The State Finals of the Abia Soccer Fest have commenced, with matches taking place across three centres in Abia State, marking the second phase of the tournament aimed at discovering grassroots football talent.

Performing the ceremonial kick-off, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, urged participating teams to uphold discipline and strive for victory.

The Commissioner reiterated that the Abia Soccer Fest was conceived to identify and nurture football talents at the grassroots level, adding that the initiative had already yielded promising results.

According to Prince Nwachukwu , 57 standout players were identified during the local government stage of the competition.

“The essence of this entire competition is, first and foremost, to draw out talent from the various communities.

“And I am happy to say that some of the players I am seeing here, some of them are 17, 18, so we are happy that they are coming out.

“We will pick up all these players and then have them compete amongst themselves so that they can have opportunities in bigger clubs and showcase their talents.

“So apart from drawing out the talent, we also want to use it as a bonding strategy for communities to interact through the medium of sports”, he added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, disclosed that the competition had so far produced over fifty talented players and revealed plans to invite international scouts for possible selection.

Sir Ananaba advised participants to adhere strictly to the rules and remain focused, expressing optimism that exceptional performers would be discovered and nurtured further and commended Governor Alex Otti for his continued commitment to sports development in the state.

Providing further insight into the tournament, the Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Captain Eric Asomugha, explained that the State Finals represent the second phase of the competition, involving champions from the 17 local government areas, grouped into four pools.

He noted that the tournament has provided a valuable platform for youth engagement and talent exposure.

“The whole idea of Abia Soccer Fest is for community engagement, youth empowerment, and talent hunt.

“We want to give opportunity to our great footballers who are in the grassroots, so, we’ve gone deep into the villages. And mind you, this competition is being played by 184 wards in the state from the 17 Local Government Areas.

“So, we have two phases. Phase 1, we played 166 matches across the 17 Local Government Areas. And today, we are kicking off the second phase, which we call the State Finals; where the 17 Local Government champions will be competing against each other for the state champion”, Captain Asomugha explained.

In her remarks, the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, lauded Governor Otti for his support for youth development and urged all teams to play in accordance with the rules.

At the end of the opening match, Isuikwuato secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Umunneochi, setting the tone for a competitive and talent-rich tournament.

The event also witnessed the endorsement of Governor Otti as sole candidate for future political aspirations by stakeholders in Ukwa East, led by former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Welcoming the new members on behalf of the party’s National Working Committee, the Governor assured them of equal opportunities, pointing out that the Labour Party was big enough to accommodate everyone committed to the progress of Abia.

He expressed his administration’s readiness to expedite action in facilitating the completion of key projects aimed at boosting economic activities and accelerating development in the oil-producing area.

On power supply, Otti assured residents that electricity would be restored to Ukwa East before the end of March.

He directed the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities to immediately address outstanding technical issues, noting that the area might only require transformers and smart meters to reconnect to the grid.

In the Healthcare Sector, the Governor announced that 11 primary healthcare centres in Ukwa East had undergone renovation and upgrading while four are currently operational with five are expected to become functional within 30 days, and the remaining two within 45 days.

He also spoke on the ongoing Obohia–Ndoki Road project, explaining that it involves the construction of drainage tunnels to channel floodwaters into the Aba River.

Despite the financial implications, Governor Otti assured residents that the projects would be completed in line with their requests, stressing that road connectivity remained central to his administration’s economic blueprint.

He noted that both administrations had agreed to continuous engagement, adding that their deputies had already met to ease tensions and stabilise the area.

In the Agricultural Sector, Governor Otti announced that the Abia State Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an international firm specialising in palm production and processing to revitalise the Abia Palm plantation.

He said the company would soon commence operations, a move expected to boost employment and agro-industrial activities.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, the lawmaker representing Ukwa East State Constituency, Hon. Lewis Obianyi, said the number of defectors exceeded 1,000, noting that the 91 earlier announced were leaders with large followings.

Hon Obianyi said the decision to join the Labour Party was informed by the level of development witnessed in Abia State under Otti’s leadership.

He described Governor Otti as performance-driven, noting that his achievements has positioned the State as a reference point nationally.

In his speech, the Chairman of the occasion and former Senate President, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, lauded Governor Otti for what he described as purposeful leadership anchored on infrastructure renewal and people-oriented policies.

Senator Adolphus Wabara commended the Governor’s “bold, compassionate and people-centred leadership,” stating that the foundation laying ceremony for the Ukwa East General Hospital affirms the State Government’s commitment to governance anchored on human dignity and social equity.

Sen Wabara disclosed that the people of the area had for decades, yearned for improved access to quality healthcare while families endured avoidable pain and losses due to long distances to medical facilities.

” Today, that narrative is changing”,” Wabara said.

He however, urged the State Government to accelerate work on the Aba-Ohanku Road and Aba-Obuohia projects, as well as to expedite repairs on the Ohambele-Obeaku Road leading to the proposed Abia Seaport, noting that timely completion would stimulate commerce, reduce travel time and attract investment.

The Chairman of Ukwa East LGA, Mr Chibunna Akara, in his remarks, listed ongoing projects in the area to include the General Hospital, a Magistrate Court nearing completion, two Smart Schools, 11 retrofitted Primary Healthcare Centres, Digital skills training for 80 youths, Educational Support for 300 students, construction of access roads, installation of 10 solar-powered boreholes across political wards and the development of four evening markets.

Other dignitaries at the event, including former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Chinedu Brown, former lawmaker Chief Uzoma Abonta and former Nigeria’s Consul-General to South Africa, Chief Okey Emuchay, expressed support for the Otti led-administration, describing the Governor’s interventions as transformative and inclusive.

Earlier, the Traditional Ruler of Obeaku Autonomous Community in Ukwa East, Eze Ikeagwuchi Ekeke, appealed to Governor Otti to urgently address the persistent power outage in the area, noting that the perennial electricity disruption had crippled businesses, healthcare services and slowed development in Ukwa East, urging the State Government to restore stable supply.

He also alleged land encroachment by neighbouring communities in Akwa Ibom State and urged the Governor to safeguard Ukwa East’s territorial integrity and ensure lasting peace.

The Abia State Sports Council is set to engage in numerous sporting activities in 2026 and is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to record strong performances across all competitions.
This cheering news was disclosed by the Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, during a media chat in his office.

Top on the Council’s calendar is the hosting of the maiden Abia State South-East Shooting Seminar and Championship, scheduled to take place at the Umuahia Township Stadium. The seminar will hold from January 25 to 27, while the championship proper is slated for January 28 to 30, 2026.
The competition will feature Under-15 male and female categories, as well as senior male and female events.

Hosting the championship will enable Abia State to raise a formidable shooting team that will represent the state at zonal and national competitions, thereby increasing its chances of winning more medals, as shooting is a multi-medal sport.

Furthermore, the Sports Council is working round the clock to ensure Team Abia is adequately prepared for the forthcoming Niger Delta Games, scheduled to hold in Edo State.

In March, the 3rd National Para Games will take place in Abuja, and the Director of Sports assured that Team Abia will not only participate but will also put up a strong challenge for laurels.
The Council is equally gearing up for impressive outings at the National Youth Games and the National Sports Festival.

The newly introduced National Intermediary Games has also been factored into the Council’s plans. The competition is aimed at bridging the gap between the National Youth Games and the National Sports Festival by engaging and nurturing young athletes into well-prepared senior competitors capable of performing favourably at elite levels. Team Abia is expected to participate in the competition later in the year.

Beyond competition, Abia State continues to play an active role in sports administration at the national level, with Abians elected into the boards of six sports associations, including Shooting, Athletics, Kung Fu, Boxing, Scrabble and Rugby.

Comrade Obioma George attributed these achievements to the immeasurable support of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba. He assured that Abia State will continue to be counted among the top sporting states in Nigeria.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Wednesday presented the trophy of the 2025 Pastor Laz and Rose Otti Memorial Football Tournament to Umuehim Football Club, winners of the competition, as the people of Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area, marked the Ehi La Uguru Day Celebration 2025.

The event, held at the Umuehim Primary School football field, was themed “Celebrating Our Heritage, Unity and Progress” and attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders and sports enthusiasts from across the State.

While handing over the trophy, Governor Otti congratulated all the teams that participated in the tournament, describing sports as a vital tool for fostering unity, youth development and communal harmony.

Flanked by Dr Alex Alozie and former Super Eagles star, Kenneth Omeruo, the Governor directed that both the winners and runners-up should immediately receive the cash prizes attached to the competition.

He also challenged Umuehim FC to defend the title next year.

Governor Otti further assured that every participating team would be appreciated as a means of encouraging grassroots sports development, and commended the organisers for honouring the memories of distinguished sons and daughters of Nvosi.

He said the gesture aligned with his administration’s commitment to celebrating Abians who had made sacrifices for the progress of the State.

“We will keep recognising people who have struggled and suffered for this State”, the Governor declared.

Governor Otti also announced that the State Government would, on January 1, 2026, celebrate the late nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Jaja Wachuku, as part of efforts to preserve Abia’s historical legacy.

The Governor announced that the fencing of Umuehim Primary School, the venue of the celebration, would be completed before the end of January 2026.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Ehi La Uguru Day Celebration, Pastor Odoemelam Nwaru, said Governor Otti had no serious challenger ahead of the 2027 governorship election, noting that the Governor’s performance had earned him widespread acceptance.

He said that “this is the time God wants Dr Otti to lead and save Abia State”, and assured that the people of the area were solidly behind the Governor.

Speaking on behalf of the Planning Committee, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr Obioma Nwaogbe, thanked Governor Otti for what he described as transformational projects across Abia State, which he said had brought pride to the people of Nvosi.

Dr Nwaogbe noted that the Governor had fulfilled his promise to fix the Ehi La Uguru–Umunkpeyi Road, including the installation of streetlights, and expressed appreciation for the ongoing reconstruction of the Umunkpeyi–Amaiyi Road.

He also commended the introduction of electric buses now operating on various routes across the State.

Also speaking, elder statesman Dr Gershon Amuta reaffirmed the support of Ehi La Uguru, Isialangwa South and the entire Ngwa nation for Governor Otti’s administration, praying for divine guidance and assuring him of victory in 2027.

Highlights of the event included special prayers offered by Ndi Eze Ngwa, led by the First Deputy Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Nelson Nmerengwa, as well as the presentation of 26 books authored by a 14-year-old prodigy, Uchegbue Joseph Chimgozirim, to the Governor.

The annual football competition, which will run until 31 December 2025, drew a large crowd of football lovers from within and outside the community. The opening ceremony was lively and colourful, marked by cultural displays, high spirits from supporters, and visible enthusiasm from players, coaches, and match officials.

Community elders, youths, coaches, players, and fans were all present, underscoring the unifying essence of the Unity Cup.

Speaking at the event, His Royal Highness Eze Engr. John Amaghereonu described the tournament as a worthy tribute to the late Chief Godwin N. Emelandu, whom he said was widely known for his passion for education, youth empowerment, and community development through sports. He recalled that both the sponsor and his late father attended Umuagu Central School, Ohuhu, where their love for football was nurtured and actively expressed on the field.

Also speaking, High Chief Oliver Anukwe, Umuule autonomous Community, Umuahia North LGA, a respected leader in Umuagu, explained that the tournament was deliberately organised by Chief Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu, was to preserve and sustain his father’s legacy.

According to him, the sponsor has consistently used football as a means of bringing people together, nurturing local talents, and inspiring the younger generation to embrace discipline, teamwork, and excellence.

Delivering the opening speech on behalf of the sponsor, High Chief Anukwe warmly welcomed elders, players, coaches, match officials, and guests to the Emelandu Unity Cup 2025. He described the late Chief Godwin N. Emelandu as a man who saw football not merely as a game, but as a platform for teaching values such as fair play, perseverance, respect, and unity. He noted that true success, according to the late Chief, lies not only in winning matches but in the lessons learned and friendships formed along the way.

The football action lived up to expectations as Team Umukaonu edged Team Nbaguro 1–0 in the opening match, setting an exciting tone for the rest of the tournament. Several matches are scheduled in the coming days, with organisers hopeful that the competition will help discover and nurture young football talents within the community.

Beyond the football pitch, the Unity Cup also reflected a deeper spirit of compassion and giving back. In a related gesture, Chief Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu distributed Christmas rice and other essential food items to Aguebi women in Umuagu village. The women expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the gesture as timely and uplifting, especially during the festive season.

This humanitarian act further demonstrated the sponsor’s commitment not only to sports and youth development but also to supporting the less privileged and strengthening communal bonds.

More than just a football tournament, the Umuagu Unity Cup 2025 stands as a celebration of remembrance, service, and community spirit. As the competition progresses, it is expected to foster unity, inspire hope among young people, and keep alive the enduring legacy of Chief Godwin N. Emelandu; a legacy rooted in leadership, kindness, and the unifying power of sports.

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to Sports development and Youth Empowerment, pledging to harness Sports as a strategic platform for talent discovery, job creation and economic opportunity.

The Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir. Nwaobilor Ananaba stated this at the Aba Sports Club during Edition of the Rising Lion in Elephant Shadow Boxing Championship tagged ‘Enyimba 2025.

Sir Ananaba noted that the Governor Otti administration is deliberate in its efforts to reposition Sports in the state, noting that Abia is no longer where it used to be in the sector.

According to him, the professional boxing championship, which featured featherweight and lightweight bouts, aligns with the administration’s Sports development policy aimed at identifying and nurturing raw talents across the State.

Sir Ananaba expressed appreciation to Governor Otti for his consistent support for Youth development through Sports and commended the organisers of the event.

“We are organising events like this to ensure we identify talents, have a structure to nurture them, and make them the best athletes they can be.

“I’m grateful to His Excellency for giving us all the support. He just procured this boxing ring to encourage us to continue to discover talents. Today shows that His Excellency is supporting us in every way, whether sports or youth development”, he said.

The Commissioner urged young athletes to emulate the late Obisia Nwankpa, the celebrated Nigerian boxer, who brought honour to Abia State and Nigeria through his exploits in the ring.

In his remarks, the President-General of the Nigerian Supporters Club, Dr Rafiu Oladipo, applauded Governor Otti’s efforts in Sports development and called on Government’s at all levels to accord boxing the same attention given to football.

Dr Oladipo recalled that boxing was the first sport to project Nigeria positively on the global stage and paid tribute to former Nigerian boxers who enhanced the country’s image through their achievements.

“So if sports is the only thing that propagates our image positively outside, then it means we do need to give it all the support that it deserves”, Dr Oladipo said.

He also encouraged Youths to take their sporting careers seriously, noting that championships such as Enyimba 2025 provide a viable pathway for personal development and economic success.

“Sports today is about the biggest business for any individual, be it football or boxing”, he added.

Also speaking, the Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, described the championship as the first professional boxing event of its kind to be staged in the State.

He said the event coincided with two Abia-born boxers successfully defending their South-East titles and thankedGod for their victories, describing the outcome as a boost for boxing in the State.

Comrade George further acknowledged the donation of boxing equipment to Abia State by the two boxers, expressing optimism that the gesture would help the State achieve greater heights in boxing.

The event also featured the formal handover of a boxing ring procured on behalf of the state Government by an ex-boxer of Abia origin, Mr Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, who thanked Governor Otti for approving the proposal for the equipment and the championship without hesitation.

At the end of the championship, Zoe Chibuike Okoronkwo defended his featherweight title after defeating Nwambeke Ndubuisi by technical knockout. Israel Obinna Ogbodo defeated Udeh Chibuike, while Chinaza Ikechukwu Okoronkwo retained his lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Ede Emmanuel Peter.

Abia State Government has inaugurated the first-ever University and Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, with Governor Alex Otti declaring the event open at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu recently, Governor Otti described the Fiesta as a historic milestone in the state’s drive to promote youth empowerment, sports development, and academic excellence. He noted that the event marks a new chapter for tertiary institutions across Abia.

The Governor recalled the symbolic sports torch, ignited weeks earlier in Isiala Ngwa South, which travelled through 20 public and private institutions before arriving at the stadium. He said its journey carried a strong message of hope, unity, and renewed purpose for young people.

Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing talent and expanding opportunities beyond academics.
“Education is incomplete without platforms that build teamwork, discipline, creativity, and physical fitness,” he said. “Sports remain one of the strongest tools for shaping future champions and uniting communities.”

He emphasized that the government’s investment in logistics, accommodation, and participation grants demonstrated that “every youth matters and every talent counts.” He encouraged athletes to uphold integrity, fairness, and sportsmanship as they compete in 23 sporting events.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, said the Fiesta is anchored on the theme “Compete, Unite, Conquer” which reflects the spirit of a new Abia where young people support one another and pursue excellence. She stressed that sports are vital for building resilience, discipline, teamwork, and character.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing youth potential. He noted that the Governor’s Secondary School Unity Games laid the foundation for grassroots talent discovery, while the new Fiesta extends that vision to tertiary institutions.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr. Emeka Enyiazu, described the event as a movement promoting unity and development across public and private institutions. He said sports, like education, are a universal language that strengthens leadership, teamwork, and excellence.

In a vote of thanks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Barr. Chinyere Okeziem Nwoko, expressed appreciation to partners and participants. She said the Fiesta represents a strategic investment in the physical, mental, and social well-being of students, affirming Abia’s commitment to holistic education.

The inaugural edition of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta has been declared open by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, with a promise that his administration will continue to invest in youth development.

The Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to youth development, talent discovery, and inclusion.

“From this field,” the Deputy Governor said, “will emerge national heroes, continental champions, and Olympians.”

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme-Uche, stated that the fiesta is anchored on the powerful theme, “Compete, Unite, Conquer,” which captures the spirit of what the New Abia stands for.

“This fiesta,” the Commissioner stated, “is the first of its kind, bringing together students from every corner of our state’s tertiary education ecosystem — our universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and specialized institutes. It reflects our belief that education must go beyond the classroom, nurturing the body as much as the mind.”

Prof. Eme-Uche appreciated the Governor for his “unwavering support for education and youth development, which has made this initiative possible. This fiesta stands today as yet another testament to your youth-focused governance.”

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, noted that one of the Abia State Government’s most critical mandates is to identify, nurture, and celebrate the talents of the youth.

“We began this journey with renewed energy,” he said, “through the statewide sports festival tagged The Abia State Governor’s Secondary School Unity Games, deliberately building a pipeline of talent discovery from the grassroots to our schools. Today’s event is a continuation of that vision, engaging our tertiary institutions as a vital part of our sports development ecosystem.”

Chelsea climbed to second place on the Premier League table after securing a comfortable 2–0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor. Pedro Neto opened the scoring in the first half, before Enzo Fernández sealed the points with a late strike two minutes from full time.

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth and West Ham United played out a thrilling 2–2 draw. The Hammers raced into a two-goal lead thanks to a first-half brace from Callum Wilson, but the Cherries rallied in the second half. Marcus Tavernier converted a 69th-minute penalty, and Enes Unal struck in the 81st minute to ensure the hosts claimed a share of the spoils.

Brighton & Hove Albion mounted a comeback of their own at the Amex Stadium, defeating Brentford 2–1. Igor Thiago fired the visitors ahead from the penalty spot, but goals from Danny Welbeck and Jack Hinshelwood turned the game around for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

Fulham left it late at Craven Cottage, needing an 84th-minute goal from Raúl Jiménez to edge past Sunderland 1–0.

Liverpool’s struggles deepened at Anfield as they suffered a shocking 0–3 defeat to Nottingham Forest. Murillo opened the scoring, with Nicolas Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White adding second-half goals to complete a humiliating result for the Reds.

Wolves’ winless run continued after Crystal Palace claimed a 2–0 win, courtesy of second-half goals from Daniel Muñoz and Yeremy Pino.

Newcastle United stunned Manchester City with a 2–1 win at St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes was the hero, scoring twice in the second half. Ruben Dias had briefly leveled the match in the 68th minute, but Barnes restored Newcastle’s lead just two minutes later.

Meanwhile, league leaders Arsenal have the opportunity to go six points clear when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on Sunday. Elsewhere, Leeds United will host Aston Villa, while Monday Night Football features Manchester United take on Everton at Old Trafford.

The post Premier League Review: Chelsea Win as Liverpool, Man City Stumble first appeared on National Ambassador News.

A total of 1,000 students from Public and Private Tertiary institutions in Abia State are expected to participate in 26 Sporting events at the Maiden Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta organized by the Ministry of Tertiary Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.

The four day event, which would commence from 25 to 28 November 2025, will also feature the unveiling of the “New Abia Pioneers Club; a
value-orientation platform to promote excellence, discipline and alternatives to cultism and drug abuse.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof Uche Eme Uche, who disclosed this while briefing Journalists at a joint press conference in Umuahia, described the initiative as a landmark intervention by the present administration, aimed at revitalising extracurricular life in higher institutions.

Prof Uche said the the Sports festival is also designed to unite students from various Tertiary Institutions, groom new talents and entrench the New Abia mindset across campuses.

“We call it a Sports fiesta because it’s not going to be the traditional games competitions. This is going to be like a festival, a festival activity to celebrate sports and sports people and also trying to identify talents”, the Commissioner stated.

She noted that students from the Tertiary Institutions in the State often rely on NUGA Games, which are infrequent and usually held far from the state, leaving them with limited sporting engagement.

“We have secondary school sports, we have children’s sports, and what is happening at the tertiary level?”, she queried.

Prof. Uche thanked Governor Alex Otti for the swift approval of the Sports festival which she said underscores his administration’s passion for youth development and holistic education.

“This programme aims at an inclusive approach towards education. Inclusive because the barriers between maybe teacher, student, male, female will be erased on the ground of play”, she added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, disclosed that the fiesta will hold across three key venues in Umuahia.

According to him, Track and field events will take place at the Umuahia Township Stadium, football matches will be hosted at Ibeku High School, while lawn tennis games hold at the Ridge Club, Umuahia.

Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, described the initiative as a strategic continuation of the State’s Youth-development programmes.

He recalled that the present administration launched the Secondary School Unity Games, with the introduction of the Tertiary Education Fiesta to complete the Youth talent-development pipeline from Secondary to Tertiary levels.

“A couple of years ago, we started the secondary school unity game, where we catch them young, provide a good structure to develop them and nurture them, and make them fantastic athletes to represent at the state at the state level, national level and international level.

“So, His Excellency has gone further for us to extend this youth empowerment to tertiary education. For us, not only to identify, nurture but also to further extend to identify stars that will replace our existing stars.

“Part of our mandate is to create structures to develop young people so, the tertiary education Fiesta in collaboration with the Ministry of the Tertiary is a fantastic way to leverage on what we have started”, he said.

Ananaba confirmed that the fiesta will feature 26 sports, making it one of the most extensive multi-sport events in the region.

“We also want to make sure that other sports, who are not popular, become popular. It’s a wider way to engage our athletes and promote sports. Sports is also business.

Sir Ananaba disclosed that the Ministry has submitted recommendations for additional infrastructure, including an Olympic-size swimming facility to enhance aquatic sports development.

He revealed that Governor Otti approved a total of ₦500,000 for each participating tertiary institution, covering athlete preparation, transportation and other logistics to guarantee their full participation.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the CAF World Cup Qualifying playoff in Morocco on Sunday.

Chancel Mbemba scored the decisive goal for DR Congo in their clash with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, ending the five-time African champions’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Cameroon, the first African side to reach a World Cup quarterfinal back in 1990 in Italy, also hold the record for the most African appearances at the tournament, with eight overall. However, they will miss out on next year’s expanded 48-team competition.

Both DR Congo and Cameroon created several chances during their encounter, but it was the Leopards’ captain who ultimately made the difference. DR Congo is aiming to return to the World Cup for the second time in its history, following its debut in 1974.

Nigeria, meanwhile, secured a commanding 4-1 victory over the Panthers of Gabon to book their place in the final.

The winner of Sunday’s playoff will advance to the intercontinental playoff in March next year, the winner will qualify for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have cruised into the final of the CAF World Cup Qualifying Playoff after securing an emphatic 4–1 victory over the Panthers of Gabon.

After a goalless first half in which Gabon’s goalkeeper, Loyce Mbaba, pulled off several outstanding saves, the breakthrough finally came for the Super Eagles. A defensive mix-up in the Gabonese backline allowed Akor Adams to intercept a back pass, dribble past Mbaba, and fire Nigeria ahead.

However, Mario Lemina restored parity for Gabon with a minute remaining, dragging the match into extra time.

Chidera Ejuke put Nigeria back in front in the 97th minute, before Victor Osimhen—who had earlier missed a few glorious chances—grabbed a late brace to seal the victory and put the game beyond their West African rivals.

Nigeria will now face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo in the playoff final on Sunday

“Today, we gather here to light a torch not merely of fire, but of hope, passion, and youthful energy,” Otti said.

The governor explained that the sports fiesta, scheduled to hold from November 25 to 29, 2025, would feature 23 sporting events with participation from 38 state-owned and private tertiary institutions across Abia.

“As the torch travels through all 38 institutions, it will carry with it the message of unity, discipline, and excellence that defines the Abian spirit,” he said.

“These games go beyond competition; they provide a platform for talent discovery, moral redirection, and positive engagement. Through sports, our young people will find purpose, strength, and teamwork the very qualities needed for a progressive society.”

Otti commended his Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Institutions, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, who chairs the fiesta’s organising committee in collaboration with the Abia State Sports Council, for his dedication and effective coordination.

He also announced a ₦500,000 grant for any institution presenting athletes in five or more sporting events, describing it as an incentive to encourage participation and excellence.

The governor urged students to imbibe the values of teamwork, discipline, and focus, noting that the games would nurture future champions who would make Abia proud.

“Let every flare remind our students that greatness begins with discipline, and that within each of them lies the fire to transform our state and nation,” Otti said.

“Sports is a contributor to the economy, and it is our goal to ensure that no sector will be left behind”, he said.

Ananaba who acknowledged that the absence of a standard Cricket Pitch had limited the sport’s growth in the State, assured that the issue was already receiving Government attention.

“Part of what you have noted is that we do not have the adequate pitch for you to play Cricket here. What we continue to do is to identify these problems and solve them”, he said.

According to him, the ongoing upgrade of the Umuahia Township Stadium is part of the present administration’s effort to create inclusive Sporting facilities for young talents.

“We are also planning to incorporate Cricket into our proposed Multi-use sports spaces, so that you can have the same experience you would have in South Africa or America”, he added.

In his remarks, the Zonal Representative of the South-East Cricket Association, Mr Chika Okoro, commended the Abia State Government for showing genuine commitment to Cricket development.

“We have had a series of obstacles along the way, but this is the first time we are having a government that is willing to partner with us, which is what we have always prayed for”, Okoro said.

He described the event as historic and expressed optimism that the Otti-led administration would significantly advance the Sport’s development.

“For me, this is a book-making ceremony, because big things start small. Gov. Alex Otti was brought into Abia State by God to wipe away the tears of many years and he is also going to wipe away the tears of Cricketers”, he said.

Okoro appealed for the construction of a standard Cricket Pitch, noting that cricket development required modest financial investment compared to other sports.

Veteran cricketer and former Nigerian National team player, Mr Chris Obasi, in an interview with Newsmen expressed delight over the revival of cricket in his State of Abia.

“I feel excited that my own state is giving this privilege to the younger ones. The Governor is a visionary and supportive leader, and I thank him for giving Ndi Abia the opportunity to be part of what is happening in the cricket world,” he said.

Obasi therefore urged young players to remain focused and view Cricket as a viable career path.

Several young players participating in the tournament including 11-year-old Moses Ajagbo from Ebonyi State, Goodluck Agbo from Enugu State and Chukwujekwu Nwachukwu from Anambra State, shared their enthusiasm and appreciation for the government’s renewed interest in cricket.

They urged their various state government to sustain their support for Cricket as well as sponsor them to play in other parts of the country.

The Championship’s opening day featured thrilling matches as young Cricketers displayed impressive skill and teamwork.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen became only the second Galatasaray player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League, as his heroics sank Ajax and handed the Dutch side their fourth consecutive European defeat at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

After a goalless first half, Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, heading home Leroy Sané’s precise cross. He then converted twice from the penalty spot to seal his hat-trick and propel himself to the top of this season’s Champions League scorers’ chart — one goal ahead of Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Erling Haaland (Manchester City), and Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid).

With the feat, Osimhen also becomes Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in European club football, surpassing former Inter Milan and Newcastle United forward Obafemi Martins, with a total of 25 goals on the continent.

Elsewhere, Derrick Luckassen scored the only goal as Cypriot champions Pafos stunned Villarreal, while Qarabag held Chelsea to a thrilling 2–2 draw.

In Portugal, Bayer Leverkusen edged Benfica 1–0, as Club Brugge battled Barcelona to an exciting 3–3 draw. At the San Siro, Inter Milan overcame Kairat 2–1, while Manchester City thrashed Borussia Dortmund 4–1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Newcastle United defeated Athletic Bilbao 2–0, and Atalanta secured a narrow 1–0 win over Marseille to round off an action-packed matchday.

Matchday Four of the UEFA Champions League kicked off yesterday with two headline fixtures in Paris and Liverpool. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain hosted German champions Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes, while Liverpool welcomed record Champions League winners Real Madrid to Anfield.

Former Liverpool winger Luiz Dias proved both hero and villain for Bayern, netting a brace before being sent off before halftime. PSG struggled to find a breakthrough until João Neves pulled one back with 16 minutes left, but the French champions failed to find an equalizer. Their night worsened when Hakim Ziyech sustained a serious injury, raising concerns for Morocco ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister’s 61st-minute header from a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick earned Liverpool a vital win over Real Madrid, spoiling Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to Merseyside.
Elsewhere, 10-man Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a 4-0 victory over Copenhagen, while Olympiakos and PSV Eindhoven shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Juventus dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Sporting, while Monaco claimed a valuable away win at Bodø/Glimt, with Folarin Balogun scoring his first Champions League goal. At the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 3-1, and Arsenal produced a dominant display to beat Slavia Prague 3-0 away from home.

In Italy, Napoli struggled in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, settling for a goalless draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Arsenal extended their strong run of form with a 2–0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. First-half goals from Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice sealed the victory for Mikel Arteta’s side, who move seven points clear of Bournemouth in the Premier League table.

At the City Ground, Manchester United were held to a 2–2 draw by Nottingham Forest, halting their push up the table. Casemiro gave United the lead in the first half, but Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White levelled shortly after the break. Nicolo Savona put the hosts ahead before Amad Diallo struck a powerful 81st-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Ruben Amorim’s team. The result denied United the chance to move into second place.

Elsewhere, Brighton earned a convincing 3–0 home win over Leeds United at the Amex Stadium, while Crystal Palace continued their strong form with a 2–0 victory against Brentford. Fulham also enjoyed a comfortable evening at Craven Cottage, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3–0.

Also speaking, the Director of Sports in Abia State, Mr Obioma George, described the competition as “competitive, tight, and tough,” and expressed optimism that the volleyball league would return to Umuahia next year.
