Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has officially declared the 2026 medical mission of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) open, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare as a driver of economic growth and social wellbeing.

The 2026 medical mission organised by ANPA, in collaboration with the Abia State Government focuses on expanding access to free, quality healthcare as well as strengthening the state’s health system through partnerships and capacity building.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony on Tuesday at the Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasized that his administration’s development agenda is anchored on improving the welfare of the people through deliberate investments in critical sectors, particularly healthcare.

The Governor reiterated that his administration does not separate healthcare from economic advancement, explaining that sustained investment in the sector is essential for productivity and long-term prosperity.

He stressed that infrastructure development must translate into real benefits for citizens, noting that “physical infrastructure projects, whatever the cost, mean nothing if they are not directly connected to our central governance agenda“.

“At the center of our development framework is the holistic welfare of the human population. Everything we have done in the last 35 months, is driven primarily by the hunger to enhance the social and economic experiences of our people.

“We do not make a distinction between health of the people and the prosperity of the economy, for they are one and the same thing.

“Health, as we see it, is also economics because it is tied to the productivity of the population, guides investment decisions, and ultimately promotes long-term household and public sector services”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor commended ANPA for returning to Abia for another round of medical outreach, describing the organisation as a dependable partner in the state’s healthcare transformation efforts.

He expressed confidence that the medical mission would not only provide immediate medical relief to residents but also strengthen the capacity of local health workers through knowledge transfer and exposure to global best practices.

Governor Otti also disclosed that his administration has approved the recruitment of 851 healthcare professionals, with 629 already deployed to various facilities, as part of efforts to address manpower shortages and improve service delivery.

He also revealed plans to institutionalize collaboration with ANPA through a structured framework that would incorporate telemedicine and digital healthcare solutions.

Governor Otti further highlighted improvements in infrastructure, security and environmental services and positioned Abia as an emerging destination for investment in health and other sectors.

He expressed optimism that the medical outreach would have a lasting impact on beneficiaries, noting that participants would depart with heartwarming stories of lives saved, joy restored and renewed faith in humanity.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, said the medical mission aligns with the healthcare reforms of Governor Otti, which include increased funding, infrastructure upgrades and digital health innovations.

Prof Uche noted that the reforms by Governor Otti has significantly improved healthcare utilisation, with a rise in hospital visits across the state in recent years.

He added that the medical outreach would provide free consultations, specialised surgeries and health education, as well as servep as a platform for collaboration, capacity building and strengthening of the state’s healthcare system.

Also speaking, President of ANPA, Dr Cliff Eke, described the initiative as part of diaspora-driven health intervention aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Dr Eke explained that the mission goes beyond medical outreach to include skills transfer, training and long-term system support, adding that the team has assembled a multidisciplinary group of professionals to deliver services across key areas of medicine.

He further disclosed that the programme is part of the National Diaspora Health Impact Initiative, which will be implemented across several states before a national review, noting that telemedicine and continuous engagement with local health workers are central to ensuring sustainability.

In her remarks earlier, the Chairperson of the Medical Mission Committee, Dr Uloaku Ukaegbu, noted that the partnership between the Abia State Government and ANPA has continued to yield significant results, revealing that similar missions in the previous year treated over 15,000 residents and recorded more than 300 surgeries.

According to her, the current exercise has already commenced at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Aba General Hospital, and currently providing eye care, outpatient services and specialised surgeries, while also incorporating a sexual and reproductive health programme for youths.

Abia State Government has launched an accelerated Basic Education Programme designed to compress six years of primary education into three years, as part of efforts to expand access to learning for adults and out-of-school residents.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Prince Kanu, the programme is being implemented by the Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education and is targeted at individuals who were unable to complete their basic education.

The Commissioner urged residents to take advantage of the initiative to obtain their first school-leaving certificate.

“The Abia State Accelerated Basic Education Programme aimed at running the six years primary school curriculum in three years has commenced.

“The Agency for Mass Literacy and Adult and Non-formal Education is responsible for running this programme and wishes that all Abians and residents who could not conclude their basic education should take advantage of this opportunity to sit and obtain their first school-leaving certificate in the State. 

“Abia State happens to be one of the states that is running this programme for those who missed out in their early years and do not have the opportunity to obtain their first school-leaving certificate. 

“So this programme makes it possible for all such people to take advantage of this programme”, he added.

Prince Kanu disclosed that the results of the oral interviews for Batch Two candidates in the teachers’ recruitment exercise, who were shortlisted after the CBT, are currently being compiled, assuring that all successful candidates will be duly notified in due course.

The Commissioner disclosed that over 7,280 candidates scored above 40 per cent in the Computer-Based Test, assuring that the process would remain transparent and merit-driven.

“In line with the standards of the transparent process and the fairness of the recruitment process in the state, everybody will be given a fair chance based on their performance”, he added.

On healthcare, Prince Kanu disclosed that the State has domesticated the Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transport Programme under the Maternal Mortality Initiative (MAMI) in three local government areas of Bende, Obingwa and Ukwa East, which have been identified as having high maternal mortality rates.

“The main objective of the programme is to provide access to emergency care in order to reduce maternal, child and neonatal mortality”, Prince Kanu said.

He further disclosed that Abia State has been selected as one of the beneficiary states of a $250 million World Bank Health Security Grant, attributing the development to ongoing reforms in the sector.

Prince Kanu also noted that there had been no reported cases of major public health diseases such as Lassa fever, Mpox, diphtheria, yellow fever, cholera and rabies during the review period.

He announced the commencement of the 2026 Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), Medical Mission, with plans to deliver no fewer than 1,500 consultations and 100 specialised surgeries to residents across the state.

Prince Kanu said that the exercise would officially begin on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, adding that the opening ceremony would hold at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, by 10 a.m.

The Commissioner explained that consultations and surgeries would take place at Aba General Hospital, while eye care services would be handled at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia, while sexuality and reproductive health services would be provided at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Health, Prof Enoch Uche, described the AbIa/ ANPA initiative as a rare opportunity for residents to access world-class medical services locally.

“Instead of people having to travel to America, you will just travel from Arochukwu and go to Aba to get these services”, Prof Uche said.

He attributed the return of ANPA to Abia within a short period to the present administration’s commitment to healthcare reform and pointed out that beyond treatment, the mission would focus on capacity building for local health workers.

Abia State Government has commenced plans to review and re-gazette autonomous communities across the state as part of efforts to restore order, strengthen grassroots governance and address recurring communal disputes.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Saturday at the JAAC Secretariat in Umuahia during a statewide meeting of Presidents-General of towns and developmental Unions.

The meeting was convened by the State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Prince Nwachukwu said the exercise had become necessary due to the irregularities observed in the existing structure of autonomous communities, noting that the last gazetting was carried out about 11 years ago.

“We are embarking on review of autonomous communities. If we go to our gazettes, as carried out about 11 years ago, when the last gazetting was done, we are overdue, but we are supposed to have re-gazetted by last year because it’s done once every 10 years.

“You see all sorts of operations. You will find instances where one village is gazetted into two autonomous communities.

“You will find instances where one village is in one community but certain kindreds and families are in another community. Those are confusions.

“There are situations where a traditional ruler, in his domain, who is a custodian of an autonomous community, has his village ceeded to another Traditional Ruler.

“So he has become a subject of that Traditional Ruler. Are you aware of those things? Those are operations. So this year we are going to do a regazeting.

“These things call for crisis. There is no week I receive anything less than 50 petitions in my office. None!”, he stated.

The Commissioner explained that the persistent disputes arising from such anomalies informed the establishment of conflict management and mediation centres in all local government areas of the State.

He further announced that the government would institutionalize town and development Unions to ensure proper coordination and accountability at the grassroots level.

“We want to institutionalize town and development Unions. So, you (participants) can find out that your details have been taken. We want to make sure, who the leaders of these town and community development Unions in the various communities are.

“So we want to make sure we are doing documentations. The same kind of thing that is happening with traditional institutions, where two, three, four, five people will go through the process of being elected traditional rulers of their places.

“And then one person will win, the other four will not agree. And everybody, four of them or five of them will go to the local government and insist that they must be received. And all of them are received.

“We are putting a stop to all those for the sake of the progress of our land. So we are creating a statewide database”, he said.

Prince Nwachukwu emphasised that the government has no interest in determining who emerges as President-General or community development chairman, but insisted that due process must be followed.

He described the meeting as a decisive step towards strengthening grassroots governance, noting that town and development Unions have historically driven rural development but have recently been weakened by poor structure, lack of documentation and leadership conflicts.

Prince Nwachukwu who clarified roles within the community leadership system, stated that traditional rulers remain custodians of culture and symbols of unity, while Presidents-General and development Unions leaders serve as administrators and drivers of development.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (rtd.), described the meeting as a novel initiative and stressed that security remains a collective responsibility.

He urged community leaders to take intelligence gathering seriously, noting that effective security depends on timely information sharing.

In their remarks, the Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Afuruobi, and a representative of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Sampson Jinanwa, pledged continued collaboration with development uynions to enhance peace and development at the grassroots.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, said the meeting marked the beginning of a new phase in the state’s efforts to strengthen community governance.

“This engagement has therefore be convened to establish a direct interface between government and the leadership of town and development unions”, she said.

Leaders of various communities, including Dr Greene Nwoha of Oro-Ibere Autonomous Community, Chief Yuccee Ottah Uwah of Abiriba Communal Improvement Union Worldwide, and Hon. Chukwudi Edward Egwuonwu of Ozuitem Community, commended Governor Alex Otti for convening the meeting, describing it as the first of its kind and expressing optimism that it would enhance security, peace and development across the state.

The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), is set to provide free medical services to no fewer than 1,500 residents as part of a five-day medical outreach programme scheduled to commence in the state.

The initiative, which will run from April 13 to April 17, is aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services, including consultations and surgeries, for residents across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, disclosed this at Government House Umuahia on Friday during a press briefing on the planned exercise.

Prof Uche said the outreach aligns with the healthcare vision of Governor Alex Otti, particularly in strengthening partnerships with physicians of Abia origin and other Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora.

According to him, the programme is part of efforts by the State Government to deepen access to affordable and quality healthcare while advancing the goal of universal health coverage.

“As you may recall, health remains one of the priority sectors under the administration of His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti.

“One of the key mandates in the governor’s 11-point agenda is collaboration with physicians of Nigerian and Abia extraction residing abroad to support the delivery of high-quality and affordable healthcare services to our people”, he said.

The Commissioner explained that the governor had, in 2025, directed the Ministry of Health to work with ANPA to organise the 2026 edition of the outreach, following the success of a similar exercise in 2024.

He said the opening ceremony would hold on April 14 at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, at 12 noon, while clinical services would run from April 14 to April 17 at designated centres, including the Abia General Hospital and the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre.

Prof Uche listed the services to be offered to include free medical consultations, general surgeries, gynaecological procedures and eye surgeries.

“We are expecting a team of about 25 doctors from the United States, who will work alongside our local medical personnel.

“Our target is to conduct at least 1,500 medical consultations and up to 100 surgeries within the period”, he said.

The Commissioner urged residents with health challenges, especially those requiring surgical procedures such as fibroid operations and other essential interventions, to take advantage of the opportunity.

He further disclosed that specialist ophthalmologists would also carry out free eye surgeries at the eye unit of the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, and commended the governor for providing the enabling environment and approving funds for logistics and other support services required for the programme.

Prof. Uche said ANPA would contribute medical expertise and consumables, while the State Government would provide operational logistics for the exercise.

He added that the outreach would also feature sexual and reproductive health education for young people, in line with ANPA’s outreach policy, aimed at equipping youths with information for informed life choices.

According to him, another component of the programme would involve the training of 80 health workers on basic life support and emergency response procedures.

“This training is critical in helping frontline health workers manage emergency cases such as cardiac arrest and unconscious patients, especially at peripheral health facilities”, he said.

Prof Uche also announced the commencement of the Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative, a programme designed to promote compassionate care, improved medical ethics and enhanced service delivery across the state’s health system.

He reassured residents that free medical consultations remained open to all, including those who had not undergone prior screening for surgical procedures.

Also speaking, the Coordinator of the Abia ANPA 2026 Medical Outreach, Dr Uloaku Ukaegbu, said all arrangements had been concluded for the exercise.

Dr. Ukaegbu disclosed that over 250 persons had already indicated interest in surgical procedures, adding that the list was currently under review to determine eligible cases.

She said prospective surgical patients would undergo screening and necessary investigations, while blood transfusion support, where required, would be provided free of charge.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Friday said his administration is only at it’s initial stage in the drive to reposition Umuahia as the State Capital through sustained infrastructure development and economic expansion.

Governor Otti stated this at the Umuahia Township Stadium, during a Grand Civic Reception organised in his honour by the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia, comprising Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Ikwuano Local Government Areas.

The Governor highlighted planned development projects, including the construction of a five-star hotel and reiterated his commitment to completing key projects, including the Umuahia Stadium and the Amachara Specialist Hospital, assuring that his administration only initiates projects it is certain to complete.

He assured AbIa residents that ongoing reforms by his administration would permanently reposition the the state capital for sustainable growth adding that the state would not return to the past but continue on a path of transformation.

“The transformation of Umuahia a is at infant stages, it is just starting, we have clearly set out in our mind on what we want Umuahia to look like.

“We are not comparing ourselves with anybody. So when you say you want this place(Umuahia ) to look like Dubai, no, we don’t want to look like Dubai. We want it to look like Umuahia.

“There are still a whole lot of things to do. By the time we are done, I want to assure you that it will never be the same again.

“And you know, at a time when you hit the reset button and you institutionalize good governance and bring dignity back to the people, you don’t even need to talk. It is the people that will tell you that they will never go back to Egypt”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor, disclosed that his administration was finalising arrangements for the construction of a 200 to 250-room five-star hotel in the capital city, noting that the project would enhance tourism and business activities.

He further revealed that the site for the hotel project had already been identified and that a partner agreement would be signed shortly, with a formal groundbreaking expected in the coming weeks.

“I got the draft agreement which I shall sign this weekend to bring in a partner and sign an agreement with a five-star hotel, just like we are doing in Aba, with the Radisson Blu, We are going to do a 200 to 250 room five-star hotel in Umuahia.

“The site has already been identified behind me here. So at the appropriate time in a few weeks when we will do the groundbreaking, we will announce the name of the partner. It’s a name that you know and a name you’ll be very proud of”, he said.

Governor Otti reaffirmed commitment to institutionalising good governance and sustainable development adding that leadership must be rooted in stewardship and service to the people.

He described governance as a sacred responsibility, and pointed out that his administration remains guided by divine direction and public trust.

“We also want to thank God for giving us the privilege, because it’s a privilege to serve our people. I personally see leadership as service, leadership as stewardship.

“Anytime you take away stewardship from leadership, it becomes self-serving. So sometimes you hear politicians tell you that politics is a game of interest. The truth is that the interest they mean is self-interest.

“If it were not self-interest, then politics would be about stewardship. And for us, this is about stewardship”, he said.

Speaking on behalf of members of the Abia State House of Assembly from Ikwuano/Umuahia extraction, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Augustine Okezie, expressed appreciation for the Governor’s developmental strides across the federal constituency, noting that Governor Otti has demonstrated that there is hope in governance.

Also the Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr Chinedum Enwereuzo, who spoke on behalf of his counterparts in Ikwuano and Umuahia North LGAs, said the constituency had never experienced such unprecedented development.

He assured the Governor of the continued support of the people, adding that they were eagerly awaiting the next general election to “repay his good works.”

In their goodwill messages, stakeholders including Chief Uzodinma Okpara, Mr Monday Ubani, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the Federal Commissioner representing Abia at the Federal Character Commission, Chief Victor Ikeji, praised the administration’s performance.

They noted that the Governor had introduced social security support for the elderly and significantly improved healthcare delivery through the retrofitting and equipping of health facilities across the state, a move they said has contributed to improved life expectancy.

The National Secretary of the Labour Party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, while welcoming a former federal legislator, Chief Oluchi Ibeji, alongside his supporters and hundreds of defectors into the party, assured them of equal opportunity and fair treatment within the Labour Party.

In his remarks, the former federal house member representing Ikwuano Umuahia federal constituency, Chief Oluchi Ibeji said Governor Otti’s purposeful leadership has restored hope to the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia, pledging to mobilise his supporters towards ensuring continued political support for the Governor in the forthcoming general elections.

AbIa State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has commended the swift and coordinated emergency response efforts of the State Fire service, following a fire outbreak at a facility linked to Nigerian Breweries Plc in Aba, describing the intervention as timely and effective.

The fire incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, reportedly started at about 3:20 p.m. and was brought under control before 6 p.m. The inferno, broke out at an open space leased from the Nigerian Railway Corporation and affected only empty crates without bottles, with no casualties recorded.

Speaking after an inspection tour of the site, Governor Otti praised the coordinated efforts of emergency agencies especially the professionalism of the Abia State Fire Service and expressed gratitude to God that no lives were lost.

The Governor who also expressed gratitude that the incident was not more severe, emphasised the critical importance of sustained safety measures and preparedness against unforeseen emergency incidents.

“Looking at that place, it’s probably the last place that you’ll expect to have a fire incident because it was just on it’s own, in an open field, so anything could have happened.

“It could be a match, it could be a cigarette or anything but you should be prepared like the boys scout will say while we pray it doesn’t happen again”, he cautioned.

The Governor disclosed that he had monitored the situation closely and initially did not realise the incident involved Nigerian Breweries due to the location of the affected facility.

“It was much later after the incident have been contained that I knew it was Nigerian brewery because it is far away from here. When we tried to locate the place, from our digital device, it didn’t point to Nigeria Breweries” the Governor said.

Governor Otti, acknowledged the longstanding presence of Nigerian Breweries Plc in the state and assured that his administration would continue to provide a conducive and enabling environment for the company to thrive.

“You have been here for almost seventy years and that’s good. All we owe you is an enabling environment for your business to continue to do well.

“This is a place (Abia) where all Nigerians gather and are working together. That is what the new Abia speaks about. Here we don’t have State of origin and we are all equal”.

Earlier, the Brewery Manager, represented by the
Chief Engineer of the Nigerian Breweries PLC, Engr Benjamin Okore, confirmed that the fire began around 3:20 p.m. after a staff member raised an alarm and clarified that the affected area was not part of the main brewing plant.

Engr. Okore further explained that the company activated its emergency response immediately the fire was detected and deployed internal firefighting resources before calling for external assistance.

He added that the company is currently assessing the extent of losses, noting that the fire was extinguished before 6 p.m. by the coordinated support of fire agencies which he commended for being instrumental in containing the inferno.

“The place where the fire incident happened is an open space, a lease facility by the Nigeria railway corporation. Empty crates without bottles were affected while this place that we are now is the main brewery, this is the main plant of the brewery.

“When the fire happened, alarm was raised and we activated our emergency procedure. Our fire fighters were mobilised, our fire truck was mobilised and we used a fire hydrant and other fire fighting measures.

“We also called on the Abia State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service. There was so much team spirit and speed in action. They arrived on time and together as teamwork we were able to contain the fire completely.

“We thank God so much that no lives were lost, nobody was injured, we only had some empty crates without bottles that were damaged. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the root cause”, Engr Okore said.

He further reaffirmed the company’s commitment to collaboration with regulatory and emergency agencies, adding that “We will continue to engage with your government and regulatory agencies and partner with you.

“We already have a good cordial working relationship with the fire service. They come here regularly to work with us, to do emergency drills with us and even give us training.

Earlier in an interview with National Ambassador reporter, the Mayor of Aba North Local Government Area, Mr Timothy Iheke, disclosed that he immediately coordinated response efforts upon receiving information of the fire incident.

The Mayor, who however raised suspicion about the cause of the fire expressed optimism that an investigation will reveal the cause of the incident .

Similarly, the Area Coordinator of the Abia State Harmonised Task Force, Chief Uche Nwogu, described the intensity of the inferno as overwhelming, likening the scene to “hell on earth”.

Chief Nwogu, who expressed relief that the fire did not spread beyond the immediate area, said the swift intervention of multiple fire services, supported by local volunteers, helped contain what could have escalated into a major disaster.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Abia State Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Rev Dr Okey Ihemanma, who represented the Commissioner, warned that the consequences could have been catastrophic if the fire had spread beyond the immediate area.

“There are surrounding buildings, residential buildings, banks, churches, petrol stations, it would have caused a massive infrastructural loss”, he said.

Rev Dr Ihemanma also raised concerns about possible deliberate ignition, arguing that the materials involved could not have caught fire without an external trigger.

“These are petrochemical products, there must be an ignition. Some saboteurs must have come in secretly”, he said.

Governor Otti who was accomplished by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa and other top government officials, also inspected the main brewing facility if the Nigeria Breweries PLC.

The State Finals of the Abia Soccer Fest have commenced, with matches taking place across three centres in Abia State, marking the second phase of the tournament aimed at discovering grassroots football talent.

Performing the ceremonial kick-off, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, urged participating teams to uphold discipline and strive for victory.

The Commissioner reiterated that the Abia Soccer Fest was conceived to identify and nurture football talents at the grassroots level, adding that the initiative had already yielded promising results.

According to Prince Nwachukwu , 57 standout players were identified during the local government stage of the competition.

“The essence of this entire competition is, first and foremost, to draw out talent from the various communities.

“And I am happy to say that some of the players I am seeing here, some of them are 17, 18, so we are happy that they are coming out.

“We will pick up all these players and then have them compete amongst themselves so that they can have opportunities in bigger clubs and showcase their talents.

“So apart from drawing out the talent, we also want to use it as a bonding strategy for communities to interact through the medium of sports”, he added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, disclosed that the competition had so far produced over fifty talented players and revealed plans to invite international scouts for possible selection.

Sir Ananaba advised participants to adhere strictly to the rules and remain focused, expressing optimism that exceptional performers would be discovered and nurtured further and commended Governor Alex Otti for his continued commitment to sports development in the state.

Providing further insight into the tournament, the Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Captain Eric Asomugha, explained that the State Finals represent the second phase of the competition, involving champions from the 17 local government areas, grouped into four pools.

He noted that the tournament has provided a valuable platform for youth engagement and talent exposure.

“The whole idea of Abia Soccer Fest is for community engagement, youth empowerment, and talent hunt.

“We want to give opportunity to our great footballers who are in the grassroots, so, we’ve gone deep into the villages. And mind you, this competition is being played by 184 wards in the state from the 17 Local Government Areas.

“So, we have two phases. Phase 1, we played 166 matches across the 17 Local Government Areas. And today, we are kicking off the second phase, which we call the State Finals; where the 17 Local Government champions will be competing against each other for the state champion”, Captain Asomugha explained.

In her remarks, the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, lauded Governor Otti for his support for youth development and urged all teams to play in accordance with the rules.

Abia State Government has clarified the circumstances surrounding the ongoing strike by the State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), attributing the industrial action to a dispute over the payment of leave allowance, which it says may already be captured within the workers’ consolidated salaries.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), made the clarification on Thursday while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, alongside the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr Kingsley Nwokocha, the Senior Special Assistant on Labour Relations, Sir Comrade Godson Anucha, and the Accountant-General of the State, Deaconess Njum Onyemenam.

Barr. Uwanna explained that the Union had requested payment of leave allowance, prompting the Office of the Accountant-General to demand details of how the claims were computed and confirmation that such allowances had not previously been paid as part of their remuneration.

According to him, preliminary findings by the government indicate that judiciary workers operate a consolidated salary structure which already includes a component referred to as “leave bonus,” raising questions about the legitimacy of the fresh demand.

“So we asked the judiciary workers to provide us with evidence that there is no component of leave bonus in their salary.

“What we got on the 13th of March was a notice that the government should either pay them or they will proceed on industrial action by midnight on the 15th of March”, the Attorney General stated.

He maintained that the State Government does not have full visibility into the detailed payroll structure of judiciary workers, as the arm of government manages its own payroll, and therefore requires documentary evidence to validate the claims.

“So, at that point, the members of the executive of the Judiciary workers were then requested to provide evidence that their salary, because the State, the Office of the Accountant General, does not have information with regards to what the details of their salary is.

“Now, consolidated salary is called consolidated because everything is consolidated into one and paid in different installments.

“Sometimes we also look at what happens in other states. Federal government does not pay for leave allowance to JUSUN members in the nation. That is our finding.

“Just like federal government does not pay leave allowance to, for instance, medical doctor or health workers in the federal civil service because of the consolidated scheme.

“The State Government will pay within 48 hours it realises that there is no leave allowance or leave bonus as a component of their consolidated salary”, he stated.

Barr. Uwanna further addressed the issue of staff verification, disclosing that efforts to verify Judiciary workers had been frustrated by members of the union.

“As you may all recall, when His Excellency Dr Alex Otti was sworn in, he commenced a verification exercise for all civil servants.

“And in view of the fact that we understand that the judiciary is independent, the judiciary staff were not verified when every other staff was verified.

“We then engaged the judiciary for the purpose of getting a consultant that will conduct a verification exercise for the judiciary.

“Indeed, on the 15th, that same day that they went on strike, was the day that was finally slated for the commencement of the verification exercise.

“And one wonders, is this a coincidence, or was it a well-orchestrated scheme to continue to earn salaries by ghost workers and persons who have questionable credentials?”, the Commissioner for Justice queried.

He warned that the continued refusal to undergo verification has adversely affected Pensioners who retired from the judiciary, as their records remain unvalidated.

“JUSUN should allow the judiciary to verify its staff so that those pensioners can be paid. We have had a lot of engagement. Time will fail me to explain the process that we have gone through to ensure that there’s proper verification, so that they can come into a system.

“They’re not going to come into executive system. They are going to come into their own electronic platform.

“Please, I would implore them, once again, not to continue to suffer these Pensioners. We are all citizens of this State, and the pensioners are entitled to their payment.

“So let them call off the strike, so that this verification exercise can be done, and these pensioners can start earning what is due them”, he stated.

Also speaking, the Accountant-General of the state, Deaconess Njum Onyemenam, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prompt payment of workers and pensioners and stressed the need for proper documentation from the Judiciary.

“The only question that we’re asking the judiciary staff today is to provide verifiable proof that they have earned leave allowances that were not paid over the period.

“For the judiciary, they need to provide documentation. They need to submit their documentation and go through the payment process to be able to get their lump sum.

“The Accountant General does not handle the payroll of the judiciary. Accountant General does not handle the payroll of the Judiciary, the Judiciary handles their payroll, and when they come up to make their demands, raise their payment vouchers, their payment vouchers go through the process of payment, that is the only time the Accountant General has the legal right to make that pay”, Onyemanam explained.

The movement said its initiative is designed to sustain what it described as ongoing progress in governance, economic transformation and sustainable development across Abia State.

In a press statement issued by its Chairman, Hon. Chibueze Daniel Okah, the group outlined its core mission, noting that it seeks to consolidate achievements recorded under the current administration by mobilising citizens and key stakeholders in support of the present administrations governance policies.

“The movement is committed to ensuring continuity of good governance, economic transformation and sustainable development across AbIa State”, the statement read.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has assured that his administration will approve the erection of monuments in honour of historic women, including the heroines of the 1929 Aba Women’s uprising.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Wednesday, at Onu Ibina, Igbere Bende LGA, during the burial ceremony of Mrs Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, wife of the member representing Bende North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe.

The Governor who was responding to the request by the Hon Nnamdi Ibekwe for the erection of monuments to honour women, particularly those associated with the historic 1929 uprising, pledged government support.

He added that such recognition would serve as encouragement to women who contribute immensely to societal growth.

“I want to thank the Honourable member for the request he made here. And the request was not about him. It was not even about Chiamaka. It was about the Abia women from inception.

“Our women have always been great women. If you don’t know, then you don’t know history. We’ve come to the level where somehow, either knowingly or unknowingly, we have refused to give women their due, particularly in our diaspora. 

” I’ve been at the forefront of fighting that women should be recognised and given their due place so the request you have made, I want to assure you that it is not only going to be considered, but it is going to be approved.

“And I believe it is going to be a great encouragement to women who toil day and night. Women, who, if they are not there, food may not be available, the children may not be able to go to school. Your trade may suffer. So we have to do this for the women folk and for humanity”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor who lamented the absence of female lawmakers in the State House of Assembly further used the occasion to advocate greater inclusion of women in governance.

He noted that the life of the Late Mrs Ibekwe was a divine gift and urged mourners not to grieve like unbelievers without the hope of resurrection, expressing confidence that the deceased was in a better place.

“Let me start by repeating that we are thanking God for the gift of this woman lying here today. A special privilege that we had her in the first place.

“If you spent time to read the tributes or if you encountered her, then you would know she was a gift from God. And because she was a gift, the giver will always determine the way he will take. It is not for us to decide what will happen”, the Governor said.

In an emotional tribute, the Chief mourner and Member Representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, described his late wife as his “paragon of peace” and “tranquilliser”, whose presence radiated calmness and godliness.

Hon Ibekwe extolled his late wife as a prayerful and exceptional woman who positively impacted many lives and used the occasion to renew his earlier motion in the Abia State House of Assembly for the erection of monuments to honour historic women, particularly, the heroines of the 1929 Aba Women’s uprising.

He urged Governor Otti to support the initiative, noting that such monuments would immortalise the “heroic deeds” of women and serve as a fitting legacy in honour of his late wife.

“Therefore, Your Excellency, I want to request that monuments be erected in honour of the heroines of 1929. If you do this, Chiamaka will rest in peace”, he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Maureen Ahukwa, while paying glowing tributes to the deceased, described her as a “virtuous woman, mentor and good example”, whose absence has created a significant void and urged the family to remain strong and cherish her legacy.

Speaking on behalf of the Wives of members of the State House of Assembly, Mrs Eucharia Okezie, said the late Mrs Ibekwe was a prayer warrior who loved God, shared the message of Christ among her colleagues adding that she who would be remembered for the enduring legacy she left behind.

In her sermon, Rev. Mrs Oyiks Alfred of Word Based Assembly, admonished mourners not to grieve like those without hope, urging the living to reflect on their lives and embrace God and prayed that the Almighty would comfort the bereaved family and all those affected by the passing of Mrs Ibekwe.

Earlier, in a biography, the second son of the deceased, Chimmezirim Ibekwe described his late mother as a quintessential representation of God’s goodness; “a woman that radiated peace and divine aura as well as a devoted wife, loving mother, and a quiet philanthropist who built her home on prayer, love, and strong belief in her children”.

He noted that although her passing has left a great void, her enduring legacy lives on through the many lives she positively impacted.

The solemn ceremony, marked by praise, worship and prayers for the bereaved family, attracted a large gathering of dignitaries, political leaders and sympathisers including the wife of the Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti; the Deputy Governor, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu; members of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly; commissioners; special aides to the Governor; key stakeholders from Abia North; traditional rulers; and members of the academic community.

He added that he dedicated the book to Governor Alex Otti in recognition of his transformative efforts in the education sector.

He further explained that the book thoroughly examines threats to societal values and development, while offering practical solutions. Among the issues addressed are drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, secret cultism, kidnapping, inadequate funding of education, lack of integrity, corruption, and armed robbery, among others.

The author noted that over the years, the rising rate of moral decadence and social vices has largely gone unchecked, with key institutions such as the family, religious bodies, schools, communities, and government not doing enough to address the situation. He observed that nurturing the mind is often neglected in favour of the pursuit of wealth and fame, adding that the quest for material possessions now dominates, leading to an unprecedented decline in individual character.

The Vice Chancellor of Clifford University, Prof. Chimezie Allwell Omeonu, described the book launch as timely, particularly at a period when social media plays a dominant role in the lives of students. He urged both institutions and individuals to purchase and read the book.

Also speaking, Hon. Engr. Frank Iwuala, Secretary of Ndi Imo in Abia and former Chairman of Aba North LGA, said that having lived in Abia for many years, this is the first time he is witnessing what he described as true governance, marked by widespread infrastructural development across the state.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has said he is seeking a second term in office because his administration still has “unfinished work” to complete, stressing that he would not have pursued re-election if his mission had been fully accomplished.

Governor Otti made this known on Monday, at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South, during a 10,000-man solidarity march organised by stakeholders from the area.

The rally was convened by the Labour Party House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Dannie Ubani.

According to the Governor, “if I had finished the work that I came to do, I wouldn’t be seeking a second term”, noting that significant work remains ahead in his administration’s quest to transform the State.

The Governor who acknowledged the importance of opposition in a democratic system, criticised certain opposition elements in the state, accusing them of engaging in what he described as “politics of witchcraft”.

He noted that it was culturally unacceptable within Igbo society to deny visible achievements such as completed road projects and other infrastructural developments.

Governor Otti also dismissed threats from what he termed “insignificant opposition elements”, which he said do not constitute up to five per cent of the state’s population and maintained that constructive criticism should focus on acknowledging existing achievements while offering better alternatives, rather than denying evident progress.

The Governor used the occasion to urge eligible citizens who are yet to register in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise to do so, warning that participating in political rallies without possessing a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) amounts to “a waste of time.”

He further encouraged members of the Labour Party to complete their e-registration and obtain membership cards to enable them participate in party primaries and support aspirants of their choice.

Reiterating his belief in divine authority, the governor reflected on his political journey, recalling the 2015 Abia State governorship election, which he said he won but was denied, and his eventual victory in the 2023 Abia State governorship election after what he described as “four days of fierce attempts” to thwart his mandate.

He stressed that power ultimately comes from God and that divine timing remains the best.

He expressed appreciation to the people for their continued support and commended the convener of the rally, Mr Dannie Ubani, for organising the event.

In his remarks, Mr Ubani said the rally was organised to demonstrate solidarity with the governor and showcase his leadership style and achievements.

He pledged unwavering support for Governor Otti’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has expressed confidence in the continued support of the Abiriba community, declaring that he has “never been in doubt” about their loyalty despite recent political developments.

Governor Otti stated this, on Sunday, when he received a high-powered delegation of Abiriba indigenes, led by Chief Ebueme Ezeikpe, in his office at Nvosi Isialangwa South LGA.

The Governor who acknowledged reports of a defection by a member of the Abiriba community, maintained that it would not affect the collective support base enjoyed by his administration.

“I would like to also say that I have never been in doubt about the support of the Abiriba people because my relationship with Abiriba people goes back a very, very long way.

“It is unfortunate that one of us said he was going to another party, like you mentioned but it’s within his right, just like you also added, to be anywhere he wants to be. It will also be difficult for him not to support me, so, I wish him well”, he said.

Governor Otti commended the people of Abiriba for taking the initiative to construct durable roads through self-help efforts, describing it as encouraging.

The Governor assured that the delegation the State Government would look into their requests for additional road asphalting and provide support where necessary.

He directed his Special Adviser on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem, to compile and forward the relevant details to the Commissioner for Works for appropriate action.

“I will look at the request for asphalting of additional roads in Abirba. I thought it was very encouraging that Abiriba sons and daughters are actually building their roads through self-effort and building solid roads with rigid pavement technology. 

“So, what we are coming to do would be to support, since the job has been done. So, we’ll look at it”, Governor Otti said.

The Governor also acknowledged the voting challenges posed by the diaspora nature of the Abiriba population but urged continued mobilisation.

Governor Otti who emphasised that ultimate power belongs to God, urged the people to play their part and trust in God’s divine will.

He expressed gratitude to the people of Abiriba for the visit and wished them a happy Easter celebration.

Earlier, the spokesperson of the group, Chief Jackson Agbai, reaffirmed the support of the Abiriba people for the Governor, stressing that the defection of one of their sons did not reflect the position of the community.

“We have come here to tell you as Abiriba people that we are with you. Abiriba people are 100% behind you”, Chief Agbai declared.

He disclosed that the community had already commenced grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of future elections, including voter registration and informal house-to-house campaigns.

Chief Agbai also commended the Governor for ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly the asphalting of the Abiriba Ring Road and appealed for the completion of other roads promised.

On the issue of population and electoral strength, Chief Agbai explained that the Abiriba people have a large population in the diaspora, adding that their strength lies not only in their numbers but in their strong influence and active role in driving commercial activities in Aba.

Also speaking, the Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, highlighted efforts made by the community to boost voter registration, revealing that about 5,000 new voters were added through targeted mobilisation.

Chief Kalu further disclosed that Abiriba indigenes in Aba and other cities were actively engaged through coordinated registration initiatives, including the establishment of centres in Aba.

He, however, raised concerns about internal party leadership issues in Abiriba wards, calling for a transparent process in future congresses to ensure effective grassroots mobilisation.

Contributing, a community leader, Chief Agbai Ochunkwo, emphasised the deep-rooted support for Governor Otti among Abiriba people, insisting that the community would ensure his re-election in 2027.

“If we are voting inAba, we are voting for Alex Otti, if we’re voting in Abiriba we are voting for Alex Otti.

“The Abiriba community in diaspora, in Abia State, everywhere is behind Dr. Alex Otti. You are the face of this government”, Chief Ochunkwo stated.

He thanked God for His unending love to the humanity which led him to give His only begotten son to die to save the world from eternal damnation.

The royal father called for all to emulate Jesus Christ, who sacrificed his life and died for all to be reconciled to God and show genuine love to their neighbours and people around them and promote peace in the society.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has formally received a number of prominent political figures from the Umunnato–Ngwa axis into the Labour Party, following their defection from the PDP, APC and ADC.

The defectors, including Chief Ncheta Omerekpe, Barr. Onyebuchi Ememanka, Elder Dr GOC Nnaji and other stakeholders, were welcomed on Saturday at the Nbawsi Mini Stadium in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.

Addressing the new members, Governor Otti assured them of equal status within the party, stressing that there would be no discrimination.

“So as you are joining today, you have the same status with me. If you want to be Governor, then you can come and contest with me”, he stated.

The Governor used the occasion to elaborate on the ongoing airport project in Nsulu, describing it as more than a conventional aviation facility.

According to him, the project is conceived as an “airport city” that would stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities.

“Let me thank all our brothers and sisters for their support. Particularly the genuine people who have supported our decision to cite an airport in this community.

“Because it is a city, there are so many things that will come with it. If you are following, you will understand that the Nigerian Air Force has already taken 100 hectares of land to build their facility here.

“A highly-rated hotel is going to be cited at the airport. This hotel is going to be managed internationally. Plazas, so many things are coming with airport city.

“So, if you didn’t understand it before, understand it, that we are not just putting an airport. It will come with a lot of things that will provide jobs for our people that will move the economy forward and give our people a new lease of life”, the Governor said.

He also acknowledged opposition from some members of the host community but attributed it to a lack of understanding of the project’s benefits.

“I am aware that some of your sons have been against citing the airport here. It is because they don’t understand. There is no way they would be against something that will lift this community.

“So, my message to you is that when you go back, those who are from this community. We are not interested in fighting with them, even though we will win them.

“Even if they go to international court of justice, we will still win them. Do you know why? The land belongs to the government and the person that has authority to take the land or give it is the government,” he added.

Earlier, the Acting State Chairman of the Labour Party, Sir Nwaeze Otti, said the defectors were drawn from across the three local government areas of Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South and Osisioma.

He noted that their decision to join the Labour party was informed by the Governor’s performance, adding that the present administration has placed Abia on a “developmental pedestal” and changed the narrative of governance.

In his remarks, the Chief of Staff to the Governor and host of the event, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described the mass defection as unprecedented, noting that the area had traditionally been a stronghold of opposition parties.

“These people from Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South and Osisioma coming together and to declare with one voice that they are supporting the Governor come 2027 is a demonstration of vote of confidence in his performance within the past close to three years now”, Ajagba said.

Speaking on behalf of the new entrants, Elder Dr GOC Nnaji, a former PDP Chairman in Isiala Ngwa North, said the decision to defect was driven by the positive changes witnessed in the state.

“I want to assure you that we are doing what we do with all sincerity. As the immediate past PDP chairman of Isiala Ngwa North, it wasn’t a very easy decision to take.

“We will not disappoint you. We will complement your efforts. We will join all the old members of Labour Party to add value to the party.

“I want to assure you that 2027 is going to be a landslide victory for you. If your election ended two days after the one that happened in 2023, I want to assure you that by 2 p.m. February 2027, all of us will be coasting to the residence”, Dr Nnaji stated.

Also speaking, Chief Ncheta Omerekpe and Barr. Onyebuchi Ememanka attributed their defection to what they described as the Governor’s exceptional performance, expressing confidence that he deserves re-election in 2027.

They maintained that the growing influx of stakeholders into the Labour Party was a reflection of the administration’s achievements, describing the forthcoming election as “a fight between light and darkness”, with “light” expected to prevail.

A symbolic “handshake across the Niger” unfolded on Friday, as Dr Ngozi Otti, youngest sister of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, traditionally married her heartthrob, Mr Ileri Adeniji from Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a colourful ceremony at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia.

The ceremony which attracted family members, political associates and dignitaries from across the country, was filled with joy, prayers and emotional tributes.

In an emotional address, Governor Otti recalled the difficult period following the death of their mother, revealing how the family struggled to keep Ngozi, the youngest child, going during that time.

The Governor paid glowing tribute to those who stood by the family, particularly acknowledging the role played by his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, whom he described as Ngozi’s “second mother”.

He commended her for rising to the occasion by taking responsibility for the bride’s upbringing, including relocating her to Lagos and ensuring she received proper care and education.

Governor Otti however, stressed that the ceremony was one of celebration rather than mourning.

“The story will be told another time, but by the time my mother left, the young lady by my right (the bride) was like the handbag of my mother, being the last one.

“We struggled to keep her alive because she wanted to go with her mother. I’m sure she remembers that.

“But then a young woman (Mrs Priscilla Otti) rose up to the responsibility and took her, moved her from Aba, her family house, brought her to Lagos, put her in a boarding school in Lagos and every weekend she was there to cater for her.

“So her second mother is the woman seated by my left. I want to use this opportunity to publicly thank her for rising to the occasion.

“Today is not a day for weeping because weeping had endured for a night and joy had come in the morning. Today is not for weeping, today is for happiness”, the Governor said.

He prayed for the couple, asking God to bless their union with children, success and prosperity, expressing confidence that their marriage was already divinely ordained.

Governor Otti also appreciated guests for attending the ceremony despite the significance of Good Friday in the Christian calendar and prayed that God would reward their sacrifices with blessings, protection and victory over life’s challenges.

In his remarks, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, described the marriage as a bridge between the South-East and the South-West, noting that it would strengthen ties in culture, commerce and politics.

Sen.Umahi declared blessings upon the couple and their families and expressed confidence that the union would usher in prosperity and divine favour.

He added that the marriage would stand as a symbol of unity, praying that every challenge the couple might encounter would already have solutions waiting for them.

Also speaking, the wife of the Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti prayed for peace, joy, fruitfulness and abundant blessings in the couple’s new home, expressing optimism that they would surpass the achievements of their parents and continue to enjoy God’s grace.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Nweze Roy Umahi, described the union as a fusion of two rich cultural heritages, noting that it symbolised a true “handshake across the Niger” between the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic groups.

He said the marriage marked the coming together of the Adeniji and Otti families as one, urging both families and friends to give the couple the necessary support to build a strong and enduring home.

“There should be no third-party interference in the marriage of Ngozi and Ileri. Allow them to grow together, and allow them to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes”, he advised.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has urged members of the Abia State Shippers Association to promptly report cases of harassment, illegal sealing of warehouses and extortion to relevant government agencies, as part of efforts to end criminality and strengthen law and order in the state.

Governor Otti stated this on Thursday while receiving members of the Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Olo Onuma, at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor who was reacting to complaints by the Association, reiterated his administration’s resolve to eliminate extortion and other forms of lawlessness

He noted that the State Government would not tolerate acts capable of undermining economic activities and public confidence.

Governor Otti expressed concern over the alleged extortion by hoodlums and individuals posing as security operatives, describing it as the first formal report of such incidents brought before him adding that it would be thoroughly investigated, with all those involved arrested and made to face the provisions of the law.

“There is a government here, any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately.

“One of the major things we have achieved here is to restore law and order, whoever you are, you must respect the law. We do not tolerate extortion, self-help or lawlessness in any form.

“This matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law”, he said.

Governor Otti directed his Chief of Staff to ensure that the allegations were thoroughly investigated and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence.

He maintained that the majority of Abia residents appreciates the State Government’s efforts in promoting the rule of law, respect for human rights and equal opportunities, assuring that his administration would continue to act in the best interest of the people.

On the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project, the Governor said that the project remains a strategic initiative but must be economically viable to attract patronage.

According to him, the absence of affordable and efficient transport infrastructure, particularly rail connectivity, poses a challenge to the project’s success.

“You can build it,(Dry Port ) but if it does not make economic sense to the businessmen who will use it, nobody will patronise it.

“Until we deal with rail transport and access logistics, it will be difficult to achieve the desired results”, he said. 

Governor Otti noted that traders and importers would naturally gravitate towards routes and facilities that minimise cost and delivery time.

Earlier, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abia State Shippers Association, Chief Olo Onuma, commended the Governor for what he described as remarkable achievements within a short period in office.

Chief Onuma, however, appealed for urgent government intervention in reviving the Abia Inland Dry Port project, stressing its potential to boost international trade and create employment opportunities.

“We urge your Excellency to bring your Midas touch to bear in this Abia State Inland Dry Port Project.

“The realisation of this dry port project will enormously enhance our international trade, increase employment within the state and of course leave further footprints of your in the sands of time here in Abia”, he said.

He decried the growing activities of hoodlums and alleged extortionists, claiming that members of the association, including artisans, fabric dealers, and shoe and bag makers, have suffered significant losses.

“Unfortunately, Your Excellency, a new gang of these extortionists have emerged and they are colluding with some government officials to cause havoc.

“They are extorting money from our members at our warehouse, offices and when we are offloading our cargoes.

“Specifically, these extortionists have engaged personnel from Standard Organisation Nigeria hiding behind the organisation to perpetrate their dubious activities.

“Furthermore, the extortionists also wait at the Army Brigade within the state, and arranges for soldiers to perpetrate the illegality”, he alleged.

Chief Onuma called on the State government to expedite action in tackling the menace, particularly in Aba, and urged greater awareness of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to enable local manufacturers tap into export opportunities.

He explained that the trade framework allows eligible Sub-Saharan African countries to export manufactured goods, especially garments, to the United States on favourable terms.

The Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria, Ms Sharon Dimanche, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for his “excellent leadership”, clear vision for economic transformation, job creation and inclusive growth.

Ms. Dimanche gave the commendation on Thursday, when she led officials of the organisation on a courtesy visit to the Governor at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The IOM Chief of Mission said her interactions across Nigeria showed a rare consensus about Governor Otti’s leadership style and impact.

“I have moved around in several states, what I get to hear from every person that I interact with is that you’re one of those very, very special governors in this country. 

“Everybody are all in one line acknowledging and appreciating your leadership. Under your guidance, we have seen a very, very strong vision for economic development, transformation, job creation, and inclusive growth”, she stated.

The IOM Chief explained that her visit was to review progress on earlier engagements, propose new areas of collaboration and seek the Governor’s guidance on priority areas requiring accelerated delivery.

Ms Dimanche while providing updates from her previous engagements, disclosed that Abia State, in collaboration with IOM, has made significant strides in key areas, including the establishment of a state task force on human trafficking, scheduled for inauguration on April 13.

On diaspora engagement, she praised the establishment of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, adding that IOM had already commenced an institutional capacity needs assessment which will guide capacity-building efforts scheduled for April.

Ms Dimanche further disclosed that about 800 returnees had so far been supported through technical and vocational education training as well as reintegration assistance by the organisation adding that the next phase would focus on linking the beneficiaries to job markets for meaningful economic engagement.

She also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen data-driven governance through the establishment of a multi-stakeholder data management framework.

The IOM Chief identified three strategic areas for partnership with the State Government which include leveraging the diaspora as a driver of development through structured investment platforms, skills transfer and enterprise support.

She proposed a tripartite funding model involving the State, Private Sector and Diaspora Community and emphasised strengthening value chains and enterprise development, particularly in Aba’s industrial ecosystem, through improved access to finance, market linkages and skills alignment with industry needs.

“The goal is to position Aba as a competitive production and export hub, capable of creating jobs at scale”, she said.

According to Ms Dimanche, the third focus area centres on community resilience and workforce stabilisation, targeting vulnerable groups, youth and returnees through cooperative-based livelihood programmes and pathways to sustainable employment.o

She stressed that these interventions would create a “reinforcing cycle” of job creation, investment growth and social stability which aligns with the Governor’s development agenda.

Ms Dimanche reaffirmed IOM’s readiness to support the state through large-scale programme implementation, technical assistance and resource mobilisation frameworks, including trust funds.

The IOM Chief proposed steps, including identifying priority areas, appointing a state focal point, and setting up a joint technical team to develop actionable programmes.

“IOM stands ready to support the state in accelerating your priority initiatives to deliver visible, measurable results, quickly, with efficiency, and at scale”, she added.

Responding, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic transformation, inclusive growth and improved social services as key strategies to curb poverty and encourage reverse migration.

The Governor recalled earlier discussions with the IOM on migration trends, noting that many people leave in search of better opportunities, sometimes based on unrealistic expectations.

According to the Governor, the real solution reverse migration lies in creating an enabling environment anchored on transparency, fairness, justice and equity, stressing that migration should ultimately serve as a pathway out of poverty.

He identified access to quality healthcare as a major driver of migration, explaining that people are more likely to relocate if better medical services are available elsewhere.

Governor Otti added that the State has strengthened its primary healthcare system to the point where between 80 and 85 per cent of health needs could be addressed at that level, supported by improved infrastructure, equipment and qualified personnel.

On economic and social development, the Governor highlighted efforts to make the State more livable and productive, noting that Nigeria’s large population presents a significant market for locally made goods.

The Governor also pointed to the success of free education, which doubled school enrollment and led to the recruitment of thousands of teachers, alongside improved welfare and extended retirement age.

He expressed readiness to partner with IOM on funding and strategic projects, including the proposed Medical City and Airport project, noting that such collaborations would enhance investor confidence and attract development partners.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has pledged to facilitate the completion of the permanent secretariat of the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Thursday when he received a delegation of NUJ, led by its Chairman, Comrade Chidi Asonye, at his office in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

The Governor who reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions critical to good governance also assured that government would provide mobility assistance to the Union.

He however declined the Unions request for financial subvention, arguing that granting regular funding to the Union could undermine its independence and weaken its role as a watchdog in a democratic society.

The Governor stressed the need for Journalists to remain independent and objective in upholding the principles of professional integrity.

“I want you to remain independent. I want you to be able to have your voice. That is the only way the society can get better.

“I am struggling with subvention because my understanding is that you are independent of government. When government begins to funnel money into you every month, before you know it, you become an arm of government. When you do, you will lose your voice.

“I don’t think it is the appropriate way to go. You know the saying, who pays the piper dictates the tune. So there must be a sustainable way of funding yourself.

“We can support you. I don’t agree that any organ which is not an organ of government should receive subvention”, he stated.

Governor Otti assured the Journalists of his administration’s willingness to assist in other critical areas and encouraged the Union to explore alternative funding strategies, including partnerships and fundraising initiatives.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, AbIa State Chapter, Comrade Chidi Asonye, commended Governor Otti for the visible achievements record especially in areas such as infrastructure, environmental sanitation, education, and youth empowerment, noting that the administration has rekindled public confidence and redefining the state’s narrative.

The AbIa NUJ Chairman drew the attention of the Governor to the challenges facing the Council, particularly the absence of a permanent secretariat, lack of subvention, and poor mobility.

He noted that the secretariat is “not just a building but a symbol of our identity, our dignity, and professionalism” and appealed for urgent government intervention to complete and upgrade the facility.

Comrade Asonye also argued that structured subvention would enhance the Union’s capacity to carry out its responsibilities, including professional development and effective dissemination of information.

On mobility, the NUJ Chairman stressed that “journalism is not a desk-bound profession and added that “a functional vehicle would enhance effective coverage of government activities, community engagements and other critical events.

He reaffirmed the Unions commitment to upholding the principles of truth, fairness and professionalism and pledged support for the Otti led administrations dedicated partners in your vision for a new Abia.

Also speaking, an Ex-Officio member of the Union, Ezeogo Boniface Okoro, noted that a properly developed secretariat could serve as a revenue-generating asset for the NUJ, and urged the Governor to consider flexible ways of supporting the Union.

Ezeogo Okoro, also called for closer engagement between the government and the media, pointing out that accurate reportage of government activities was driven by performance rather than influence.

AbIa State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has assured the people that his administration would accelerate the pace of governance as it approaches its fourth year in office, noting that the government remains committed to delivering tangible results.

Governor Otti who stated this on Thursday when he attended the Chrism Mass of the CKC Aba, assured that the coming phase of his administration would witness intensified efforts across key sectors.

The Governor cited the ongoing CKC water scheme as a key project nearing completion and revealed that the project is about “80–90 per cent completed” and would soon begin supplying water to residents.

“We will even increase the tempo as we go into the fourth year. You ain’t seen nothing yet. We still have a lot to do.

“By next month, I’ll complete the CKC water project and water will start running. I want you to open your tap in your kitchen, and water will be running”, he said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic participation, urging citizens, particularly young people who have turned 18, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

Governor Otti who issued a stern warning against a planned protest in Aba, allegedly being orchestrated by a small group seeking to incite unrest in the state, urged residents to avoid participating in the protest.

According to the Governor, intelligence reports indicated that certain individuals had already prepared placards and were mobilising outsiders to stage a protest aimed at causing disaffection with the intent to provoke conflict that could lead to violence.

He stressed that although the government remains committed to lawful conduct, it would not hesitate to act decisively against threats to public peace.

“Let us warn everybody. If anyone tries that, he may end up somewhere he did not plan to”, he Otti cautioned.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement he received from the Catholic Bishop of AbA, His Lordship, Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, during the Chrism Mass, describing it as both unexpected and deeply significant.

The Governor also acknowledged the sustained support of the Church and praised the clergy for their spiritual leadership, particularly commending priests who renewed their vows during the ceremony.

He assured the congregation that his administration would continue to justify the confidence reposed in it.

Earlier, the Bishop of Aba Diocese, the Most Rev Prof Augustine Echema, used the opportunity to endorse Governor Otti for the 2027 general elections, expressed confidence that his achievements would continue to speak for him.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Wednesday joined Roman Catholic faithfuls across the world to celebrate the Chrism Mass, a significant liturgical rite marking the Holy Week in the Christian calendar.

The Chrism Mass, observed in Catholic dioceses globally, is a solemn ceremony during which bishops consecrate sacred oils such the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and the consecration of the Sacred Chrism used in administering key sacraments throughout the year.

It is celebrated by bishops alongside priests of their dioceses and symbolises unity, service and spiritual renewal within the Church.

In his remarks, at the Mater Dei Catholic Church Umuahia, Governor Otti, expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life and for seeing the Christian faithfuls through the Lenten season.

“I want to join the priests and everyone to celebrate God for seeing us through the whole Lenten season that is about to end and also Easter that will be in a few days time”, the Governor said.

While reflecting on the 2023 electoral year, Governor Otti described the events that ushered his administration into power as extraordinary, calling the transition a “miracle” and cautioning against forces seeking to reverse the gains achieved.

He stressed that civic responsibility remains critical to sustaining the progress achieved by his administration.

“It just reminds us that what God did here in 2023 is a miracle. You know, when things like this happen, some people will not be happy and they will want to do everything to take you back to where you are coming from, also known as Egypt. 

“But it is for us to say we will not go back to Egypt. The only way you can guarantee against going back to Egypt is your PVC. That is the only message I have for you today”, he added.

Governor Otti further noted that divine intervention must be complemented by individual effort and tasked those yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing registration process.

“Once you have done your own, you know God will do his own. But if you sleep, God cannot do for you what you can do for yourself,” the Governor said.

He expressed appreciation to the presiding Bishop for the opportunity to address the congregation and wished Christians a joyful Easter celebration.

Earlier in his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Father Michael Kalu Ukpong explained that the mass centres on the blessing of oils used in Church sacraments and the commemoration of the institution of the priesthood.

The Bishop noted that all sacraments derive their strength from the death and resurrection of Christ and urged the faithful to engage in sober reflection.

He also cautioned the Church against indiscriminately accepting “anointing oils” from individuals who claim to be servants of God, stressing that the performance of miracles is not, in itself, proof of genuine divine calling.

Governor Otti was accompanied to the Chrism Mass by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu; former Deputy Governor of the State and former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, and the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha.

Others in attendance include the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Mmeregini; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Dr Salome Obiukwu, the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Navy Commander Macdonald Ubah (Rtd); the Chairman, Umuahia North Local Government Area, Hon. Smart Iheoma and the Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Engr. Chinedu Enwereuzor.
