthcare facilities across the state.

The post Gov.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed into law a budget of Seven Hundred and Fifty Billion, Two Hundred and Eighty-Two Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira (₦750,282,200,000) for the 2025 fiscal year.

Speaking while assenting to the bill passed by the Abia State House of Assembly, Governor Otti commended the lawmakers for their diligence in scrutinizing and passing the appropriation bill promptly.

He described the budget as a tool that would empower his administration to deliver on its promises to the people of Abia State, drive infrastructural development, and sustain economic growth.

“I want to thank, specially, the House members and the leadership of the House for doing such a thorough job in record time. I want to commend you for being thorough. That’s actually what our government is about.

“We pride ourselves as a serious-minded government, so anything we present, we are ready for scrutiny. I want to thank you for the great job you did in scrutinizing the budget, disagreeing in a few areas, and also being flexible enough to accept when reasonable responses are given,” Otti stated.

The Governor noted that the 2025 budget, tagged the “Budget of Sustained Momentum,” marks a deliberate effort to continue the developmental strides initiated by his administration in its first year.

“When we say sustained momentum, we know that we have taken off, and the challenge is to continue because the easiest thing to do is to accelerate and decelerate.

“We can assure you that this government has its eyes on the ball and will continue to do those things we promised our people that will take this state out of poverty and remove its status as one of the dirtiest states, like it was in 2023,” he added.

While highlighting his administration’s focus on infrastructure, the Governor revealed that 82% of the budget is allocated to capital expenditure, leaving 18% for recurrent expenses.

He noted that this allocation demonstrates his government’s priority to invest in projects that will outlast his administration and transform the state, despite the challenges of higher wages occasioned by the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage and the regular payment of pensions.

“Our push for infrastructural development is demonstrated in this budget because when you have capital expenditure over 80 percent, it speaks to what you want to do with infrastructure—things that would outlast all of us,” he stated.

Governor Otti also disclosed that ongoing projects initiated in 2023—including Port Harcourt Road, Aba; Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abiriba-Ohafia Road; Ohafia-Arochukwu Road to Ini boundary; Okobo-Abam Road; Omenuko Bridge; Nunya Road; construction and rehabilitation of hospitals, schools, and other critical infrastructure—would be completed in 2025.

Earlier, while presenting the budget to the Governor, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described it as an “aggressive budget” designed to propel Abia State forward.

He assured that the Legislature would continue to collaborate with the Executive arm to ensure the state progresses from strength to strength.

Few weeks after work began on the 67-kilometer Umuahia- Uzuakoli -Ohafia road, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the 30 Kilometre Arochukwu Ndiokereke-Ozuabam road.

The road which is expected to be completed within 12 months, would revive agricultural and business activities in the Abia North Senatorial zone and attract investments.

Speaking at the event held at Amuvi Arochukwu LGA, Governor Otti who titled his speech; “Beyond Roads; Creating New Pathways For Social And Economic Development”, assured citizens of his administration’s commitment to ensuring even development and enhancing the living conditions of the people across rural and urban communities.

The Governor highlighted the lost economic opportunities as a result of the terrible state of some of the most economically viable roads in the state due to neglect adding that not much was done by past administrations to address these challenges in several rural communities and urban centers.

He emphasized the significant losses incurred by farmers due to difficulties in transporting produce to markets, as well as the adverse impact on businesses in urban areas, and pointed out that “the cost of this neglect on the economy of the state in terms of lost opportunities cannot be quantified”.

Governor Otti said that his administration prioritized road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance as crucial steps toward revitalizing the state’s economy.

“As a government that made a covenant to bring succor to the people after many years of frustrations, we knew that road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance must be made major priorities long before we took our oath of office.

“Starting with some of the most strategic roads in Aba and Umuahia, we are now expanding the scope to cover roads that connect our agricultural zones to the urban areas in other to boost the state agricultural output and expand our economic corridors to create jobs for thousands of our young people while taming rural-urban migration.

“Coming just weeks after work began on the 67-kilometer Umuahia- Uzuakoli -Ohafia road, the clear message is that no part of the state shall be left behind in our push to expand the frontiers of economic and social opportunities for individuals, families, and businesses”, Gov Otti said.

Governor Otti further highlighted collaborative efforts with the federal government to address infrastructure challenges, including discussions to fast-track the reconstruction of the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia road.

“We have started discussions on the next way that the Federal government can send the contractors to the site.

“So while the state is doing its own, we are also partnering with the federal government to do their own and I have the assurance that work would soon start on that corridor”, Otti assured.

The Governor while stressing the importance of utilizing taxpayers’ money effectively to engage reputable contractors who would deliver long-lasting projects to Abians, urged citizens and businesses to fulfill their financial obligations, including timely payment of taxes, to sustain ongoing development initiatives and warned against vandalization of government properties.

In an address earlier, the Commissioner for Works Mr Otumchere Oti noted that the 30-kilometer road, awarded to a reputable company The JEND Construction company is expected to be delivered according to specifications and in record time.

“We have decided that at any point, if you get into the state you will know that you have entered Abia State and that is why we have started the dualization of the Owerrinta Umuikaa road.

“We thought we should not stop it at Umuikaa, we now also extended the dualization from Umuikaa all the way to Umuene and from Umuene we will bring it into Umuoba.

“We are also dualising the Onuimo road, moving it to join the Tower to Okpara square and already it is receiving serious attention.

“The whole idea is to open up our places so that people can have access”, Governor Otti noted.

Governor Otti further announced that the present administration has a robust programme to support Agriculture and revealed ongoing efforts with partners from the Hungarian Government and CSS farms in Abuja to enhance agricultural productivity, with the goal of not only feeding Abia State but also contributing to national food security.

While thanking the people for celebrating him, Governor Otti who admitted that accepting such celebrations was initially a difficult decision for him, said; “I do not want be celebrated as such.

“The truth is that it is still early stage and somehow, I try to run away from events like this because if you don’t caution yourself, it is possible to derail. It is possible for you to begin to seek and clog the media, it is possible to start celebrating what does not exist.

“We are all from this state and we know that crowds like this were not unavailable in the previous administration when the state was decaying”.

Governor Otti pointed out that he has intensified efforts towards developing the state, and affirmed his administration’s resilience and dedication to governance despite the challenges faced in the past months, including legal battles.

“If you watch me carefully and if you listened to me, I said we will settle down and start the work of governance. What that means is that we have not even started.

“What you have seen in the last eight months is what the Englishman will call dress rehearsal. My definition of leadership is stewardship. Our concentration will be more than doubled”, the Governor affirmed.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for making the country proud at the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

Gov Otti in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Ukoh, said even though the Super Eagles came short of lifting the trophy, the players gave their best and succeeded in further strengthening the nation’s image as a formidable force in African football.

Host, Cote d’Ivoire, came from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 at the final of the biennial competition concluded inside the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, capital of Cote d’ivoire, on Sunday.

Governor Otti commended the Super Eagles for their unrelenting show of strength despite the intimidating roars of the home crowd, who dominated every inch of the stadium space, buoyed by the presence of the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara.

He specifically congratulated Samuel Chukwueze, Kenneth Omeruo and Frank Ogochukwu Onyeka, three sons of Abia State, who were part of the Super Eagles team to the AFCON 2023.

The Governor praised Chukwueze for providing the assist that saw the team captain, Troost Ekong, put Nigeria in the lead with a header, shortly before the end of the first half of the game.

While thanking Nigerians for the massive support they gave to the Super Eagles throughout the competition, Governor Otti also commended the team’s technical crew and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for their efforts which helped to take Nigeria to the finals of the AFCON.

After qualifying from the group stage, the Nigeria Super Eagles went on to beat the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16, the Antelopes of Angola in the quarter final and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semi-final before succumbing to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the final.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the 67 Kilometer Umuahia-Uzuakoli- Abiriba- Ohafia Road, with a pledge to address the longstanding infrastructure deficit in the state and rehabilitate key road networks.

The road which serves as a vital link to Abia North Senatorial District, has suffered from long years of neglect, causing significant hardship for both farmers and commuters who struggle to access various locations due to the poor state of the road.

The road project which is divided into three sections, would be handled by different contractors with Cranberg assigned to the Umuahia-Uzuakoli stretch, Ferotex to the Uzuakoli-Isukwato Akara Junction, and CCECC tasked with handling the Akara Junction-Ohafia axis.

Speaking while flagging off the three sections of the road project, Governor Otti described the occasion as part of his campaign to fix Abia and end her years of infrastructural decay.

The Governor explained that the selection of three contractors to handle the the different sections of the roads is to enable the state government complete the project on time as his administration is in a hurry to recover lost ground.

“Today, alot of our young ones have involved themselves in consuming illicit substances that makes them behave abnormally.

“No amount of alcoholism, drug addiction or whatever it is that you have consumed will justify any action that you have taken that is against the law. And for us, we are single minded about rooting out crime and criminality to ensure that our state is safe for our citizens and our visitors”, the Governor stated.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has restored the accreditation of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) to graduate medical students, close to three years after the accreditation was withdrawn.

The good news was communicated to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, late Thursday night, after the Accreditation Team of the MDCN, who had been in Abia to inspect the state of facilities and other prerequisites had concluded their visit and reached a verdict.

“We just concluded our meeting with the team. To the glory of God, we have full accreditation to graduate medical students for the next five years; increase in our admission quota from 120 to 150 per session; renewed accreditation to train 60 house officers per annum for the next four years. The number can be increased if we employ more full time consultants in the department of paediatrics.

“Thanks immensely. We are most grateful to the Executive Governor and to you. Remain blessed,” read a message sent to Dr Okoronkwo by a member of the Abia State University Accreditation Committee, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Maxwell Ogbulu.

Meanwhile, Governor Otti has sworn that never again would the State’s apex health learning institution, ABSUTH, be allowed to lose its accreditation by the regulatory authorities.

Governor Otti spoke on Thursday when he received the Accreditation Team of the MDCN, who had visited him at Nvosi, Isialangwa, as matter of courtesy.

“Never again should it happen that we will lose accreditation, it’s a big shame. I was not in government when it happened, but I saw it coming, and I wrote; I wrote to the former Governor.

“Before the accreditation was withdrawn, I saw everything; lecturers were on strike, the whole place dilapidated, I actually lost a friend there. So, we can’t continue like that. As if I was being clairvoyant, it didn’t take long before the accreditation was withdrawn.

“I was very deliberate in ensuring that the accreditation was restored,” Governor Otti stated, while recalling the enormous work done by his administration to rehabilitate the facility and bring it up to standard.

The Governor assured that his government would look into all shortcomings identified by the accreditation team with a view to attending to them timeously. He said his administration would do it’s best to remedy the lapses, adding that the restoration of accreditation to ABSUTH was a major priority to his government.

Governor Otti remarked that the essence of governance is for the promotion of welfare and security of the people, hence the resolve of his administration to dedicate 20% and 15% of the state’s 2024 annual budget to education and health, respectively.

“That we’re able to deliver service to our people, for me, that is what is most critical. We have done a few things that some people ordinarily would not want to do, but if at the back of your mind you know that the essence of government is welfare and security of the people, that’s what government is all about

“So, if we dedicate 15% of our annual budget to healthcare, it’s not a favour, we’re just doing what we’re supposed to do. If we dedicate 20% to education, it’s also not a favour. It’s a responsibility,” he said.

The Governor also assured that his administration was committed to the proper staffing of all healthcare institutions in the state even as he stated that his focus was to ensure that Abians and residents had unhindered access to quality healthcare.

Governor Otti noted that the vision behind his government’s planned establishment of a Medical Village in the state was to reverse medical tourism, regretting that 1.6 billion Dollars was spent by Nigerians on medical tourism abroad, annually.

“Our vision is that we need to reverse medical tourism, not just in Abia but in Nigeria. If the numbers by the past administration (Federal) is anything to go, the country spends not less than 1.6 billion Dollars on medical tourism and no less than 50 to 60 percent of that money is spent in India. By the time we are done with our medical village, we are targeting 10 percent of 1.6 billion Dollars,” he said with an air of optimism.

Speaking earlier, the Registrar Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Tajudeen Adisa Sanusi, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma, thanked Governor Otti for the infrastructural uplift being witnessed in Abia State, but particularly in ABSUTH and other health institutions in the state.

He said that the council was impressed with the achievements recorded so far under Governor Otti, within a short period of assumption of office, adding that the Governor represents a ray of hope for Nigeria.

Dr Sanusi, who also commended Governor Otti for dedicating 20% and 15% of the 2024 annual budget to education and health, respectively, described it as the highest ever in the history of budgeting in Nigeria.

He said that Abia of today boasts of three accredited medical schools and made a case for mass recruitment of medical academic staff, technology- driven equipment, among other requirements, to ABSUTH.

Earlier, while introducing the team to the Governor, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, noted that the present administration met on ground a virtually-moribund health institutions across the state, and thanked the Governor for his keen interest in revamping and overhauling the health sector of the state.

The Vice Chancellor, Abia State University (ABSU), Professor Maxwell Ogbulu; the pioneer Provost, ABSUTH, Professor Akpuaka; the Acting Provost, ABSUTH, Associate Professor John Chikezie; and other management staff of the institution were present during the visit by the MDCN accreditation team.

Governor Otti made this known during a meeting with members of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria(MDCN) Accreditation Team in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor restated the commitment of the present government to ensuring that there would improved access to quality healthcare services in the state.

He also expressed the resolve of his administration to build a medical village that would provide quality Medicare and follow-up care to patients.

“Our vision is to reverse medical tourism not just in Abia, but in Nigeria.

“If the numbers by the past administration is anything to go by, the country spends not less than $ 1.6 billion on medical tourism and not less than 50 to 60 per cent of that money is spent in India.

“When we are done with our medical village, we are targeting 10 per cent of the $1.6 billion in Abia,” he added.

Governor Otti further said that the government allotted 15 and 20 per cent of the state’s 2024 budget to health and education, respectively, adding that this would drive the government’s efforts to transform the health and education sectors.

He said that the government was desirous to provide easy access to quality education, adding that plans were underway to commence a scholarship scheme to help the indigent have access to education as well as give free education to some level.

Otti also said that he had taken note of the issues pointed out by the MDCN accreditation team, which require urgent attention, and added that government would expedite action to ensure that they would be addressed.

He said that the government was making deliberate and intentional efforts to ensure that the accreditation of Abia State University Teaching Hospital was restored.

“Never again should it be heard that we will lose accreditation,” Otti added.

The Registrar of MDCN, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, commended the government for its giant strides in the health sector, especially in the allocation of 15 per cent of the annual budget to health and decision to build a medical village.

Sanusi, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma, described it as a step in the right direction, which would help in reversing medical tourism.

He commended the government for its efforts in transforming the health sector and to secure re-accreditation for ABSUTH.

Sanusi said that as much as the government was desirous to continue the training of medical doctors in ABSUTH there were a few things that ought to be addressed.

He urged the government to conduct massive recruitment of appropriate medically qualified academic staff, build a clinical skills laboratory and provide modern medical equipment for learning.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, said that the government was implementing various innovations in the health sector to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare in Abia.

Okoronkwo said that the government would be establishing a medical village to boost healthcare delivery in the state, and added government would be conducting training and retraining of doctors to further drive its agenda in the health sector.

The Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Prof. Onyemachi Ogbulu, thanked the government for helping the institution to stay on track, adding that accreditation remains a vital factor for healthy progress to be recorded in every system.

Ogbulu added that the areas pointed out by the MDCN accreditation team, which need to be improved upon would be adequately addressed.

The post Gov Otti Aims To Reverse Medical Tourism, Pledges Resources To Transform Abia Healthcare Sector first appeared on National Ambassador News.

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has said that the state government is determined to build roads that will enhance trade and commerce in the state.

Governor Otti stated this on Sunday during the inauguration of the MCC/Old Express Road in Aba.

The Governor who also inaugurated the Udeagbala and Umuimo Roads in Aba, said that the state government considers building good quality roads as not only critical to improving vehicular movement, but to give businesses the enablement to thrive.

He also said that the government had awarded contracts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of some roads that were important to economic development.

“We cannot drive the kind of economic rejuvenation that we seek if our most important roads are in bad shape,” Otti added.

According to him, the reconstructed road was a testament that the government had began a holistic restoration of Aba and the state at large.

Otti said that “Aba is open for business” and called on potential investors to take advantage of the numerous opportunities that abound in the state.

“Our motivation in government is to create the right environment for individuals to live out the full expression of their dreams,

“We are also interested in supporting the growth of enterprises and setting up a safe haven for legitimately profitable and sustainable investments,” he said.

Otti restated the government’s commitment to evolving programmes and policies that would facilitate creation of best investment paths and partnerships which would further encourage government to serve the people better.

He further said that the government had taken steps to permanently address the issue of perennial flooding in Aba.

Otti said that the government had awarded contracts for the reconstruction of economically important roads in the local government areas (LGAs)

“We are working very hard to reconstruct several other roads in about nine LGAs through a special multilateral funding arrangement that gives the state a pathway to fix roads to boost agriculture productivity and produce marketing,” he added.

Also, the President of Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Chief Jerry Kalu, commended the government for its efforts towards rebuilding Abia.

Kalu said that the rebuilding agenda of the present administration would go a long in boosting socioeconomic growth in the state.

Shen said that the had been constructed with the highest engineering design and specifications to stand the test of time.

He described the road as vital tool for boosting socioeconomic development and added that the road would greatly improve the living standard of the residents.

Abia state Governor, Dr Alex Otti has announced that the state government has reached an agreement with the Federal Government to jointly rehabilitate the federal roads in the state.

Governor Otti made the announcement, yesterday, at Government House Umuahia, during a Media Parley organized by the state government to provide Journalists an overview of the achievements of the current administration since it’s inception.

The Governor revealed that plans are underway to commence rehabilitation work on the Port Harcourt and Ohanku Roads in Aba.

He emphasized that the state government is in partnership with the Federal Government to reconstruct the Umuahia – Bende – Ohafia Roads, along with other federal roads in the state.

The Governor also said that the state government had already commenced palliative work on federal roads such as the Umuahia -Ikot Ekpene Road and other similar federal roads in the state to alleviate the difficulties experienced by road users.

“We are working closely with the Federal Government to ensure that these roads are maintained and rebuilt so that the bad name that we get from those roads will be a thing of the past”, he said.

The Governor noted that the decision to embark on the Ossah-Mission Hill Road expansion project was informed by the desire to
stimulate economic development within the state.

He added that 130 buildings had been marked for demolition and the payment of compensation to affected individuals by the ongoing exercise was in progress, with a total of N771 million already disbursed.

“The last time I checked the total amount of money for compensation was about N771 million and that has already been paid.

“Some people have not received theirs because of the discrepancies in the account details they provided.

“Some others have not received because of family contention about whose account would be used to receive them the money”, he said.

On the Abia Innovation Industrial Park, Governor Otti said that the government would harness the oil and gas reserves in Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area to change the fortunes of the people of Owaza and the state at large.

The Governor assured landowners of monetary compensation and the opportunity for employment for themselves and their dependents within the park, stressing the state government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing local content.

He acknowledged that the host community had been previously neglected by past administrations and expressed empathy for the challenging conditions they have faced despite their role in the state’s oil production.

“If you were present there at the groundbreaking ceremony, you will sympathize with the people that live there, because it is very sad that the place where oil also comes out from in the state is in that condition.

“A community that makes us to be addressed as oil-producing state, it is not fair to leave them in the state they are and that is why they trouped out in their numbers to receive us”, Otti said.

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has reiterated his administration’s desire to partner with the private sector in the quest to rebuild the state.

Governor Otti restated government’s position to work with the private sector while receiving the Group Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Mrs. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, who led a team of the bank’s senior management team on a business visit to the Governor on Tuesday.

He welcomed the bank’s request to partner with the state government in delivering gains of democracy to the people while enumerating some of the things his administration had done in the area of road and health infrastructure as well as ensuring that workers receive their salaries promptly since it assumed office less than four months ago.

Mrs. Onyeali-Ikpe thanked the Governor for the warm reception accorded her and her team, which included Mrs. Pamela Shodipo, Executive Director South; Mr. Mike Nnaji, Regional Head Abia Fidelity; and Mrs. Evi Kanu Regional Head, Rivers-Bayelsa.

She said that the Fidelity team was in Abia to, first, congratulate Governor Otti on his electoral victory and subsequent assumption of office, adding that she had heard some of the good news coming out of Abia since Dr. Otti began to steer the ship of state.

Onyeali-Ikpe, however, said the work of rebuilding Abia required a concerted effort and all hands on deck to deliver and that Fidelity was willing to be part of the Abia success story under Governor Otti.

“We realize that there is need for support in the area of infrastructural development and industrialization of the state. That’s why we came, to see how we can partner with him with a view to moving Abia State forward.

“For the level of infrastructural development Abia needs, there is need for heavy lifting. As you well know, there’s a lot of work to be done in the area of roads, schools, hospitals; and you can’t do all of that from what the state generates on its own. You definitely need heavy lifting support from the banks,” Mrs. Onyeali-Ikpe stated.
