The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), is set to provide free medical services to no fewer than 1,500 residents as part of a five-day medical outreach programme scheduled to commence in the state.

The initiative, which will run from April 13 to April 17, is aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services, including consultations and surgeries, for residents across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, disclosed this at Government House Umuahia on Friday during a press briefing on the planned exercise.

Prof Uche said the outreach aligns with the healthcare vision of Governor Alex Otti, particularly in strengthening partnerships with physicians of Abia origin and other Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora.

According to him, the programme is part of efforts by the State Government to deepen access to affordable and quality healthcare while advancing the goal of universal health coverage.

“As you may recall, health remains one of the priority sectors under the administration of His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti.

“One of the key mandates in the governor’s 11-point agenda is collaboration with physicians of Nigerian and Abia extraction residing abroad to support the delivery of high-quality and affordable healthcare services to our people”, he said.

The Commissioner explained that the governor had, in 2025, directed the Ministry of Health to work with ANPA to organise the 2026 edition of the outreach, following the success of a similar exercise in 2024.

He said the opening ceremony would hold on April 14 at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, at 12 noon, while clinical services would run from April 14 to April 17 at designated centres, including the Abia General Hospital and the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre.

Prof Uche listed the services to be offered to include free medical consultations, general surgeries, gynaecological procedures and eye surgeries.

“We are expecting a team of about 25 doctors from the United States, who will work alongside our local medical personnel.

“Our target is to conduct at least 1,500 medical consultations and up to 100 surgeries within the period”, he said.

The Commissioner urged residents with health challenges, especially those requiring surgical procedures such as fibroid operations and other essential interventions, to take advantage of the opportunity.

He further disclosed that specialist ophthalmologists would also carry out free eye surgeries at the eye unit of the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, and commended the governor for providing the enabling environment and approving funds for logistics and other support services required for the programme.

Prof. Uche said ANPA would contribute medical expertise and consumables, while the State Government would provide operational logistics for the exercise.

He added that the outreach would also feature sexual and reproductive health education for young people, in line with ANPA’s outreach policy, aimed at equipping youths with information for informed life choices.

According to him, another component of the programme would involve the training of 80 health workers on basic life support and emergency response procedures.

“This training is critical in helping frontline health workers manage emergency cases such as cardiac arrest and unconscious patients, especially at peripheral health facilities”, he said.

Prof Uche also announced the commencement of the Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative, a programme designed to promote compassionate care, improved medical ethics and enhanced service delivery across the state’s health system.

He reassured residents that free medical consultations remained open to all, including those who had not undergone prior screening for surgical procedures.

Also speaking, the Coordinator of the Abia ANPA 2026 Medical Outreach, Dr Uloaku Ukaegbu, said all arrangements had been concluded for the exercise.

Dr. Ukaegbu disclosed that over 250 persons had already indicated interest in surgical procedures, adding that the list was currently under review to determine eligible cases.

She said prospective surgical patients would undergo screening and necessary investigations, while blood transfusion support, where required, would be provided free of charge.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Friday said his administration is only at it’s initial stage in the drive to reposition Umuahia as the State Capital through sustained infrastructure development and economic expansion.

Governor Otti stated this at the Umuahia Township Stadium, during a Grand Civic Reception organised in his honour by the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia, comprising Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Ikwuano Local Government Areas.

The Governor highlighted planned development projects, including the construction of a five-star hotel and reiterated his commitment to completing key projects, including the Umuahia Stadium and the Amachara Specialist Hospital, assuring that his administration only initiates projects it is certain to complete.

He assured AbIa residents that ongoing reforms by his administration would permanently reposition the the state capital for sustainable growth adding that the state would not return to the past but continue on a path of transformation.

“The transformation of Umuahia a is at infant stages, it is just starting, we have clearly set out in our mind on what we want Umuahia to look like.

“We are not comparing ourselves with anybody. So when you say you want this place(Umuahia ) to look like Dubai, no, we don’t want to look like Dubai. We want it to look like Umuahia.

“There are still a whole lot of things to do. By the time we are done, I want to assure you that it will never be the same again.

“And you know, at a time when you hit the reset button and you institutionalize good governance and bring dignity back to the people, you don’t even need to talk. It is the people that will tell you that they will never go back to Egypt”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor, disclosed that his administration was finalising arrangements for the construction of a 200 to 250-room five-star hotel in the capital city, noting that the project would enhance tourism and business activities.

He further revealed that the site for the hotel project had already been identified and that a partner agreement would be signed shortly, with a formal groundbreaking expected in the coming weeks.

“I got the draft agreement which I shall sign this weekend to bring in a partner and sign an agreement with a five-star hotel, just like we are doing in Aba, with the Radisson Blu, We are going to do a 200 to 250 room five-star hotel in Umuahia.

“The site has already been identified behind me here. So at the appropriate time in a few weeks when we will do the groundbreaking, we will announce the name of the partner. It’s a name that you know and a name you’ll be very proud of”, he said.

Governor Otti reaffirmed commitment to institutionalising good governance and sustainable development adding that leadership must be rooted in stewardship and service to the people.

He described governance as a sacred responsibility, and pointed out that his administration remains guided by divine direction and public trust.

“We also want to thank God for giving us the privilege, because it’s a privilege to serve our people. I personally see leadership as service, leadership as stewardship.

“Anytime you take away stewardship from leadership, it becomes self-serving. So sometimes you hear politicians tell you that politics is a game of interest. The truth is that the interest they mean is self-interest.

“If it were not self-interest, then politics would be about stewardship. And for us, this is about stewardship”, he said.

Speaking on behalf of members of the Abia State House of Assembly from Ikwuano/Umuahia extraction, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Augustine Okezie, expressed appreciation for the Governor’s developmental strides across the federal constituency, noting that Governor Otti has demonstrated that there is hope in governance.

Also the Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr Chinedum Enwereuzo, who spoke on behalf of his counterparts in Ikwuano and Umuahia North LGAs, said the constituency had never experienced such unprecedented development.

He assured the Governor of the continued support of the people, adding that they were eagerly awaiting the next general election to “repay his good works.”

In their goodwill messages, stakeholders including Chief Uzodinma Okpara, Mr Monday Ubani, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the Federal Commissioner representing Abia at the Federal Character Commission, Chief Victor Ikeji, praised the administration’s performance.

AbIa State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has commended the swift and coordinated emergency response efforts of the State Fire service, following a fire outbreak at a facility linked to Nigerian Breweries Plc in Aba, describing the intervention as timely and effective.

The fire incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, reportedly started at about 3:20 p.m. and was brought under control before 6 p.m. The inferno, broke out at an open space leased from the Nigerian Railway Corporation and affected only empty crates without bottles, with no casualties recorded.

Speaking after an inspection tour of the site, Governor Otti praised the coordinated efforts of emergency agencies especially the professionalism of the Abia State Fire Service and expressed gratitude to God that no lives were lost.

The Governor who also expressed gratitude that the incident was not more severe, emphasised the critical importance of sustained safety measures and preparedness against unforeseen emergency incidents.

“Looking at that place, it’s probably the last place that you’ll expect to have a fire incident because it was just on it’s own, in an open field, so anything could have happened.

“It could be a match, it could be a cigarette or anything but you should be prepared like the boys scout will say while we pray it doesn’t happen again”, he cautioned.

The Governor disclosed that he had monitored the situation closely and initially did not realise the incident involved Nigerian Breweries due to the location of the affected facility.

“It was much later after the incident have been contained that I knew it was Nigerian brewery because it is far away from here. When we tried to locate the place, from our digital device, it didn’t point to Nigeria Breweries” the Governor said.

Governor Otti, acknowledged the longstanding presence of Nigerian Breweries Plc in the state and assured that his administration would continue to provide a conducive and enabling environment for the company to thrive.

“You have been here for almost seventy years and that’s good. All we owe you is an enabling environment for your business to continue to do well.

“This is a place (Abia) where all Nigerians gather and are working together. That is what the new Abia speaks about. Here we don’t have State of origin and we are all equal”.

Earlier, the Brewery Manager, represented by the
Chief Engineer of the Nigerian Breweries PLC, Engr Benjamin Okore, confirmed that the fire began around 3:20 p.m. after a staff member raised an alarm and clarified that the affected area was not part of the main brewing plant.

Engr. Okore further explained that the company activated its emergency response immediately the fire was detected and deployed internal firefighting resources before calling for external assistance.

He added that the company is currently assessing the extent of losses, noting that the fire was extinguished before 6 p.m. by the coordinated support of fire agencies which he commended for being instrumental in containing the inferno.

“The place where the fire incident happened is an open space, a lease facility by the Nigeria railway corporation. Empty crates without bottles were affected while this place that we are now is the main brewery, this is the main plant of the brewery.

“When the fire happened, alarm was raised and we activated our emergency procedure. Our fire fighters were mobilised, our fire truck was mobilised and we used a fire hydrant and other fire fighting measures.

“We also called on the Abia State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service. There was so much team spirit and speed in action. They arrived on time and together as teamwork we were able to contain the fire completely.

“We thank God so much that no lives were lost, nobody was injured, we only had some empty crates without bottles that were damaged. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the root cause”, Engr Okore said.

He further reaffirmed the company’s commitment to collaboration with regulatory and emergency agencies, adding that “We will continue to engage with your government and regulatory agencies and partner with you.

“We already have a good cordial working relationship with the fire service. They come here regularly to work with us, to do emergency drills with us and even give us training.

Earlier in an interview with National Ambassador reporter, the Mayor of Aba North Local Government Area, Mr Timothy Iheke, disclosed that he immediately coordinated response efforts upon receiving information of the fire incident.

The Mayor, who however raised suspicion about the cause of the fire expressed optimism that an investigation will reveal the cause of the incident .

Similarly, the Area Coordinator of the Abia State Harmonised Task Force, Chief Uche Nwogu, described the intensity of the inferno as overwhelming, likening the scene to “hell on earth”.

Chief Nwogu, who expressed relief that the fire did not spread beyond the immediate area, said the swift intervention of multiple fire services, supported by local volunteers, helped contain what could have escalated into a major disaster.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Abia State Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Rev Dr Okey Ihemanma, who represented the Commissioner, warned that the consequences could have been catastrophic if the fire had spread beyond the immediate area.

“There are surrounding buildings, residential buildings, banks, churches, petrol stations, it would have caused a massive infrastructural loss”, he said.

Rev Dr Ihemanma also raised concerns about possible deliberate ignition, arguing that the materials involved could not have caught fire without an external trigger.

“These are petrochemical products, there must be an ignition. Some saboteurs must have come in secretly”, he said.

Governor Otti who was accomplished by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa and other top government officials, also inspected the main brewing facility if the Nigeria Breweries PLC.

Abia State Government has clarified the circumstances surrounding the ongoing strike by the State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), attributing the industrial action to a dispute over the payment of leave allowance, which it says may already be captured within the workers’ consolidated salaries.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), made the clarification on Thursday while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, alongside the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr Kingsley Nwokocha, the Senior Special Assistant on Labour Relations, Sir Comrade Godson Anucha, and the Accountant-General of the State, Deaconess Njum Onyemenam.

Barr. Uwanna explained that the Union had requested payment of leave allowance, prompting the Office of the Accountant-General to demand details of how the claims were computed and confirmation that such allowances had not previously been paid as part of their remuneration.

According to him, preliminary findings by the government indicate that judiciary workers operate a consolidated salary structure which already includes a component referred to as “leave bonus,” raising questions about the legitimacy of the fresh demand.

“So we asked the judiciary workers to provide us with evidence that there is no component of leave bonus in their salary.

“What we got on the 13th of March was a notice that the government should either pay them or they will proceed on industrial action by midnight on the 15th of March”, the Attorney General stated.

He maintained that the State Government does not have full visibility into the detailed payroll structure of judiciary workers, as the arm of government manages its own payroll, and therefore requires documentary evidence to validate the claims.

“So, at that point, the members of the executive of the Judiciary workers were then requested to provide evidence that their salary, because the State, the Office of the Accountant General, does not have information with regards to what the details of their salary is.

“Now, consolidated salary is called consolidated because everything is consolidated into one and paid in different installments.

“Sometimes we also look at what happens in other states. Federal government does not pay for leave allowance to JUSUN members in the nation. That is our finding.

“Just like federal government does not pay leave allowance to, for instance, medical doctor or health workers in the federal civil service because of the consolidated scheme.

“The State Government will pay within 48 hours it realises that there is no leave allowance or leave bonus as a component of their consolidated salary”, he stated.

Barr. Uwanna further addressed the issue of staff verification, disclosing that efforts to verify Judiciary workers had been frustrated by members of the union.

“As you may all recall, when His Excellency Dr Alex Otti was sworn in, he commenced a verification exercise for all civil servants.

“And in view of the fact that we understand that the judiciary is independent, the judiciary staff were not verified when every other staff was verified.

“We then engaged the judiciary for the purpose of getting a consultant that will conduct a verification exercise for the judiciary.

“Indeed, on the 15th, that same day that they went on strike, was the day that was finally slated for the commencement of the verification exercise.

“And one wonders, is this a coincidence, or was it a well-orchestrated scheme to continue to earn salaries by ghost workers and persons who have questionable credentials?”, the Commissioner for Justice queried.

He warned that the continued refusal to undergo verification has adversely affected Pensioners who retired from the judiciary, as their records remain unvalidated.

“JUSUN should allow the judiciary to verify its staff so that those pensioners can be paid. We have had a lot of engagement. Time will fail me to explain the process that we have gone through to ensure that there’s proper verification, so that they can come into a system.

“They’re not going to come into executive system. They are going to come into their own electronic platform.

“Please, I would implore them, once again, not to continue to suffer these Pensioners. We are all citizens of this State, and the pensioners are entitled to their payment.

“So let them call off the strike, so that this verification exercise can be done, and these pensioners can start earning what is due them”, he stated.

Also speaking, the Accountant-General of the state, Deaconess Njum Onyemenam, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prompt payment of workers and pensioners and stressed the need for proper documentation from the Judiciary.

“The only question that we’re asking the judiciary staff today is to provide verifiable proof that they have earned leave allowances that were not paid over the period.

“For the judiciary, they need to provide documentation. They need to submit their documentation and go through the payment process to be able to get their lump sum.

“The Accountant General does not handle the payroll of the judiciary. Accountant General does not handle the payroll of the Judiciary, the Judiciary handles their payroll, and when they come up to make their demands, raise their payment vouchers, their payment vouchers go through the process of payment, that is the only time the Accountant General has the legal right to make that pay”, Onyemanam explained.

A pro-group, known as the Alex Otti 4+4 Movement 2027, has officially launched a statewide campaign aimed at galvanising grassroots and institutional support for the re-election of Dr Alex Otti in the 2027 gubernatorial election.

The movement said its initiative is designed to sustain what it described as ongoing progress in governance, economic transformation and sustainable development across Abia State.

In a press statement issued by its Chairman, Hon. Chibueze Daniel Okah, the group outlined its core mission, noting that it seeks to consolidate achievements recorded under the current administration by mobilising citizens and key stakeholders in support of the present administrations governance policies.

The movement further highlighted voter education and awareness as a key priority, stressing the need to sensitise citizens on the importance of continuity in leadership while encouraging peaceful, transparent and credible participation in the electoral process.

On youth development, the group pledged to promote inclusion and empowerment through entrepreneurship, job creation and digital engagement initiatives.

It also listed economic advocacy among its focal areas, with emphasis on industrial revival, investment promotion and innovative programmes such as waste-to-wealth initiatives aimed at driving economic growth in the state.

In addition, the movement said it would strengthen political structures by collaborating with political platforms, traditional institutions and civil society organisations to foster unity among supporters.

It added that promoting peace and stability would remain central to its operations through issue-based campaigns and efforts to bridge political and societal divides.

The group also noted that it would serve as a feedback mechanism between citizens and government to enhance accountability and ensure effective delivery of projects, while leveraging media and public relations strategies to highlight achievements of the present administration.

On election preparedness, it disclosed plans to organise voter registration drives and encourage active participation in the 2027 polls.

The author noted that over the years, the rising rate of moral decadence and social vices has largely gone unchecked, with key institutions such as the family, religious bodies, schools, communities, and government not doing enough to address the situation. He observed that nurturing the mind is often neglected in favour of the pursuit of wealth and fame, adding that the quest for material possessions now dominates, leading to an unprecedented decline in individual character.

The Vice Chancellor of Clifford University, Prof. Chimezie Allwell Omeonu, described the book launch as timely, particularly at a period when social media plays a dominant role in the lives of students. He urged both institutions and individuals to purchase and read the book.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has said he is seeking a second term in office because his administration still has “unfinished work” to complete, stressing that he would not have pursued re-election if his mission had been fully accomplished.

Governor Otti made this known on Monday, at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South, during a 10,000-man solidarity march organised by stakeholders from the area.

The rally was convened by the Labour Party House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Dannie Ubani.

According to the Governor, “if I had finished the work that I came to do, I wouldn’t be seeking a second term”, noting that significant work remains ahead in his administration’s quest to transform the State.

The Governor who acknowledged the importance of opposition in a democratic system, criticised certain opposition elements in the state, accusing them of engaging in what he described as “politics of witchcraft”.

He noted that it was culturally unacceptable within Igbo society to deny visible achievements such as completed road projects and other infrastructural developments.

Governor Otti also dismissed threats from what he termed “insignificant opposition elements”, which he said do not constitute up to five per cent of the state’s population and maintained that constructive criticism should focus on acknowledging existing achievements while offering better alternatives, rather than denying evident progress.

The Governor used the occasion to urge eligible citizens who are yet to register in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise to do so, warning that participating in political rallies without possessing a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) amounts to “a waste of time.”

He further encouraged members of the Labour Party to complete their e-registration and obtain membership cards to enable them participate in party primaries and support aspirants of their choice.

Reiterating his belief in divine authority, the governor reflected on his political journey, recalling the 2015 Abia State governorship election, which he said he won but was denied, and his eventual victory in the 2023 Abia State governorship election after what he described as “four days of fierce attempts” to thwart his mandate.

He stressed that power ultimately comes from God and that divine timing remains the best.

He expressed appreciation to the people for their continued support and commended the convener of the rally, Mr Dannie Ubani, for organising the event.

In his remarks, Mr Ubani said the rally was organised to demonstrate solidarity with the governor and showcase his leadership style and achievements.

He pledged unwavering support for Governor Otti’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Other speakers at the event, including Dr Chike Nwannunu, Chief Israel Nwaogwugwu and Hon. Barr. Remijus Nji, lauded the governor’s performance in office.

Dr Nwannunu stated that after observing the administration for a year, he became convinced that Governor Otti’s emergence was divinely orchestrated, prompting his decision to support the Governor.

He added that the governor’s achievements in road infrastructure and transport terminals, among others, would remain visible evidence of his legacy even after his tenure.

The royal father called for all to emulate Jesus Christ, who sacrificed his life and died for all to be reconciled to God and show genuine love to their neighbours and people around them and promote peace in the society.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has formally received a number of prominent political figures from the Umunnato–Ngwa axis into the Labour Party, following their defection from the PDP, APC and ADC.

The defectors, including Chief Ncheta Omerekpe, Barr. Onyebuchi Ememanka, Elder Dr GOC Nnaji and other stakeholders, were welcomed on Saturday at the Nbawsi Mini Stadium in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.

Addressing the new members, Governor Otti assured them of equal status within the party, stressing that there would be no discrimination.

“So as you are joining today, you have the same status with me. If you want to be Governor, then you can come and contest with me”, he stated.

The Governor used the occasion to elaborate on the ongoing airport project in Nsulu, describing it as more than a conventional aviation facility.

According to him, the project is conceived as an “airport city” that would stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities.

“Let me thank all our brothers and sisters for their support. Particularly the genuine people who have supported our decision to cite an airport in this community.

“Because it is a city, there are so many things that will come with it. If you are following, you will understand that the Nigerian Air Force has already taken 100 hectares of land to build their facility here.

“A highly-rated hotel is going to be cited at the airport. This hotel is going to be managed internationally. Plazas, so many things are coming with airport city.

“So, if you didn’t understand it before, understand it, that we are not just putting an airport. It will come with a lot of things that will provide jobs for our people that will move the economy forward and give our people a new lease of life”, the Governor said.

He also acknowledged opposition from some members of the host community but attributed it to a lack of understanding of the project’s benefits.

“I am aware that some of your sons have been against citing the airport here. It is because they don’t understand. There is no way they would be against something that will lift this community.

“So, my message to you is that when you go back, those who are from this community. We are not interested in fighting with them, even though we will win them.

“Even if they go to international court of justice, we will still win them. Do you know why? The land belongs to the government and the person that has authority to take the land or give it is the government,” he added.

Earlier, the Acting State Chairman of the Labour Party, Sir Nwaeze Otti, said the defectors were drawn from across the three local government areas of Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South and Osisioma.

He noted that their decision to join the Labour party was informed by the Governor’s performance, adding that the present administration has placed Abia on a “developmental pedestal” and changed the narrative of governance.

In his remarks, the Chief of Staff to the Governor and host of the event, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described the mass defection as unprecedented, noting that the area had traditionally been a stronghold of opposition parties.

“These people from Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South and Osisioma coming together and to declare with one voice that they are supporting the Governor come 2027 is a demonstration of vote of confidence in his performance within the past close to three years now”, Ajagba said.

Speaking on behalf of the new entrants, Elder Dr GOC Nnaji, a former PDP Chairman in Isiala Ngwa North, said the decision to defect was driven by the positive changes witnessed in the state.

“I want to assure you that we are doing what we do with all sincerity. As the immediate past PDP chairman of Isiala Ngwa North, it wasn’t a very easy decision to take.

“We will not disappoint you. We will complement your efforts. We will join all the old members of Labour Party to add value to the party.

“I want to assure you that 2027 is going to be a landslide victory for you. If your election ended two days after the one that happened in 2023, I want to assure you that by 2 p.m. February 2027, all of us will be coasting to the residence”, Dr Nnaji stated.

Also speaking, Chief Ncheta Omerekpe and Barr. Onyebuchi Ememanka attributed their defection to what they described as the Governor’s exceptional performance, expressing confidence that he deserves re-election in 2027.

They maintained that the growing influx of stakeholders into the Labour Party was a reflection of the administration’s achievements, describing the forthcoming election as “a fight between light and darkness”, with “light” expected to prevail.

A symbolic “handshake across the Niger” unfolded on Friday, as Dr Ngozi Otti, youngest sister of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, traditionally married her heartthrob, Mr Ileri Adeniji from Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a colourful ceremony at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia.

The ceremony which attracted family members, political associates and dignitaries from across the country, was filled with joy, prayers and emotional tributes.

In an emotional address, Governor Otti recalled the difficult period following the death of their mother, revealing how the family struggled to keep Ngozi, the youngest child, going during that time.

The Governor paid glowing tribute to those who stood by the family, particularly acknowledging the role played by his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, whom he described as Ngozi’s “second mother”.

He commended her for rising to the occasion by taking responsibility for the bride’s upbringing, including relocating her to Lagos and ensuring she received proper care and education.

Governor Otti however, stressed that the ceremony was one of celebration rather than mourning.

“The story will be told another time, but by the time my mother left, the young lady by my right (the bride) was like the handbag of my mother, being the last one.

“We struggled to keep her alive because she wanted to go with her mother. I’m sure she remembers that.

“But then a young woman (Mrs Priscilla Otti) rose up to the responsibility and took her, moved her from Aba, her family house, brought her to Lagos, put her in a boarding school in Lagos and every weekend she was there to cater for her.

“So her second mother is the woman seated by my left. I want to use this opportunity to publicly thank her for rising to the occasion.

“Today is not a day for weeping because weeping had endured for a night and joy had come in the morning. Today is not for weeping, today is for happiness”, the Governor said.

He prayed for the couple, asking God to bless their union with children, success and prosperity, expressing confidence that their marriage was already divinely ordained.

Governor Otti also appreciated guests for attending the ceremony despite the significance of Good Friday in the Christian calendar and prayed that God would reward their sacrifices with blessings, protection and victory over life’s challenges.

In his remarks, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, described the marriage as a bridge between the South-East and the South-West, noting that it would strengthen ties in culture, commerce and politics.

Sen.Umahi declared blessings upon the couple and their families and expressed confidence that the union would usher in prosperity and divine favour.

He added that the marriage would stand as a symbol of unity, praying that every challenge the couple might encounter would already have solutions waiting for them.

Also speaking, the wife of the Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti prayed for peace, joy, fruitfulness and abundant blessings in the couple’s new home, expressing optimism that they would surpass the achievements of their parents and continue to enjoy God’s grace.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Nweze Roy Umahi, described the union as a fusion of two rich cultural heritages, noting that it symbolised a true “handshake across the Niger” between the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic groups.

He said the marriage marked the coming together of the Adeniji and Otti families as one, urging both families and friends to give the couple the necessary support to build a strong and enduring home.

“There should be no third-party interference in the marriage of Ngozi and Ileri. Allow them to grow together, and allow them to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes”, he advised.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has urged members of the Abia State Shippers Association to promptly report cases of harassment, illegal sealing of warehouses and extortion to relevant government agencies, as part of efforts to end criminality and strengthen law and order in the state.

Governor Otti stated this on Thursday while receiving members of the Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Olo Onuma, at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor who was reacting to complaints by the Association, reiterated his administration’s resolve to eliminate extortion and other forms of lawlessness

He noted that the State Government would not tolerate acts capable of undermining economic activities and public confidence.

Governor Otti expressed concern over the alleged extortion by hoodlums and individuals posing as security operatives, describing it as the first formal report of such incidents brought before him adding that it would be thoroughly investigated, with all those involved arrested and made to face the provisions of the law.

“There is a government here, any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately.

“One of the major things we have achieved here is to restore law and order, whoever you are, you must respect the law. We do not tolerate extortion, self-help or lawlessness in any form.

“This matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law”, he said.

Governor Otti directed his Chief of Staff to ensure that the allegations were thoroughly investigated and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence.

He maintained that the majority of Abia residents appreciates the State Government’s efforts in promoting the rule of law, respect for human rights and equal opportunities, assuring that his administration would continue to act in the best interest of the people.

On the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project, the Governor said that the project remains a strategic initiative but must be economically viable to attract patronage.

According to him, the absence of affordable and efficient transport infrastructure, particularly rail connectivity, poses a challenge to the project’s success.

“You can build it,(Dry Port ) but if it does not make economic sense to the businessmen who will use it, nobody will patronise it.

“Until we deal with rail transport and access logistics, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results”, he said. 

Governor Otti noted that traders and importers would naturally gravitate towards routes and facilities that minimise cost and delivery time.

Earlier, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abia State Shippers Association, Chief Olo Onuma, commended the Governor for what he described as remarkable achievements within a short period in office.

Chief Onuma, however, appealed for urgent government intervention in reviving the Abia Inland Dry Port project, stressing its potential to boost international trade and create employment opportunities.

“We urge your Excellency to bring your Midas touch to bear in this Abia State Inland Dry Port Project.

“The realisation of this dry port project will enormously enhance our international trade, increase employment within the state and of course leave further footprints of your in the sands of time here in Abia”, he said.

He decried the growing activities of hoodlums and alleged extortionists, claiming that members of the association, including artisans, fabric dealers, and shoe and bag makers, have suffered significant losses.

“Unfortunately, Your Excellency, a new gang of these extortionists have emerged and they are colluding with some government officials to cause havoc.

“They are extorting money from our members at our warehouse, offices and when we are offloading our cargoes.

“Specifically, these extortionists have engaged personnel from Standard Organisation Nigeria hiding behind the organisation to perpetrate their dubious activities.

“Furthermore, the extortionists also wait at the Army Brigade within the state, and arranges for soldiers to perpetrate the illegality”, he alleged.

Chief Onuma called on the State government to expedite action in tackling the menace, particularly in Aba, and urged greater awareness of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to enable local manufacturers tap into export opportunities.

He explained that the trade framework allows eligible Sub-Saharan African countries to export manufactured goods, especially garments, to the United States on favourable terms.

The Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria, Ms Sharon Dimanche, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for his “excellent leadership”, clear vision for economic transformation, job creation and inclusive growth.

Ms. Dimanche gave the commendation on Thursday, when she led officials of the organisation on a courtesy visit to the Governor at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The IOM Chief of Mission said her interactions across Nigeria showed a rare consensus about Governor Otti’s leadership style and impact.

“I have moved around in several states, what I get to hear from every person that I interact with is that you’re one of those very, very special governors in this country. 

“Everybody are all in one line acknowledging and appreciating your leadership. Under your guidance, we have seen a very, very strong vision for economic development, transformation, job creation, and inclusive growth”, she stated.

The IOM Chief explained that her visit was to review progress on earlier engagements, propose new areas of collaboration and seek the Governor’s guidance on priority areas requiring accelerated delivery.

Ms Dimanche while providing updates from her previous engagements, disclosed that Abia State, in collaboration with IOM, has made significant strides in key areas, including the establishment of a state task force on human trafficking, scheduled for inauguration on April 13.

On diaspora engagement, she praised the establishment of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, adding that IOM had already commenced an institutional capacity needs assessment which will guide capacity-building efforts scheduled for April.

Ms Dimanche further disclosed that about 800 returnees had so far been supported through technical and vocational education training as well as reintegration assistance by the organisation adding that the next phase would focus on linking the beneficiaries to job markets for meaningful economic engagement.

She also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen data-driven governance through the establishment of a multi-stakeholder data management framework.

The IOM Chief identified three strategic areas for partnership with the State Government which include leveraging the diaspora as a driver of development through structured investment platforms, skills transfer and enterprise support.

She proposed a tripartite funding model involving the State, Private Sector and Diaspora Community and emphasised strengthening value chains and enterprise development, particularly in Aba’s industrial ecosystem, through improved access to finance, market linkages and skills alignment with industry needs.

“The goal is to position Aba as a competitive production and export hub, capable of creating jobs at scale”, she said.

According to Ms Dimanche, the third focus area centres on community resilience and workforce stabilisation, targeting vulnerable groups, youth and returnees through cooperative-based livelihood programmes and pathways to sustainable employment.o

She stressed that these interventions would create a “reinforcing cycle” of job creation, investment growth and social stability which aligns with the Governor’s development agenda.

Ms Dimanche reaffirmed IOM’s readiness to support the state through large-scale programme implementation, technical assistance and resource mobilisation frameworks, including trust funds.

The IOM Chief proposed steps, including identifying priority areas, appointing a state focal point, and setting up a joint technical team to develop actionable programmes.

“IOM stands ready to support the state in accelerating your priority initiatives to deliver visible, measurable results, quickly, with efficiency, and at scale”, she added.

Responding, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic transformation, inclusive growth and improved social services as key strategies to curb poverty and encourage reverse migration.

The Governor recalled earlier discussions with the IOM on migration trends, noting that many people leave in search of better opportunities, sometimes based on unrealistic expectations.

According to the Governor, the real solution reverse migration lies in creating an enabling environment anchored on transparency, fairness, justice and equity, stressing that migration should ultimately serve as a pathway out of poverty.

He identified access to quality healthcare as a major driver of migration, explaining that people are more likely to relocate if better medical services are available elsewhere.

Governor Otti added that the State has strengthened its primary healthcare system to the point where between 80 and 85 per cent of health needs could be addressed at that level, supported by improved infrastructure, equipment and qualified personnel.

On economic and social development, the Governor highlighted efforts to make the State more livable and productive, noting that Nigeria’s large population presents a significant market for locally made goods.

The Governor also pointed to the success of free education, which doubled school enrollment and led to the recruitment of thousands of teachers, alongside improved welfare and extended retirement age.

He expressed readiness to partner with IOM on funding and strategic projects, including the proposed Medical City and Airport project, noting that such collaborations would enhance investor confidence and attract development partners.

AbIa State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has assured the people that his administration would accelerate the pace of governance as it approaches its fourth year in office, noting that the government remains committed to delivering tangible results.

Governor Otti who stated this on Thursday when he attended the Chrism Mass of the CKC Aba, assured that the coming phase of his administration would witness intensified efforts across key sectors.

The Governor cited the ongoing CKC water scheme as a key project nearing completion and revealed that the project is about “80–90 per cent completed” and would soon begin supplying water to residents.

“We will even increase the tempo as we go into the fourth year. You ain’t seen nothing yet. We still have a lot to do.

“By next month, I’ll complete the CKC water project and water will start running. I want you to open your tap in your kitchen, and water will be running”, he said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic participation, urging citizens, particularly young people who have turned 18, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

Governor Otti who issued a stern warning against a planned protest in Aba, allegedly being orchestrated by a small group seeking to incite unrest in the state, urged residents to avoid participating in the protest.

According to the Governor, intelligence reports indicated that certain individuals had already prepared placards and were mobilising outsiders to stage a protest aimed at causing disaffection with the intent to provoke conflict that could lead to violence.

He stressed that although the government remains committed to lawful conduct, it would not hesitate to act decisively against threats to public peace.

“Let us warn everybody. If anyone tries that, he may end up somewhere he did not plan to”, he Otti cautioned.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement he received from the Catholic Bishop of AbA, His Lordship, Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, during the Chrism Mass, describing it as both unexpected and deeply significant.

The Governor also acknowledged the sustained support of the Church and praised the clergy for their spiritual leadership, particularly commending priests who renewed their vows during the ceremony.

He assured the congregation that his administration would continue to justify the confidence reposed in it.

Earlier, the Bishop of Aba Diocese, the Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, used the opportunity to endorse Governor Otti for the 2027 general elections, expressed confidence that his achievements would continue to speak for him.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Wednesday joined Roman Catholic faithfuls across the world to celebrate the Chrism Mass, a significant liturgical rite marking the Holy Week in the Christian calendar.

The Chrism Mass, observed in Catholic dioceses globally, is a solemn ceremony during which bishops consecrate sacred oils such the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and the consecration of the Sacred Chrism used in administering key sacraments throughout the year.

It is celebrated by bishops alongside priests of their dioceses and symbolises unity, service and spiritual renewal within the Church.

In his remarks, at the Mater Dei Catholic Church Umuahia, Governor Otti, expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life and for seeing the Christian faithfuls through the Lenten season.

“I want to join the priests and everyone to celebrate God for seeing us through the whole Lenten season that is about to end and also Easter that will be in a few days time”, the Governor said.

While reflecting on the 2023 electoral year, Governor Otti described the events that ushered his administration into power as extraordinary, calling the transition a “miracle” and cautioning against forces seeking to reverse the gains achieved.

He stressed that civic responsibility remains critical to sustaining the progress achieved by his administration.

The Governor therefore urged eligible residents to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing it as the surest safeguard against a return to past governance failures.

“It just reminds us that what God did here in 2023 is a miracle. You know, when things like this happen, some people will not be happy and they will want to do everything to take you back to where you are coming from, also known as Egypt. 

“But it is for us to say we will not go back to Egypt. The only way you can guarantee against going back to Egypt is your PVC. That is the only message I have for you today”, he added.

Governor Otti further noted that divine intervention must be complemented by individual effort and tasked those yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing registration process.

“Once you have done your own, you know God will do his own. But if you sleep, God cannot do for you what you can do for yourself,” the Governor said.

He expressed appreciation to the presiding Bishop for the opportunity to address the congregation and wished Christians a joyful Easter celebration.

Earlier in his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Father Michael Kalu Ukpong explained that the mass centres on the blessing of oils used in Church sacraments and the commemoration of the institution of the priesthood.

The Bishop noted that all sacraments derive their strength from the death and resurrection of Christ and urged the faithful to engage in sober reflection.

He also cautioned the Church against indiscriminately accepting “anointing oils” from individuals who claim to be servants of God, stressing that the performance of miracles is not, in itself, proof of genuine divine calling.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has directed all public officers in the state to comply fully with the Code of Conduct requirements, particularly asset declaration, warning that non-compliance would not be tolerated.

Governor Otti gave the directive on Tuesday, while receiving the South-East Zonal Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Mr Akinfolarin Feyishola, and his delegation during a courtesy visit in his office at Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA.

The Governor who stressed that compliance with the Code of Conduct is mandatory, further directed the Secretary to the State Government, Mr, Emmanuel Meribole to ensure strict compliance among all public office holders.

He described the Code of Conduct Bureau as “a necessary part of our system, the democratic system,” stressing that adherence to its provisions is “a minimum standard for people who want to play in the public sector space”.

“When I hear that some people have not visited the office, or have not complied, it’s strange, so, SSG, please, I’d like you to also lend your weight to this, to ensure that everyone who should comply complies”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor also commended the Bureau’s move towards digitalisation as a step in line with global best practices, noting that his administration is already leveraging technology in governance.

He assured the delegation of the state government’s support, including upgrading the Bureau’s office in Umuahia and addressing their logistic needs.

Earlier, the Zonal Director of the CCB, South-East, Mr Akinfolarin Feyishola expressed concern over low compliance levels among some political appointees and a significant number of career civil servants in the state, regarding asset declaration.

“We still have a few political office holders that are yet to declare their assets, and a large chunk of career officers that have not declared their assets,” he said.

He explained that the Bureau, which oversees Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, is responsible for investigations, prosecution, intelligence gathering and recovery of proceeds of crime beyond the capacity of state offices.

The Zonal Director proposed a comprehensive sensitisation programme for public officers in Abia to improve awareness and compliance with the Code of Conduct for public officers.

“We want to propose that Your Excellency approve for us to do a kind of enlightenment for all the public officers in the state on the Code of Conduct for public officers’ implications for non-compliance”, he said.

Mr Feyishola further revealed that the Bureau is transitioning to a fully digital asset declaration system and warned that failure to comply with asset declaration requirements could lead to prosecution.

The CCB Zonal Director added that public officers must download, complete and submit forms through the Bureau’s website as an interim measure.

He urged the State Government to enforce compliance by linking asset declaration to employment, promotion and remuneration processes and appealed for support in upgrading the Bureau’s office as well as the provision of an official vehicle.

Governor Alex Otti of AbIa State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to enhance engineering standards and infrastructure development across the State.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving a COREN delegation led by its Registrar, Engr. Prof Austin Uche, during a courtesy visit at his office in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

The Governor commended the Council for its professionalism and pledged sustained partnership with the body, noting that adherence to engineering standards remained critical to the durability of infrastructure in the state.

He said the government would consider the council’s request for logistics support, including the provision of an operational vehicle for its State monitoring team, within available budgetary provisions.

“We will explore ways of supporting your request within the limits of our budget”, Governor Otti said.

He also directed the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority to inspect and assess the condition of the road leading to COREN’s state office for possible intervention.

Governor Otti added that the State’s direct labour agency, manned by competent engineers, possesses the capacity to handle the rehabilitation of the access road efficiently.

Earlier, Engr Prof Uche reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Abia State Government to promote engineering standards and infrastructure development.

He commended the Governor’s support for the engineering profession, noting that COREN, established by law in 1970, remaines committed to regulating engineering training, education and practice nationwide.

Uche recalled the inauguration of the Abia State Technical Committee and Expatriate Monitoring Committee on February 27, 2025, describing them as key platforms for engineering regulation, monitoring and enforcement.

According to him, collaboration between COREN and State Governments is vital to ensuring sustainable infrastructure through proper maintenance and strict adherence to standards.

The registrar also praised the presence of qualified engineers in the Abia State Executive Council, including the Deputy Governor, who is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and urged the State Government to sustain the trend.

He noted that strong engineering representation in governance had contributed significantly to development in countries such as China.

Uche appealed to the Governor to provide an operational vehicle for the state monitoring team to enhance effective oversight of infrastructure projects.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has approved, in principle, the takeover of the state-owned Afro Beverages facility by Nepal Group to drive its rehabilitation and enhance economic productivity.

Governor Otti made this known, on Tuesday , when he received the Group Managing Director of Nepal Group, Mrs Ngozi Ekeoma, and her team at his office in Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA, where they formally presented a proposal to take over and revamp the industry.

The Governor who welcomed their proposal, affirmed that his administration’s priority is to create an enabling environment for private sector led growth rather than operate business enterprises directly.

“When we made the acquisition (of Afro Beverages) the whole idea was not to run it.

“We don’t even want to run business. We want to create an environment for businesses to run well, thrive, make money, create jobs, improve GDP, reduce poverty”, he said.

Governor Otti while declaring support for the proposal in-principle for Nepal Group to take over Afro Beverages, said that the State would retain only a minority stake of no more than 20 per cent.

“I’m very happy to offer it (Afro beverages) to you. What I have said was that we just want a small percentage, no more than 20 percent, you offload the remaining 80%.

“I think it’s also important that you are in partnership. My colleagues who are directly involved have also looked at your initial teaser”, the Governor added.

He further disclosed that despite interest from foreign investors, the State had prioritised partnership with Nepal Group.

Earlier, the Group Managing Director of Nepal Group, Mrs Ngozi Ekeoma, while reiterating her company’s request to acquire the State owned Afro Beverages Facility, explained that the company had completed due diligence.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, Mrs Ekeoma said Nepal Group was diversifying into manufacturing as a strategy to drive job creation and industrial growth.

“I’m here again to ask for AFRO BEVERAGES because I’ve been there, I’ve done my numbers, I’ve also done both the due diligence and the numbers for it and today we are here again to make a proposal and hopefully the state will accept for us to take over that facility and revamp it.

“I believe that I’ve done a lot of this sort of thing over and over again and I trust that you will trust us to handle that factory.

“We think that manufacturing is the way to go because that’s what creates jobs and for us, that is what we need to do, bring back all the industries back to our State”, she stated.

She also highlighted improvements in the State’s business environment, particularly in power and infrastructure, stressing that high diesel costs had previously hindered industrial operations.

Mrs Ekeoma thanked the State Government for improving road infrastructure to support her company’s detergent plant in Ukwa West and highlighted challenges with access roads to her agricultural project in Igbere and appealed for government intervention.

“I mentioned to you that I already have a project… the four tonner per hour detergent plant that we’re building in Ukwa West and you promise that you’re going to fix the roads. So I want to use this opportunity to say thank you,” she said.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Industry and SMEs, Mazi Mike Akpara, also supported the proposal, noting that Afro Beverages is a facility capable of quick turnaround.

In a vote of thanks, the Regional Director for Southern Africa Region of Nepal Group, Mr Nnamdi Obiagwu, assured that the company would deploy its resources and expertise to ensure the success of the project.

“All the resources and capacity that Nepal has, both human and capital, will be put into making this project a success for all of us”, he said.

The Abia State Government has approved the recruitment of an additional 50 nurses, complementing the 500 already engaged under its ongoing Human Resource Programme for the employment of medical personnel across state-owned hospitals.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu noted that the latest approval brings the total number of nurses employed by the current administration to 550.

The Commissioner further revealed that the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme has so far enrolled 157,462 beneficiaries, describing the figure as a significant milestone in the State Government’s drive to expand access to affordable healthcare while providing financial protection for residents.

He also announced progress in the accreditation process of the State College of Nursing Sciences, stating that the institution recently received a visit from the National Board for Technical Education for the accreditation of its National Diploma programme.

According to him, the board commended the State Government for the extensive remodelling of the college’s facilities as well as the quality of its training programmes.

In addition, the Commissioner disclosed that the Abia State Government is collaborating with MedShare, a United States-based organisation, to train local technicians in the repair and maintenance of medical equipment, a move aimed at ensuring the sustainability of healthcare delivery in the state.

He recalled that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently donated an MRI scanner valued at $1.5 million in recognition of the significant transformation within the state’s health sector.

Prince Kanu explained that the equipment, would be installed at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba, to enhance diagnostic services and complement existing state-of-the-art medical facilities.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Ogbonnaya Uche, announced that the Abia State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with AMPA, will organise a six-day free medical outreach from 12 to 17 April.

Prof Uche stated that two facilities particularly, the Aba General Hospital and Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, have been designated for the programme.

He urged residents to take full advantage of the initiative, which will feature the services of highly trained and internationally recognised doctors, surgeons and ophthalmologists.

The Commissioner added that general surgeries and most consultations will take place at Aba General Hospital, while eye care services, including specialised surgeries, will be conducted at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia.

He noted that the programme will also include training sessions for healthcare workers to further strengthen the human resource capacity of the state’s health sector.

In a move to deepen its sanitation drive, the Abia State Government has mandated the installation of waste bins in all commercial vehicles, with enforcement set to commence on April 1, 2026.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu said the directive was part of ongoing efforts by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) to support, promote and enhance the cleanliness of the state, noting that the initiative would require all commercial vehicles to provide waste bins for passenger use.

The Commissioner added that the policy would be backed by strict enforcement, stressing that the State Government remains committed to sustaining the sanitation gains recorded across the state.

He highlighted the achievements of ASEPA, pointing out that the Agency has continued to receive commendations within and outside Nigeria for transforming the environmental outlook of the State, particularly Aba, the commercial nerve centre.

Prince Kanu noted that Aba, once widely described as one of the dirtiest cities in the country, has been repositioned into one of the cleanest urban centres, in line with Governor Otti’s declaration of a state of emergency on waste management at the inception of his administration.

The Commissioner cited the recent visit of the Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Pastor Paul Enenche, who publicly expressed admiration for the improved cleanliness across the state.

“He (Pastor Enenche) used the opportunity of that programme to express his amazement at the level of cleanliness he noticed across the state, which, of course, was not the case about three years earlier”, Prince Kanu said.

The Commissioner further revealed that ASEPA had intensified its regulatory activities, including monitoring and enforcing environmental standards among businesses and industries.

He said that several premises had been sealed for violating sanitation regulations, adding that “the closures were sustained until the offending companies remedied those infractions”.

Prince Kanu also disclosed that the Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal has undertaken significant gully erosion control and flood management projects across the state.

He listed intervention areas to include Amiyi and Amaogudu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, as well as Elugwu Nkata in Umuahia North and Iyama, Iberenta in Ikwuano, where reclamation works have been completed.

“There are also other erosion control works being handled by the Ministry through direct labour works that they are nearing completion.

“These efforts speak to the State Government’s agenda to provide solutions to instances of environmental degradation through erosions across the state”, he said.

On social development, the commissioner announced that the State would mark the 2026 International Women’s Day on March 31 in Umuahia, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti.

He said the event, themed “Give to Gain,” would encourage philanthropic activities, particularly among women, to support the less privileged in society.

Reacting to the resurgence of refuse dumps in parts of the state, the General Manager of ASEPA, Mazi Ogbonnia Okereke announced that the agency would commence full enforcement of its “Operation Show Your Waste Bin” initiative from April 1, targeting all commercial vehicles.

The ASEPA GM stressed that the Agency’s monitoring network is fully operational across the state, warning that there would be no safe haven for violators.

He also cautioned residents against both unauthorised and indiscriminate dumping of refuse and urged strict compliance with established environmental sanitation standards.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the women of Umuda-Isingwu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, recently came out in their numbers all dressed in black attires, decrying how major parts of their lands have become habitation for Fulani herders.

In a peaceful protest to Government House, Umuahia, the women were seen carrying placards with inscriptions, such as, “Our Land is not for sale, Our women use the land for farming, we don’t have any other land, food is more important than housing, Gov Otti, save our children from going hungry”. While others read “Our children are dying of hunger, Chaka Chukwumerije, stop defying the voice of the people “.

Addressing the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribole, who received the aggrieved women on behalf of the government, the women, led by Mrs. Nkechi Nnodimele, recounted the origin of the crisis.

According to her, in 2018, some individuals allegedly approached the community over a parcel of land located along Ubani Ibeku, claiming it would be developed into an estate.

She explained that the proposal was rejected by the community, particularly because the land serves as a major source of livelihood for the women, who depend on it for farming activities.

Nnodimele alleged that despite the rejection, the land was forcefully taken and has since remained undeveloped, and eventually becoming a settlement area for Fulani herders. She further lamented that recent developments have worsened the situation, as another portion of the land currently under cultivation by the women, was reportedly bulldozed, destroying crops including cassava.

“Our women depend on that land for survival. What was planted had not matured before everything was destroyed. We have no other land for farming or for future use. If we keep quiet, it means Umuda Isingwu no longer has land”, she said.

Responding, the SSG, Emmanuel Meribole, commended the women for their peaceful conduct and assured them that their grievances would be addressed. He noted that the matter is already known to the Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije.

Also speaking, the SSG disclosed that the Umuahia North Mayor, Smart Ihuoma, equally assured that he would engage relevant stakeholders on the matter, promising to visit the community within one week to assess the situation and provide solutions.

He stated further that they were already in contact with the community’s President General and reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

The SSG also promised to brief Governor Alex Otti on the matter for prompt action.

Our reporter gathered that the women later visited the Umuahia North Local Government Council to see the Mayor of the area.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has called on Christians not to shy away from political participation, stressing that active civic engagement remains vital to sustaining good governance and societal progress.

Governor Otti made the call on Sunday, during the 28th Anniversary celebration of Zam Jehovah Night themed “Breaking Barriers”, at the Assemblies of God Church, 123 Tenant Road, in Aba.

The Governor called on residents to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards through the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) of the Independent National Electoral Commission; ahead of the forthcoming elections.

He warned that apathy could allow leadership to fall into the wrong hands and stressed that active participation during the 2027 general elections remains key to sustaining the state’s ongoing development.

“It is important to recognize that another election is approaching next year and many people here may not have registered to vote.

“In the past, some believed politics should be avoided, but we must remember that power belongs to God; therefore if believers stay away, others will take charge.

“If you have not registered, now is the time to do so and for those who have registered, ensure you come out to vote.he only way to sustain the good work happening in Abia is through your votes”, he said.

Reflecting on his political journey, Governor Otti said that his eventual emergence in 2023 was a fulfilment of divine promise, despite unsuccessful attempts in previous election cycles.

The Governor encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast in pursuing their aspirations, noting that persistence would ultimately yield results.

“It has now been three years since March 2023, when God changed our story. When God speaks, it must come to pass.

“We tried in 2015 and 2019, and many advised us to give up. But we held on to the promise in Ezekiel 21:27: ‘I will overturn, overturn, overturn it, until it is given to him whose right it is’.

“That message is for everyone, no matter what you are believing God for, do not give up; even after multiple setbacks, remain steadfast because at the right time, it will come to pass,” he said.

Governor Otti who congratulated the church on its 28th anniversary programme, reaffirmed his commitment to continued engagement with the congregation.

The Governor expressed gratitude for the prayers and support of the people, noting that the majority of Abians were satisfied with the performance of his administration.

He commended the congregation for their faith and continued support for his administration and prayed for the fulfilment of their requests to God

Earlier, the Senior Pastor, Assemblies of God church, Rev Ogboso Ejindu, described Governor Otti as a hardworking and people-oriented leader who has broken long-standing barriers in Aba.

Rev Ejindu said that the governor’s focus on tangible development rather than fanfare had led to visible improvements in the city.

He described criticisms of the Otti-led administration’s ongoing urban renewal efforts as noise, noting that residents appreciates the changes and urged the governor to remain consistent.

Amid growing speculation about a possible defection, Governor Alex Otti of AbIa State has firmly stated that he remains committed to the Labour Party and has no intention of leaving the party.

Speaking during the March edition of his monthly Media Parley tagged “Governor Otti Speaks”, Governor Otti said that the party’s challenges had been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) complying fully with the court’s ruling.

The Governor who reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party, stressed that he has no plans to defect to any other political platform in the foreseeable future adding that the party is now stronger and better positioned for future elections.

He said; “The Labour Party had a problem, but that problem has been resolved by the Supreme Court. And INEC has also respected the decision of the Supreme Court. So maybe you haven’t followed the recent events in the party.

“The party is back on its feet and strong. As we speak, registration is going on and those who haven’t registered should please register. You still have a window to register.

“We will be having our congresses leading all the way to convention any time from now. So, in the light of this superior information, the question about defecting does not arise”.

On security, Governor Otti cautioned against profiling criminals along ethnic or regional lines, stressing that criminality should not be associated with any particular group.

He noted that perpetrators of crimes, including housebreaking, are sometimes locals, including relatives and acquaintances, rather than outsiders.

“Profiling herdsmen as coming from a particular section of the country may not be very correct.

“We do not discriminate whether you are from the North, South, East or West. If you break the law, we will treat you as an offender and if you do well, we will reward you as a good citizen”.

He further emphasised that the present administration runs an inclusive government, pointing out that individuals from across the country have been recruited into government positions based on merit.

The Governor urged residents with credible security information to report directly to relevant authorities, assuring that such reports would be treated promptly.

On the proposed establishment of a state police force, in line with federal directives, Governor Otti noted that his administration is making the necessary preparations and would implement the initiative in due course.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced a comprehensive package of incentives for outstanding graduates of Abia State University (ABSU), including automatic employment for first-class graduates.

The incentives also include postgraduate scholarships for the outstanding graduates up to doctoral level and a N200 million entrepreneurship fund to 100 graduates with innovative business plans to scale up their businesses.

Governor Otti made the announcement on Friday during the 30th to 32nd combined convocation ceremony of the University, noting that the measures were part of deliberate efforts to reposition education as the cornerstone of the state’s long-term development strategy.

The Governor announced that all first-class graduates across the three convocations would be retained as graduate assistants, subject to the completion of their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He added that the opportunity would also extend to the best graduating students in each department with a minimum CGPA of 4.25.

Governor Otti also revealed that first-class graduates from the institution would receive postgraduate scholarships in any public University of their choice within the country up to doctorate degree level.

According to him, 100 exceptional graduates would be absorbed into the State Civil Service to fill critical gaps, particularly in Education, ICT, Statistics and Health-related fields.

“I am glad to announce that approval has been given to the University Management to immediately commence the process of retaining all the first-class graduates and when I say all, I mean all the first-class graduates within the three convocations as Graduate Assistants subject to the completion of their National Youth Service.

“This privilege shall also be extended to the best graduating students across the entire department so long as the cumulative grade point average is up to 4.25.

“Additionally, all first-class graduates of the University across the three convocations shall be awarded postgraduate scholarships to any public university of their choice within the country up to doctorate degree level.

“Of course, you know that this is subject to the acceptance of the teaching offer that we have already made. Furthermore, the State Head of Service has been directed to identify immediate gaps in the civil service structure that we can fill with 100 exceptional graduates from the three sets.

“Special consideration shall be given to graduates with degrees in Education, Computer Sciences, Statistics, Health and Medical Sciences and other areas of critical need. Again, this shall be subject to the completion of the NYSC programme”, the Governor further explained.

He revealed that the State has earmarked N200 million to support up to 100 graduates with viable business ideas, and stressed that proposals in Agriculture, ICT and clean energy would receive priority consideration.

“Graduates with bankable and scalable business ideas shall be required to send their proposals electronically to oggh@abiastate.gov.ng on or before the 30th day of April. Successful applicants would benefit from funding, training and mentorship”, he said.

Governor Otti announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to the overall best graduating student, Mrs Oluchi Etusim of the Department of Educational Planning, who graduated with an outstanding CGPA of 4.81.

The Governor commended her resilience as both a mother and a scholar, describing her achievement as a proof that nothing should hold anyone down and urged other students to remain focused and strive for excellence.

He urged the graduating students to remain resilient in the face of post-graduation challenges, including possible unemployment and career setbacks.

“It may be tough at first but whatever happens, stand firm in faith. Never give up. Never surrender to a fate you do not deserve”, he advised.

Governor Otti reminded them that a university education confers both privilege and responsibility, urging them to apply their knowledge and skills towards societal development.

In her address, the Chancellor of the University, Mrs Catherine Ifejika, commended Governor Otti for his support and transformative strides in the institution, noting that his commitment to educational excellence reflects a clear understanding that education shapes future leaders and preserves societal values.

The Pro-Chancellor, Dr Agwu U. Agwu, congratulated the graduands and honorary award recipients, describing their achievements as a testament to perseverance, excellence and the enduring value of knowledge.

He further observed that the Governor’s interventions have significantly advanced the University’s mandate of repositioning itself as a world-class institution and reaffirmed the commitment of the University management to build a dynamic and globally competitive system.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, lauded the Governor for prioritising workers’ welfare, particularly the clearance of salary arrears owed by previous administrations, pointing out that staff now receive their salaries promptly before the end of each month, a development he said has greatly boosted staff morale.

Prof Okeudo listed key ongoing projects under the Otti administration to include the construction of a new Faculty of Law, 5,000-capacity male and female hostels, internal road networks, solar-powered street lighting, and the provision of engineering equipment for the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic departments, among others.

The convocation recorded 10,255 graduands from three academic sessions, of whom 69 emerged with exceptional first-class distinctions across diverse disciplines.

Honorary degrees were conferred on distinguished Nigerians, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; the Chairman/CEO of Air Peace Limited, Dr Allen Onyema; and the Group Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries, Dr Stella Chinyelu Okoli.

Governor Otti later laid the foundation for the reconstruction of the ABSU international Secondary School.
