Covid-19 Vaccination: Abia Records Huge Turn Out

Despite speculations and propaganda in some quarters over the efficacy of the Oxford Astrazeneca Covid-19 Vaccine, Abians have trouped out in their numbers to get vaccinated against the killer disease.

The move is following the roll out of the covid-19 vaccination in Abia State which saw the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu taking his first dose of the vaccine yesterday.

Some stakeholders, religious leaders and traditional rulers in the State have also joined in receiving the vaccine.

Among those who came out to be vaccinated include Former Ambassador of Nigeria to Argentina, Chief Empire Kanu and the Pioneer Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)in the State, Chief Tony Ukasoanya.

The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Apostle Emmanuel Agomuo and Bishop Sunday Onuoha, as well as some first class traditional rulers in the state were not left out.

Those who spoke to National Ambassador urged Abia people to discountenance the propaganda against the efficacy of the vaccine, saying that such rumours are unfounded.

Speaking after being inoculated at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Former Ambassador of Nigeria to Argentina, Chief Empire Kanu and the Pioneer PDP Chairman in the State, Chief Tony Ukasoanya expressed confidence that the vaccine would provide the needed immunity and enjoined Abia people and residents to leverage the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Also, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Apostle Emmanuel Agomuo and Bishop Sunday Onuoha encouraged Christians in the State to avail themselves the opportunity to be vaccinated.

They called on church leaders in the State to encourage their members to take the vaccine, explaining that the vaccine is neither dangerous nor deadly.

While praying that the pandemic would soon be eliminated, the clergy men said that vaccination increases the immune system and helps protect people from infections.

They recommended that everyone should get vaccinated, adding that it is the only way to and safeguard one’s self from the pandemic.

In their various speeches, the third Deputy Chairman, Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Godfrey Onwuka and the Chairman, Ikwuano Council of Traditional Rulers Eze Dr. Eugene Ndimele encouraged their fellow traditional rulers and their subjects to get vaccinated.

The Traditional Rulers thanked the state government for making the vaccination available for all at no cost as well as the awareness created on the need for the people to get vaccinated.

In his contribution, the Executive Secretary, Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Chinagozie Adindu while assuring the the vaccine is safe and potent, enjoined people to feel free to get inoculated.

Abia Govt Recieves AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine *Gov Ikpeazu Takes First Shot

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Thursday, formally received the official consignment of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine from the federal government.

Governor Ikpeazu who equally received his first dose of the vaccine at the Government House Umuahia, appealed to Abians to make themselves available for vaccination.

Governor Ikpeazu stated that the deployment of the vaccine is a global decision endorsed by the World Health Organization and captured by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which is the lead agency in Nigeria that is battling covid-19 with the aimed of eradicating the disease in Nigeria.

“All of us must key into this global agenda to stamp out COVID-19 in all communities in Abia and Nigeria at large.

“It is my prayer that this vaccine will aid us in our battle against COVID-19, so that very soon everything will return to normal and we will bid issues of COVID-19 farewell forever,” he added.

In an interview with newsmen, the Executive Secretary of Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agenda (ASPHDA), Dr Chinagozi Adindu described the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine as efficacious.

Adindu said that the initial administration of the vaccine would be done on frontline workers, healthcare workers in private and government establishments, law enforcement agents, Abia COVID-19 taskforce team and the elderly.

He said that the agency was adequately prepared to conduct full administration of the vaccine for persons within the targeted group during the vaccination exercise.

Adindu said that the first batch of the vaccine received by the state would be adequate for the vaccination of the targeted group of persons.

He added that in no distant time the state would take delivery of the second batch, and the second batch of the vaccine would be administered on the vulnerable, especially people with underlying ailments.

“The arrangement is that after receiving the first shot, the person will come again for the second shot which will take place two months from today.

“It is important to receive the second shot within 8-12 weeks, after the first shot as this will be the complete dose which means the person is protected from COVID-19.

“Our target is that before the end of the year we would have vaccinated 40 per cent of Abia population”,Dr Adindu concluded.
