Abia State Government has commenced plans to review and re-gazette autonomous communities across the state as part of efforts to restore order, strengthen grassroots governance and address recurring communal disputes.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Saturday at the JAAC Secretariat in Umuahia during a statewide meeting of Presidents-General of towns and developmental Unions.

The meeting was convened by the State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Prince Nwachukwu said the exercise had become necessary due to the irregularities observed in the existing structure of autonomous communities, noting that the last gazetting was carried out about 11 years ago.

“We are embarking on review of autonomous communities. If we go to our gazettes, as carried out about 11 years ago, when the last gazetting was done, we are overdue, but we are supposed to have re-gazetted by last year because it’s done once every 10 years.

“You see all sorts of operations. You will find instances where one village is gazetted into two autonomous communities.

“You will find instances where one village is in one community but certain kindreds and families are in another community. Those are confusions.

“There are situations where a traditional ruler, in his domain, who is a custodian of an autonomous community, has his village ceeded to another Traditional Ruler.

“So he has become a subject of that Traditional Ruler. Are you aware of those things? Those are operations. So this year we are going to do a regazeting.

“These things call for crisis. There is no week I receive anything less than 50 petitions in my office. None!”, he stated.

The Commissioner explained that the persistent disputes arising from such anomalies informed the establishment of conflict management and mediation centres in all local government areas of the State.

He further announced that the government would institutionalize town and development Unions to ensure proper coordination and accountability at the grassroots level.

“We want to institutionalize town and development Unions. So, you (participants) can find out that your details have been taken. We want to make sure, who the leaders of these town and community development Unions in the various communities are.

“So we want to make sure we are doing documentations. The same kind of thing that is happening with traditional institutions, where two, three, four, five people will go through the process of being elected traditional rulers of their places.

“And then one person will win, the other four will not agree. And everybody, four of them or five of them will go to the local government and insist that they must be received. And all of them are received.

“We are putting a stop to all those for the sake of the progress of our land. So we are creating a statewide database”, he said.

Prince Nwachukwu emphasised that the government has no interest in determining who emerges as President-General or community development chairman, but insisted that due process must be followed.

He described the meeting as a decisive step towards strengthening grassroots governance, noting that town and development Unions have historically driven rural development but have recently been weakened by poor structure, lack of documentation and leadership conflicts.

Prince Nwachukwu who clarified roles within the community leadership system, stated that traditional rulers remain custodians of culture and symbols of unity, while Presidents-General and development Unions leaders serve as administrators and drivers of development.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (rtd.), described the meeting as a novel initiative and stressed that security remains a collective responsibility.

He urged community leaders to take intelligence gathering seriously, noting that effective security depends on timely information sharing.

In their remarks, the Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Afuruobi, and a representative of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Sampson Jinanwa, pledged continued collaboration with development uynions to enhance peace and development at the grassroots.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, said the meeting marked the beginning of a new phase in the state’s efforts to strengthen community governance.

“This engagement has therefore be convened to establish a direct interface between government and the leadership of town and development unions”, she said.

Leaders of various communities, including Dr Greene Nwoha of Oro-Ibere Autonomous Community, Chief Yuccee Ottah Uwah of Abiriba Communal Improvement Union Worldwide, and Hon. Chukwudi Edward Egwuonwu of Ozuitem Community, commended Governor Alex Otti for convening the meeting, describing it as the first of its kind and expressing optimism that it would enhance security, peace and development across the state.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has stressed the need for urgent curriculum reform in Nigeria’s education system, warning that outdated academic content cannot prepare students for a technology-driven global economy.

Governor Otti made this known on Thursday while receiving the President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Prof. Pius Olarenwaju, and members of the Institute at his office in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor who commended the Institute for updating its curriculum, said Abia State was willing to adopt CIBN’s framework across its tertiary institutions.

He noted that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and 3D printing had reshaped the global economy, making curriculum reform critical.

“I want to congratulate you for the changes that you have also made, particularly in curriculum.

You’ll find that the world keeps changing every day. 

“So if you have curricula that were drafted in 2004, and then this is 2026, you’ll be teaching people camera in the 21st century.

“So that’s also what we are doing here, but the most important job for us in the educational sector is curricula.

“Then what are you teaching them is also as important, because today we talk about artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing and then you are still struggling with the knowledge of yesteryears. 

“So I am happy that you have done that and if we have an opportunity to have a look at what you did.

“We also want to domesticate it in the institutions here, at Abia State University, Uturu and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, even the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

“We don’t believe in reinventing the wheel therefore if you have solved the problem, we just take the solution and that is important”, Governor Otti added.

The Governor also highlighted reforms in the State’s Education sector, including free and compulsory education, which he said had led to over a 100 per cent increase in school enrolment.

He disclosed that his government had recruited 5,394 teachers and was currently employing an additional 4,000 from over 29,000 applicants, stressing that the process was strictly merit-based.

According to the Governor, continuous learning remains essential to personal and societal development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained development and stronger collaboration with the CIBN.

Earlier, Prof. Olarenwaju said CIBN remained committed to youth development through curriculum reform, digitalised examinations and initiatives such as the Generation Next programme and the Legacy Project, which involves the construction of modern lecture theatres in tertiary institutions nationwide.

Prof. Olarenwaju called for deeper collaboration between CIBN and the Abia State Government in areas such as infrastructure development, financial literacy, financial inclusion and completion of the Institute’s state office.

He announced CIBN’s involvement in a national programme to train 10 million women and youths on financial inclusion.

“I was in Aso Rock with the vice president of this country, and the institute was one of those institutes that was appointed to train ten million women and youth on financial inclusion.

“We are intentional about this and we will go ahead to do this”, he said.

Prof Olarenwaju also disclosed plans to address the “Japa syndrome” through targeted training and upskilling programmes aimed at retaining talent within the country.

He commended Governor Otti’s leadership and recalled that CIBN’s request for land to establish a state office in 2023 was approved within one year, describing it as evidence of governance driven by action.

The CIBN President further lauded the present administration’s achievements, citing reported improvements in economic growth, poverty reduction, job creation, healthcare delivery, education, security and infrastructure.

He described the Governor as a goodwill ambassador of the Institute and disclosed plans to organise an event to honour outstanding former bank chief executives, inviting Otti to attend.

This disclosure was made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference and Book Launch held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr. Edun noted that the initiative, which currently benefits over 15 million poor and vulnerable households across the country, will be scaled up to include more Nigerians at the grassroots level.

According to the Minister, the Federal Government remains focused on ensuring that the pains of ongoing economic reforms are mitigated through transparent and accountable interventions.

“There is an attempt to ensure that the pains of reform are immediately alleviated.

That’s why there is a transparent, accountable, and robust system of providing direct payments to 15 million households,” he stated.

Mr. Edun further explained that the digitalized cash transfer system ensures full accountability, as each beneficiary is identified by name, national identity number (NIN), and is paid directly into a verified bank account or mobile wallet.

“In some areas where people say they haven’t heard of anyone receiving the payments, we immediately call for the data to verify this.

Every individual on the list is digitally captured and traceable.

There is accountability, transparency, and a record,” he emphasized.

The Minister also revealed that the Federal Government is introducing a new ward-based development initiative designed to channel resources directly to Nigeria’s 8,809 wards across the 774 local government areas.

He explained that the new framework will empower economically active citizens—particularly small businesses and cottage industries—by providing financial support at the local level.

“This initiative will ensure that the benefits of the current reforms reach the grassroots and strengthen inclusive economic growth nationwide,” Mr. Edun added.

Speaking at them same event, Dr. Arunma Oteh, Founder of the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership, called for increased infrastructure investment and the adoption of patient capital to drive sustainable growth.

Dr. Oteh emphasized that Nigeria must raise infrastructure spending to 12 percent of GDP to close the existing gap and boost productivity.

“China, over the years, invested 24 percent of its GDP in infrastructure. At best, we do 4 to 5 percent.

If we want to bridge the infrastructure gap, we must raise this to at least 12 percent,” she said.

She also underscored the need to equip young Nigerians for leadership, stressing that sustained investments in human capital and infrastructure are critical to achieving long-term economic transformation.

The conference brought together key policymakers, thought leaders, and development partners to deliberate on strategies for inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in Nigeria.

The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) has unveiled plans to drive President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate on industrial development in the South-East, selecting Aba, Abia State as the hub for the initiative.

The Institute’s Chairman and former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, and its Director-General, Prof Ayo Omotayo, disclosed this during a courtesy call on Governor Alex Otti, at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, commended Governor Otti for what he described as good governance in Abia, stressing that the decision to situate the hub in the State was well deserved.

Contributing, the DG, NIPSS, Prof Ayo Omotayo explained that the choice of Aba was evidence-based and reflected the South-East’s long-standing reputation for Innovation, Trade and Industry.

“Mr President believes that a whole lot of potentials exist in all the six geographical regions, and that we must unlock those potentials. 

“We found that for trade and industry, out of the six geographical zones, the most talents exist more in the South-East.

“Without doubt, the South-East has the natural talent for factories, for innovation, for buildings, and so on. So, we chose the South-East as the best hub for local industrial development, local industrial revitalisation of what it used to do. After the South-East was chosen, we broke them down into each of the states.

“At the National Institute, we don’t put emotions into things. It’s based on the data and we found that Abia is the hub for local inventions, local innovations, and an area where we can easily take out local content”, Prof Omotayo stated.

In his response, Governor Otti expressed appreciation to NIPSS for resisting pressure from other quarters and choosing Abia and noted that the decision was in line with the ongoing economic transformation of the State.

“I want to also thank you for considering Abia and resisting the pressure from others. I want to assure you that the decision you took is the right decision. 

“I can assure you that this one fits perfectly into what we are quietly doing here. You may not have known that we just set up an Export Growth Lab in Abia”, the Governor said.

He assured the Institute of his administration’s support in implementing President Tinubu’s industrialization mandate and directed his Principal Secretary and Chief Strategy Officer to liaise with NIPSS to provide all necessary assistance.

Governor Otti who highlighted Abia’s industrial capacity, disclosed that the Ariaria International Market alone hosts about 60,000 shoemakers, while the State has also restructured the management of the Enyimba Shoe and Garment Factories.

“The state has also taken active interest in the management of Enyimba Shoe and Garment Factories. So they appointed new management who are funding it very well. 

“And NIPSS, you may also want to take interest. Just see what we are doing there. It’s still early days, but I’m sure you’ll be happy. 

“Our predecessors handed it over to us, but the structure and the management was very faulty. So we spent over a year trying to untie some of the roadblocks, and then I think we have gotten it off the ground now”, the Governor explained.

The Abia State Government has secured approval from the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to take over Star Paper Mill and revive the once-thriving company as part of its industrialization agenda.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu announced the development on Monday, while briefing Newsmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu described the approval as a strategic move to stimulate economic growth in the State.

“The revitalisation of this moribund company is in line with one of the State Government’s economic policies of revitalising moribund companies and selling same to serious and capable investors”, Kanu said.

He explained that the State Government’s priority is to ensure that revived industries provide employment opportunities for Abians and generate the much needed revenue for the State.

“The State Government’s stake in the company, when fully operational, will be minimal, but enough to ensure that the state remains well-positioned to monitor the activities of the company to ensure that the state government and Abians are not short-changed in any way or manner”, he added.

The Commissioner further revealed that other companies marked for revitalization under the administration’s industrial policy include Afro Beverages, Aba Textile Mills, International Equitable Association, and Kent Biscuits.

On Environmental matters, Kanu disclosed that the Ministry of Environment had commenced house-to-house sanitary inspections across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.

The Commissioner who explained that defaulters would be prosecuted in line with Abia State Environmental law, said that the exercise is being carried out under the “Keep Abia Clean Initiative“, which was launched on 1st August 2025.

As pact of an effort to support and transform the economy of Abia women and youths, the wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti has launched her foundation ‘Safe Tent Care Foundation’ to oversee all her pet projects in the State.

The foundation through partnership with Vivdak Catering and Event Institute, trained and empowered 54, Abia women and youths in the area of catering, pastry, food production and decoration.

Presenting the starter packs of oven, gas cylinder, 1 bag of floor, 5, litre of vegetable oil and a seed grant of #200, 000 each to the first cohort of graduands of the skill up Abia women at the Aba Sports Club Complex today, Mrs. Otti said, in today’s competitive world, upskilling and empowerment are not luxuries; they are necessities.

For our young women these skills open the doors to dignity, financial independence, and the ability to avoid the vulnerabilities that you might otherwise face as you journey into the business world.

Mrs. Otti also explained that the Safe Tent Care Initiative is her humanitarian pet project based in Abia State.

It exists to provide safe and supportive spaces for the underprivileged especially women, girls, and children to gain the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive.

Our work spans skill acquisition, economic empowerment, education, healthcare, children’s wellbeing, nutrition, immunisation, psychosocial support, and advocacy for rights and equality.

“At the heart of the Safe Tent Care Initiative is a commitment to helping vulnerable people live healthy, independent, and fulfillment of their lives” Mrs. Otti further stated.

Mrs. Vivian Obilor, the CEO, of Vivdak Catering and Event Institute, said that the skill up Abia women project is a good way of establishing women in business to fight poverty.

She appeals to all and sundry to patronize the graduands in order to stay afloat in their businesses.

In their good will messages the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, who spoke on behalf of other commissioners said that the great investment made in the live of the 54, graduands of the skill up Abia women will lift the families out of poverty and at the same time impacts on Abia economy.

One of the graduands, Miss. Ihuoma Ananaba, who spoke to National Ambassador Newspaper could not hide her joy.

She appreciates the wife of the Governor for exercising her compassion in training and empowering them to become business owners.

Meanwhile, donations were made by Abia business leaders and some government functionaries in support of Mrs. Otti and her pet projects.

The Abia State Government has assured traders at the Ariaria International Market, Aba that no trader will be subjected to substandard conditions during the first phase of the planned remodelling of the B-Line.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem, gave the assurance on Monday after the tripartite committee comprising the State Government, the developer, and representatives of the traders inspected the B-line section of Ariaria International Market slated for demolition and remodelling.

Chief Inem said the inspection was to ascertain the level of readiness of the Free Trade Zone, which will serve as one of the temporary location sites for traders displaced from the B-line, and to ensure that those affected by the reconstruction are adequately relocated within the market.

He noted that the relocation would pave the way for the demolition of the existing B-Line, which he described as “dilapidated and so dangerous”, and posed a major safety risk to traders and customers alike.

“The B-Line is almost an accident bound to happen. By the grace of God, His Excellency wants us to move with a speed to ensure that the accident doesn’t happen. And the remodelling takes care of that”, Chief Inem said.

According to him, the developer handling the project, Check-Best International Limited, has already secured spaces for the temporary relocation and is putting measures in place to ensure the site is conducive.

“The developer promised us that he has acquired some spaces within the market environment and we needed to come and ensure that the place is conducive to relocate these traders while the reconstruction goes on”, the Governor’s Aide added.

Chief Inem reiterated the present administration commitment to transforming the Ariaria International Market into a modern trading hub that meets global standards.

He added that the State Government would not allow any trader to operate in “subhuman conditions” during the period of the reconstruction.

Speaking on the progress of the project, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of Check-Best International Limited, Mr Chiedozie Njoku, who is the developer handling the section of the market, explained that preliminary works had already begun.

Mr Njoku who disclosed that the company had gradually commenced pre-construction work at the B-Line however emphasised that the immediate priority was to ensure that the temporary site for traders was ready and fit for use.

“What we want to make sure is that the temporary location zone is fit for them to come and start doing their businesses. So give and take, in the next four weeks, everything will be set, both the location and the actual construction”, he assured.

Mr Njoku explained that the project would be implemented in three phases, with the first phase subdivided into three zones to allow for a gradual relocation of traders.

“In the first phase, we’re looking at giving it 24 months, but at least a quarter of the first phase would have been concluded in about eight months.

“Subsequently, the other zones will come, but in 24 months, the phase one will be completed, then we’ll move over to the second phase”, he said.

He however observed that misinformation had posed a major challenge to the smooth take-off of the project, but expressed gratitude that series of recent meetings convened by the Tripartite Committee had helped traders gain a better understanding of the project and the government’s good intentions for them.

Also, the Chairman of Ariaria International Market, Chief Michael Aniorji, thanked Governor Otti for coming to the rescue of traders, noting that they had long desired the remodelling.

He expressed hope that the developer would make further efforts to accommodate more traders in the relocation plan.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, is set to formally commission the Aba Export Lab on 8th July 2025, as part of the State Government’s renewed drive towards export-led industrialisation and economic rejuvenation.

The Export Lab is expected to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive state-level trade policy aimed at driving sustainable growth and boosting foreign exchange earnings for the State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this on Monday, while briefing Journalists in Umuahia, said the Export Lab is a major initiative under the Growth Exports Pillar of Governor Alex Otti’s Economic Rejuvenation Agenda.

“The commissioning of this Export Growth Lab signals a strategic shift towards an export-led industrialisation drive in Abia State, with Aba at the forefront as the State’s industrial and innovation hub”, Prince Kanu stated.

He explained that the lab would serve as a platform to help local businesses identify viable international markets for their products, strengthen internal capacities, and kick-start export activities.

Prince Kanu further stated that in its initial six-month phase, about 20 carefully selected Aba-based businesses will receive export readiness training, market leads and strategies to expand into the African market.

“The primary purpose of the export growth lab is the provision of a platform for export development within the state. This lab will provide targeted interactions to help businesses identify viable international markets for products manufactured and made in Abia State, assess and strengthen their internal capabilities while initiating export activities.

“In this first phase, a number of carefully selected and qualified businesses will be chosen as pilots. The program is designed to run for six months in the first instance. 

“During this period, there will be export readiness training and sensitization for companies involved, development of tailored export strategies and roadmaps, capacity building in marketing, compliance, logistics, and operations, facilitation of lead generation and market trials, performance evaluation and impact assessment to inform future scale-ups”, the Commissioner explained.

He listed the expected outcomes to include verified market leads and initial export transactions for the participating businesses, improvements in pricing, packaging, production management, and compliance with international standards.

According to the Commissioner, the programme also aims to build the capacity of key Ministries and Agencies to design effective export support policies.

Prince Kanu listed the main products of focus as the famed Aquatic Lot, a product with protected cultural and commercial identity, safety footwear and industrial gear, and locally made apparels targeted at the African diaspora.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Industries and SMEs, Mr Mike Akpara, said the initiative would restore Aba’s reputation as the “Japan of Africa”.

“What the export lab is going to do is instil confidence into the producers. Basically they will be confident in their products and they will want to write ‘Made in Aba’ on them,” Mr Akpara said.

He emphasised that the Lab would equip producers with the skills to meet international finishing and packaging standards, and ensure their products can compete globally.

“The Government is just going to produce the enabling environment and that is exactly what the government is doing.

“Apart from providing good roads and infrastructure, this export lab is to facilitate exports so that we will be able to receive dollars in return”, Akpara stated.

He stressed that businesses would participate in the programme free of charge adding that increased exports would ultimately generate employment and more revenue for the State.

Also speaking, the Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Strategy Officer, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, said the Lab would mark a new phase in harnessing the entrepreneurial capacity of the people of Abia.

“What we may not have done is what this lab is going to help us do, to take those products from being made as crafts to industrial production, industrial quality, and quality that can be accepted anywhere in the world”, Mr MBA -Uzoukwu said.

He noted that while Abia-made products already find their way into global markets, the Export Lab would help formalise and scale the success under frameworks such as the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and World Trade Organisation rules.

“It’s a very exciting time for us. It’s very ambitious. We think the Government is rising to the challenge of supporting its people in ways that are not so obvious like infrastructure of roads and power”, Mr Mba-Uzoukwu said.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem, has reassured traders at the Ekeoha Shopping Center Aba, that the current administration of Governor Alex Otti has not approved any further demolitions at the market.

Chief Inem gave the assurance on Wednesday, while addressing traders at the market after inspecting the Phase 1 site of the ongoing reconstruction at the market.

The Governor’s Aide who also serves as the Chairman, Ekeoha Remodeling Committee, emphasized that the Governor’s primary concern is the comfort and convenience of traders during the reconstruction process.

“I want to categorically state to you that the Governor has not approved any further demolition.

“It is the position of this government that before any other phase of demolition will start, this one (Phase 1) will be completed and people will start trading in it. That is the message from Dr. Alex Otti.

“The primary interest of His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti is comfort”, he said.

Chief Inem explained that the government understands the hardship traders are undergoing due to the ongoing project and is putting pressure on contractors to deliver the first phase as soon as possible.

“The Government of Dr. Alex Otti is determined that this place must be delivered timely because we know that people are going through a lot of inconvenience.

“We put too much pressure on the people handling the job, both the concessioner, the contractor, sub or major, to make sure that this section of the project is delivered because when it is delivered, it reduces the pressure on everybody, both on the traders and on the government”, Chief Inem explained.

He clarified that the Remodeling Committee had planned a town hall meeting to engage with traders and provide updates on the project, but that meeting was rescheduled due to a letter from the market leadership requesting an audience with the Governor.

“We got a letter from your leaders and His Excellency said that before you do that meeting, let those people that signed that letter and maybe some others come and see the government on Monday with the Chief of Staff presiding”, he explained.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Hon Kingsley Nwokocha reassured traders of the Governor’s commitment to completing the shops on schedule.

“We are here to reassure every trader in this market that His Excellency stands with you and that he wants these shops to be completed on time, so that each and every one of the traders will move into their new shops”, he said.

Hon Nwokocha appealed to traders not to accept any misleading claims from people spreading false information, assuring them that no shops would be demolished until the current project is completed.

He reminded the traders of the administration’s support for continuity in market leadership during the project and revealed that he personally appealed to the Governor to retain the current executives to ensure stability.

In his remarks, the Chairman, Ekeoha Shopping Center, Mr Emeka Okeke expressed gratitude to the government representatives for personally visiting the market to dispel the ongoing rumors.

Mr. Okeke also appreciated the government’s directive to halt any further demolitions until the completion of the first phase, reaffirming the traders’ continued support for the present administration and urged all traders to remain united in the interest of progress.

He also commended the State Government for demonstrating its commitment to swiftly completing and handing over the first phase of the market to traders.

After thirty two years of creation, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), still points inadequate physical facilities as a major challenge confronting the university.

Established in 1992 by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ibrahim Babangida, through Decree No. 48 of November 1992. The establishment was aimed to address key issues in agricultural education, including linking education, research, and production more effectively, and preparing graduates for self-employment.

Regrettably, after several years of establishment, the institution which was dedicated to the training of her students to become professionally competent and confident graduates with enviable dexterity, still struggles with challenges that hinder the fulfillment of its vision.

Speaking at the just concluded 2025 Founder’s Day celebration and the 2nd
Michael Iheonukara Okpara Lecture Series, held at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, said there is a compelling need for massive injections of funds for the upgrade of the university’s physical environment.

According to him, the major problem of the university currently is inadequate physical facilities. He said the state of the university’s physical facilities belies their collective commitment to provide quality education for their students, stating that the best curriculum would suffer significant deficit, if all the facilities and physical structures needed for effective delivery were not fully aggravated.

Prof Iwe stressed the importance of injecting massive funds into the school, especially when the university was among those that started with the impediment of not having a takeoff grant from the Federal Government.

“We still reiterate our appeal to the Federal Government to kindly consider our persistent request for the release of our take off grant. Such a gesture will go a long way in positively changing the fortunes of the Michael Okpara University, Umudike.

“We also call on organizations and highly spirited individuals to assist us with the endowment of professorial chairs, buildings, equipment and scholarships for our staff and students. Let me at this point acknowledge that the Dr. Michael Okpara Foundation has made good her promise of instituting scholarship for Post graduate students in this university. We have enrolled the first five students fully sponsored by the Foundation in our various Post Graduate programs”.

Prof Iwe further acknowledged the efforts of past vice chancellors of the university, applauding their contributions in repositioning the school.

He recounted some notable progress his administration has recorded to include the building of some facilities, especially the permanent site. “We have also completed some others, including this ultra-modern lecture theatre which was just commissioned by our amiable Pro- Chancellor, Comrade Fidelis Edeh.

“The various arms and support organs of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike are quite vibrant. In consonance with the institution’s mandate, these outfits strive to enthrone a functional, sustainable, excellence-driven and productive research culture, especially in Agriculture, Science, Engineering, Technology and Management to solve societal problems, prioritizing the needs of the catchment areas and the nation. For example, the Research Directorate has been proactively hosting high level symposia, research exhibitions and conferences”.

During the 2nd Michael Iheonukara Okpara Lecture, Prof Iwe called on the South East Development Commission and the Governors of the Southeastern states to honour and preserve Dr. M.I. Okpara’s legacy.

He said they should leverage on the Igbo person’s entrepreneurial spirit, the services of technology, land holding and the resources therein, to reposition the South East to reclaim its position as leader among regions in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.

In his speech, the chairman on the occasion and Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Sen Austin Akobundu, praised the unique qualities of Dr M.I. Okpara, describing him as a political sage whose legacy remained indelible.

He said the late Premier of the Eastern Region was a visionary leader and statesman who stood firmly for his people when it mattered most and
pledged his commitment to support MOUAU in revitalizing the Southeast through institutions like the South East Development Commission and ensuring that agriculture which he said was Dr Okpara’s chosen tool for empowerment, returns to the front burner of national development.

Delivering his lecture on “Agripreneur Model for Attainment of National Food Security and Economic Development: The M.I. Okpara Approach in Retrospect, Leveraging the South East Development Commission (SEDC) as a Modern Vehicle for Legacy Continuity”, the guest lecturer and chairman, Governing Board of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Dr Emeka Wogu, who was represented by Prof Nnamdi Nwaneri, highlighted the economic importance of the M.I Okpara’s model in the South East, a term he referred to as, “Okparanomics”.

Dr Wogu emphasized that the future of the South East could be reclaimed through Agripreneurship, pointing that the South East Development Commission represents a bold vision combining timeless wisdom with modern innovation, creating a pathway to regional prosperity and self-determination.

Earlier, in his speech, the Governor of the State, Dr Alex Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Cliff Agbaeze, congratulated the Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe for his purposeful leadership since his assumption of office in 2021.

According to the Governor, the university under Prof Iwe had witnessed tremendous progress, as well as, human resources development.

He praised the leadership of Dr. Michael Okpara, crediting it for the significant agricultural development in the South East. At the state level, the Governor emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing agricultural technology and supporting agro-based entrepreneurs to boost food production, noting that the government is constructing roads to ease the evacuation of farm produce and reduce post-harvest losses. “Additionally, extension services are being provided to farmers, and an enabling environment is being created for agro-businesses to thrive”.

The Governor, however, outlined his vision to build a robust agricultural sector that ensures food security and generates employment opportunities.

In a vote of thanks, the first son of the late Premier, Chief Uzodinma Okpara, commended the guest lecturer for positing a way forward for South East, using the Dr M.I Okpara’s model, adding that when jobs are created and Agriculture promoted, the economy would be stabilized.

Uzodinma Okpara, however appreciated the MOUAU for sustaining the legacy of his late father through the bi- annual public lecture.

The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has declared its readiness to collaborate with the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), in driving a comprehensive agricultural revolution across the South-East region.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, who made this known during the Institution’s 2025 Founder’s Day celebration cum 2nd Dr Michael Okpara’s Public Lecture held recently, said the institution is willing, available, ready and enthusiastic to partner with the SEDC, to bring about agricultural revolution in Southeastern Nigeria in line with the vision of the late sage, Dr. Iheonukara Michael Okpara.

Prof Iwe, disclosed that both the university and the South East Development Commission, can explore areas of mutual interest aimed at transforming agriculture, boosting food security and empowering rural communities.

He recalled that during his inaugural address as Vice-Chancellor, he affirmed his desire to ensure that the university turns out self-reliant farmers and entrepreneurial staff and students. As part of efforts to actualize this commitment, the VC stated that his administration introduced the MOUAU Agric Graduate Loan Scheme. “Under this scheme, graduates from different Colleges of the university are given between N120,000 to N400,000 naira to establish businesses in fish farming, poultry farming, cassava production, piggery, apiculture, palm oil marketing and agric input sales”.

Iwe expressed hope that the scheme could be sustainable and up scaled, through partnership. “The South East Development Commission (SEDC), organizations and personalities can support the university to expand the programme and upwardly review the amount to be given to beneficiaries”, he added.

The Vice Chancellor noted that the university has previously benefitted from relationship linkages and collaborations with individuals, institutions and agencies, adding that establishing a new partnership with the South-East Development Commission would be highly valuable, considering its potential impact on regional development.

He said organisations like the TETFUND has funded most of their infrastructural projects, while the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), built and equipped a state of the art weather station in the school, which he said is fully functional and automatically referenced with the World Meteorological Organization.

“The National office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), assisted us by equipping our Chemistry and Chemical Engineering laboratories. Dr. Chika Ikenga has furnished our Chemistry Laboratory and UYK Foundation facilitated the installation of a 500KVA generator for our bread and biscuits factory. Arrangements are being made for the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) to establish a Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Technology in this institution.

“In addition, the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation has indicated interest in instituting a Graduate Agripreneur Award to qualified graduates of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

“Just recently we entered a relationship with the Hainan University (HNU), Hainan Province China for staff and student exchanges, with full scholarships.Furthermore, we have a recent working relationship with the Centre for Creative Ecology, Kibbutz Lotan, Isreal, among others”, he narrated.

Prof Iwe equally highlighted the institution’s strong capabilities in research, innovation and training. The Initiatives he said were currently being funded by both the university and TETFUND. He suggested that the SEDC could consider supporting these innovative research efforts, among other areas of assistance.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has emphasized the urgent need for timely execution of the proposed multi-million dollar Dairy Farm in the State, urging promoters of the project to establish clear timelines and fast-track implementation.

The Governor made the call on Sunday, while receiving a progress report from a delegation of Blue Ribbon Company, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Sir Idris Wabara.

Governor Otti, who had granted approval in principle for the project last year, expressed concern over the pace of progress, noting that a year after the initial agreement, execution was still pending.

“We know that it is something that would take a little bit of time, maybe we were not expecting that it will take one year to still be on the drawing table.

“It is heartwarming that you are intensively on it. Maybe, we need to have a smaller section, where you will table exactly what you need so that we can also say what we can do.

“But, most importantly, we need to also establish timelines of delivery”,he stated.

He urged the Blue Ribbon team to secure short-term funding from local financial institutions while continuing engagements with international financiers such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), Afreximbank, and Japanese investors.

According to the Governor, such move would kick-start the project and reduce overall costs by avoiding further delays.

“If there is anything we can help you with, you can take that for granted. My team and I would do everything possible to support you so that the project can take off”, Governor Otti assured.

In his remarks earlier, Sir Idris Wabara disclosed that the company has made considerable strides, including consultations with AfDB and Afreximbank, adding that preliminary approvals are already in the pipeline.

He noted that Israeli dairy and agricultural experts had been brought in to conduct feasibility studies and develop the master plan, which would be finalized in Abia before moving to Lagos for further processing with PwC.

Sir Wabara added that the groundbreaking ceremony is slated for later this year and emphasized that, with Governor Otti’s support, the project would place Abia at the forefront of livestock and dairy investment in the country.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has emphasized that his administration’s partnership with manufacturers and investors is not about Government patronage but about fostering economic growth in the State.

Governor Otti stated this, on Wednesday, at his conference hall in Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA, while receiving a delegation from Haier Global Business, led by its Director for Africa, Mr. Sunny Liu.

The Governor urged the company to invest in Abia, stating that his government operates on the principles of partnership and economic value addition.

“Our Government is a Government of partnerships. In the last 22 months, we have engaged with the Private Sector like you on a Public-Private Partnership.

“Our partnership is not about patronising you, but it is about having you set up manufacturing base here”, Governor Otti stated.

The Governor highlighted Abia’s strong market potential, pointing out that Haier Global’s range of products, including tractors and electronics, already has a substantial customer base in the State and assured the company of Government support if it decides to invest in Abia.

“I am sure you know about Aba. If you get into Aba, there is no way you will not see a chunk of your products.

“They do travel to other places to get them, So if you were manufacturing around here, then it reduces the prices and cuts out logistics cost.

“For us what is most important is that jobs are created. When you are producing here, you are also increasing the economic base of the State in terms of GDP and even IGR”. Otti said.

He further stated that the State Government team would engage with the company to explore specific areas of collaboration and swiftly address necessary requirements for investment.

Earlier, Haier Global’s Director for Africa, Mr. Sunny Liu, expressed the company’s interest in collaborating with the Abia State Government.

He noted that Haier Global is a leading provider of digital solutions and is eager to partner with the State in Education, Energy, and Agriculture, among other sectors.

Also, the Haier Global Representative, Mr. Uche Chime, revealed that the company is setting up an assembly plant in one of the South Eastern States and is keen on establishing a manufacturing base in Abia.

He also expressed interest in supporting the State Government’s Smart School Initiative by supplying Solar systyems, IT Equipments, indoor classrooms, and E-Classroom Solutions.

The Deputy Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria, Mr. Peter Keulers, has affirmed his country’s commitment to fostering bilateral relationship with Abia State, particularly in the areas of Waste management, Circular Economy and Renewable Energy.

Speaking during a visit to Governor Alex Otti, on Wednesday, alongside the Management Team of Kaltani Company, at Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA, Mr. Keulers noted that the circular economy is a priority for the Netherlands, as it promotes sustainability, resource efficiency, and job creation.

He highlighted the economic opportunities and employment potential inherent in circular economy initiatives adding that it would lead to a more resilient economy with reduced waste and pollution while maximizing the use of scarce resources.

“Circular economy is a topic that is very close to the heart of our Government. We are trying to be net zero in 2050. Promoting circular economy makes a lot of sense and circular economy has many advantages.

“It will lead to a more sustainable and resilient economy with less waste and less pollution even leda to a more efficient use of resources that are often scarce.

“It will also engender proper quality of life. It will create all kinds of economic opportunities and jobs in the future “, the Deputy Consul stated.

According to Mr. Keulers, the delegation was on a scoping mission to engage with the State Government, Private Sector, and Research Institutions to explore the deployment of Dutch technology and expertise to achieve both commercial and policy objectives.

“We are here to promote bilateral-economic plans and we have done a couple of things in circular economy. That is at the policy level to create business cooperation.

“At policy level we were also together with the colleagues at the EU and with the circular business platform”, he said.

Mr Keulers expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the proposed Kaltani Waste Management Facility, a Waste Management Company working with the Abia State Government, pointing out that the State has attracted international attention from foreign diplomats and businesses.

Also, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kaltani Company, Mr. Charles Nnanna, expressed his company’s commitment to partnering the State Government on its waste-to-wealth initiative.

Mr Nnanna who noted that he is excited to work with the present administration to achieve its vision for the State, added they are are fully committed to waste collection and recycling efforts, with a focus on job creation and environmental sustainability.

“We intend to galvanise waste, create jobs, and address multiple layers of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he added.

Responding, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to Environmental Sanitation and sustainable Waste Management and emphasized the transformation Abia State has undergone since May 2023.

The Governor said that Abia was once ranked as the dirtiest state in Nigeria but had since made significant strides in cleanliness and urban development.

He added that with the initial cleanup efforts yielding positive results, the State Government is now shifting focus to Waste conversion and sustainability.

He further revealed that his administration had started work with UN-Habitat to develop a new master plan for Aba and Umuahia, drawing inspiration from the original colonial-era urban planning.

He disclosed that his administration is collaborating with Kaltani Company on a waste-to-wealth initiative that will transform waste into valuable products adding that the Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the waste-to-energy initiative.

“Our goal is not just to manage our waste efficiently but to get to a point where we can buy waste from neighboring states to sustain our energy and recycling projects”, the Governor said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, encouraged the Netherlands delegation to consider investing in waste-to-energy conversion, adding that Abia is among the five states selected for the circular economy program financed by the European Union.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed the Electricity Bill into law, which marks a step toward energy independence and economic growth for the State.

The Electricity Bill, which was passed by the Abia State House of Assembly, aligns with the National Electricity Law passed under former President Muhammadu Buhari and is expected to revolutionize electricity generation, transmission and distribution in the State.

Speaking after signing the bill into law at Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the State Assembly for its swift and meticulous passage of the bill, noting that they provided valuable input throughout the legislative process.

The Governor while highlighting the importance of the bill, pointed out that Abia is the only State in Nigeria with a ring-fenced Power system, which integrates Power generation, transmission, and distribution within the State.

He acknowledged that the bill was carefully crafted to protect Aba Power’s investments and grant Government the necessary regulatory oversight.

Governor Otti disclosed that the legal framework for the bill was strengthened by the contributions of Banwo & Ighodalo, a leading law firm, which introduced novel provisions.

The Governor further revealed that additionally, over 15 energy experts from the United States, Canada, South East Asia, and Europe contributed to the 64-page document and offered their expertise pro bono in support of Abia’s Power Sector reform.

“This is the document that will stand the test of time. It is a document that will protect the investment of everyone that wants to invest in Abia.

“It is also a document that speaks renewable energy and the remaining Eight Local Government Areas in the State that are not under the Aba Ringed Fence, we are working hard to bring them under the Umuahia Ringed Fence.

“So this legislation would support that initiative and we are very close to signing an MoU moving forward in that direction. It also would protect prospective investors in Power generation”, the Governor assured

Governor Otti also expressed optimism that Abia would generate excess Power to supply other parts of the Southeast and creat a revenue stream for the State.

“Our dream is that if we are able to provide all the required power for Abia, then we will able to also wheel some Power to other parts of the Southeast to support them and earn some fees for doing that.

“I was engaging with Geometric the other time and they said with the capacity they have, they will be able to wheel Power to Umuahia from the plant and may be, some other parts of the Southeast without necessarily incuring additional costs other than getting a turbine and putting it in place because all the other infrastructure are already in place”, he stated.

Governor Otti disclosed that plans are already in motion to establish the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASCERA), which will oversee the enforcement and management of the new electricity framework and thanked the members of the 8th House of Assembly for their role in advancing the State’s Power Sector.

Presenting the bill for signing, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the Electricity bill as a milestone achievement adding that the bill would position the State on the right path and ceating significant business investment opportunities.

He further stated that the House of Assembly aligns with the Governor’s vision and remains committed to ensuring the successful realization of the Bill for the benefit of Abia people.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, in his remarks, noted that the law emanates from the Electricity Act 2023 which warrants States to form a Regulatory body to regulate and create an electricity market.

The Commissioner pointed out that the Government considered what would work specifically in Abia before crafting the bill and added that the bill provides for Power generation, mainstreaming, protection against vandalism, distribution and regulations among others.

He commended the Governor Otti for realizing the vision of providing independent power for the State which is part of his election manifesto.

The dominance of weak investor sentiments, across market indicators continued, on Tuesday as the All-Share Index (ASI) maintained the losing streak, dropping further by 0.51% to 106,904,25 points, while Market Capitalization eased to N66.94trillion. In a reflection of mixed sentiments, number of deals – an activity measure mellowed by 9.74%. Conversely, volume and value of transactions – other activity measures – remained positive at 28.36% and 21.18% respectively.
By Wednesday, the bears retained their hold on the market, prompting a reduction of 0.44% in the index to 106,436.48, against the 106,904.25 points recorded in the preceding trading session. Similarly, Market Capitalization, another performance indicator, leveled to N66.65 trillion, from the N66. 94 trillion recorded as at Tuesday, March 4, 2024, causing investors to lose N289 billion.
The Index buckled to up to close at 106,780.72 gaining 0.32%, with total market capitalization closing green at N66.87trillion as rational investors and portfolio mangers engage in bargain hunting, next day – Thursday.
As at the close of trading on Friday, March 7, 2025, the ASI declined to 106, 539.0 points with Market Capitalization closing at N66.72 billion, shedding a further 0.23 as against Thursday’s numbers.
Nevertheless, the market breadth was positive with 34 of the listed companies gaining, against 18 losers, even as the domestic equities All-Share Index shaded 1.19% week – on – week.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured investors that Abia remains Nigeria’s top investment destination given the State’s economic potential and conducive business environment.

Governor Otti stated this when he received a delegation led by the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany to Nigeria, Mr. Weert Borner.

The Governor who emphasized that Abia is ripe for investment, with numerous opportunities awaiting credible partners, highlighted ongoing reforms and infrastructure development as key enablers of economic growth in the state.

He pointed out that Abia presents immense potential in Manufacturing, Waste recycling, SME development, and Agro-processing adding that Aba, in particular, holds vast opportunities for SMEs, especially in leather, textiles, and fashion.

“There is no better place for those SMEs than Aba. And they can bring in a whole lot in terms of leather, textiles, fashion etc.

“We are ready to support investors by providing Land, Infrastructure, and Policy backing to ensure their success. Our approach is based on partnerships, not dependency on grants. 

“We bring our value to the table, and our investors bring theirs, creating a larger shared value,” Gov. Otti stated.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that will drive industrial and economic development in the State.

He revealed that as part of efforts to create a business-friendly environment, the State Government is finalizing the acquisition of the Electricity Distribution Company in Umuahia to address power supply challenges.

Governor Otti also noted that Geometric Power Limited is set to provide a long-term solution for Aba, to ensure stable electricity for industries and SMEs.

He directed the Commissioner for Lands and Housing to allocate land for the establishment of a Treated Mosquito Net Factory, a project that the German company is already willing to undertake.

Earlier, the Consul General of Germany to Nigeria, Mr. Weert Borner, expressed a strong interest in fostering economic collaboration between German companies and Abia State.

He commended Governor Otti’s commitment to good governance, which he described as a crucial factor in attracting Foreign Investments.

According to Mr. Borner, German firms are particularly interested in Agriculture, Environmental sustainability, Health, Waste Management, Energy, Vocational Training, and Digital Transformation.

He noted that in the Agricultural sector, German companies are exploring investments in Machinery, Renewable Energy, and Modern Farming Techniques to enhance productivity.

He also identified recycling and the green industry as key areas of investment, citing innovations in chemical recycling pioneered by BASF in Lagos, which could be expanded to Abia.

Mr. Borner revealed that BASF has been actively involved in malaria prevention through its production of coated mosquito nets and is seeking a location in Nigeria to establish a Treated Mosquito Net Factory, which he noted, could create jobs and boost the local economy.

The German Consul General, accompanied by his wife, had earlier visited Aba, where he engaged with the local business community and toured some ailing industries.
