Abia State Government has commenced plans to review and re-gazette autonomous communities across the state as part of efforts to restore order, strengthen grassroots governance and address recurring communal disputes.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Saturday at the JAAC Secretariat in Umuahia during a statewide meeting of Presidents-General of towns and developmental Unions.

The meeting was convened by the State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Prince Nwachukwu said the exercise had become necessary due to the irregularities observed in the existing structure of autonomous communities, noting that the last gazetting was carried out about 11 years ago.

“We are embarking on review of autonomous communities. If we go to our gazettes, as carried out about 11 years ago, when the last gazetting was done, we are overdue, but we are supposed to have re-gazetted by last year because it’s done once every 10 years.

“You see all sorts of operations. You will find instances where one village is gazetted into two autonomous communities.

“You will find instances where one village is in one community but certain kindreds and families are in another community. Those are confusions.

“There are situations where a traditional ruler, in his domain, who is a custodian of an autonomous community, has his village ceeded to another Traditional Ruler.

“So he has become a subject of that Traditional Ruler. Are you aware of those things? Those are operations. So this year we are going to do a regazeting.

“These things call for crisis. There is no week I receive anything less than 50 petitions in my office. None!”, he stated.

The Commissioner explained that the persistent disputes arising from such anomalies informed the establishment of conflict management and mediation centres in all local government areas of the State.

He further announced that the government would institutionalize town and development Unions to ensure proper coordination and accountability at the grassroots level.

“We want to institutionalize town and development Unions. So, you (participants) can find out that your details have been taken. We want to make sure, who the leaders of these town and community development Unions in the various communities are.

“So we want to make sure we are doing documentations. The same kind of thing that is happening with traditional institutions, where two, three, four, five people will go through the process of being elected traditional rulers of their places.

“And then one person will win, the other four will not agree. And everybody, four of them or five of them will go to the local government and insist that they must be received. And all of them are received.

“We are putting a stop to all those for the sake of the progress of our land. So we are creating a statewide database”, he said.

Prince Nwachukwu emphasised that the government has no interest in determining who emerges as President-General or community development chairman, but insisted that due process must be followed.

He described the meeting as a decisive step towards strengthening grassroots governance, noting that town and development Unions have historically driven rural development but have recently been weakened by poor structure, lack of documentation and leadership conflicts.

Prince Nwachukwu who clarified roles within the community leadership system, stated that traditional rulers remain custodians of culture and symbols of unity, while Presidents-General and development Unions leaders serve as administrators and drivers of development.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (rtd.), described the meeting as a novel initiative and stressed that security remains a collective responsibility.

He urged community leaders to take intelligence gathering seriously, noting that effective security depends on timely information sharing.

In their remarks, the Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Afuruobi, and a representative of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Sampson Jinanwa, pledged continued collaboration with development uynions to enhance peace and development at the grassroots.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, said the meeting marked the beginning of a new phase in the state’s efforts to strengthen community governance.

“This engagement has therefore be convened to establish a direct interface between government and the leadership of town and development unions”, she said.

Leaders of various communities, including Dr Greene Nwoha of Oro-Ibere Autonomous Community, Chief Yuccee Ottah Uwah of Abiriba Communal Improvement Union Worldwide, and Hon. Chukwudi Edward Egwuonwu of Ozuitem Community, commended Governor Alex Otti for convening the meeting, describing it as the first of its kind and expressing optimism that it would enhance security, peace and development across the state.

Governor Alex Otti of AbIa State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to enhance engineering standards and infrastructure development across the State.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving a COREN delegation led by its Registrar, Engr. Prof Austin Uche, during a courtesy visit at his office in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

The Governor commended the Council for its professionalism and pledged sustained partnership with the body, noting that adherence to engineering standards remained critical to the durability of infrastructure in the state.

He said the government would consider the council’s request for logistics support, including the provision of an operational vehicle for its State monitoring team, within available budgetary provisions.

“We will explore ways of supporting your request within the limits of our budget”, Governor Otti said.

He also directed the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority to inspect and assess the condition of the road leading to COREN’s state office for possible intervention.

Governor Otti added that the State’s direct labour agency, manned by competent engineers, possesses the capacity to handle the rehabilitation of the access road efficiently.

Earlier, Engr Prof Uche reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Abia State Government to promote engineering standards and infrastructure development.

He commended the Governor’s support for the engineering profession, noting that COREN, established by law in 1970, remaines committed to regulating engineering training, education and practice nationwide.

Uche recalled the inauguration of the Abia State Technical Committee and Expatriate Monitoring Committee on February 27, 2025, describing them as key platforms for engineering regulation, monitoring and enforcement.

According to him, collaboration between COREN and State Governments is vital to ensuring sustainable infrastructure through proper maintenance and strict adherence to standards.

The registrar also praised the presence of qualified engineers in the Abia State Executive Council, including the Deputy Governor, who is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and urged the State Government to sustain the trend.

He noted that strong engineering representation in governance had contributed significantly to development in countries such as China.

Uche appealed to the Governor to provide an operational vehicle for the state monitoring team to enhance effective oversight of infrastructure projects.

He further drew attention to erosion challenges affecting the road leading to COREN’s state office in Umuahia and called for urgent intervention.

Uche commended the present administration’s strides in road construction, public facilities and institutional reforms, noting that they had boosted economic growth and improved residents’ quality of life.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has fulfilled his administration’s promise to restore stable electricity to Abia State University (ABSU) with the commissioning of a 5MVA power substation assuring that a larger independent power project is underway.

The power project is designed to distribute electricity across the University campus through multiple sub-transformers and ensure that once there is supply on the national grid, the entire University receives power.

The facility which also includes fault isolation provisions will be powered initially by gas turbines with plans to transition to renewable energy over time.

Speaking on Friday, at the ceremony which forms part of activities marking the combined 30th -34th convocation ceremony of the institution, the Governor described the development as “promise fulfilled”.

He further revealed that the State had already signed a contract for a more robust and independent power solution for the University and surrounding communities.

Governor Otti explained that the new power facility would not only serve ABSU but also extend electricity to Uturu, other adjoining communities and boost socio-economic activities in the area.

The Governor who also commissioned the three fully rehabilitated Hostels A, B and C, which were upgraded by his administration as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and welfare for students in the institution, as well as flagged off the construction of a 5,000-capacity female hostel, and construction of the Faculties of Agriculture and Law within the University,

He commended the University authorities for complying with the State Government’s directive to upgrade facilities at the institution noting that the projects were already gaining momentum.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me start by thanking the University Authority of the Abia State University Uturu for seeing that the directive that the government gave is being carried out.

“I’m glad that the 5,000 capacity female hostel has already taken up. The construction is ongoing and today we are here to perform the foundation laying ceremony for the 5,000 capacity female hostel,” he said.

Governor Otti expressed happiness that the faculty of Law had already started making progress in terms of construction and reiterated that all campuses of the institution will be domiciled in the Uturu campus with the exception of the ABSU teaching Hospital in Aba.

The Governor while reiterating his administration’s commitment to deliver dividends of democracy to the people, stressed that governance must be centred on addressing the needs of the people.

“We thank God for the opportunity to be here and to solve problems. The essence of government is to solve problems, not to create problems”, he said.

Governor Otti stressed that the completed projects would improve living conditions for the students, enhance their learning environment and attract better academic excellence.

The Vice Chancellor , Prof Ndukwe Okeudo, in his remarks lauded the initiatives of the Otti led administration, and his desire to set to the development of the University.

He said that the timely interventions of the Otti led administration in the institution would among others significantly ease accommodation challenges and strengthen capacity at the Institution.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has promised to remove all encumbrances hampering the commencement of the implementation of the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development (ABSID) project in the State having paid the State counterpart funding of 2 billion naira.

Governor Otti made the pledge on Tuesday at his office in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, while receiving a joint delegation from the Federal Ministry of Finance and the African Development Bank (AfDB) on a supervision and monitoring mission for the ABSID project.

The Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project, a 263.8 million dollar initiative launched in the State last year focuses on urban renewal in Aba and Umuahia, specifically rehabilitating over 248 km of roads, managing solid waste and controlling gully erosion among other key projects.

The governor expressed dissatisfaction with delays and poor feedback from relevant officials, noting that he had previously been misinformed about the causes of the setback.

He reiterated that the State has met its financial obligations, including payment of the State’s 2 billion naira counterpart funding and maintained that the slow pace of progress was unacceptable.

Governor Otti further stressed that idle funds were detrimental to the state’s interests, noting that resources already committed for the project must be effectively utilised to deliver tangible results.

He directed that all bottlenecks be resolved immediately and instructed that the project must be flagged off in April, rather than mid-year as earlier suggested by the delegation.

“You are talking of flag off mid year. No, we have to flag off next month, which is April. Whatever it takes, we must flag off April”, Governor Otti declared.

He also ordered the immediateYou drafting and signing of required documentation, mandated weekly progress reports and reassigned oversight responsibilities to the Chief of staff, Dr Caleb Ajagba and the SSG, Dr Emmanuel Meribeole to ensure accountability.

The governor assured that the State would act swiftly to remove all bottlenecks and fully collaborate with federal government and development partners to deliver the project within the stipulated timeframe.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Assistant Director African Financial Institutions, Dr Oyebola Akande commended Governor Otti for his administration’s Infrastructural strides across the State especially the release of the 2 billion naira counterpart funding, describing it as a landmark for the project.

Dr Akande expressed concern that although the project was approved in 2023 and became in effective in 2024, no major work has commenced despite two years already spent within its five-year lifecycle.

She stressed the urgent need to accelerate implementation, warning that delays in disbursement and bureaucratic bottlenecks could lead to financial losses and called stronger coordination among stakeholders to prevent the project from exceeding its lifespan.

Also speaking, the AfDB representative, Engr. Mrs Sheila Akyza, said that the project is designed to benefit the people of Abia State and must be implemented promptly to achieve value for money.

Engr. Akyza noted that strict adherence to the bank’s procurement processes is essential and called for better alignment between project implementation units and the bank to avoid delays.

She also stressed that compensation of Project Affected Persons (PAPs) is a prerequisite for construction to begin, noting that funds have already been made available for the purpose.

Earlier in his brief, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti said the joint delegation from the Federal Ministry of Finance and the African Development Bank were in the state on a supervision and monitoring mission.

He explained that their goal was to engage the State Government on ways to accelerate the
Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development project and ensure smooth implementation.

Abia State Government has resolved to install speed breakers on major roads across the cities in a bid to curb rising cases of over-speeding and reduce the risk of road accidents.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu said the decision followed concerns that the ongoing construction and reconstruction of roads, particularly in Umuahia, had inadvertently encouraged excessive speeding by motorists, thereby endangering lives.

The Commissioner added that the installation of speed breakers was aimed at mitigating the growing danger and enhancing road safety across the State.

“With the construction and reconstruction of some of the roads in Umuahia, the lives of some commuters now appears to be at risk as a result of over-speeding”, he said.

The Commissioner further announced that the State Government has approved the release of funds to accelerate the completion of ongoing projects adding that work has commenced on several urban beautification initiatives.

Prince Kanu listed the beautification initiatives to include, roadside tree planting, landscaping of designated public spaces, repair and painting of kerbs, as well as the installation of road signs.

According to him, key roads earmarked for the programme include Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, Library Avenue and the stretch from Shoprite through Aba Park, noting that protective guard wires had been installed along some routes to safeguard newly planted trees.

Prince Kanu also disclosed that significant progress has been recorded at the Afara Relief Market project site, where construction of perimeter fencing had been completed and compensation paid to affected landowners.

On road infrastructure, he revealed that the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) is set to commence the rehabilitation of internal roads within the Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia.

He listed other ongoing and proposed road projects to include the construction of Umuokoro Road linking BCA Road to Ikot Ekpene Road in Ohokobe Ndume, the New Heaven Junction to Isi-Court Road in Umuahia South, Uzzi Ossah Road and the rehabilitation of Mgbarakuma–Nsirimo Road.

He added that the road linking the International Conference Centre to Winners Church/ASEPA Road would also be constructed, while the Michael Okpara statue would be retrofitted.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the State has expanded its development framework with the establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), to complement the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) and UCDA, with a view to extending development to other parts of the State.

He noted that since its inception, GODA had embarked on strategic road projects aimed at improving connectivity within Ohafia and across the Abia North Senatorial Zone, including the 1.53km Amaekpu-Ohafia Ring Road, the 300m Ezeukwu Road in Bende, the 2.35km Ezera Road in Isuikwuato, Okoronta Road in Ohafia, erosion control works spanning 850m in Bende and maintenance of the 4.5km Abiriba–Nkporo Road, among others.

Prince Kanu disclosed that direct labour works are ongoing in 51 locations across the State, adding that two projects including the maintenance and asphalt overlay of the 3.65km Abiriba Road from Orieagwa Junction to Amaogudu Roundabout and the 1.12km Okpuala–Umuala–Nbawsi Road has recently been completed.

He also announced that the State would hold a burial service in honour of the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

Contributing, the General Manager of UCDA, Mr Kingsley Agomuo, said the installation of speed breakers was a proactive measure to safeguard road users..

Also speaking, the Director-General of GODA, Obinna Odum, said the agency was established to drive development in Abia North, beginning with Ohafia.

He explained that the road projects being executed in the area were designed to link various local government areas and improve access for the evacuation of agricultural produce.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, is set to commission key projects at Abia State University as part of activities marking the institution’s 30th – 32nd combined convocation ceremony.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, while briefing Journalists, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by the Governor.

Prince Kanu also announced that the combined convocation ceremony is scheduled to hold on Friday, 27 March 2026, with activities beginning a day earlier.

According to him, Governor Otti would not only commission completed projects at the Institution but will also flag off new ones aimed at expanding infrastructure in the University.

He said: “The Governor will commission three rehabilitated hostels, named Hostels A, B and C. He will also flag off the proposed Faculty of Law, the proposed cafeteria, the proposed 5,000-capacity male hostel, the proposed 5,000-capacity female hostel and the proposed Faculty of Agriculture”.

The Commissioner explained that a renowned energy expert and founder of Geometric Power, Bart Nnaji, will deliver the convocation lecture, while the university will confer honorary degrees on distinguished Nigerians.

He listed those to be honoured to include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Chairman of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyema and the founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries, Mrs Stella Okoli.

He noted that the conferment of honorary degrees on the recipients was in recognition of their outstanding contributions to national development in their respective fields.

Prince Kanu reiterated the State Government’s resolve to reposition ABSU as a leading institution of higher learning in Nigeria through sustained investment in infrastructure and quality education.

The Commissioner further revealed that the State Executive Council had approved the handover of the University’s Osisioma campus to Dr Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic as its permanent site.

“This is most significant as it signifies the growing visibility and viability of our tertiary institutions in the State and the increasing interest of students in Abia State institutions”, Prince Kanu said.

He added that the development would further strengthen technical education in the state and provide additional infrastructure for the fast-growing Polytechnic.

Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security in Abia State through strategic collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, pledging to allocate additional land for the establishment of a Special Forces Training Centre at the proposed Abia Airport.

Governor Otti stated this, Tuesday when he received the Ground Training Commander of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Kehinde, who led a delegation on a visit to appreciate the State Government’s support and deepen existing security cooperation between the State and the Air Force.

The Governor thanked the Nigerian Air Force for approving the establishment of a base in Abia State and disclosed that the State Government will increase the land earlier allocated to the Air Force at the proposed airport site from 50 hectares to at least 100 hectares to support the planned Special Forces Training Centre.

He said: “We are going to work with the team to see how we can at a minimum increase the space to at least 100 hectares. You can take it for granted that you have at least 100 hectares of land in that place (Airport site).

Governor Otti further assured the delegation that the State Government would facilitate the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy for the land within 30 days.

Governor Otti disclosed that the ongoing office complex being built for the Nigerian Air Force in Umuahia would be completed before the end of April.

The Governor explained that the proposed airport project is in partnership between the Abia State Government and the Federal Government, with the State handling the runway while the Federal Government is responsible for the terminal building.

According to him, discussions are already ongoing with the Federal Ministry of Aviation to ensure the timely completion of the project.

The Governor further stressed that security remains the most critical responsibility of government, noting that development efforts would amount to little without safety and stability.

Earlier, the Ground Training Commander of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Kehinde commended the Abia State Government for its proactive efforts in strengthening security and supporting the operations of the Nigerian Air Force.

According to him, intelligence and operational security reports across the South-East indicate that Abia stands out positively compared to other States in the region.

“Comparatively, Abia State is well ahead of other South-East states. Abia is standing out and I cannot but agree this does not happen accidentally. It must be a proactive effort”, he said.

Air Vice Marshall Adebayo also disclosed that the Chief of the Air Staff is interested in expanding the Air Force presence in Abia State, particularly at the Airport site with the establishment of a Special Forces Training Centre for job training and jungle warfare.

He further revealed that the Chief of the Air Staff plans to visit Abia personally to appreciate the State Government’s efforts and assess facilities being developed by the State Government to support Air Force operations.

AVM Adebayo lauded the quality of ongoing projects inspected during the visit, including accommodation for airmen and officers as well as infrastructure at the airport site.

He added that the establishment of the Nigerian Air Force training facility in Abia would significantly enhance security across the state and the South-East region.

Abia State Government has commenced a pilot Digital Healthcare Programme in select hospitals as part of efforts to migrate from manual to technology-driven medical services across the State.

Governor Otti who disclosed this on Friday night during the February edition of his monthly media interaction with Journalists tagged, “Governor Otti Speaks“, said that the ongoing digital transition in the state is already delivering measurable and positive results.

“In terms of digital health care programmes, we have started a pilot programme in select hospitals. The whole idea is to migrate from manual to digital. It is looking quite good. Our people are happy”, the Governor said.

He recalled that upon assumption of office, his administration declared a state of emergency in critical sectors including Health, Environmental Sanitation and Infrastructure, noting that significant progress had been recorded in the sectors.

Governor Otti revealed that the phase one of the Project Ekwueme Primary Healthcare intervention programme is coming to a close with 200 Primary Health Care Centres retrofitted, rebuilt and remodelled across the State.

“All the 200 primary health care centres are now in place and are retrofitted, rebuilt or remodelled. Some of them have not been functionalised because we insist on minimum standards in terms of equipment and in terms of health care professionals.

“We have given the directive that in the next four to six weeks all of them should be functionalised”, he stated.

The Governor added that recruitment of Healthcare personnel is ongoing to ensure adequate staffing, while the State is also implementing the World Bank-supported IMPACT project.

According to him, 77 additional Primary Healthcare Centres have been rehabilitated under the World Bank scheme, bringing the total to over 270 healthcare facilities once fully operational.

Governor Otti disclosed that the State has engaged Quantus Medical Foundation, a United States-based firm, to train healthcare professionals in line with global best practices.

“We know a lot of them are highly qualified. But then, just like every other thing, the information age makes it compulsory that things continue to change. So we want our people to be updated”, he said.

The Governor revealed that the newly flagged-off General Hospital in Ukwa East Local Government Area; the first secondary healthcare facility in the council since its creation, will serve as a referral centre for Primary Healthcare facilities across the area and strengthen access to quality medical services for residents.

He noted that work is also ongoing in several Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, as well as specialist hospitals in Amachara and Umunnato.

On infrastructure, Governor Otti said his administration has intensified work across 31 road projects under the Ministry of Works, in addition to projects handled by the Greater Aba Development Agency and the Greater Ohafia Development Agency.

The Governor revealed that approval has been granted for the establishment of an SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba to support small businesses, particularly in the technology and phone repair value chain, adding that land has already been acquired for the project.

On workers’ welfare, Governor Otti said that payment of leave allowances had commenced and that his administration was addressing outstanding entitlements owed to former elected councillors between 1999 and 2022.

He also confirmed that the State Government has reacquired the moribund Afro Beverages Company from AMCON and is receiving expressions of interest from prospective investors with similar interest shown in the revival of Star Paper Mill.

“So the whole idea for government is to ensure that those companies go back to work and ensure that our people, who hitherto were employed in those places, even if it is not all of them, but others to get jobs in those places.

“It is not our preference to run those companies. We want to cede them to the private sector, not just somebody who has money, but we want to be sure that those companies do not run aground anymore”, he stated.

On the Nsulu Airport project, the Governor said compensation payments to affected landowners has resumed, with over 4,000 out of 10,000 claimants already paid.

“I understand there are close to 10,000 claimants, and at the moment over 4,000 have been paid. So we are taking them step by step. 

“We first of all took the people we acquired the proposed runway, which is what is going on now. The construction of the runway is going on very well. So we first of all settled them, and we are now taking them village by village. 

“In the spirit of transparency, we had made the Honorable Commissioner for Land to publish the names of claimants to the communities, so there’s nothing that is hidden. Of course, we are not ruling out sharp practices, but we are also very, very ready to deal with anyone that we see.

“I can assure you that everyone who should be compensated will be compensated. Work is going on uninterrupted at the Nsulu Airport project”, he affirmed.

Governor Otti further disclosed that reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, to be managed by Radisson Blu, had commenced, with a total of 250 rooms and an international convention centre planned upon completion.

In the Education sector, the Governor announced progress in the recruitment of 4,000 teachers, revealing that 36,000 applications were received, with 24,000 shortlisted for computer-based tests.

On power, he said efforts were underway to restore electricity to Ohafia and Ukwa East LGAs adding that the State is working towards acquiring a 60% majority stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to facilitate improved supply.

Addressing security concerns, the Governor maintained that no part of Abia State was under the control of non-state actors and assured residents of security of lives and properties.

“We will continue to do everything that we need to do to ensure that all of you can sleep with your two eyes closed, and I’m happy that results are positive. 

“There is no territory that is under the control of non-state actors in Abia State, and there will never be. We have put everything to security. We have professionals who are also supporting us.

“We set up the Security Trust Fund, we set up the Security Advisory Committee, and they are working very hard together with the security agencies, the police, the DSS, Nigerian Army, Navy.

“Everybody is working together to ensure that this place remains safe. And the logic is simple. If this place is not safe, everything we are doing will come to naught”, he declared.

The Business School of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has taken a significant step toward institutional growth and global relevance with the formal inauguration of its Board of Directors.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, held at the University’s New Public Lecture Theatre, the Commissioner for Transport in Abia State, Dr Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, expressed deep gratitude to the University’s Governing Council and Management for the confidence reposed in the newly constituted Board.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti will on February 25th formally flag off the reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, Aba as part of the State’s industrial transformation agenda, with a focus on revitalising the hospitality sector.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this weeks Executive Council Meeting presided over by the Governor.

Prince Kanu said the Abia State Government, represented by Enyimba International Hotel Limited, had about a year ago signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Radisson Blu Group, an international hospitality brand, which will manage the facility upon completion.

According to the Commissioner, the hotel, which will be retrofitted and renovated to Five-Star standards, will have 250 rooms upon full completion, beginning initially with 155 rooms before scaling up.

The Commissioner disclosed that the fully operational Enyimba International Hotel is projected to generate 5,500 direct and indirect jobs and significantly boost the State’s Internally Generated Revenue.

“It is worthy to note that when fully operational, the facility will provide about 5,500 direct and indirect jobs. 

“The Abia State Government aims to boost its Internally Generated Revenue from the Five-Star hotel facility. 

“The hotel project will help the State Government to drive its economic growth, boost Internally Generated Revenue and provide the State with a robust presence in the Nigerian hospitality industry”, he said.

Prince Kanu disclosed that the State Ministry of Works is currently undertaking direct labour projects at 14 locations across the state with four road projects already completed.

The Commissioner listed the projects completed to include the maintenance of the 14.8-kilometre Alayi–Ugwueke Road in Bende Local Government Area, construction of the 1.1-kilometre Awomukwu–Umusokoro Road in Ikwuano LGA, the 900-metre Umusokoro–Umugwo Road, also in Ikwuano LGA and the 9.1-kilometre Umunkpeyi–Umuru–Okpokiri Road in Isialangwa South LGA.

Prince Kanu said that new direct labour works have commenced on the 280-metre St Patrick’s School Crescent, Agbama, Umuahia South LGA; the 1.43-kilometre access road into Umuobia Housing Estate, Umuahia South LGA and maintenance of failed portions of the 5.2-kilometre road leading to Ugwunagbo Local Government Area Secretariat.

He added that the State currently has 31 ongoing contract projects and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has announced that provision has been made in the 2026 budget for the reconstruction of the Egbelu–Etiti–Eziama–Ntigha–Imo River Road, a critical route linking several communities in Isialangwa North Local Government Area of the State.

Governor Otti disclosed this while speaking at the 13th anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of the Founder of the Marian Missionary Sisters of Ad Regnum Dei, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, held at the Sanctuary of Mary Immaculate, Egbelu-Etiti Ntigha, Isialangwa North LGA.

The Governor also revealed that the access road leading to the skills acquisition centre established by Archbishop Nwachukwu at Owerrinta has equally been captured in the 2026 budget.

He further assured that his administration would convene a meeting with the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to address some lingering projects in the State.

Governor Otti while congratulating Archbishop Nwachukwu on the milestone, described the cleric’s life and ministry as one defined by compassion, selfless service to God and commitment to humanity.

He commended the Archbishop for his enduring contributions to spiritual growth and human development, particularly through education and skills acquisition initiatives.

He explained that religious life demands complete self-giving to God through the vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, and the embrace of a transformed way of life.

The Archbishop, who serves in the Roman Curia as Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, noted that while religious vocation may appear humanly difficult, it is made possible by God’s grace.

Drawing from Christ’s teaching on the rich young man, he called on believers to embrace conversion, renewal, unity, gratitude and selfless service to God and humanity.

The Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA) has formally assumed full regulatory oversight of the State’s Electricity market, following the completion of a six-month transition process from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ASERA, Mr Emeka Onyegbule, disclosed this on Tuesday, while briefing Journalists in Umuahia, describing the development as a major milestone in Abia State’s power sector reform.

Mr Onyegbule said the takeover was anchored on the 2023 constitutional amendment which empowers States to generate, transmit and distribute Electricity within their territories, thereby enabling them to establish independent electricity markets and regulatory institutions.

According to him, Abia State responded promptly by enacting the Abia State Electricity Law in April 2025, laying the legal foundation for a State-owned Electricity market.

He explained that the ASERA board was constituted by the Abia State House of Assembly on April 29 and subsequently inaugurated by Governor Alex Otti on April 30, marking what he described as the formal birth of Abia State’s Electricity market under a State regulatory framework.

Mr Onyegbule noted that NERC issued an interim order on June 24, 2025, granting States a six-month window to complete the transition, which involved setting up institutional structures, appointing a governing board and building regulatory capacity.

“Today is a very significant milestone in the life of the ASERA as we have completed the six-month transition as at yesterday.

“So effectively from today, the responsibility and the mandate to regulate oversight and manage the Abia State’s Electricity Markets falls on ASERA and no longer NERC”, he said.

Mr Onyegbule explained that the authority considered it necessary to brief the media first, given the significance of the development for Electricity consumers and Investors in the State.

According to the ASERA Boss, the new regulatory framework will bring electricity regulation closer to the people, eliminating delays associated with seeking redress from NERC.

“Residents will no longer need to wait for NERC to resolve electricity complaints. ASERA is here to protect consumers and ensure they are treated fairly by operators,” he said.

He added that the ASERA would strike a balance between effective regulation and improved service delivery as well as strengthen consumer protection mechanisms across the State.

Mr Onyegbule disclosed that ASERA has commenced the development of operational regulations for the Electricity market, assuring that stakeholders and the general public would be adequately engaged before the regulations are finalised.

He said the establishment of ASERA would also boost investor confidence, noting that Electricity supply remains critical to Abia State’s economic development and industrialisation drive.

The ASERA Boss explained that the State electricyity market would provide a platform for generators, transmission companies, distributors and consumers to interact, adding that a competitive market would reduce dependence on the national grid.

According to him, competition would drive efficiency, enhance service quality and ultimately improve power supply to households and businesses.

Mr Onyegbule further identified consumers as key participants in the electricity market, being the final buyers of power.

Addressing concerns over estimated billing, Mr Onyegbule said ASERA would ensure fairness and transparency in billing practices, stressing that estimated bills would be closely monitored to prevent excessive charges.

He identified improved metering infrastructure as the long-term solution to billing disputes, adding that ASERA aims to attract investments that would close the metering gap in the State within the next three years.

Mr Onyegbule pointed out that the establishment of ASERA signals a new era in Electricity governance in Abia State, anchored on accountability, efficiency and improved service delivery.

In his remark, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr Ikechukwu Monday, said that the establishment of the State’s Electricity market remains critical to achieving the Abia 25-Year Development Plan and accelerating industrialisation.

Monday said that the journey to operationalising the Electricity market began on March 17, following Gov. Alex Otti’s assent to the Abia State Electricity Law, adding that electricity remains central to economic growth, investment attraction and improved service delivery to consumers across the State.

The Commissioner added that the new electricity market had been designed to be world-class, investor-friendly and consumer-focused.

Mr Monday expressed confidence that the ASERA board would effectively handle consumer complaints and regulatory oversight noting that the establishment of the market marked a major step in allowing Abia to control its electricity future.

He said that ASERA has been empowered to issue metering and billing licenses to encourage private investment in meter deployment, noting that the improved metering would ensure fairness by allowing consumers to pay only for electricity consumed.

The Commissioner explained that Electricity costs vary based on generation sources such as gas, hydro or solar, adding that tariffs in Abia would now be cost-reflective and determined under the State’s regulatory framework.

He said that the law also provides safeguards, including subsidies, to protect vulnerable and less-privileged consumers pointing out that with ASERA in place, electricity decisions would now be taken within Abia State, not in NERC.

Also, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Okey Kanu, said the formal establishment of ASERA followed the enactment of the Electricity Law 2025 to transform the electricity sector.

Kanu said that the new law empowered the State to create ASERA as an independent statutory body to regulate the Abia Electricity market.

He said that the development represents a major regulatory milestone and one of the signature achievements of the Gov. Alex Otti administration in Abia’s Electricity ecosystem.

Executed by the Federal Government in collaboration with the Abia State Go‌vernment and par⁠tnersh‍ip with the Niger Delta Po‌wer Hold‌ing Company (NDPHC), the project is also expected to transfo‌rm power supply in Umuah⁠i⁠a and strengthen the e‌lectricity‍ in⁠frastructure across Abia Stat⁠e.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held behind the State Secretariat, Ogurube Layout Umuahia, Governor Otti said that the Abia State Government would execute a 7.5MVA injection substation alongside the NDPHC 7.5MVA substation project to boost electricity supply.

The Governor who titled his speech; ” Energy and Development noted that the State’s matching facility was included in the 2026 budget.

He added that the dual project would strengthen power supply in Umuahia and support industrial growth across the State capital and neighbouring communities.

Governor Otti revealed that NDPHC’s contractors proposed a 12-month delivery timeline but insisted the project be completed within six months.

The Governor pledged that the State Government’s 7.5MVA substation would be delivered within three months of budget approval to ensure rapid completion.

He commended NDPHC for expanding power infrastructure and deepening its investment footprint through ongoing work at the Alaoji Power Plant, stressing that reliable electricity is critical for industrial growth, job creation and attracting investor confidence across Abia State.

Governor Otti highlighted recent gains in the Aba Ring Fenced Electricity Corridor as proof of sustained sector reforms improving supply reliability.

He said policy frameworks, prepaid metering, and upgraded distribution assets had strengthened power delivery and accessibility across the State.

Governor Otti said that Abia has acquired State wide distribution infrastructure outside Aba to accelerate electricity access for more communities.

He explained that the mini-grid policy and the Abia Electricity Regulatory Authority would ensure fairness, transparency, and investor protection in the power sector.

Governor Otti described Abia as open to long-term investment, offering a stable regulatory environment and strong market prospects for electricity developers.

The Governor urged NDPHC to prioritise accelerated project delivery, noting the strategic importance of the substations for households and businesses.

He thanked the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities for supporting the State’s energy roadmap and expressed optimism that the dual project would ensure sustainable development.

In her address, the Managing Director of NDPHC, Ms Jennifer Adighije, said that the project comprised a 1×7.5MVA, 33/11kV injection substation, 1kilometre of 33kV line, 1.2 kilometres of 11kV line and two 300kVA distribution substations.

Adighije, represented by the Executive Director, Networks, NDPHC, Mr Bello Babayo Bello, said that the facility would strengthen Umuahia’s distribution network which had faced technical constraints, and support projected demand growth from 18MW to about 25MW.

She said that the project aligned with the Federal Government’s power sector agenda under President Bola Tinubu and directives of the NDPHC Board chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Adighije commended Governor Otti for collaborating with Federal Agencies and investing in strategic sectors, pointing out that the State is now better positioned for improved power reliability.

In his remark, the Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Mr Emmanuel Emeruwa, said the legislature had passed an energy investment law that would be used to support ongoing and future power projects and assured continued legislative backing.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr Ikechukwu Monday, in his address,
described the project as a major step in the State’s power transformation agenda that would address longstanding distribution gaps.

Mr Monday also said that the project would improve electricity distribution and ease pressure on the overloaded feeder serving the capital and neighbouring communities.

He thanked God for using Governor Otti to make the project a reality, stressing that the provision of light, water, and other essential amenities was a clear demonstration of the Governor’s genuine commitment to the welfare of ABSU students and to promoting quality education in Abia State.

He recalled that the hostels had previously been in terrible condition, forcing students to go outside the campus to meet basic needs.

“With these new hostels, we now have constant light, water, reading tables, and chairs. We no longer need to worry about going outside for night classes or fetching water. This will really encourage us to study harder”, she said.

Miss Nwaokorie thanked Governor Otti for the intervention and urged him to extend the development drive to other parts of the University.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has declared that work on the proposed Seaport at Ukwa East LGA of the State would only commence when adequate funds are secured to ensure its completion.

Governor Otti who disclosed this, Wednesday, at his Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA office, when he received a delegation of the Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association said that although the project remains a priority, he would not allow it to start without the certainty of funding.

“I was the one that came up with the idea that we needed a seaport. The Chinese that are working with us have turned in their feasibility reports and clearly, a lot of dredging is required.

“From that report, if I’m not mistaken, we need to dredge about 19.5 kilometres to the high sea, so that is not consistent with the preliminary initial report that we got.

“To do this kind of work requires a whole lot of money. We have now gone back to the drawing board because before we start any project, a lot of things are important to us.

“One, we must ensure that it is viable. Two, before we start, we must see the money, so that we don’t start a project and abandon it or delay it”, the Governor stated.

Governor Otti added that partnerships, approvals and licences must also be secured before the project can take off, noting that his government would not allow it to become an abandoned scheme.

“So we will not start the seaport project until we are very sure that we have the funds available”, the Governor reiterated.

Responding to concerns raised about some ongoing road projects, Governor Otti assured the people of Ukwa that his administration would not abandon any road projects midway but will see them through to completion.

He explained that the Akirika-obu route, which begins from Obingwa and terminates in Akwa Ibom was still under construction and disclosed that challenges on the Obohia road were being addressed.

The Governor explained that the Obohia road project required a new tunnel after discovering that the original one had been blocked, pointing out that constructing a new tunnel would be more effective and cost-efficient.

Governor Otti reassured the people of Ukwa people of his administration’s commitment to their development and thanked them for appreciating the modest achievements of his administration over the past 27 months.

Earlier, the Mayor of Ukwa East LGA, Mr Chibunna Akara, told the Governor that many stakeholders in the area had accepted to join his “moving train”, and commended the Governor for his transformational leadership across the State.

In his remarks, the leader of the delegation and President of the Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association, High Chief I. N. Ahunanya, urged the Governor to give attention to the Ukwa seaport and some ongoing road projects, while pledging the group’s support for his re-election bid in 2027.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has hailed the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a $125 million Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) facility for the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project (ABSIID), describing it as “a direct complement to the visionary infrastructural development agenda” of his administration.

The approval, granted at FEC’s meeting on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, forms part of a $263.80 million co-financing package aimed at modernising Abia’s road networks, tackling erosion challenges, and revitalising its urban centres.

The financing arrangement comprises $125 million from the IsDB, $100 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB), $15 million from the Canada–Africa Development Bank, and $23.80 million in counterpart funding from the Abia State Government.

While the AfDB and Canada–Africa Development Bank agreements have been finalised— with the AfDB loan signed earlier this year, the IsDB facility is considered essential to unlocking the full funding for the project, given the integrated structure of the financing.

Under the IsDB-backed component, the project will deliver approximately 126 kilometres of road network in Aba and 35.57 kilometres in Umuahia, including a link road between the two cities, alongside critical erosion control works.

According to the Abia State Government, once completed, the project will: reduce travel time in Abia’s busiest corridors, create over 3,000 jobs for local residents, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve access to social services and attract private sector investment.

Governor Otti in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “for his trust and pragmatic leadership”, the National Assembly “for approving the borrowing plan”, and the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, “for his leadership in concluding the financing process”.

He also thanked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Vice President of the IsDB, Dr Mansur Muhktar, “who not only reached out in November 2023, but saw to it that internal approvals were received on the request for the facility”, as well as other stakeholders involved.

“This landmark project will complement my administration’s ongoing infrastructural development initiatives, aimed at modernising Abia’s transportation network, revitalising urban centres, and positioning the State as a hub for sustainable economic growth”, Gov Otti said.

The project will be executed through the State Ministry of Works under the supervision of a State Steering Committee, which will guide the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) and other stakeholders. Procurement for the IsDB-financed components will follow the Bank’s guidelines, with payments made directly to contractors and consultants.

The Abia State Executive Council has approved the increase in the number of the State’s Electric-Powered Mass Transit buses to be procured from 20 to 40, along with an increase in charging stations from 10 to 20.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Prince Kanu, “Out of the first 20 buses that will arrive in November, 12 will operate in Aba, while 8 will operate in Umuahia.

“From the additional 20 buses ordered by the State Government, some will operate on the Ohafia-Bende axis of the State”.

The Commissioner while noting that one of the electric bus samples was ready for inspection at the end of July, expressed optimism that the arrival of the buses would strengthen the ongoing revolutionary transformation of the transport sector in the State.

Prince Kanu further revealed that as part of the State Governments effort to support the transport sector, work is ongoing on the construction of Bus terminals in Aba and Umuahia, as well as junction improvement and the installation of bus shelters along designated routes.

On youth development, the Commissioner said the State Government through the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, in collaboration with Ethnocentric Ltd, has onboarded 1,200 Abia youths for the second cohort of the Skills Acquisition Program in garments and leather works.

“This program is designed to equip our youths with skills in garment making and leather works. The program so far has attracted over $3 million worth of sponsorship funding from the MasterCard Foundation.

“This huge injection of sponsorship funds into the Abia State economy is due largely because of the sterling governance credentials of His Excellency Dr. Lex Otti and how Abia State is currently perceived, not just in Nigeria but around the world”, Prince Kanu stated.

He further revealed that the State has launched the Abia State Creative Talent Hunt, an initiative targeting young innovators, especially in the music and digital creativity sectors.

Prince Kanu, highlighted preparations for this year’s Youth Week celebration themed “Youth Empowerment for a Sustainable Future”, scheduled for 6th to 12th August, as well as the acquisition of a wheelchair-accessible bus to convey disabled athletes to the upcoming international sports championships.

“The Sports and Youth Development Ministry is working assiduously towards the celebration of this year’s Youth Day, slated for the 6th to 12th of August 2025.

“This year’s theme is titled Youth Empowerment for a Sustainable Future. A number of activities have been lined up for this year’s celebration.

“A youth assembly, symposium and interstate youth exchange visit, among others, formed the programs for this year’s celebration”, the Commissioner stated.

He also revealed that three Abian-born players of the Super Falcons, who played key roles in Nigeria’s recent victory over Morocco at the WAFCON will be honoured by the State in December following their return from club duties in Europe.

On the Health front, Prince Kanu said that recruitment into the State’s Healthcare workforce is ongoing, with over 1,600 applications received so far and encouraged more qualified personnel to apply before the portal closes on 9th August.

“We therefore wish to use this medium to encourage more qualified medical personnel to apply for positions that are available, ranging from positions for nursing officers, medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, dental technologists, medical radiographers, optometrists, pharmacists, and medical/ dental officers”.

He said that efforts are ongoing to produce an all-year-round cultural compendium, which will include a calendar of festivals, licensed hotels, tourist attractions, and recreational spots across the state. The move is aimed at boosting tourism and investment in the hospitality sector

Mr Ekwuribe disclosed that the application portal for the TALENT HUNT programme which opened on 25th July, will close on 18th August 2025 and called on interested youths to apply via the State website, abiastate.gov.ng

He stated that the programme is open to individuals with tourism-inspired works, visual arts, talents in music, innovative engineering and digital creativity with tangible impact.

“We expect those that can maybe submit some tourism-inspired pieces and their visual arts.

“Digital creativity with physical impacts. Maybe those that can discover or build or curate something like maybe a flying helicopter, aircrafts, vehicles, and so many other things”.

He added that the current compilation of a comprehensive Cultural compendium by his ministry would also feature tourist attractions, licensed hotels, bars, eateries, clubs and lounges across the state to serve as a guide for tourists and residents and on the hoteliers to ensure that their hotels are registered with the State Ministry.

Abia State Government has commenced a comprehensive aerial mapping exercise covering 4,795.74 square kilometres of land to enhance urban planning, land administration, and efficient implementation of government projects across the State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this on Tuesday, while briefing Journalists on the outcome of thie week’s Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu stated that the exercise being executed by the Ministry of Lands and Housing includes “a radar and 2D light mapping of Abia, measuring about 2,220 square kilometres”.

“The Ministry of Lands and Housing is conducting an aerial imagery of 4,795.74 square kilometers of space. This includes a radar and 2D light mapping of Abia, measuring about 2,220 square kilometers.

“All these efforts are made to strengthen the efficient delivery of services on the Ministry. With this aerial mapping of our land space, it makes it easier for them to know where one is and areas where government will carry out projects”, Kanu noted.

Addressing the recent collapse of an uncompleted three-storey building around the Low-Cost Housing Estate Umuahia, belonging to Chief Ikechi Emenike, Prince Kanu disclosed that the site engineer has been arrested and is currently assisting the police in their investigations.

The Commissioner assured that the State Government will not tolerate negligence in construction practices and warned that all buildings without proper structural integrity would face regulatory sanctions.

“Government is committed to enforcing building regulations to the letter, and any developer or contractor found flouting these laws will face the full weight of the law”, he said.

Prince Kanu who also gave an update on the State’s ongoing road infrastructural projects, confirmed that the number of road projects under contract now stands at 30, following the completion of the Port Harcourt Road project, which is set for commissioning and assured residents that contractors are doing their best to deliver across all project sites.

He listed three recently completed road projects to include the reconstruction of failed sections of the 5 kilometer stretch Akanu Ibiam–Ohafia Road, maintenance of Eket Street–Niger Road by Calabar in Umuahia, and the construction of Jaja-Wosu Road in Aba.

According to the Commissioner, five new road projects have also been added to the State Government’s construction basket with one in Umuahia and four in Aba.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the iconic Omenuko Bridge and the first phase of construction on Ohanku Road are nearing completion.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, explained that the mapping project involves an “8-centimetre orthophoto capture” of the State’s landmass, as well as a topographical mapping of major cities including Aba and Umuahia.

“With mapping, we will be able to plan better. The mapping gives us a base map, a picture of how things are.

“It helps with the master planning of the State, which is already going on in phases, starting from Aba. It also helps us with our land administration system and the identification of our various assets, from agricultural to security assets”, Chukwumerije explained.

Speaking on the collapsed building, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr Kingsley Agomoh, said that the government had sealed off the site and evacuated occupants from nearby buildings constructed by the same engineer.

“There are three-storey buildings within that same space. The government has sealed off that site, and a thorough integrity test will also be carried out on the two remaining properties.

“Any reasonable government will ensure that the remaining two are sealed off. Government has also evacuated the people staying there until the investigation is completed”, he said.

Agomoh added that, “Every building above two floors is going to be subjected to an integrity test to assure every citizen that the places you are staying are fully protected.

He also emphasized the need for compliance with approved building plans, warning that the government has zero tolerance for professional misconduct and would sanction defaulters.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, stated that the outcome of the ongoing investigation will determine who will be held accountable.

“If the government agencies or agents failed to do what they were supposed to do, of course, it’s not only the builders that should stand punished. it’s going to be holistic”, Ekeoma stated.

The Abia State Government has announced the postponement of the official launch of the Abia State Integrated Wash Accelerated Programme and the flag-off of the rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme.

Originally slated for Tuesday, 15th July 2025, the events will now hold on Wednesday, 16th July 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, explained that the rescheduling became necessary following the public holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari, who is to be laid to rest tomorrow.

“The postponement is as a result of the Public Holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of the late former President”, Ekeoma stated, adding that the government deeply regrets any inconvenience the shift in date may cause members of the public and other stakeholders.

The AIWAP initiative and the rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme are part of Governor Alex Otti’s efforts to restore potable water supply for domestic and industrial use in Aba, Umuahia, and other parts of the state.

He urged all invited guests, stakeholders and residents to take note of the new date and remain assured of the States commitment to delivering on its promise of sustainable water supply and improved sanitation across Abia State.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has pledged to deliver durable infrastructure that would stand the test of time, assuring the Aba Union that all ongoing and future road projects will be built to serve generations to come.

Governor Otti stated this on Sunday, when addressed members of the Aba Union; the apex socio-cultural leadership body of the nine Local Government Areas of the Old Aba Division, at the Aba residence of Elder Statesman and the State’s first Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Theo Nkire.

The Governor revealed that the reconstruction of Ohanku Road is being executed using rigid pavement technology to ensure it lasts for over 50 years.

“The work on Ohanku Road is progressing steadily. We are deploying rigid pavement technology to make sure this road will not just serve us now but will still be here in the next fifty years”, he stated.

Governor Otti further assured the gathering that other major roads, including Obohia, Uratta and Old Express roads, would receive similar attention under his administration.

The Governor also disclosed that the country home of one of Ngwa land’s foremost leader, the late Chief Jaja Nwachukwu, is currently undergoing extensive renovation and retrofitting, including the access road, ahead of a posthumous birthday celebration his administration is organising in his honour on 1 January 2026.

He attributed his administration’s “modest achievements” to God’s grace and enablement, adding that his emergence as Governor in 2023 was ordained by God.

“Power belongs to God. My becoming Governor was by His grace, and whatever we have achieved so far is through His love and enablement”, he said.

Governor Otti who expressed delight at the Stakeholders’ satisfaction with his leadership, described Chief Theo Nkire as “a father and a friend”, and stressed the importance of enduring peace and security in Abia State.

He declared that his administration would not condone any act of political irresponsibility from any quarter that could disrupt the prevailing peace and security in the State.

In their separate remarks, Senator Representing Abia South Senatorial a District, Sen. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has vowed that his administration will maintain its momentum in delivering modern road infrastructure and quality healthcare across the State.

Governor Otti made the vow on Tuesday, while speaking at Ibeku High School field, shortly after commissioning several projects executed by his administration across the three Local Government Areas in Abia Central Senatorial Zone.

The projects include; Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) retrofitted at Owerinta Isialangwa South, Amibo Umuahia South and Ekeoba Umuahia North under Project Ekwueme and 8.3 kilometres Isieketa -Obikabia road, Isialangwa South and 1.5 IBB Way Umuahia North.

The Governor emphasized that ongoing projects across the State are designed to directly impact the lives of ordinary Abians.

He revealed that the Healthcare centres being renovated across the State are not mere facelifts but fully equipped facilities capable of handling most of the basic health needs of the populace.

“We have 200 Primary Health Care cientres that have either been retrofitted or are in the final stages of being fixed, and they are not just being fixed as an empty shell.

“As we fix them, we equip them with the latest equipment so that you can walk into a primary health care centre and get attended to properly”, he said.

Governor Otti noted that with 80 percent of health cases treatable at the Primary Health Care level, the State’s healthcare strategy is to reduce the burden on General Hospitals or Tertiary Health Care centers.

“It means that it is only about 20 percent that will be referred to either the General Hospitals or the Tertiary Health Care Centers. So we want you to be comfortable in your domain”, he emphasized.

The Governor disclosed plans to retrofit a total of 948 Primary Health Care Centers across the state in phases, with the first batch of 200 completed, adding that renovation works are ongoing at the 22 General Hospitals across the State.

He pointed out that the Abia State University Teaching Hospital has reclaimed its accreditation following the first phase of retrofitting, with work now underway to upgrade it into a fully functional tertiary medical facility.

Governor Otti used the occasion to announce the immediate rehabilitation of the Ikot Ekpene Road, a key route linking the newly commissioned IBB Road, despite its Federal status.

“We are aware that it’s a Federal Road, but like we have always said, the Federal Government does not use any road. So whether it is Federal or State, it is Abia people that use it and we are going to fix it”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor reminded residents of their role in securing government assets against vandalism and appealed to citizens to fulfil their tax obligations, stressing that the execution of such capital-intensive projects requires adequate funding.

“There is no security better than the security you provide. And anytime anybody wants to vandalise public properties, report them to the appropriate authorities. And we can assure you we will deal with them”, he said.

In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, and the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, commended Governor Otti for his bold initiative in retrofitting Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the State to world-class standards and constructing access roads in line with his administration’s infrastructural development agenda.

They also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the public facilities and urged beneficiaries to take responsibility for their protection and maintenance.

In an interview, of the General Manager, Abia State Debt Management Office and Coordinator of the Abia Central Project Ekwueme, Dr. Kingsley Nwaigburu disclosed that the Governor approved the retrofitting of 64 PHCs in Abia Central Senatorial Zone alone.

Dr. Nwaigburu further explained that the initiative has ensured that every ward in the state is now equipped with a functional Primary Healthcare Centre capable of providing essential health services to residents at the grassroots level.

Also speaking. the Traditional Ruler of Ekeoba Kingdom, Ohuhu, Eze Ambassador Iheanyichukwu Nwokenna, described the retrofitting of PHCs under Governor Otti’s leadership as a “new dawn” for the State.

He commended the Governor’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy in Abia’s development history, noting that the renovation of the Ekeoba Primary Health Centre had given his community a renewed sense of belonging, adding that no previous administration had taken such a bold and impactful step.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Otti, said that following the directives by the Governor, the Ministry commenced full reconstruction of the road and installed solar lights in built up areas as by the Governor to enhance the roads aesthetics.

“Recall last year, Your Excellency, you gave us an order when this road was impassible, near Okpuala Ngwa, you gave us an order to move in and repair this road.

“Today, I am very glad to let you know today that we have completed that exercise”, the Works Commissioner said.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony held on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College, Aba, Governor Otti noted that the commissioning of chains of interconnected routes, speak to God administrations urban renewal agenda and commitment to the holistic restoration of the Aba Urban Corridor.

Governor Otti highlighted that the stretches of roads within Aba have been fixed to “generally improve the business environment, elevate urban experience, and add to the appeal of the communities around here”.

“Roads do not just create paths to new opportunities, they restore ancient landmarks. I am glad that you have come out in your numbers to be witnesses to the evolution of Aba as a strategic commercial and industrial destination”, he stated.

The Commissioner explained that the roads were built using approved materials and executed under the direct labour initiative of the State Ministry of Works.

He commended Governor Otti’s commitment to responsive leadership, highlighting that the projects completed within six months were hitherto in deplorable conditions and prone to flooding, now offer safer, healthier, and more business-friendly access routes.

In his address, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Aba, Most Rev. Prof. Augustine Echema, represented by the Diocesan Education Secretary, Rev. Fr. Vincent Ogugua described the reconstructed roads as vital channels of opportunity and security for the populace.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area, Mr. Obialor Anyanwu, said the improved infrastructure has transformed Aba’s economy from a six-hour to a 16-hour business cycle, with prospects of becoming a 24-hour economy.

He lauded the State Government’s efforts in enhancing the ease of doing business and called on residents to support these gains by paying taxes and ensuring security.

Also, the Director General of GADA, Mr. Uche Ukeje, also noted that the new roads would improve traffic flow and the efficient movement of goods and services, adding that the construction adhered strictly to technical standards to ensure durability and flood resistance.

A representative of traders on Tenant and Market Roads, Mr. Ernest Onwuka, thanked the government for alleviating the long-standing hardship traders faced due to poor road conditions, noting that the improved roads would boost commercial activity and enhance the overall business environment.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem, has reassured traders at the Ekeoha Shopping Center Aba, that the current administration of Governor Alex Otti has not approved any further demolitions at the market.

Chief Inem gave the assurance on Wednesday, while addressing traders at the market after inspecting the Phase 1 site of the ongoing reconstruction at the market.

The Governor’s Aide who also serves as the Chairman, Ekeoha Remodeling Committee, emphasized that the Governor’s primary concern is the comfort and convenience of traders during the reconstruction process.

“I want to categorically state to you that the Governor has not approved any further demolition.

“It is the position of this government that before any other phase of demolition will start, this one (Phase 1) will be completed and people will start trading in it. That is the message from Dr. Alex Otti.

“The primary interest of His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti is comfort”, he said.

Chief Inem explained that the government understands the hardship traders are undergoing due to the ongoing project and is putting pressure on contractors to deliver the first phase as soon as possible.

“The Government of Dr. Alex Otti is determined that this place must be delivered timely because we know that people are going through a lot of inconvenience.

“We put too much pressure on the people handling the job, both the concessioner, the contractor, sub or major, to make sure that this section of the project is delivered because when it is delivered, it reduces the pressure on everybody, both on the traders and on the government”, Chief Inem explained.

He clarified that the Remodeling Committee had planned a town hall meeting to engage with traders and provide updates on the project, but that meeting was rescheduled due to a letter from the market leadership requesting an audience with the Governor.

“We got a letter from your leaders and His Excellency said that before you do that meeting, let those people that signed that letter and maybe some others come and see the government on Monday with the Chief of Staff presiding”, he explained.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Hon Kingsley Nwokocha reassured traders of the Governor’s commitment to completing the shops on schedule.

“We are here to reassure every trader in this market that His Excellency stands with you and that he wants these shops to be completed on time, so that each and every one of the traders will move into their new shops”, he said.

Hon Nwokocha appealed to traders not to accept any misleading claims from people spreading false information, assuring them that no shops would be demolished until the current project is completed.

He reminded the traders of the administration’s support for continuity in market leadership during the project and revealed that he personally appealed to the Governor to retain the current executives to ensure stability.

In his remarks, the Chairman, Ekeoha Shopping Center, Mr Emeka Okeke expressed gratitude to the government representatives for personally visiting the market to dispel the ongoing rumors.

Mr. Okeke also appreciated the government’s directive to halt any further demolitions until the completion of the first phase, reaffirming the traders’ continued support for the present administration and urged all traders to remain united in the interest of progress.
