Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has officially declared the 2026 medical mission of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) open, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare as a driver of economic growth and social wellbeing.

The 2026 medical mission organised by ANPA, in collaboration with the Abia State Government focuses on expanding access to free, quality healthcare as well as strengthening the state’s health system through partnerships and capacity building.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony on Tuesday at the Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasized that his administration’s development agenda is anchored on improving the welfare of the people through deliberate investments in critical sectors, particularly healthcare.

The Governor reiterated that his administration does not separate healthcare from economic advancement, explaining that sustained investment in the sector is essential for productivity and long-term prosperity.

He stressed that infrastructure development must translate into real benefits for citizens, noting that “physical infrastructure projects, whatever the cost, mean nothing if they are not directly connected to our central governance agenda“.

“At the center of our development framework is the holistic welfare of the human population. Everything we have done in the last 35 months, is driven primarily by the hunger to enhance the social and economic experiences of our people.

“We do not make a distinction between health of the people and the prosperity of the economy, for they are one and the same thing.

“Health, as we see it, is also economics because it is tied to the productivity of the population, guides investment decisions, and ultimately promotes long-term household and public sector services”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor commended ANPA for returning to Abia for another round of medical outreach, describing the organisation as a dependable partner in the state’s healthcare transformation efforts.

He expressed confidence that the medical mission would not only provide immediate medical relief to residents but also strengthen the capacity of local health workers through knowledge transfer and exposure to global best practices.

Governor Otti also disclosed that his administration has approved the recruitment of 851 healthcare professionals, with 629 already deployed to various facilities, as part of efforts to address manpower shortages and improve service delivery.

He also revealed plans to institutionalize collaboration with ANPA through a structured framework that would incorporate telemedicine and digital healthcare solutions.

Governor Otti further highlighted improvements in infrastructure, security and environmental services and positioned Abia as an emerging destination for investment in health and other sectors.

He expressed optimism that the medical outreach would have a lasting impact on beneficiaries, noting that participants would depart with heartwarming stories of lives saved, joy restored and renewed faith in humanity.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, said the medical mission aligns with the healthcare reforms of Governor Otti, which include increased funding, infrastructure upgrades and digital health innovations.

Prof Uche noted that the reforms by Governor Otti has significantly improved healthcare utilisation, with a rise in hospital visits across the state in recent years.

He added that the medical outreach would provide free consultations, specialised surgeries and health education, as well as servep as a platform for collaboration, capacity building and strengthening of the state’s healthcare system.

Also speaking, President of ANPA, Dr Cliff Eke, described the initiative as part of diaspora-driven health intervention aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Dr Eke explained that the mission goes beyond medical outreach to include skills transfer, training and long-term system support, adding that the team has assembled a multidisciplinary group of professionals to deliver services across key areas of medicine.

He further disclosed that the programme is part of the National Diaspora Health Impact Initiative, which will be implemented across several states before a national review, noting that telemedicine and continuous engagement with local health workers are central to ensuring sustainability.

In her remarks earlier, the Chairperson of the Medical Mission Committee, Dr Uloaku Ukaegbu, noted that the partnership between the Abia State Government and ANPA has continued to yield significant results, revealing that similar missions in the previous year treated over 15,000 residents and recorded more than 300 surgeries.

According to her, the current exercise has already commenced at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Aba General Hospital, and currently providing eye care, outpatient services and specialised surgeries, while also incorporating a sexual and reproductive health programme for youths.

The Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Mr Carlos Rojas-Arbulu has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties with Nigeria, identifying Abia State as a strategic partner for mutual beneficial collaboration.

Mr Rojas-Arbulu made this known on Wednesday, during a meeting with Governor Alex Otti at Nvosi in Isialangwa South Local Government Area, where he engaged the Governor and key stakeholders on areas of shared commercial interest between Canada and Abia state.

The Deputy High Commissioner, represented by Canada’s Trade Commissioner and Second Secretary, Mrs Delane Boakye, identified Aviation, Energy particularly Clean Energy and Education as priority areas for collaboration.

Mrs Boakye, noted that in Education, Nigeria remains the second-largest source of international students to Canada, adding that Canada is home to over 17,000 Nigerian students.

She also highlighted Canada’s global expertise in aircraft development and training as well as its strong Agricultural base as priority areas for collaboration.

Describing Nigerians as “very dynamic, hard-working individuals with a strong entrepreneurial spirit”, the Canadian Trade Commissioner emphasised that her core mandate is to promote investment opportunities in Nigeria and foster closer bilateral cooperation.

“Part of my mandate and my role is to really shine the light on the opportunities that exist here, on the richness of the culture and the people and build those ties between our countries. 

“I’m here in Abia, like I said, on behalf of the Deputy High Commissioner, Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, who some of you may have had the opportunity to meet.

“We see synergies in areas like aviation, where Canada is a world leader in Aircraft development and training, in Agriculture, with our rich natural resources and agricultural products through the prairies, in Energy and Clean Energy. 

“Looking forward to expand into areas of workforce development and mutual collaboration to be a part of”, she said.

Responding, Governor Otti who thanked the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner for choosing Abia State as the first state to visit, highlighted the State’s strength in human capital, describing it as its most valuable asset.

Governor Otti further described Aba, the commercial hub of the State as both a major trading centre and an emerging industrial base.

“We have a whole lot to offer in Abia in terms of human capital and that’s the most important resource, if you ask me. Our people are industrious. Many of them are well-educated.

“Aba is not just a trading post, it is also an industrial post. So you see a lot of manufacturing. You see light industries”, he said.

Governor Otti assured that the State is ready for collaboration particularly in renewable energy, Aviation, Agriculture, Education, as part of efforts to accelerate economic growth and industrial development.

The Governor also expressed interest in partnering with Canada in the Aviation sector, particularly with aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.

He revealed that the State is constructing an international-standard airport in partnership with the Federal Government, with the runway already completed.

On energy, Governor Otti reaffirmed the state’s readiness for partnerships, particularly in energy development, noting that the necessary legal and regulatory frameworks are already in place.

He assured the delegation of the State’s willingness to deepen engagements through relevant Ministries and Agencies and expressed optimism on building stronger ties between Abia State and Canada.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has commended Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for prioritising Education and Human Capital Development, describing the State’s reforms as a strong foundation for improving learning outcomes.

The UNESCO Head of Office and Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr. Jean‑Paul Ngome‑Abiaga, gave the commendation during a visit by a UNESCO delegation to the Governor at Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Ngome-Abiaga, further commended Governor Otti for the progress made in Abia State since 2023, particularly in infrastructure development, fiscal discipline and Education.

The UNESCO Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS noted that the reforms introduced by the Otti led administration since assumption of office were already yielding visible results.

He particularly lauded the State Government for allocating 20 per cent of its budget to the Education Sector and disclosed that UNESCO has been working closely with the State Government and its institutions, especially in the area of Health Education.

According to him, the collaboration has resulted in the training of more than 1,000 teachers on Health Education, engagement of over 700 community and religious leaders on HIV and health awareness and involvement of more than 300 schools under the Abia First Education Programme.

“And all this started when you launched the Abia First Education Program. So we would like to thank you for that and we would like to continue to support you in that very important agenda”, he said.

Ngome-Abiaga urged the State Government to further deepen collaboration with UNESCO, increase budgetary provision for Health Education and expand partnership in areas within the organisation’s mandate.

He added that UNESCO is ready to provide technical expertise and institutional support to the Abia State Government in designing and implementing programmes in Education, Health Education and other areas within its mandate.

“We are here in this country because our mandate is focusing on Education, the Science, Culture, Communication and Information and we are here for you.

“We are here to assist you, to support your work and we would like you to know that we are available any time you need such a support.

“We would like to continue together and to support you. We will put all our technical expertise to your disposal in any area you need it”, he assured.

Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, highlighted the Africa Social Impact Summit, a platform convened with the United Nations system in Nigeria to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

She said the summit, launched in 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic, was designed to promote multi-sector partnerships among government, private sector and development organisations and has already helped unlock more than 100 million dollars in development financing.

Ibekwe also spoke about the Business Coalition for Education, launched in partnership with the Office of the Vice President to address the challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria through private sector participation.

She invited Governor Otti to participate in the summit scheduled for July 22–23 at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos and urged Abia State to join as a pioneer public sector partner in the coalition.

Responding, Governor Otti thanked the delegation for the visit and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with UNESCO and other development partners.

“What you came with, a request that no one can say no to; Partnership, support to reduce the number of out-of-school children, asking that more money be allocated to Health Education.

“Those are good and they are imperative for a government that is serious”, the Governor said.

He explained that the Abia State Government currently devotes 20 per cent of its budget to education and 15 per cent to health.

Governor Otti recounted how his administration introduced free and compulsory education after discovering that school fees were a major factor keeping children out of school.

The Governor said that the policy led to a surge in school enrolment, prompting the government to recruit thousands of teachers and embark on massive school reconstruction, introduction of Smart Schools, Curriculum standardization and improved security for school facilities.

He assured the delegation that Abia State would continue to work closely with UNESCO and other partners to strengthen the Education Sector and reduce the number of out-of-school children.

Abia State Government has commenced a pilot Digital Healthcare Programme in select hospitals as part of efforts to migrate from manual to technology-driven medical services across the State.

Governor Otti who disclosed this on Friday night during the February edition of his monthly media interaction with Journalists tagged, “Governor Otti Speaks“, said that the ongoing digital transition in the state is already delivering measurable and positive results.

“In terms of digital health care programmes, we have started a pilot programme in select hospitals. The whole idea is to migrate from manual to digital. It is looking quite good. Our people are happy”, the Governor said.

He recalled that upon assumption of office, his administration declared a state of emergency in critical sectors including Health, Environmental Sanitation and Infrastructure, noting that significant progress had been recorded in the sectors.

Governor Otti revealed that the phase one of the Project Ekwueme Primary Healthcare intervention programme is coming to a close with 200 Primary Health Care Centres retrofitted, rebuilt and remodelled across the State.

“All the 200 primary health care centres are now in place and are retrofitted, rebuilt or remodelled. Some of them have not been functionalised because we insist on minimum standards in terms of equipment and in terms of health care professionals.

“We have given the directive that in the next four to six weeks all of them should be functionalised”, he stated.

The Governor added that recruitment of Healthcare personnel is ongoing to ensure adequate staffing, while the State is also implementing the World Bank-supported IMPACT project.

According to him, 77 additional Primary Healthcare Centres have been rehabilitated under the World Bank scheme, bringing the total to over 270 healthcare facilities once fully operational.

Governor Otti disclosed that the State has engaged Quantus Medical Foundation, a United States-based firm, to train healthcare professionals in line with global best practices.

“We know a lot of them are highly qualified. But then, just like every other thing, the information age makes it compulsory that things continue to change. So we want our people to be updated”, he said.

The Governor revealed that the newly flagged-off General Hospital in Ukwa East Local Government Area; the first secondary healthcare facility in the council since its creation, will serve as a referral centre for Primary Healthcare facilities across the area and strengthen access to quality medical services for residents.

He noted that work is also ongoing in several Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, as well as specialist hospitals in Amachara and Umunnato.

On infrastructure, Governor Otti said his administration has intensified work across 31 road projects under the Ministry of Works, in addition to projects handled by the Greater Aba Development Agency and the Greater Ohafia Development Agency.

The Governor revealed that approval has been granted for the establishment of an SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba to support small businesses, particularly in the technology and phone repair value chain, adding that land has already been acquired for the project.

On workers’ welfare, Governor Otti said that payment of leave allowances had commenced and that his administration was addressing outstanding entitlements owed to former elected councillors between 1999 and 2022.

He also confirmed that the State Government has reacquired the moribund Afro Beverages Company from AMCON and is receiving expressions of interest from prospective investors with similar interest shown in the revival of Star Paper Mill.

“So the whole idea for government is to ensure that those companies go back to work and ensure that our people, who hitherto were employed in those places, even if it is not all of them, but others to get jobs in those places.

“It is not our preference to run those companies. We want to cede them to the private sector, not just somebody who has money, but we want to be sure that those companies do not run aground anymore”, he stated.

On the Nsulu Airport project, the Governor said compensation payments to affected landowners has resumed, with over 4,000 out of 10,000 claimants already paid.

“I understand there are close to 10,000 claimants, and at the moment over 4,000 have been paid. So we are taking them step by step. 

“We first of all took the people we acquired the proposed runway, which is what is going on now. The construction of the runway is going on very well. So we first of all settled them, and we are now taking them village by village. 

“In the spirit of transparency, we had made the Honorable Commissioner for Land to publish the names of claimants to the communities, so there’s nothing that is hidden. Of course, we are not ruling out sharp practices, but we are also very, very ready to deal with anyone that we see.

“I can assure you that everyone who should be compensated will be compensated. Work is going on uninterrupted at the Nsulu Airport project”, he affirmed.

Governor Otti further disclosed that reconstruction of the Enyimba International Hotel, to be managed by Radisson Blu, had commenced, with a total of 250 rooms and an international convention centre planned upon completion.

In the Education sector, the Governor announced progress in the recruitment of 4,000 teachers, revealing that 36,000 applications were received, with 24,000 shortlisted for computer-based tests.

On power, he said efforts were underway to restore electricity to Ohafia and Ukwa East LGAs adding that the State is working towards acquiring a 60% majority stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to facilitate improved supply.

Addressing security concerns, the Governor maintained that no part of Abia State was under the control of non-state actors and assured residents of security of lives and properties.

“We will continue to do everything that we need to do to ensure that all of you can sleep with your two eyes closed, and I’m happy that results are positive. 

“There is no territory that is under the control of non-state actors in Abia State, and there will never be. We have put everything to security. We have professionals who are also supporting us.

“We set up the Security Trust Fund, we set up the Security Advisory Committee, and they are working very hard together with the security agencies, the police, the DSS, Nigerian Army, Navy.

“Everybody is working together to ensure that this place remains safe. And the logic is simple. If this place is not safe, everything we are doing will come to naught”, he declared.

The Abia State Government has announced plans to launch locally made products by Abia-based entrepreneurs into the United States market by 2026, as part of efforts to expand exports, promote local content and grow the State’s economy.

The initiative, which will be driven through the Abia State Diaspora Commission, is expected to open international markets for Abia-made food products, textiles, leather goods and other locally produced items.

Chairman of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, Mr Okey Agbara, disclosed this on Monday after a strategic meeting with Abia entrepreneurs at the Government House, Umuahia.

Mr Agbara said the State is determined to reverse the long-standing practice where products manufactured in Aba and other parts of Abia are sold cheaply to middlemen in Ghana, who then repackage and export them to global markets, including the United States, under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

“In the past, Ghana has been the gateway for AGOA. They come to Nigeria, buy our products and sell them to the rest of the world, including the United States.

“Today, I have learnt that our people sell for almost nothing to Ghana, while Ghana benefits from the hard work of our people in Aba. That has to stop”, he said.

Mr Agbara revealed that the State Government has commenced engagements with AGOA and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to train local entrepreneurs on packaging, quality control and compliance with international standards required for export to the United States and other markets.

He further disclosed that discussions has reached an advanced stage for Aba to host an AGOA hub, which would serve as a West African export centre.

“We have negotiated with AGOA and they have agreed to create a hub here in Aba as a West African hub, instead of Ghana, because this is where the products are coming from “, he said.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Alex Otti to create new economic opportunities and revive local industries across the State.

The Disapora Chairman also commended the Governor for creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, noting that the establishment of the Abia State Diaspora Commission led to the creation of the Abia State Global Chamber of Commerce to connect Abia entrepreneurs to markets around the world.

“Today, we have gathered businesses from Abia to brief them on what is coming in 2026. The Abia State Global Chamber of Commerce will handle matchmaking and business connections in the United States so that our people know that we are serious and ready”, he added.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Abia State Global Chamber of Commerce, Engr James Umekwe, said the Commission was committed to promoting Abia’s local content and facilitating access to the U.S. market for entrepreneurs.

Engr. Umekwe explained that AGOA, a United States trade law enacted under former President Bill Clinton and renewed by successive administrations, allows eligible African countries to export goods to the U.S. market duty-free.

“The most important part of AGOA is that products made in African countries can enter the U.S. market without tariffs.

“This means promoting your products, expanding your market and creating opportunities for growth. We want to ensure that entrepreneurs in textiles, clothing, leather, agriculture and other sectors can take advantage of this opportunity”, Engr Umekwe said.

He thanked Governor Otti for his consistent support and for backing initiatives aimed at positioning Abia as a major export hub in Nigeria.

An Aba-based entrepreneur and founder of Proud of Abia Production, Mr Amaobi Nwanagu, described the initiative as a major boost for local businesses, particularly those focused on local content.

Mr Nwangwu, who is also a member of the first cohort of the Aba Export Growth Lab, said the programme was preparing entrepreneurs for global competitiveness.

“This meeting is part of our packaging and export readiness. We are being prepared to take on the world.

“We have the capacity, the entrepreneurs, the manpower, the creativity and the knowledge. What we need is the right packaging and support, which we are now receiving under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti”, he said.

Some packaged food products made by Abia entrepreneurs were displayed at the meeting.

The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the Abia State Diaspora Commission, has commenced a week-long free Medical Outreach tagged “Abia State Global Medical Mission 2025″, with surgeries, consultations and specialised treatments already underway in designated centres across the State.

The outreach is taking place daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the Abia State Specialist Hospital, Aba Road Umuahia, Uzuakoli Methodist Hospital, Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, Ogbor Hill Aba, Ahiaeke Primary Health Centre and Okoko Item Health Centre, and will be concluded on Friday.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Abia State Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, after inspecting some of the outreach centres.

Prof. Uche said the initiative was part of Governor Alex Otti’s healthcare reform agenda aimed at ensuring equitable access to quality medical services for residents, regardless of their location.

“This is part of His Excellency’s roadmap to healthcare equity in Abia State, which is a trilogy of projects that have been carefully planned and implemented to ensure that people in Abia, irrespective of where they live, down to the last mile, are able to access the highest quality of healthcare.

“The idea is that His Excellency believes that taking healthcare directly to the people saves healthcare costs and ensures that high-quality healthcare is delivered to the grassroots”, he said.

According to the Commissioner, the outreach has three major components which includes, Free Medical Services, collaboration with Global Health Organisations, and Health Insurance.

He added that the programme also includes training for frontline Health Workers in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).

“In this programme, we have a training aspect, where we are training frontline healthcare workers on basic life support and advanced cardiovascular life support.

“This training is ongoing to ensure that our healthcare workers are given the right skill sets they require to save lives”, Prof. Uche explained.

He noted that the outreach, which runs simultaneously across the three senatorial zones, was designed to reduce Healthcare costs, curb quackery and improve access to quality care at the grassroots.

The Commissioner urged residents to take advantage of the free services, including Consultations, Surgeries and Health Education and warning against patronising unapproved Medical Outreaches.

Prof. Uche also lauded Governor Otti’s commitment to Healthcare delivery, noting that the Governor was recently recognised as the best-performing Governor in Primary Healthcare in the South-East and among the top six nationally.

The Chairman of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, Mr Okechukwu Agbara, in his contribution, said the Commission was pleased to partner with the State Government to deliver quality healthcare services to Abians.

“This mission is being executed. It is a success. The surgeries are being done here. There is eye surgery being done at SDA, about 150 each day.

“Abia State is becoming something that everybody is pretty much proud of”, Agbara said.

He disclosed that the outreach includes free medical consultations, health promotion talks, skills transfer, free surgeries, and both basic and advanced cardiovascular life support training.

“For us in the diaspora, it is our responsibility to facilitate this kind of development and support the efforts the Governor is making.

“Not too long ago, Abia State won the NGF award amounting to $500,000. I will do my best to make sure we make the necessary contacts for the State to receive what it deserves in terms of Diaspora Investment and Healthcare support”, he added.

Agbara commended volunteer Doctors from the Diaspora and within Nigeria, assuring that the Commission would continue to mobilise Global Partnerships to support the State’s development.

Members of the Medical Outreach team, including Dr Chimezie Nwaru, a public health expert, and an anaesthetist, Mr Goodluck Esinwoke, said a wide range of major and minor surgeries were being carried out, including myomectomy, Hernia repairs, removal of lumps and Paediatric Surgeries.

“We carry out various surgeries such as myomectomy, hernia repairs and removal of lumps,” Dr Nwaru said, adding that an average of 200 patients had been attended to daily since the commencement of the outreach.

Esinwoke disclosed that about 50 surgical cases had been listed, with several already completed, while Eye Care Services, including examinations and treatment of eye conditions, were also ongoing.

Some beneficiaries including Mrs Nnenna Chibuzor, whose son underwent a free hernia surgery, expressed gratitude to the State Government and the organisers, noting that financial constraints had delayed the procedure for over two years.

“My family and I are deeply grateful. We could not afford the surgery before now. I am glad that my son received the procedure at no cost”, she said.

Speaking during a meeting with the Consul General of the Kingdom of Denmark in Lagos, Miss Jette Bjerrum, at the Micheal Okpara, Umuahia, on Tuesday, Governor Otti said the State Government was ready to partner Denmark.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the proposals presented by the Consul General, noting that many of them aligned with ongoing reforms in the State.

“Some of the things you said are exactly what we are doing. For us, it is either we are doing something or we are not doing it. We don’t waste “, he said.

Governor Otti assured that his administration does not indulge in “analysis paralysis”, adding that preliminary work on the agreed areas of partnership would begin immediately.

The Governor also accepted the proposal for a follow-up workshop to be held in the first month of the new year to crystallise the implementation framework.

On digital transformation, the Governor highlighted the State’s investment in building a data-driven governance structure, particularly in Agriculture.

He explained that Abia now has comprehensive records of farmers, farm locations and needs, giving the government clearer insights for planning and decision-making.

He added that the Commissioner for Science and Technology and the Special Adviser on Agriculture, both returnees from abroad, were driving reforms in their respective sectors.

On Health and Education, Governor Otti disclosed that his administration had consistently allocated 35 per cent of the State’s annual budget to both sectors, with 15 per cent dedicated to health and 20 per cent to education.

He added that the Government had introduced free and compulsory basic Education across the State and was upgrading infrastructure in schools and 200 primary healthcare centres.

“Our focus is on service, not profit and we create value for our people first before expecting revenue from them,” he said.

The Governor cited the steady progress in achieving 24-hour electricity supply in Aba through an independent power project, describing it as the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He encouraged the Danish delegation to visit Aba to appreciate the creativity of Local artisans and the vibrancy of MSMEs, which he described as the lifeblood of the city.

Governor Otti further expressed readiness to involve Denmark in the State’s Seaport Project, noting that the identified location would require dredging of about 19.5 nautical miles.

He commended Denmark’s development model and reaffirmed Abia’s commitment to building strong subnational institutions capable of contributing meaningfully to National growth and also expressed interest in meeting the Danish Ambassador during future engagements.

She emphasised digital transformation as another critical pillar, stating that Denmark sought to support data-driven solutions that enhance efficiency across public, private and civic sectors.

The Governor highlighted Abia’s key competitive advantages, citing the availability of a skilled labour force, the emergence of more reliable energy supply in strategic parts of the State, as well as the strengthened security architecture and improvements in road infrastructure under his administration.

He maintained that these factors position Abia State as an attractive destination capable of hosting large-scale, sustainable investments.

Governor Otti who also highlighted the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) in Ukwa LGA, explained that the project which sits on 2,000 hectares of land is designed as a major industrial cluster built to support manufacturing and energy-driven enterprises that offers investors an opportunity to tap into the region’s oil and gas potential.

He reaffirmed the State’s readiness for foreign partnerships, adding that his administration’s “investments in economic infrastructure are designed to create wealth, activate new front lines of opportunities, and put demand access to productive use”.

In his speech, the Commercial Councilor of the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria, Fatih Tonzogho, said Turkey is committed to strengthening global partnerships adding that the country’s engagement with Africa has been a deliberate and consistent state policy since its launch by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2003.

Tonzogho described Africa with over 1.5 billion people and a GDP exceeding 3.5 trillion USD as a continent for the future of global economic growth.

He called for sustained collaboration with Abia and expressed hope that the Abia–Turkiye summit would be a regular platform for expanding trade, assuring of Turkey’s continued participation in future editions.

The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Dr Mrs Salome Obiukwu, in her remarks described the Abia–Turkiye Investment Summit as a strategic move to deepen economic cooperation and attract global partnerships.

The Abia State Diaspora Commission has opened discussions with the Embassy of Mexico on areas of collaboration aimed at promoting orderly migration, educational exchange, and skills development for Abians.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Rev. Amb. Annie Onu, who led a delegation of senior officials on a courtesy visit to the Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda, at the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, emphasised the need for proper guidance and documentation for citizens pursuing opportunities abroad.

She explained that the Commission is poised to protect Abians in the diaspora and to strengthen relationships with host countries.

The Abia Diaspora Commission boss, noted that the administration of Governor Alex Otti remains committed to supporting and safeguarding the welfare of Abians abroad and ensuring that students and professionals represent the state positively in their host countries.

“We want to ensure that our citizens who travel abroad do so with the right documentation and guidance.

“Our office is there to create awareness, mentor, and project the good image of our state. This is about service and building cordial relationships that foster investment, cultural exchange, and educational opportunities”, Rev. Onu said.

Responding, Ambassador Alfredo Miranda stressed that Mexico places a high priority on regulated migration and respect for human rights.

The Mexican Ambassador revealed that about 4,500 Nigerians currently reside in Mexico, mostly students and professionals and outlined the requirements for student and tourist visas.

“For us, what is most important is to maintain an orderly and regulated migration process. We want to avoid situations that create problems, hence the need for proper guidance before people travel”, he explained.

Rev Onu, who led a delegation of senior officials from the Commission on a familiarization visit to the German Embassy in Abuja, explained that the visit was part of ongoing engagements with foreign missions aimed at projecting the image of a “New Abia” under Governor Otti’s leadership.

She added that the initiative seeks to ensure Abia citizens abroad remain law-abiding, receive proper guidance and representation, as well as continue to contribute positively to both Nigeria and their host countries.

“The primary purpose of this familiarization visit is to explore opportunities for collaboration with you.

“We have a large number of Abians living in Germany and in the event of any challenges they may encounter, you can reach my office directly. This will enable us to ensure they comply with German policies and receive the necessary support.

“The present administration, under the capable leadership of Governor Alex Otti is firmly committed to good governance and the welfare of Abians across the globe.

“The Governor is a firm believer in good governance and for that reason, he is determined to ensure that sons and daughters of Abia origin is well cared for wherever they reside. 

“He also encourages them to contribute meaningfully to the development of their host countries, just as they do for Nigeria. This creates a healthy synergy to ensure that everything works smoothly”, she said.

The Executive Secretary explained that the Commission has begun developing a comprehensive database of Abians in the diaspora aimed at fostering stronger connections and sustained engagement with citizens living abroad.

She further assured that the Commission would provide guidance to potential travellers to avoid fraudulent practices and documentation issues.

The Abia Diaspora Commission boss, emphasised her commitment to safeguarding the image of the State and ensuring that genuine sons and daughters of Abia receive the support they deserve.

She advised Abians seeking visas to approach the Commission for guidance, noting that the office would assist in verifying documents and confirming genuine contacts abroad to prevent them from becoming stranded or vulnerable.

Responding, the Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nigeria, Mr Johannes Lehne, while welcoming the team, noted that the German Embassy was open to collaboration especially in combating fraudulent practices associated with visa applications.

He revealed that the Embassy occasionally receives falsified requests purportedly from Ministries and Government Agencies in Nigeria and stressed that the Abia Diaspora Commission could play a vital role in verifying genuine requests from the State.

“We believe there are individuals within Ministries and Government Agencies who exploit the system for personal gain. They claim, to arrange a visa to Germany for people and exploit them, after which they draft a note, compile a list, and forward it to the embassy.

“This is where your support would be invaluable. Any assistance you can provide in this regard would be greatly appreciated”, Mr Lehne stated.

He further advised that visa applicants should always plan ahead at least ten days in advance to avoid unnecessary rejections.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has lauded Abia State as the first in the Federation to establish a functioning Diaspora Commission.

The Chairman of NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, gave the commendation during a debriefing session at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where senior officials of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, led by the Executive Secretary/CEO Amb Rev. Annie Onu, were formally received and briefed on their expected responsibilities.

The NIDCOM Chairman, represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Engr. Dr. Sule Bassi, also commended Governor Alex Otti for the transformation unfolding across Abia State, noting that his administration’s bold reforms are repositioning the State for sustainable growth and development.

Engr. Bassi explained that the meeting was standard procedure for NIDCOM to debrief all newly appointed State Diaspora Focal Point Officers of the commissions to align them with the National Diaspora engagement framework.

He outlined NIDCOM’s expectations of the Abia Diaspora Commission and emphasized the need for structured engagement with Diaspora community, data collection and alignment with the Commission’s mandate among others.

He urged the Abia delegation to develop a dedicated website and social media platforms to amplify its work and maintain visibility among the global Abia Diaspora community.

Engr. Bassi who also encouraged the Abia team to fully participate in all major events on Nigeria’s Diaspora calendar, urged State Government’s to provide logistic support for NIDCOM’s participation in state-led activities.

“Diaspora engagement is not just about remittances, it is about knowledge, service, identity and nation-building.

“Engage Abians in Diaspora to key into and participate in the development of the state through investment, volunteerism or charitable cause.

“I urge you to liase with NiDCOM to harness the resources, talents and skills of Nigerians in diaspora towers the overall socio-economic, cultural and political development of Nigeria in general and Abia State in particular”, he said.

According to Amb. Onu, the Commission is also preparing to host the Abia Diaspora Business Summit, which is expected to strengthen connections within the global Abia network in terms of investment and development opportunities in the State.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has pledged stronger collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to tackle human trafficking, illegal migration and to harness the potential of Abians in the diaspora for sustainable development.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Tuesday, in his office, at Isialangwa South LGA, during a visit by the newly appointed IOM Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche.

The Governor, who announced immediate steps to facilitate the partnership, revealed that immediate provisions would be made for the IOM operational office in Abia.

While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to eradicating human trafficking and related crimes, Governor Otti stressed that his government maintains zero tolerance for all forms of criminal activity.

“We are very focused on ensuring that all forms of crime and criminality are wiped away from this state. And human trafficking is one of them.

“We have zero tolerance for any kind of criminal activity at all. Those who have decided that those are the kind of things they will engage in, have found that this place is not comfortable for them”, he emphasized.

On Diaspora Engagement, Governor Otti underscored the significance of diaspora remittances, which he noted amount to over $20 billion annually and play a vital role in supporting education, healthcare, and economic stability.

The Governor disclosed plans to collaborate with relevant Ministries to provide reintegration support for returnees, noting that many who wish to come back are often discouraged by uncertainty about where to begin their lives.

“Some of them may want to return, but they are afraid of where to even start from. If there are organised systems to receive them, I am confident it will encourage their return. The initiative is a form of reverse migration”, Gov Otti explained.

He urged the IOM to collaborate with the State’s Diaspora Commission, which regularly convenes stakeholders across America, Europe, Southeast Asia and beyond, in their annual December homecoming.

In her remarks, the International Organisation for Migration Chief of Mission Sharon Dimanche said her priority was to work closely with the state in line with government and people-centred priorities.

“I do not have any other agenda except the government agenda. Except the agenda of the people of Nigeria. I came here to serve,” she stated.

Dimanche outlined four immediate focus areas of the IOU to include combating human trafficking, harnessing diaspora potential, supporting returnees through sustainable reintegration, and improving data management for migration governance.

She commended the Abia State for pioneering Diaspora Commission as as well as addressing the challenges of human trafficking, illegal migration and pledged IOM’s technical and resource support.

“I want to see how we can consider establishing structures, mechanisms that would facilitate diaspora sending back money home and invest that in either community infrastructure initiatives.

“We are here to work, that work should start immediately”, she said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Multilateral and Donor Agencies, Mr Odinaka Eme, traced the collaboration between the State Government and the IOM to 2023 engagements that culminated in an MoU and a roadmap.

He assured that work would commence “any moment now,” with provisions already made for IOM’s operational space in Abia.

The Abia State Government (ABSG) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vega Growing Global Enterprise, reaffirming its commitment to the forthcoming Turkey-Abia International Investment Summit and Product Exhibition.

The event, scheduled to hold from 25 to 27 November 2025 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, will provide a platform for both international and local investors to explore opportunities in Abia State and take advantage of its growing reputation as a preferred investment destination.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony at Government House, Umuahia, on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Investment Promotion and Public-Private Partnership (PPP), High Chief Green-Amakwe, said the State Government would work closely with its partner, Vega Growing Global Enterprise, to deliver a successful summit.

High Chief Green-Amakwe, who also chairs the Steering Committee for the Turkey-Abia Investment Summit/Product Exhibition 2025, assured that the administration of Governor Alex Otti was fully prepared to host the summit.

The SA on Investment Promotion and PPP noted that the State Government is committed to creating a more favourable investment environment for both citizens and investors.

He recalled that the Committee was inaugurated on 4 June this year and mandated to collaborate with Turkey through Vega Growing Global Enterprise as the consultant for the summit and pointed out that the signing of the MoU marks a significant milestone in achieving the set objectives.

“Having drawn the roadmap through the MoU that has just been signed, I expect that people will put their ideas here towards invitation, towards what they think will make this event a success”, Chief Green-Amakwe stated.

Also speaking, Mr Kingsley Nwokocha, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce who is also a member of the committee, described the MoU signing as the beginning of the summit journey.

“For us, this MoU marks a significant milestone in our journey. It means clearly that we can count on your support because we have a document.

The Governor described the launch of the Aba Export Growth Lab as a critical step towards ensuring Abia’s products are competitive on the global stage.

“It was clear to us that if we do support our people in the fabrics and other things, we will be at such a competitive level that the world will begin to look.

“That is the essence of the Export Growth Lab that we get our products refined in a situation where they can compete internationally.

“We need to see Abia’s products outside the shelves of this country,” he added.

Also speaking, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms Elsie Attafuah said the agreement focuses on SMEs development, Digitalization, Energy and Industrial expansion

Ms Attafuah described the partnership as historic and commended Governor Otti for his visionary leadership.

She noted that her team had returned to Abia with a larger delegation to underscore the UNDP’s commitment to the partnership.

“Your Excellency, on behalf of UNDP, indeed the United Nations as a whole, let me say how proud we are of you for the vision that you have, for the exemplary leadership.

“Increasingly, Abia is showing the way as an epitome of the subnational that is really doing what matters, and particularly in times like this”, she stated.

Ms Attafuah highlighted that the MoU was the first landmark agreement signed by the UNDP with a Nigerian State under its Integrated Smart State of Accelerated Development framework.

She expressed optimism that the partnership would serve as a model for other States and pledged the UNDP’s continued support for Abia’s development agenda.

“So we are here for the signing of the MoU, but also secondly to support you as we launch the Aba Export Growth Lab today. I think Aba is showing us the way, and we believe Aba is going to provide the economic renaissance that Africa needs”, Ms Attafua said.

She disclosed that the UNDP had already earmarked catalytic funding for the Export Growth Lab adding that other senior UNDP officials were closely monitoring the progress in Abia.

Earlier the Chief Strategist to the Governor, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, described the agreement as the culmination of months of constructive engagement to fine-tune the framework for collaboration adding the it would serve as the framework guiding their joint commitment.

“As the Director of this district, I have led these engagements to ensure that we build a robust and practical framework for cooperation with the UNDP, fully aligned with the New Abia Agenda”, he stated.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, is set to formally commission the Aba Export Lab on 8th July 2025, as part of the State Government’s renewed drive towards export-led industrialisation and economic rejuvenation.

The Export Lab is expected to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive state-level trade policy aimed at driving sustainable growth and boosting foreign exchange earnings for the State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this on Monday, while briefing Journalists in Umuahia, said the Export Lab is a major initiative under the Growth Exports Pillar of Governor Alex Otti’s Economic Rejuvenation Agenda.

“The commissioning of this Export Growth Lab signals a strategic shift towards an export-led industrialisation drive in Abia State, with Aba at the forefront as the State’s industrial and innovation hub”, Prince Kanu stated.

He explained that the lab would serve as a platform to help local businesses identify viable international markets for their products, strengthen internal capacities, and kick-start export activities.

Prince Kanu further stated that in its initial six-month phase, about 20 carefully selected Aba-based businesses will receive export readiness training, market leads and strategies to expand into the African market.

“The primary purpose of the export growth lab is the provision of a platform for export development within the state. This lab will provide targeted interactions to help businesses identify viable international markets for products manufactured and made in Abia State, assess and strengthen their internal capabilities while initiating export activities.

“In this first phase, a number of carefully selected and qualified businesses will be chosen as pilots. The program is designed to run for six months in the first instance. 

“During this period, there will be export readiness training and sensitization for companies involved, development of tailored export strategies and roadmaps, capacity building in marketing, compliance, logistics, and operations, facilitation of lead generation and market trials, performance evaluation and impact assessment to inform future scale-ups”, the Commissioner explained.

He listed the expected outcomes to include verified market leads and initial export transactions for the participating businesses, improvements in pricing, packaging, production management, and compliance with international standards.

According to the Commissioner, the programme also aims to build the capacity of key Ministries and Agencies to design effective export support policies.

Prince Kanu listed the main products of focus as the famed Aquatic Lot, a product with protected cultural and commercial identity, safety footwear and industrial gear, and locally made apparels targeted at the African diaspora.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Industries and SMEs, Mr Mike Akpara, said the initiative would restore Aba’s reputation as the “Japan of Africa”.

“What the export lab is going to do is instil confidence into the producers. Basically they will be confident in their products and they will want to write ‘Made in Aba’ on them,” Mr Akpara said.

He emphasised that the Lab would equip producers with the skills to meet international finishing and packaging standards, and ensure their products can compete globally.

“The Government is just going to produce the enabling environment and that is exactly what the government is doing.

“Apart from providing good roads and infrastructure, this export lab is to facilitate exports so that we will be able to receive dollars in return”, Akpara stated.

He stressed that businesses would participate in the programme free of charge adding that increased exports would ultimately generate employment and more revenue for the State.

Also speaking, the Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Strategy Officer, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, said the Lab would mark a new phase in harnessing the entrepreneurial capacity of the people of Abia.

“What we may not have done is what this lab is going to help us do, to take those products from being made as crafts to industrial production, industrial quality, and quality that can be accepted anywhere in the world”, Mr MBA -Uzoukwu said.

He noted that while Abia-made products already find their way into global markets, the Export Lab would help formalise and scale the success under frameworks such as the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and World Trade Organisation rules.

“It’s a very exciting time for us. It’s very ambitious. We think the Government is rising to the challenge of supporting its people in ways that are not so obvious like infrastructure of roads and power”, Mr Mba-Uzoukwu said.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has charged the Steering Committee for the Turkey-Abia (TURAB) Investment Summit/Exhibition 2025 with developing strategic ideas that will not only ensure a successful global business event but also drive industrialization in Abia State and across the South East region.

Governor Otti gave the charge, Wednesday, during the inauguration ceremony of the 11-member steering committee at Government House, Umuahia.

The Governor, represented by the Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba urged the committee to identify viable areas of cooperation and foster strong partnerships and joint ventures between Abia, other Nigerian states, and the Turkish investment community.

He emphasized the need to leverage the growing diplomatic ties and the positive perception of Turkish businesses among Nigerians to attract targeted investments into the State.

“Reinforcing national trust is essential in positioning Abia as a preferred destination for foreign direct investment, industrialization, and commercial activities”, the Governor said.

He added that the visible transformation across all sectors of the State’s economy is a direct reflection of his administration’s visionary leadership.

Governor Otti assured the committee of his administration’s full support, noting that deliberate steps have already been taken to create an enabling environment for investment to thrive in Abia.

Responding on behalf of the Committee members, the Chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Investment Promotions and Public Private Partnership, Chief Green Amankwe, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the confidence reposed in them.

He revealed that the TURAB Investment Summit and Exhibition, scheduled to hold from November 25 to 27, 2025, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, will be hosted in partnership with Vega Growing Global Enterprises.

“The three-day Investment Summit and Exhibition aims to explore Abia’s vast investment potential and its advantages as a strategic hub for commerce within and beyond Nigeria”, Chief Amakwe stated.

He assured that the committee would work diligently to meet the Governor’s expectations.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has expressed his administration’s interest to partner with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to drive economic development in the State especially in the areas of Agriculture, Trade, and Manufacturing.

Speaking on Tuesday while receiving the Vietnamese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Bui Quoc Hung, at his Nvosi hometown, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to economic transformation.

The Governor directed the Commissioner for Industry to collaborate with the Vietnamese delegation, as they tour the State to assess investment prospects.

“This will be a good time to partner. I see a whole lot of opportunities for us to partner and we’ll be very pleased that you’ll also introduce the private sector in your country that is ready to take the risk; moving from Vietnam to this place.

“We will be very pleased to work with you to move our relationship in trade, commerce, manufacturing and agriculture to very high levels. We want to thank you for the choice of Abia”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor who noted that his administration is focused in what it intends to achieve, noted that industrial partnerships with the State by previous administrations did not yield sustainable results.

He however expressed optimism that a collaboration with Vietnam could revive ailing industries in the State.

Earlier, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Nigeria Mr Bui Quoc Hung highlighted the vast economic opportunities in the state, including Agriculture, Textiles, Crude, Oil and Gas and expressed interest in strengthening trade relations with Abia State, particularly in Agriculture, Oil and Gas gas sector among others.

The Vietnamese Ambassador to Nigeria emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to fostering a strong bilateral relationship with Abia State to enhance import and export activities and create mutual benefits for both countries.

He commended Governor Otti’s leadership and applauded his efforts in improving the economic standards of the people.

Abia State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) aimed at fostering reverse migration through Economic Development, Education and Poverty Alleviation.

The agreement, spearheaded by a delegation led by the United Nations IOM’s Chief of Mission, Ms. Paola Pace, would focus on implementation of a comprehensive roadmap to enhance diaspora engagement, attracting investments, improve educational outcomes, and support the State’s overall development agenda.

Speaking after signing the MoU, Governor Alex Otti emphasized that while the IOM is often associated with facilitating migration, Abia’s focus is on attracting people back to the State.

“I am very glad and excited to work with IOM and it is interesting sometimes when people envounter IOM their mind goes to supporting Migration, that is true but the migration that we are going to support is reverse Migration.

“We want people to come to Abia, so while we are encouraging Migration that is voluntary we also encourage the Reverse Migration”, he said.

The Governor who highlighted his administration’s efforts to create an investor-friendly environment, expressed optimism that the partnership would extend to enhancing education and healthcare, particularly through collaborations with donor agencies and development partners.

He emphasized that the key focus of his administration is Poverty Reduction hence the establishment of the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to ensure the eradication of Poverty in Abia.

“We have taken a principle stand on pulling our people out of poverty as much as possible .

“When you see that we have a Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, it is because we want as few people as possible to be in poverty.

“In fact if it is possible we don’t want to have our people living in poverty “, Governor Otti said.

The Governor reiterated his administrations commitment to partnerships that can drive job creation, reduce unemployment, and boost the state’s GDP.

“We need to create enabling environment for businesses to come and they will create jobs and increase the GDP of the State.

“This would reduce unemployment and reduce poverty”, the Governor said.

He assured the IOM delegation that the State Government would provide them necessary with an office space in Umuahia within next week to support their mission.

In his contribution, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Multilateral and Donor Agencies, Mr Odinakachi Emeh, highlighted the importance of the collaboration pointing out that it would help the State a strengthen diaspora engagement and create opportunities for people to invest in the State.

He noted that the MoU outlines initiatives to curb irregular Migration by creating an enabling environment for Abians to thrive.

“Part of what IOM is going to do for us is to help us strength diaspora engagement. What are our diasporans doing, how can they come back home, how are they goin to invest here?

“IOM is to going to help us again provide facilities and also support to employ our youths and women. Part of what they will help us to is to stop Migration.

“If people have something they are doing and there is enabling environment with infrastructure working they will not like to go out”, Mr Emeh explained.

He further disclosed that as part of the agreement, the IOM will also support the State by providing facilities and working closely with Donor Agencies to bring investments that align with the State’s development agenda.

“They will help us to partner with Donor Agencies because they are a UN body that also have sister agencies.

“So they are going to work with Donor Agencies to bring in some donors that would partner with the State to implement their policies and their developmental plans“, he said.

He described the allocation of a dedicated space for the IOM’s first office in the South East region of Nigeria as a “strong statement” in international development circles and thanked the Governor for engaging in strategic partnerships as well as creating an enabling environment for Abians to thrive.

Earlier in her speech, the leader of delegation and Chief of Mission, United Nations International Organisation for Migration, Ms Paola Pace said that the MoU signed would strengthen the diaspora engagements between Abia State Government and the IOM.

She said the UN IOM is in Abia to strengthen relationship through interaction with thematic Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as find ways of attracting donor agencies to the State.

“We also want Migration to be a choice and sensible because we see professionals in the Healthcare sector and other sectors leaving Nigeria for regions in Africa, ECOWAS and beyond.

“So that is our mandate and we also work on find solutions for people that migrate forcefully like in terms of internally displaced persons.

“We have developed this road map so tomorrow we meet with your team for a one day technical session to understand where Abia will like to go migration wise and how can we do something.

“So this MoU is really like strengthening our commitment to work with you for a more prosperous Abia.

“We are here to see how we can strengthen this cooperation and see how we can bring potential donors because we are not a donor. We are a technical partner in Nigeria but we also work with donors.

“So we will work with you to bring corporations to invest in Abia to help the people thrive and contribute to development of the State” Ms Pace assured.

The Abia State Government has received a donation of mental healthcare drugs from the Nigerian-American Institute for Mental Health (NAIMAH).

Receiving the donation at his office, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya, described mental health care as a vital aspect of healthcare that the current administration is prioritizing to enhance the well-being of citizens and society at large.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ifenyiwa Uma-Kalu, the Commissioner assured that the Ministry would partner with the Association to educate rural dwellers on Mental Health Services and provide Psycho-Education.

The Commissioner while highlighting the State Government’s commitment to the Healthcare Sector, noted that Alex Otti allocated 15% of the State’s Budget to healthcare.

He also announced ongoing renovations of 200 Primary Health Centers and five general hospitals, as well as the redesigning of the Abia State Teaching Hospital in Aba to meet world-class standards.

In his remarks, The President Nigerian-American Institute For Mental Health Limited, Dr Azubuike Aliche, represented by a Member of the Association, Justice Nwogu, emphasized the Association’s commitment to creating programs and services aimed at addressing mental illness.

He also commended Governor Otti’s dedication to improving healthcare services for all Abians.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Abians in Diaspora Commission, Mr. Allwell Agbara, represented by the Head of Administration of the Commission, Elder Chiemela Adiele-Ulelu, explained that the donation was intended to complement the state government’s efforts in the health sector and expressed gratitude to NAIMAH for their generous contribution.

The Federal Government of Nigeria notes with concern the outrageous allegations, misinformation, and defamatory statements being disseminated by Tigran Gambaryan, an American personnel of Binance who was recently tried in Nigeria for financial crimes.

While the Federal Government of Nigeria is reluctant to engage Mr. Gambaryan, due to the high-level diplomatic intervention that resolved his case, we are compelled to set the record straight to prevent his falsehoods from gaining traction.

In a Statement issued by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation,Mohammed Idris said the first visit of Mr. Gambaryan and his colleagues to Nigeria was at their own discretion, and the Government was not officially involved.

However, the Statement read that when the Government’s attention was drawn to an alleged bribery demand during that trip, an investigation was immediately launched, despite there being no formal complaint from anyone.

Mr. Gambaryan’s second visit to Nigeria was part of a wider probe into the criminal manipulation of the Nigerian currency through peer-to-peer platforms like Binance, but investigators were frustrated by the tactics deployed by Gambaryan and his team.

Mr Gambaryan was released by the Nigerian government in October 2024 on humanitarian grounds and following a high-level diplomatic intervention that ended with tangible benefits for Nigeria. The government rejected Binance’s offer of a $5 million down payment in exchange for Mr. Gambaryan’s freedom, in favour of a more beneficial settlement with the American government.

“We categorically deny the retaliatory claims made by Mr. Gambaryan against Nigerian officials involved in his case, and we urge the public to disregard these false accusations in their entirety.

“It is essential to note that Mr. Gambaryan’s allegations are not only unsubstantiated but also lack credibility, given his apparent motive to discredit and intimidate those who ensured he faced justice.

“We are confident that both the Nigerian and American judicial systems will provide Mr. Gambaryan with a fair opportunity to substantiate his claims in court. Until then, we advise the public to exercise caution and not be swayed by Mr. Gambaryan’s unfounded and malicious claims”.
