Wobodo disclosed that enforcement of the directive began this week, with security agencies arresting and prosecuting riders who failed to comply with earlier instructions to register with the local government.

Speaking in an interview with reporters, the council chairman said the action became necessary after several warnings and adequate time were given to operators to regularize their status. He noted that although the directive was issued in February, many riders ignored the call to register.

According to him, the profiling exercise is designed to create a comprehensive database of commercial motorcycle operators across Ikwerre, enabling authorities to easily identify riders, track movements when necessary, and respond effectively to crimes linked to the sector.

He warned that any operator found operating without proper registration, valid identification, or the approved reflective jacket would face arrest and prosecution.

Wobodo linked the enforcement to rising security concerns involving motorcycle riders, citing incidents in Iguruta community that prompted stricter regulations on Okada operations.

“We announced since February that all Okada riders in Ikwerre Local Government should come forward for proper documentation. They are required to provide their details and a referee who will stand for them. Unfortunately, many have refused to comply, which is why enforcement has now begun,” he said.

The chairman emphasized that the registration exercise remains completely free, dismissing fears that the process may involve hidden charges.

“This exercise is free of charge. The objective is to ensure security within Ikwerre. When crimes occur, authorities must be able to trace those responsible and take appropriate action. This is about protecting our people,” Wobodo added.

The registration and profiling exercise gained momentum in March following the council’s decision to ban motorcycle operations between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily.

The restriction came after the killing of Samuel Nchelem in February 2026, an incident allegedly involving a commercial motorcycle rider in Iguruta.

While acknowledging that the measures may pose temporary challenges for some operators, Wobodo appealed for cooperation, urging all affected riders to comply with the directive to avoid sanctions.

The council maintained that the enforcement drive is a critical step toward restoring public confidence, improving safety, and ensuring that only properly identified and accountable operators are allowed to operate within the commercial motorcycle sector in Ikwerre.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Friday said his administration is only at it’s initial stage in the drive to reposition Umuahia as the State Capital through sustained infrastructure development and economic expansion.

Governor Otti stated this at the Umuahia Township Stadium, during a Grand Civic Reception organised in his honour by the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia, comprising Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Ikwuano Local Government Areas.

The Governor highlighted planned development projects, including the construction of a five-star hotel and reiterated his commitment to completing key projects, including the Umuahia Stadium and the Amachara Specialist Hospital, assuring that his administration only initiates projects it is certain to complete.

He assured AbIa residents that ongoing reforms by his administration would permanently reposition the the state capital for sustainable growth adding that the state would not return to the past but continue on a path of transformation.

“The transformation of Umuahia a is at infant stages, it is just starting, we have clearly set out in our mind on what we want Umuahia to look like.

“We are not comparing ourselves with anybody. So when you say you want this place(Umuahia ) to look like Dubai, no, we don’t want to look like Dubai. We want it to look like Umuahia.

“There are still a whole lot of things to do. By the time we are done, I want to assure you that it will never be the same again.

“And you know, at a time when you hit the reset button and you institutionalize good governance and bring dignity back to the people, you don’t even need to talk. It is the people that will tell you that they will never go back to Egypt”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor, disclosed that his administration was finalising arrangements for the construction of a 200 to 250-room five-star hotel in the capital city, noting that the project would enhance tourism and business activities.

He further revealed that the site for the hotel project had already been identified and that a partner agreement would be signed shortly, with a formal groundbreaking expected in the coming weeks.

“I got the draft agreement which I shall sign this weekend to bring in a partner and sign an agreement with a five-star hotel, just like we are doing in Aba, with the Radisson Blu, We are going to do a 200 to 250 room five-star hotel in Umuahia.

“The site has already been identified behind me here. So at the appropriate time in a few weeks when we will do the groundbreaking, we will announce the name of the partner. It’s a name that you know and a name you’ll be very proud of”, he said.

Governor Otti reaffirmed commitment to institutionalising good governance and sustainable development adding that leadership must be rooted in stewardship and service to the people.

He described governance as a sacred responsibility, and pointed out that his administration remains guided by divine direction and public trust.

“We also want to thank God for giving us the privilege, because it’s a privilege to serve our people. I personally see leadership as service, leadership as stewardship.

“Anytime you take away stewardship from leadership, it becomes self-serving. So sometimes you hear politicians tell you that politics is a game of interest. The truth is that the interest they mean is self-interest.

“If it were not self-interest, then politics would be about stewardship. And for us, this is about stewardship”, he said.

Speaking on behalf of members of the Abia State House of Assembly from Ikwuano/Umuahia extraction, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Augustine Okezie, expressed appreciation for the Governor’s developmental strides across the federal constituency, noting that Governor Otti has demonstrated that there is hope in governance.

Also the Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr Chinedum Enwereuzo, who spoke on behalf of his counterparts in Ikwuano and Umuahia North LGAs, said the constituency had never experienced such unprecedented development.

He assured the Governor of the continued support of the people, adding that they were eagerly awaiting the next general election to “repay his good works.”

In their goodwill messages, stakeholders including Chief Uzodinma Okpara, Mr Monday Ubani, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the Federal Commissioner representing Abia at the Federal Character Commission, Chief Victor Ikeji, praised the administration’s performance.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has urged members of the Abia State Shippers Association to promptly report cases of harassment, illegal sealing of warehouses and extortion to relevant government agencies, as part of efforts to end criminality and strengthen law and order in the state.

Governor Otti stated this on Thursday while receiving members of the Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Olo Onuma, at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor who was reacting to complaints by the Association, reiterated his administration’s resolve to eliminate extortion and other forms of lawlessness

He noted that the State Government would not tolerate acts capable of undermining economic activities and public confidence.

Governor Otti expressed concern over the alleged extortion by hoodlums and individuals posing as security operatives, describing it as the first formal report of such incidents brought before him adding that it would be thoroughly investigated, with all those involved arrested and made to face the provisions of the law.

“There is a government here, any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately.

“One of the major things we have achieved here is to restore law and order, whoever you are, you must respect the law. We do not tolerate extortion, self-help or lawlessness in any form.

“This matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law”, he said.

Governor Otti directed his Chief of Staff to ensure that the allegations were thoroughly investigated and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence.

He maintained that the majority of Abia residents appreciates the State Government’s efforts in promoting the rule of law, respect for human rights and equal opportunities, assuring that his administration would continue to act in the best interest of the people.

On the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project, the Governor said that the project remains a strategic initiative but must be economically viable to attract patronage.

According to him, the absence of affordable and efficient transport infrastructure, particularly rail connectivity, poses a challenge to the project’s success.

“You can build it,(Dry Port ) but if it does not make economic sense to the businessmen who will use it, nobody will patronise it.

“Until we deal with rail transport and access logistics, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results”, he said. 

Governor Otti noted that traders and importers would naturally gravitate towards routes and facilities that minimise cost and delivery time.

Earlier, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abia State Shippers Association, Chief Olo Onuma, commended the Governor for what he described as remarkable achievements within a short period in office.

Chief Onuma, however, appealed for urgent government intervention in reviving the Abia Inland Dry Port project, stressing its potential to boost international trade and create employment opportunities.

“We urge your Excellency to bring your Midas touch to bear in this Abia State Inland Dry Port Project.

“The realisation of this dry port project will enormously enhance our international trade, increase employment within the state and of course leave further footprints of your in the sands of time here in Abia”, he said.

He decried the growing activities of hoodlums and alleged extortionists, claiming that members of the association, including artisans, fabric dealers, and shoe and bag makers, have suffered significant losses.

“Unfortunately, Your Excellency, a new gang of these extortionists have emerged and they are colluding with some government officials to cause havoc.

“They are extorting money from our members at our warehouse, offices and when we are offloading our cargoes.

“Specifically, these extortionists have engaged personnel from Standard Organisation Nigeria hiding behind the organisation to perpetrate their dubious activities.

“Furthermore, the extortionists also wait at the Army Brigade within the state, and arranges for soldiers to perpetrate the illegality”, he alleged.

Chief Onuma called on the State government to expedite action in tackling the menace, particularly in Aba, and urged greater awareness of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to enable local manufacturers tap into export opportunities.

He explained that the trade framework allows eligible Sub-Saharan African countries to export manufactured goods, especially garments, to the United States on favourable terms.

AbIa State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has assured the people that his administration would accelerate the pace of governance as it approaches its fourth year in office, noting that the government remains committed to delivering tangible results.

Governor Otti who stated this on Thursday when he attended the Chrism Mass of the CKC Aba, assured that the coming phase of his administration would witness intensified efforts across key sectors.

The Governor cited the ongoing CKC water scheme as a key project nearing completion and revealed that the project is about “80–90 per cent completed” and would soon begin supplying water to residents.

“We will even increase the tempo as we go into the fourth year. You ain’t seen nothing yet. We still have a lot to do.

“By next month, I’ll complete the CKC water project and water will start running. I want you to open your tap in your kitchen, and water will be running”, he said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic participation, urging citizens, particularly young people who have turned 18, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

Governor Otti who issued a stern warning against a planned protest in Aba, allegedly being orchestrated by a small group seeking to incite unrest in the state, urged residents to avoid participating in the protest.

According to the Governor, intelligence reports indicated that certain individuals had already prepared placards and were mobilising outsiders to stage a protest aimed at causing disaffection with the intent to provoke conflict that could lead to violence.

He stressed that although the government remains committed to lawful conduct, it would not hesitate to act decisively against threats to public peace.

“Let us warn everybody. If anyone tries that, he may end up somewhere he did not plan to”, he Otti cautioned.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement he received from the Catholic Bishop of AbA, His Lordship, Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, during the Chrism Mass, describing it as both unexpected and deeply significant.

The Governor also acknowledged the sustained support of the Church and praised the clergy for their spiritual leadership, particularly commending priests who renewed their vows during the ceremony.

He assured the congregation that his administration would continue to justify the confidence reposed in it.

Earlier, the Bishop of Aba Diocese, the Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, used the opportunity to endorse Governor Otti for the 2027 general elections, expressed confidence that his achievements would continue to speak for him.

Bishop Echema commended the Governor for what he described as three years of impactful and people-oriented leadership, noting that his administration has brought visible progress across the state.

The Bishop highlighted key achievements, particularly the transformation of Abia State University’s infrastructure, improved road networks, enhanced security, urban renewal in Aba, and the restoration of public confidence, noting that good governance is about service and care for the people.

He also appreciated the Governor’s accessibility, commitment to worship across denominations, and efforts to foster peace and development and urged the Governor to sustain the momentum, complete ongoing projects, and strengthen collaboration between the Church and the State for greater societal impact.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has directed all public officers in the state to comply fully with the Code of Conduct requirements, particularly asset declaration, warning that non-compliance would not be tolerated.

Governor Otti gave the directive on Tuesday, while receiving the South-East Zonal Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Mr Akinfolarin Feyishola, and his delegation during a courtesy visit in his office at Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA.

The Governor who stressed that compliance with the Code of Conduct is mandatory, further directed the Secretary to the State Government, Mr, Emmanuel Meribole to ensure strict compliance among all public office holders.

He described the Code of Conduct Bureau as “a necessary part of our system, the democratic system,” stressing that adherence to its provisions is “a minimum standard for people who want to play in the public sector space”.

“When I hear that some people have not visited the office, or have not complied, it’s strange, so, SSG, please, I’d like you to also lend your weight to this, to ensure that everyone who should comply complies”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor also commended the Bureau’s move towards digitalisation as a step in line with global best practices, noting that his administration is already leveraging technology in governance.

He assured the delegation of the state government’s support, including upgrading the Bureau’s office in Umuahia and addressing their logistic needs.

Earlier, the Zonal Director of the CCB, South-East, Mr Akinfolarin Feyishola expressed concern over low compliance levels among some political appointees and a significant number of career civil servants in the state, regarding asset declaration.

“We still have a few political office holders that are yet to declare their assets, and a large chunk of career officers that have not declared their assets,” he said.

He explained that the Bureau, which oversees Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, is responsible for investigations, prosecution, intelligence gathering and recovery of proceeds of crime beyond the capacity of state offices.

The Zonal Director proposed a comprehensive sensitisation programme for public officers in Abia to improve awareness and compliance with the Code of Conduct for public officers.

“We want to propose that Your Excellency approve for us to do a kind of enlightenment for all the public officers in the state on the Code of Conduct for public officers’ implications for non-compliance”, he said.

Mr Feyishola further revealed that the Bureau is transitioning to a fully digital asset declaration system and warned that failure to comply with asset declaration requirements could lead to prosecution.

The CCB Zonal Director added that public officers must download, complete and submit forms through the Bureau’s website as an interim measure.

He urged the State Government to enforce compliance by linking asset declaration to employment, promotion and remuneration processes and appealed for support in upgrading the Bureau’s office as well as the provision of an official vehicle.

Mr. Asagwara was arraigned before Magistrate Court 2 on charges bordering on obtaining money under false pretence and related offences.

According to the complainant, an Aba-based businessman, Mr. Chibuike Akusiobi; he handed over the sum of N84 million to the lawyer to facilitate the purchase of a property located along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, close to Ariaria International Market in Aba.

The businessman alleged that upon requesting a receipt or acknowledgement for the payment, the lawyer provided him with what later turned out to be a forged document presented as a Power of Attorney for the property.

He further claimed that he later discovered that only N15 million out of the N84 million he provided was allegedly paid to the land owner. The land owner was also said to have refunded the amount after the lawyer failed to pay the balance required to secure the property.

The complainant stated that efforts to recover the money proved unsuccessful, alleging that the lawyer subsequently fled his base in Aba.

Information gathered revealed that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force from Zone 9 Headquarters in Umuahia reportedly tracked and arrested the suspect last week at Omuma Road in Aba, Abia State.

When approached for comments by journalists regarding the allegations, the defendant declined to speak, stating, “No comment.”

Mr. Asagwara, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him in court.

Following his plea, the presiding magistrate ordered that he be remanded in custody, while the case was adjourned to April 8, 2026, for further hearing.

Abia State Government has commenced a pilot Digital Healthcare Programme in select hospitals as part of efforts to migrate from manual to technology-driven medical services across the State.

Governor Otti who disclosed this on Friday night during the February edition of his monthly media interaction with Journalists tagged, “Governor Otti Speaks“, said that the ongoing digital transition in the state is already delivering measurable and positive results.

“In terms of digital health care programmes, we have started a pilot programme in select hospitals. The whole idea is to migrate from manual to digital. It is looking quite good. Our people are happy”, the Governor said.

He recalled that upon assumption of office, his administration declared a state of emergency in critical sectors including Health, Environmental Sanitation and Infrastructure, noting that significant progress had been recorded in the sectors.

Governor Otti revealed that the phase one of the Project Ekwueme Primary Healthcare intervention programme is coming to a close with 200 Primary Health Care Centres retrofitted, rebuilt and remodelled across the State.

“All the 200 primary health care centres are now in place and are retrofitted, rebuilt or remodelled. Some of them have not been functionalised because we insist on minimum standards in terms of equipment and in terms of health care professionals.

“We have given the directive that in the next four to six weeks all of them should be functionalised”, he stated.

The Governor added that recruitment of Healthcare personnel is ongoing to ensure adequate staffing, while the State is also implementing the World Bank-supported IMPACT project.

According to him, 77 additional Primary Healthcare Centres have been rehabilitated under the World Bank scheme, bringing the total to over 270 healthcare facilities once fully operational.

Governor Otti disclosed that the State has engaged Quantus Medical Foundation, a United States-based firm, to train healthcare professionals in line with global best practices.

“We know a lot of them are highly qualified. But then, just like every other thing, the information age makes it compulsory that things continue to change. So we want our people to be updated”, he said.

The Governor revealed that the newly flagged-off General Hospital in Ukwa East Local Government Area; the first secondary healthcare facility in the council since its creation, will serve as a referral centre for Primary Healthcare facilities across the area and strengthen access to quality medical services for residents.

He noted that work is also ongoing in several Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, as well as specialist hospitals in Amachara and Umunnato.

On infrastructure, Governor Otti said his administration has intensified work across 31 road projects under the Ministry of Works, in addition to projects handled by the Greater Aba Development Agency and the Greater Ohafia Development Agency.

The Governor revealed that approval has been granted for the establishment of an SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba to support small businesses, particularly in the technology and phone repair value chain, adding that land has already been acquired for the project.

On workers’ welfare, Governor Otti said that payment of leave allowances had commenced and that his administration was addressing outstanding entitlements owed to former elected councillors between 1999 and 2022.

He also confirmed that the State Government has reacquired the moribund Afro Beverages Company from AMCON and is receiving expressions of interest from prospective investors with similar interest shown in the revival of Star Paper Mill.

“So the whole idea for government is to ensure that those companies go back to work and ensure that our people, who hitherto were employed in those places, even if it is not all of them, but others to get jobs in those places.

“It is not our preference to run those companies. We want to cede them to the private sector, not just somebody who has money, but we want to be sure that those companies do not run aground anymore”, he stated.

On the Nsulu Airport project, the Governor said compensation payments to affected landowners has resumed, with over 4,000 out of 10,000 claimants already paid.

“I understand there are close to 10,000 claimants, and at the moment over 4,000 have been paid. So we are taking them step by step. 

“We first of all took the people we acquired the proposed runway, which is what is going on now. The construction of the runway is going on very well. So we first of all settled them, and we are now taking them village by village. 

“In the spirit of transparency, we had made the Honorable Commissioner for Land to publish the names of claimants to the communities, so there’s nothing that is hidden. Of course, we are not ruling out sharp practices, but we are also very, very ready to deal with anyone that we see.

“I can assure you that everyone who should be compensated will be compensated. Work is going on uninterrupted at the Nsulu Airport project”, he affirmed.

Governor Otti further disclosed that reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, to be managed by Radisson Blu, had commenced, with a total of 250 rooms and an international convention centre planned upon completion.

In the Education sector, the Governor announced progress in the recruitment of 4,000 teachers, revealing that 36,000 applications were received, with 24,000 shortlisted for computer-based tests.

On power, he said efforts were underway to restore electricity to Ohafia and Ukwa East LGAs adding that the State is working towards acquiring a 60% majority stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to facilitate improved supply.

Addressing security concerns, the Governor maintained that no part of Abia State was under the control of non-state actors and assured residents of security of lives and properties.

“We will continue to do everything that we need to do to ensure that all of you can sleep with your two eyes closed, and I’m happy that results are positive. 

“There is no territory that is under the control of non-state actors in Abia State, and there will never be. We have put everything to security. We have professionals who are also supporting us.

“We set up the Security Trust Fund, we set up the Security Advisory Committee, and they are working very hard together with the security agencies, the police, the DSS, Nigerian Army, Navy.

“Everybody is working together to ensure that this place remains safe. And the logic is simple. If this place is not safe, everything we are doing will come to naught”, he declared.

Over 1,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State have defected to the Labour Party, citing the people-oriented and infrastructure-driven administration of Governor Alex Otti as their reason.

The defectors which include over 91 key political stakeholders with large followership, were formally received into the Labour Party during a civic reception held in honour of Governor Otti at the Township School, Akwete, Ukwa East LGA, on Thursday.

The event also witnessed the endorsement of Governor Otti as sole candidate for future political aspirations by stakeholders in Ukwa East, led by former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Welcoming the new members on behalf of the party’s National Working Committee, the Governor assured them of equal opportunities, pointing out that the Labour Party was big enough to accommodate everyone committed to the progress of Abia.

He expressed his administration’s readiness to expedite action in facilitating the completion of key projects aimed at boosting economic activities and accelerating development in the oil-producing area.

On power supply, Otti assured residents that electricity would be restored to Ukwa East before the end of March.

He directed the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities to immediately address outstanding technical issues, noting that the area might only require transformers and smart meters to reconnect to the grid.

In the Healthcare Sector, the Governor announced that 11 primary healthcare centres in Ukwa East had undergone renovation and upgrading while four are currently operational with five are expected to become functional within 30 days, and the remaining two within 45 days.

He noted that the facilities were being adequately staffed and equipped to guarantee efficient healthcare delivery.

Governor Otti pointed out that the newly flagged-off General Hospital project in Ohanku marks the beginning of comprehensive secondary healthcare reform in the area.

Addressing infrastructure concerns, the Governor disclosed that he had instructed the Commissioner for Works to assess and finalise plans for the completion and extension of the remaining stretch of the Ohanku Road into Ukwa East.

He also spoke on the ongoing Obohia–Ndoki Road project, explaining that it involves the construction of drainage tunnels to channel floodwaters into the Aba River.

Despite the financial implications, Governor Otti assured residents that the projects would be completed in line with their requests, stressing that road connectivity remained central to his administration’s economic blueprint.

On the issue of boundary disputes, Governor Otti said he has held discussions with his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Pastor Umo Eno, aimed at fostering lasting peace in the affected border communities.

He noted that both administrations had agreed to continuous engagement, adding that their deputies had already met to ease tensions and stabilise the area.

In the Agricultural Sector, Governor Otti announced that the Abia State Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an international firm specialising in palm production and processing to revitalise the Abia Palm plantation.

He said the company would soon commence operations, a move expected to boost employment and agro-industrial activities.

On Education, Governor Otti disclosed that the State recruited 5,394 teachers in 2025 and was in the process of employing an additional 4,000 and added that the recruitment process, which attracted about 36,000 applications, would remain merit-driven.

The Governor who stressed that successful candidates must be willing to accept postings to any part of the State, with hardship allowances provided where necessary, also ordered immediate temporary repairs of deteriorating school buildings observed at the event venue, pending full rehabilitation.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, the lawmaker representing Ukwa East State Constituency, Hon. Lewis Obianyi, said the number of defectors exceeded 1,000, noting that the 91 earlier announced were leaders with large followings.

Hon Obianyi said the decision to join the Labour Party was informed by the level of development witnessed in Abia State under Otti’s leadership.

He described Governor Otti as performance-driven, noting that his achievements has positioned the State as a reference point nationally.

The lawmaker commended the Governor for flagging off the General Hospital project in Ohanku and for ongoing road and power projects in the area, assuring him of sustained support from the people.

The Chairman of Ukwa East LGA, Mr Chibunna Akara, in his remarks, listed ongoing projects in the area to include the General Hospital, a Magistrate Court nearing completion, two Smart Schools, 11 retrofitted Primary Healthcare Centres, Digital skills training for 80 youths, Educational Support for 300 students, construction of access roads, installation of 10 solar-powered boreholes across political wards and the development of four evening markets.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) domiciled inside Aba General Hospital.

The commissioning of the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre marks a significant milestone in Abia State’s justice and social protection architecture – signalling a united front between government, development partners, and civil society groups to eliminate gender-based violence and uphold the dignity and rights of all citizens.

Commissioning the project on Wednesday, February 18th, at the Aba General Hospital, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to ending gender-based violence (GBV) in Abia State.

He described sexual violence, child molestation, and assault as an aberrations, alien to the values of our society, and stressed the need for reorientation and collective responsibility to eradicate such crimes.

“We must get to a point where centres like this will become unnecessary because the behaviour they address no longer exists.

“While we embrace technological and social advancement, we must also return to the enduring values that uphold dignity, respect, and human decency”, Gov Otti stated.

Governor Otti expressed profound gratitude to the Honourable Minister for Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, for honouring the State with her presence and for her steadfast leadership in advancing protection services nationwide.

Gov. Otti also commended the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for her deliberate and passionate advocacy against gender-based violence, as well as the Commissioners for Justice, Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, and Health for their collaborative efforts in delivering the project.

The Governor further acknowledged the support of the European Union for its initial one-year funding commitment, expressing optimism for extended partnership.

While noting the requests for additional centres, he announced that the State would commence with two additional facilities, with the broader vision of reducing the prevalence of GBV and ultimately eradicating it.

Governor Otti directed immediate action to address infrastructural concerns within the hospital premises, particularly facilities linked to the School of Nursing.

The Governor directed the Special Adviser on Health to submit a comprehensive proposal for the upgrades, emphasising that all public institutions must reflect the administration’s standard of excellence.

Referencing ongoing improvements at Abia State University, the Governor assured students and staff that visible transformation would soon be extended to the hospital environment, saying that,

“We cannot allow our children to study or receive care in environments that are not decent and presentable”, Gov Otti stated.

Speaking, the Minister for Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, while describing GBV as a widespread and underreported threat to human security, public health, and national stability, noted that Nigeria currently has over 50 Sexual Assault Referral Centres across 24 States, which have supported more than 58,000 survivors.

The Minister, who said that the establishment of the Nchedo SARC represents a strategic, integrated, and confidential response model that improves Justice outcomes and survivor’s healing, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to policy reform, institutional strengthening, and women’s economic empowerment initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of violence, while calling for an end to silence, stigma, and impunity.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, described the Nchedo SARC as a landmark intervention, providing coordinated, survivor-centred services.

She explained that the Centre offers 24-hour access to emergency medical care, forensic examination, counselling, legal guidance, and social support under one roof while reducing trauma and strengthening access to justice.

The Commissioner further highlighted that the centre complements broader Justice-sector reforms, including the Sexual Offenders Register and strengthened prosecution systems, underscoring the State’s resolve to ensure that no survivor walks alone as a National Commitment to Ending GBV.

The World Bank Representative and Task Team Leader for the Nigeria for Women Project, Mr. Michael Ilesanmi, commended the Abia State Government for demonstrating strong commitment to gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

On his part, Dr. Danladi Plang of IDEA revealed that more than 50 SARCs nationwide have supported over 50,000 survivors as of December 2025.

He advocated sustained funding, replication of the model across the States, strengthening prosecution mechanisms, and the establishment of shelters for survivors requiring safe accommodation.

In his remarks, Mr. Ruben Alba Aguilera of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS disclosed that the EU has invested over ₦2 billion in supporting Sexual Assault Referral Centres across the country. He emphasised the importance of prevention, protection, and sustainability beyond donor funding.

The Abia State Government has introduced a comprehensive Education Management and Information System (EMIS) designed to centralise and digitally integrate Education data across Public and Private schools in the State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu explained that EMIS would warehouse all education-related data at the Basic and Secondary levels into a unified central database to improve planning, measurable outcomes and data-driven policy decisions.

According to the Commissioner, all Public and Private Schools across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State have received secure login credentials to access the platform.

He noted that the system supports the issuance of the Abia Learners Identification Number (ABSLIN), a unique identification number for every Pupil in the State.

“The Education Management and Information System (EMIS) documentation exercise in our Primary and Secondary Schools across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State is ongoing. The exercise supports the issuance of Abia Learners identification number ABSLIN.

“All Public and Private schools in the State have received secure login credentials for EMIS access.

“EMIS, of course, is integrating education data and processes at Basic and Secondary levels into one central database. The system will support the efficient management of schools, data-driven development, and planning of measurable outcomes in schools”, Prince Kanu said.

The Commissioner revealed that the second batch of the State’s Teacher Recruitment Exercise is progressing with a total of 36,415 applications received, out of which 24,023 candidates have been shortlisted for the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

He said the date for the CBT would be announced in due course adding that the State Government employed 5,394 teachers, while the target for the second batch is 4,000 teachers.

Prince Kanu further disclosed that the Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme for the 2025–2026 academic session has resumed across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.

He said that a sensitization campaign is currently ongoing to boost enrolment, particularly among school dropouts, traders and artisans.

Prince Kanu who highlighted the achievements in the Education sector under the Otti led administration, announced that Abia State emerged as the overall best-performing State at the recently concluded National Basic Education School Sports Games, clinching eight gold medals in athletics.

He said that the trophies were presented to Governor Otti during today’s Executive Council meeting, adding that the Governor has pledged to formally host the victorious team.

Prince Kanu also noted that Abia State has for the past three years, consistently ranked as the best-performing State in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, describing the achievement as evidence that the Otti led administration’s Educational reforms are yielding measurable results.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, who provided clarifications on the EMIS and ABSLIN initiative said it would enable government to monitor each learner’s academic journey from entry to completion of Basic Education.

“The Integrated Education platform you talked about is what we refer to as EMIS. Education management and information system. This is a system where every data that has to do with education is warehoused.

“What we intend to do in this very respect is what we call ABSLIM, Abia State Learning Students ID card. Where every child that is in the Basic and Secondary Education will have an identification number.

“When there is an identification number, the progress of the child will be monitored right from the inception until the person exits the basic education. That’s what we intend to do.

“With this, we’ll be able to monitor the progress, the movement, because we noticed that our children move from one school to the other abruptly, anyhow, without any control.

“The Ministry (of Education) will be in charge of the movement of our children from one school to the other, be it private or public. That’s what we intend to do with this”, Elder Ubochi revealed.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinard Ekeoma was present during the briefing.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti, has congratulated former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), on his 70th birthday, describing him as a symbol of bravery, courage and sacrifice.

Governor Otti said this on Friday night at a public lecture titled, “Leading Nigeria Forward: Strategies for Security and National Cohesion,” organised by Abia Government, to mark Ihejirika’s 70th birthday.

Ihejirika, a native of Ovim in Isiukwuato Local Government Area of Abia State who was born on February 13, 1956, served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from September 2010 to January 2014 and was the first Igbo officer to hold the position since the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

Speaking at the event held at the International Conference Center Umuahia, which drew an array of dignitaries from across the country, including President Bola Tinubu, Senior Military officers (serving and retired), and captains of industry among others, Governor Otti paid glowing tributes to Ihejirika’s service, leadership and contributions to national security.

The Governor said that Ihejirika’s birthday was deliberately marked alongside the commissioning of landmark projects such as construction of the Omenuko bridge and the 30 Kilometers Abam-Ndiokereke-Arochukwu road, to honour his service and commitment to the state and nation.

He said politics should prioritise service over personal interests and that leadership must challenge entrenched norms, noting that Ihejirika’s steadfast commitment to the collective interest of Abians has earned him enduring respect

The Governor said that Ihejirika was appointed Chairman of the Abia State Security Council on merit and that his contributions had strengthened security within the state.

He urged public office holders to serve diligently, stressing that the opportunity to lead demands integrity and courage.

In his speech, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Uche described Ihejirika as “a patriot, courageous general, Pan-Nigeria and a fine gentleman” who served Nigeria at a very turbulent period in the war against insurgency and acquitted himself very credibly.

President Tinubu prayed God to grant the celebrant good health and long life so that the nation would continue to draw from his wealth of experience in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive leadership within the nation’s security architecture, noting that Ihejirika was the last Service Chief from the South-East before his administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.

President Tinubu said he appointed Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla from the South-East as Chief of Naval Staff on June 19, 2023, and Air Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff in October 2025, noting that the appointments reflected deliberate efforts to promote national cohesion.

He called for unity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should strengthen rather than divide the country.

Also, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), recounted professional encounters with Ihejirika, describing him as a leader who mentored officers and strengthened operational strategies, including the introduction of long-range patrols which influenced his own command approach.

Contributing, the Minister of Works, Sen Dave Umahi described Ihejirika as a man of integrity and courage who promoted officers strictly on merit, saying that his tenure addressed perceived marginalisation and strengthened institutional fairness.

Sen Umahi called for unity in the South-East, urging leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and support development initiatives.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by the Chief of Standard and Evaluation for the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Thompson Ugiagbe, described Ihejirika as a man whose life has been marked by service and whose contributions significantly enhanced national security.

He urged residents of the South-East to support the Nigerian Army with timely intelligence and cooperation.

Earlier, the sister of the celebrant, Mrs Oluchi Chigbu, described her brother as a beacon of hope and pillar of support to the Ihejirika family and prayed God to bless the him with good health, longlife and greater blessings in the years ahead.

In his remarks, Ihejirika thanked God for preserving his life and enabling him to witness the milestone, said he was overwhelmed by the turnout of over 200 generals and numerous officers at the celebration.

The retired Lieutenant General recalled early mentorship from senior officers who guided and prepared him for military service, adding that the mentorship instilled confidence and discipline that shaped his military career.

He described missing promotion from lieutenant-colonel to colonel as a setback that later influenced his eventual appointment as Chief of Army Staff adding that he survived several accidents unharmed, which he attributed his survival to divine providence.

Ihejirika said that he never viewed his career through the lens of ethnicity or marginalisation

noting that he rose to occupy virtually every key command position open to an army officer.

He urged Nigerians to rise above divisive sentiments and embrace unity and emphasised that genuine national cohesion remains the bedrock for sustainable progress and development.

The Birthday celebration, chaired by Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu(rtd), featured a keynote address by the former Governor of Kaduna State, Sen. Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has called for proactive and harmonised security measures to forestall electoral violence across the country.

Sen. Akume who made the call, on Thursday, at the opening ceremony of the Federal and State Security Administrators Meeting in Umuahia, warned that voter registration, party primaries and campaigns could heighten tensions if not proactively managed.

The SGF represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Office, Mr Mohammed Danjuma, said robust security architecture must precede full-scale political mobilisation.

“As you are aware, the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections. The political activities, including updating of voter registers, party primaries and election campaigns, among others, are expected to commence soon in this year.

“These activities require robust security arrangements for their smooth conduct”, the SGF stated.

He noted that the Federal Government had, in anticipation of electoral threats, established the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in 2015 to ensure peaceful, free and credible elections.

According to him, the committee is chaired by the National Security Adviser at the federal level, with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission as co-chair, while similar arrangements operate in the states under Resident Electoral Commissioners and Commissioners of Police.

Sen. Akume stressed the need for tighter synergy among security agencies, INEC and political stakeholders, and called for early intelligence gathering as well as strict enforcement of electoral laws to curb the activities of political thugs and hoodlums.

He also warned against false narratives capable of fuelling panic, ethnic and religious tension capable of undermining trust in public institutions and directed the National Orientation Agency and related bodies to intensify strategic communication to counter misinformation ahead of the 2027 polls.

The SGF who described security as a collective responsibility, appealed to citizens to volunteer credible information to support ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry and organised crime, particularly as the nation approaches another election cycle.

He further described the choice of the South-East as host of the meeting as evidence of improving stability in the region and commended the Federal Government, Security Agencies and the Abia State Government for collaborative efforts in restoring calm.

In his speech while officially declaring the event open, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti linked electoral credibility directly to national stability, and insisted that security planning for 2027 must begin immediately.

Governor Otti noted that credible polls require early planning and adequate security arrangements, adding that INEC must be centrally involved in all security discussions to guarantee free, fair and peaceful elections.

The Governor described security as the bedrock of governance and development, warning that investments, infrastructure growth and job creation could not thrive in an atmosphere of political uncertainty.

He advocated what he termed “operational federalism”, where federal security structures and State authorities work in deliberate alignment, particularly during election periods.

Governor Otti called for strengthened joint planning frameworks, rapid response mechanisms and structured communication channels among Security Agencies, stressing that coordination must be intentionally designed and continuously improved.

“Security is not an isolated function of force, it is the enabling environment for prosperity. Nigeria’s constitutional framework places significant security authority at the federal level, while states remain closest to the people and most immediately impacted by insecurity.

“This reality calls for what I would describe as operational federalism, a model where federal government structures and state-level administrative responsibility work in deliberate alignment.

“We must continue to strengthen intelligence sharing mechanisms, joint planning frameworks, rapid response coordination and structured communication channels between federal agencies and sub-national authorities”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor further advocated predictive security systems, early warning structures and community-based intelligence, noting that grassroots leaders and traditional institutions remain critical in preventing politically motivated unrest.

He urged participants to ensure that deliberations at the conference produced practical, measurable outcomes capable of enhancing national stability and reaffirmed Abia’s commitment to collaborative security governance.

The Co-Chair of the meeting and Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, in an interview with Journalists, said the forum was designed to review the nation’s security situation and prevent fragmentation in operational responses, especially during politically sensitive periods.

Prof Tar explained that the platform, established in the 1990s, convenes representatives of Security Agencies, the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and key Federal Institutions to assess threats to national security and territorial integrity.

He said the meeting, held at least twice annually, allows States to present situation reports while Federal Agencies provide operational briefings to align responses and reduce duplication of roles.

Speaking at a peace meeting held at Akirika Obu, the Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, urged both communities to embrace peace so that the road project could be completed smoothly.

Engr. Emetu made it clear that the meeting was not meant to decide land ownership or boundary issues, explaining that such matters fall under the responsibility of the National Boundary Commission. He said the major concern of both state governments is the successful completion of the road project for the benefit of the people.

“We are not here to determine boundaries. That is the duty of the National Boundary Commission,” he said. “Our concern is that this road is completed because once the road is tarred, development and prosperity will follow.”

The Deputy Governor revealed that both Abia and Akwa Ibom State Governments have approved the road construction from their respective ends, noting that the two sections will meet at the disputed area, pending official boundary demarcation.

He appealed to the communities to live peacefully, reminding them of their long-standing social and cultural ties. “You intermarry and live together. Why fight over land that you will one day leave behind?” he asked.

Engr. Emetu commended the security agencies for maintaining peace and warned troublemakers to desist from actions capable of disrupting harmony. He assured that both state governments would no longer tolerate any act that threatens peace and development in the area.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator (Dr.) Akon Etim Eyakenyi, also called on all stakeholders to embrace peace and allow the road project to proceed without hindrance.

She stressed that development cannot take place without good road infrastructure and explained that the intervention of both governments was purely to promote peace, progress, and shared prosperity. She also praised the Governors of Abia and Akwa Ibom States for their commitment to development and inter-state cooperation.

In his remarks, the Commander of the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ohafia, Brigadier General Hassan M. Bello, said the presence of the military in the area was solely to ensure security and support peaceful dialogue. He downplayed the boundary dispute, noting that the two communities share common cultural and family ties.

He emphasized that the Nigerian Army was not deployed to determine boundaries but to support and enforce peaceful resolutions reached by the appropriate authorities. He warned that any attempt to disrupt peace would be firmly handled, adding that the Chief of Army Staff fully supports the peace process.

Brigadier General Bello urged all parties to cooperate with constituted authorities and see the road project as a shared development that will benefit everyone, regardless of future boundary decisions.

In their separate remarks, the Mayor of Ukwa East Local Government Area, Chief Chibunna Akara, and his counterpart in Ika Local Government Area, Hon. Utibe Nwoko, appealed to their communities to give peace a genuine chance and allow the road construction to continue.

They stressed that the project is meant for the collective good and should not be disrupted.

The peace meeting, which was attended by government officials from both states, community leaders, and security personnel, marked a major step toward strengthening inter-state cooperation and ensuring lasting peace and sustainable development in the area.

Abia State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amena Tourism and Hospitality Innovation Technology Solutions to digitally standardise, grade and classify Hotels and Hospitality facilities across the State.

Speaking on Tuesday while performing the exercise at the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Mr Matthew Ekwuruibe, said the initiative was designed to ensure that no hospitality establishment in Abia goes unnoticed, including on international platforms.

Mr Ekwuruibe who described the initiative as a landmark intervention, said the project aligns with the vision of the Governor Alex Otti-led administration to impact every sector of the economy.

The Commissioner said it would enhance safety, build visitor confidence and guarantee quality standards within the hospitality sector.

According to him, the exercise, expected to last between four and five months, will involve touring all parts of the State to identify, document and assess hospitality facilities.

He explained that the grading and classification process would be fully digital, incorporating geolocation, photography and other advanced technological tools, adding that only facilities that meet approved standards would be listed on the online platform.

Mr Ekwuruibe said the initiative would enhance traveller confidence by providing consistent hospitality standards and assuring both domestic and international visitors of quality and reliability.

He noted that it would also improve service delivery by raising accommodation standards and encouraging healthy competition among operators, while fostering economic growth through job creation.

“The project will strengthen the tourism value chain by stimulating growth in related sectors such as transport, food services, crafts and cultural exhibitions”, he said.

The Commissioner further explained that the initiative would boost security and regulatory compliance by enabling the government to maintain a verified register of graded hotels, thereby reducing risks for travellers and ensuring proper oversight of operators.

“With a click, you will be able to locate where you want to sleep or rest, or even the restaurant and all the rest of them.

“It’s also going to enhance security and when we are done with also the law of tourism, a lot of things will be made mandatory. We are talking of security as people might not be able to lodge in hotels without a proper ID card.

“It is also going to enhance the quality of the hospitality industries in Abia State, bringing it to a certain standard”, he said.

Ekwuruibe said lessons had been drawn from tourism laws in other states, noting that certain standards would be made mandatory, including proper identification for hotel lodging, as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve service delivery.

He disclosed that the State Government had provided a ₦10 billion counterpart fund through the Bank of Industry to support the initiative.

According to him, hospitality businesses that fall below the required standards would be encouraged to access the loan facility to upgrade their facilities, noting that the loan attracts a single-digit interest rate of between 7.5 and 8 per cent.

“The State Government has also provided a loan scheme through the Bank of Industry, it’s actually a 10 billion Naira counterpart fund.

“Also, during this period of classification and grading, we will also encourage some of the hospitality industries that are not up to standard to access this loan provided by the present administration.

“This is to enable them to enhance whatever they feel is not up to standard in their industries.
“It might also please you to know that this loan goes for only 7.5 or 8 per cent interest rate which you can’t find anywhere”, he said.

The Commissioner announced that stakeholder engagement would commence before the end of the first quarter of the year, urging hotel owners and associations to participate actively in the process.

“I am encouraging hotel associations to come out en masse because without them, this project cannot be implemented effectively”, he said.

He added that extensive groundwork had already been completed, including the development of a digital application for enumeration and mapping, incorporating geolocation and other advanced features rather than manual data collection.

Mr Ekwuruibe further addressed longstanding concerns about uniform charges, explaining that the new grading system would classify hotels into one-star, two-star and higher categories.

“At the end of the classification, hotels will no longer pay the same fees, as registration and renewal rates will be based on their star ratings”, the Commissioner said.

He pointed out the initiative would boost the State’s internally generated revenue while ensuring transparency and proper revenue collection

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ikechukwu Uwanna, commended the organisation for its collaboration with the State’s legal team in finalising the service-level agreement.

Barr. Uwanna said the agreement would usher in a new era for the hospitality sector in Abia by creating a robust database that would enhance security and promote transparency in the operation of hospitality businesses.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Amena Tourism and Hospitality Innovation Technology Solutions, Mr Edosa Eghobamien, said the project goes beyond existing ECOWAS and Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) standards by integrating technology into hospitality grading and classification.

He described the digital application being deployed as a home-grown solution developed entirely by his team, adding that the platform had been strengthened to be fraud-proof.

Eghobamien commended the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy for his professionalism and transparency, noting that the initiative would promote standardisation, boost business for hospitality operators and increase government revenue.

He expressed gratitude to the Abia State Government for the opportunity, assuring that a comprehensive final report would be submitted at the conclusion of the exercise.

The Abia State Government has inaugurated a seven member Administrative Panel of Inquiry headed by Justice Kenneth Wosu Rtd to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the recent crisis in Okun Aku, Ohafia Local Government Area, which reportedly led to loss of lives and heightened tension in the Community.

Inaugurating the panel in his office, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, said the decision was taken by the State Government in response to the gravity of the incident and the need to restore lasting peace.

“We are all aware that a couple of days back, there erupted a very serious Community crisis in Okun Aku, in Ohafia Local Government of Abia State, leading to loss of life, according to the pictures that we saw. And the community has been in disquiet since then.

“In the wisdom of this Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, it has been directed that this administrative panel of enquiry be empanelled in order to determine the remote and immediate causes of that conflict and disquiet in that community”, the Commissioner said.

Prince Nwachukwu explained that findings by the panel would guide the State Government’s decisions and interventions.

According to him, the terms of reference of the panel include investigating the remote and immediate causes of the crisis, identifying individuals, groups, institutions, or bodies directly or indirectly involved in the escalation of the conflict and examining the role of the traditional institutions, youth groups, leadership structures and other stakeholders in the conflict.

Other mandates of the panel, he said, are to review the administrative, socioeconomic, cultural, and security dimensions of the crisis, recommend measures to ensure lasting peace, harmony, justice, and communal cohesion and propose sanctions where appropriate, against individuals, groups, or bodies found culpable.

The Commissioner added that the Panel is also expected to make any further recommendations deemed necessary in the interest of public peace and order and sustainable community relations.

“The Panel is expected to review the administrative, socioeconomic, cultural, and security dimensions of the crisis. 

“Number five, we are expected to recommend measures to ensure lasting peace, harmony, justice, and communal cohesion. Number six, we are expected to recommend sanctions, where appropriate, against individuals, groups, or bodies found culpable.

“Number seven, we are expected to make any further recommendations deemed necessary in the interest of public peace and order and sustainable community relations”, he said.

Prince Nwachukwu disclosed that the Panel has been given 30 days, effective from the date of inauguration, to submit its report to the Ministry.

He thanked members of the Panel for accepting to serve the State and expressed confidence in their capacity to discharge the assignment diligently.

Responding on behalf of the members, the Chairman of the Panel, Hon Justice Kenneth Wosu (Rtd), emphasised the importance of peace to development, describing peace and progress as inseparable.

Justice Wosu who commended Governor Otti for the peace enjoyed in the State, noted that the decision to set up the panel showed that the State Government had not taken the crisis lightly, but was determined to address it decisively.

“We all know that His Excellency is doing everything to ensure that there is peace and progress in our state, and peace and progress are like twin brothers. You cannot have one without the other.

“So I believe that it is in that spirit that he hasn’t undermined the crisis that is in question and has decided to empanel us in order to enable his government, the Commissioner, to take appropriate policy decisions in addressing the issues”, the Panel Chairman stated.

He thanked the State Government for the confidence reposed in them, assuring that with the calibre of its members, including traditional rulers and other Stakeholders, the Panel would carry out a thorough and impartial assignment.

Justice Wosu further assured the Government and people of the State that the Panel would give its best and be guided by fairness and diligence in the discharge of its duties.

“We guarantee that we will do our best and believe that God will guide us accordingly”, he said.

Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Dr Linus Nto Mbah, has commended Governor Alex Otti for his impressive array of people-oriented and economy-boosting projects executed across the state in 2025.

Speaking on Sunday, while interacting with Journalists in his office in Umuahia, the Royal Father said the scale and spread of infrastructural development under the Otti administration has significantly improved socio-economic activities and the quality of life of residents.

Eze Nto Mbah particularly highlighted major road projects undertaken by the State Government, including the Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Alayi–Abiriba Road, Ndiokereke–Abam–Amuvi–Arochukwu Road, Ohafia–Ihechiowa–Ututu–Arochukwu Road, and the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road, Aba, among several others across different parts of the State.

The Traditional Ruler noted that the Otti led administration made notable strides in the Education and Health sectors in 2025.

He listed the renovation of public schools, the recruitment of over 5,000 teachers, the retrofitting and upgrading of Hospitals, as well as the employment of additional Healthcare workers, as key interventions that had strengthened public service delivery in Abia.

The Monarch also expressed appreciation to Governor Otti for extending Christmas largesse to Traditional Rulers in the State, describing the gesture as a mark of respect for Traditional institutions.

Abia State Government on Sunday joined the rest of the country to observe the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Thanksgiving service with Governor Alex Otti leading tributes to fallen Nigerian soldiers.

The interdenominational Thanksgiving Service at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral, Umuahia and organised by the Abia State Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Legion, Abia chapter, to honour both the living and fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otti described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn reminder of the price paid by men and women who gave their lives to secure Nigeria’s unity and peace.

He lauded the armed forces for working in synergy with other Security Agencies and the people of Abia to maintain relative calm in the State.

“I want to thank service commanders for their labour of love we cannot take it for granted. 

“We also want to thank our people for the massive support they are giving to the government.

“It is the armed forces, working with other security agents, working closely with the government, and of course our people, who are the chief security officers of their environment.

“The collective efforts have produced the results that we have”, the Governor stated.

Governor Otti reiterated that security remains a priority for his administration, noting that sustained engagement with security stakeholders has been institutionalised.

“For us, safety and security is our priority, and that’s why, virtually every month we sit down with all the service commanders and the Chairman of Council of Traditional Rulers to hold a security council meeting, where we review what has happened and map out strategies for the next month”, he stated.

The Governor assured Abians that his administration would continue to serve the people without distraction and pointed out that governance under his watch is inclusive.

“We will continue to work for our people, nothing can distract us. I want to assure you, that this government is a government of the people and not a government of few”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor expressed optimism that 2026 would bring significant progress to the state, adding that the changes already being witnessed would be sustained through the implementation of the year’s budget.

He also extended condolences to families of fallen heros and urged them to remain strong.

In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Michael Kalu Ukpong, called on members of the Armed Forces to emulate Cornelius, the biblical army officer known for his fear of God, humility and devotion to prayer.

He reminded soldiers that they are servants of the people and should not intimidate those they are meant to protect, while urging them to embrace a life of prayer.

“We are celebrating Armed Forces Celebrations and Remembrance Day.

I ask our brothers and sisters in the military, how often do you pray?

“Always pray and be prepared, even if you are not in the war front, you have to pray. Every soldier needs to be in good terms with the Lord”, the Catholic Bishop emphasized.

The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Thanksgiving service featured a thanksgiving procession led by Governor Otti, special prayers for the Abia State Government, as well as prayers for the repose of the souls of departed soldiers, the protection of serving personnel and continued peace in the State and the Country.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations, NEMA Imo/Abia Office, Mr. Igwe Nnamdi, disclosed that a dedicated monitoring team comprising officials of NEMA, the Nigeria Red Cross Society, and the FRSC has been deployed to strategic locations across the state to monitor traffic flow and respond promptly to emergencies.

He added that the team is supported by a fully equipped operational ambulance to provide immediate medical assistance when required. Mr. Nnamdi urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid speeding, stressing that campaign messages such as “Slow down, drive within limits” and “Slow down, arrive early” are central to the initiative.

As part of the sensitisation exercise, the Operation Eagle Eye team also visited major highways within the Umuahia metropolis, where road safety awareness flyers were distributed to motorists and pedestrians.

The campaign is expected to run throughout the festive season and beyond, reinforcing the Abia State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on the state’s roads.

Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the operation was launched following a distress call on 5 December 2025 after gunmen invaded Ushafa community and abducted several residents.

A joint team comprising operatives of the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS) mobilised to the area and began a systematic search-and-rescue mission. Acting on intelligence, the team tracked the kidnappers through the outskirts of Mpape toward Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The suspects opened fire on the security team, prompting a fierce exchange during which one victim was rescued. The operatives continued the pursuit for over seven hours across difficult mountainous terrain.

Their efforts led to the discovery of the kidnappers’ main camp inside Kweri Forest, where another heavy gun battle ensued. Under sustained pressure, the criminals fled, abandoning six additional victims who were rescued and taken to hospital. All seven victims are reported to be in stable condition.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, praised the operatives for their professionalism and bravery. He has ordered heightened deployments along vulnerable corridors to prevent further attacks.

This follows widespread scientific reports confirming toxic contamination linked to multiple used lead-acid battery recycling plants operating in the area.

Consequently, the Senate has summoned the Ministers of Environment, Health, Solid Minerals, and Labour and Employment, as well as the Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), to appear before its Committee on Environment and Solid Minerals for an urgent briefing on the unfolding crisis.

According to the Senate, unchecked activities of the factories have escalated into a major public health emergency. Children, women and factory workers are reportedly suffering long-term, life-altering health conditions after years of exposure to hazardous emissions.

To contain the crisis, the Senate approved a series of sweeping emergency measures, including:

Immediate deployment of medical teams by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to conduct free toxicology screenings, blood-lead tests, chelation therapy and long-term treatment for affected residents.

Comprehensive environmental remediation by the Federal Ministry of Environment and NESREA to assess contamination levels in soil, groundwater, air and household dust.

Establishment of a National Lead Poisoning Response and Remediation Office within the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to coordinate cleanup operations, medical intervention, monitoring and global traceability of exported lead.

The Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance has been mandated to ensure full implementation of the resolutions within six weeks.

Contamination Levels 186 Times Higher than Than Safety Limits

The resolutions followed a joint motion sponsored by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East) and Senator Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), who warned that Ogijo is now facing “an environmental catastrophe of global significance.” Scientific assessments show contamination levels as high as 186 times above internationally accepted safety standards.

Presenting the motion, Senator Abiru expressed deep concern over the years-long health complaints reported by residents, including persistent headaches, abdominal pain, seizures, memory loss and cognitive decline — symptoms strongly associated with prolonged lead exposure.

After extensive debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Committee on Legislative Compliance to monitor the execution of the resolutions and report back to the chamber within two months.

The Abia State Government says it has heightened security across the State ahead of the Yuletide, following increased security concerns in parts of the country.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Commander MacDonald Uba (Rtd), gave the assurance on Thursday, while briefing Journalists after the monthly Security Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The meeting, which had in attendance the heads of all Security Agencies operating in the State, reviewed ongoing operations and adopted fresh measures to reinforce public safety ahead of the Yuletide.

“We just arose from the normal monthly security briefing. As you know, we are approaching the Yuletide season, so it is expedient for His Excellency the Governor to invite all the Government Security Agencies working with him and that is what we’ve done. 

“His Excellency (Gov Otti) has briefed us, It is a normal monthly security briefing and we’ve done it as we always do every month”, Uba explained.

Commander Uba assured residents that existing security structures had been reinforced adding that Security Agencies were on high alert across the State.

He added that Abians should expect increased security presence in strategic locations, noting that the State Government is responding to National Security trends.

“The normal security is in place. There will be heightened Security. You know the level of insecurity in the nation as a whole so we are not taking anything for granted. 

“The normal security patrols, the normal duties will be carried out, so that is the position.

“We are pledging that the Government Security Agencies will ensure that we have a hitch-free Yuletide season this period”, Commander Uba assured.

He urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with Security Agencies to ensure seamless operations throughout the festive period.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, gave the directive on Monday, while presiding over a high-profile meeting with leaders and stakeholders of Ogbia Kingdom at the Golden Tulip, Yenagoa.

He emphasized that, Ogbia Brotherhood founded in 1940 had played a vital role in promoting the unity and development of its Kingdom in particular, and Bayelsa State in general, and therefore, must not be allowed to collapse as a result of personal interests of few individuals in the community.

He disclosed that, the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri has directed that the dawdling leadership conflict in the organization should be resolved without any further delay, in honour of the former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, also in the best interest of the Ogbia people and the state collectively.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo urged the people of Oloibiri in Ogbia Kingdom, to work within the next three weeks they pleaded for during the meeting, in order to present the Chairman and other nominees, as part of the executives of Ogbia Brotherhood without delay.

He said, government will set machinery in place, to ensure the inauguration of the organization’s new leadership with or without their nominees at the end of the ultimatum.

“Ogbia Brotherhood has been a social torchlight that beams the light of unity and development among our people over the years, a very prominent organization, which predates most of us who are here. The contributions of the Ogbia Brotherhood to the development of Bayelsa, Nigeria, and the world cannot be overstated. And that is why every reasonable person must make sure that, that light keeps shining. So, we must first all look for the lubricant to keep that light burning, without going dim. Is unfortunately that, for quite sometime now it has been going through some leadership problems, which I consider as mere brotherly misunderstanding. So, I want to appeal to our people, particularly the Oloibiri Clan to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness which is the main key to resolve this ongoing misunderstanding and dispute’, he stated.

‘It is in this regard that, the Governor has directed that we must resolve the issues without any further delay. I have always insisted that every problem has a solution. So, we must collectively resolve this problem amicably.

Responding to the Oloibiri clan’s appeal, he said, “Government has granted your request for three weeks. But let me make it very clear that whether you succeed or fail to present your nominees at the end of the three weeks, Ogbia Brotherhood would go ahead to inaugurate the already cleared nominees from the other clans.”

Speaking on behalf of the Oloibiri Clan, former Secretary to State Government, Prof. Edmund Allison-Oguru, assured the state government that critical stakeholders of the clan, including Dr Goodluck Jonathan, would meet to reconcile their differences and present credible individuals to fill its positions in the leadership of Ogbia Brotherhood.

He appreciated the effort of the State Government to resolve the leadership impasse in the Ogbia Brotherhood, which he admitted, has lingered for some time.

Those who attended the meeting are the members representing the three Ogbia constituencies in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Gabriel Ogbara, Hon. Godknows Obein, and Hon. Richard Ibegu, as well as the Secretary to State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei and other top government functionaries. The #EndSARS protests, which began as a youth-led movement against police violence, reached a tragic climax on October 20, 2020, when live ammunition was fired at protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos. Several lives were reportedly lost and many others sustained injuries. The Nigerian government, then led by the late President Muhammadu Buhari, denied that any deaths occurred, a claim protesters and eyewitnesses have consistently disputed.

Despite widespread outrage and the establishment of judicial panels of inquiry across several states, some stakeholders say justice has not been served and meaningful police reform remains elusive.

Former Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and member of the EndSARS National Panel, John Aikpokpo-Martins, told our reporter that the government has failed to act on the panel’s findings.

“About 70 to 80 officers were indicted for extra-judicial kiIIings, but none has been punished. Nothing has come out of the panel’s recommendations,” Martins lamented. “The only aspect that was partially implemented was compensation — and that did not even come from the federal government. It came from the National Human Rights Commission’s budget. So, effectively, the federal government never did any compensation.”

Human rights activist and lawyer Higher King also shared his concerns, noting that police misconduct, which briefly reduced after the protests, is gradually resurfacing.

“Immediately after EndSARS, police brutality reduced. But over the past year, we are beginning to see the same ugly patterns again. I don’t think the recommendations were ever taken seriously,” he said.

In Rivers State, the spokesperson for the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, Solomon Lenu, accused both state and federal authorities of merely pretending to heed citizens’ demands. According to him, extortion and abuse by security agents remain widespread.

“The extortion and killings have not ended. Every day, Nigerians suffer one form of torture or another from those meant to protect them,” Lenu said. “Today, when you drive and see a checkpoint, your heart skips because those security agents often act against us rather than for us. The government pretended to have listened during EndSARS, but in truth, they never did.”

As Nigeria marks the fifth anniversary of the historic protest, many citizens believe the struggle for justice, accountability, and true police reform is far from over.
