Abia State Government has commenced plans to review and re-gazette autonomous communities across the state as part of efforts to restore order, strengthen grassroots governance and address recurring communal disputes.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Saturday at the JAAC Secretariat in Umuahia during a statewide meeting of Presidents-General of towns and developmental Unions.

The meeting was convened by the State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Prince Nwachukwu said the exercise had become necessary due to the irregularities observed in the existing structure of autonomous communities, noting that the last gazetting was carried out about 11 years ago.

“We are embarking on review of autonomous communities. If we go to our gazettes, as carried out about 11 years ago, when the last gazetting was done, we are overdue, but we are supposed to have re-gazetted by last year because it’s done once every 10 years.

“You see all sorts of operations. You will find instances where one village is gazetted into two autonomous communities.

“You will find instances where one village is in one community but certain kindreds and families are in another community. Those are confusions.

“There are situations where a traditional ruler, in his domain, who is a custodian of an autonomous community, has his village ceeded to another Traditional Ruler.

“So he has become a subject of that Traditional Ruler. Are you aware of those things? Those are operations. So this year we are going to do a regazeting.

“These things call for crisis. There is no week I receive anything less than 50 petitions in my office. None!”, he stated.

The Commissioner explained that the persistent disputes arising from such anomalies informed the establishment of conflict management and mediation centres in all local government areas of the State.

He further announced that the government would institutionalize town and development Unions to ensure proper coordination and accountability at the grassroots level.

“We want to institutionalize town and development Unions. So, you (participants) can find out that your details have been taken. We want to make sure, who the leaders of these town and community development Unions in the various communities are.

“So we want to make sure we are doing documentations. The same kind of thing that is happening with traditional institutions, where two, three, four, five people will go through the process of being elected traditional rulers of their places.

“And then one person will win, the other four will not agree. And everybody, four of them or five of them will go to the local government and insist that they must be received. And all of them are received.

“We are putting a stop to all those for the sake of the progress of our land. So we are creating a statewide database”, he said.

Prince Nwachukwu emphasised that the government has no interest in determining who emerges as President-General or community development chairman, but insisted that due process must be followed.

He described the meeting as a decisive step towards strengthening grassroots governance, noting that town and development Unions have historically driven rural development but have recently been weakened by poor structure, lack of documentation and leadership conflicts.

Prince Nwachukwu who clarified roles within the community leadership system, stated that traditional rulers remain custodians of culture and symbols of unity, while Presidents-General and development Unions leaders serve as administrators and drivers of development.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (rtd.), described the meeting as a novel initiative and stressed that security remains a collective responsibility.

He urged community leaders to take intelligence gathering seriously, noting that effective security depends on timely information sharing.

In their remarks, the Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Afuruobi, and a representative of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Sampson Jinanwa, pledged continued collaboration with development uynions to enhance peace and development at the grassroots.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, said the meeting marked the beginning of a new phase in the state’s efforts to strengthen community governance.

“This engagement has therefore be convened to establish a direct interface between government and the leadership of town and development unions”, she said.

Leaders of various communities, including Dr Greene Nwoha of Oro-Ibere Autonomous Community, Chief Yuccee Ottah Uwah of Abiriba Communal Improvement Union Worldwide, and Hon. Chukwudi Edward Egwuonwu of Ozuitem Community, commended Governor Alex Otti for convening the meeting, describing it as the first of its kind and expressing optimism that it would enhance security, peace and development across the state.

The State Publicity Secretary, Hon Godwin Adindu, urged opposition parties in the state to adopt constructive criticism in their engagements, stressing that while opposition remains vital to democracy, it should not be driven by bitterness or hostility.

He noted that opposition critiques play a key role in shaping governance, describing them as an essential component of a thriving democratic system.

“Democracy cannot thrive without an alternative voice. While we project our efforts, the opposition is expected to scrutinize them. However, what we are witnessing in Abia today is unnecessary hostility. The Governor remains open to constructive ideas”, he said.

Adindu further decried the misuse of social media, lamenting that it has become a platform for propaganda and unwarranted attacks aimed at discrediting the government. He emphasized that such actions are misleading and counterproductive, urging critics to channel their voices toward meaningful contributions that can positively influence governance.

He also stressed the importance of safeguarding the state’s ancestral heritage, particularly as the nation approaches another election cycle. According to him, preserving cultural identity should take precedence over political interests.

Adindu explained that the press briefing was organized to strengthen ties with journalists and update them on the group’s activities. He called on the media to collaborate with the Igbo socio-cultural organization in promoting and preserving the culture and identity of the people.

In his vote of thanks, the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Chief Obinna Ibe, also appealed for media partnership, noting that the group’s mission to defend and promote the Igbo heritage cannot be achieved without the support of the press.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the women of Umuda-Isingwu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, recently came out in their numbers all dressed in black attires, decrying how major parts of their lands have become habitation for Fulani herders.

In a peaceful protest to Government House, Umuahia, the women were seen carrying placards with inscriptions, such as, “Our Land is not for sale, Our women use the land for farming, we don’t have any other land, food is more important than housing, Gov Otti, save our children from going hungry”. While others read “Our children are dying of hunger, Chaka Chukwumerije, stop defying the voice of the people “.

Addressing the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribole, who received the aggrieved women on behalf of the government, the women, led by Mrs. Nkechi Nnodimele, recounted the origin of the crisis.

According to her, in 2018, some individuals allegedly approached the community over a parcel of land located along Ubani Ibeku, claiming it would be developed into an estate.

She explained that the proposal was rejected by the community, particularly because the land serves as a major source of livelihood for the women, who depend on it for farming activities.

Nnodimele alleged that despite the rejection, the land was forcefully taken and has since remained undeveloped, and eventually becoming a settlement area for Fulani herders. She further lamented that recent developments have worsened the situation, as another portion of the land currently under cultivation by the women, was reportedly bulldozed, destroying crops including cassava.

“Our women depend on that land for survival. What was planted had not matured before everything was destroyed. We have no other land for farming or for future use. If we keep quiet, it means Umuda Isingwu no longer has land”, she said.

Responding, the SSG, Emmanuel Meribole, commended the women for their peaceful conduct and assured them that their grievances would be addressed. He noted that the matter is already known to the Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije.

Also speaking, the SSG disclosed that the Umuahia North Mayor, Smart Ihuoma, equally assured that he would engage relevant stakeholders on the matter, promising to visit the community within one week to assess the situation and provide solutions.

He stated further that they were already in contact with the community’s President General and reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

The SSG also promised to brief Governor Alex Otti on the matter for prompt action.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has directed an immediate survey of all properties belonging to the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) across the State as part of measures to prevent encroachment by land grabbers.

The directive was issued on Wednesday, when the Abia State Postal Manager, Mrs Winifred Amadi, paid the Governor a courtesy visit at his office in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.

Governor Otti also instructed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, alongside the Commissioner for Lands, to urgently intervene in the alleged encroachment on NIPOST land in Item, Bende Local Government Area.

He described the development as illegal and warned that such acts would not be tolerated.

The Governor further challenged the postal service to reposition its operations towards profitability, assuring that his administration would collaborate with the agency to enhance service delivery in the State.

Earlier, the Abia State Postal Manager, Mrs Winifred Amadi, appealed to the State Government to halt the growing encroachment on NIPOST properties, citing a recent incident in Item, where staff were reportedly driven out of their office by individuals.

Mrs Amandi further proposed areas of collaboration between NIPOST and the State Government, including the designation of the agency’s Express Mail Service (EMS) as the official logistics courier for government correspondence, parcels and merchandise.

She added that the introduction of commemorative postal stamps could help project Abia’s rich cultural heritage to a global audience.

In a major political twist ahead of the 2027 elections, the lawmaker representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Mascot Ikwechegh (Onyeocha na Aba), has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

His exit would contribute to deepening the leadership vacuum created by the earlier resignation of party executives.

In his resignation letter which was addressed to his ward chairman in Eziama Ward 1, Aba North LGA, on Saturday morning, Hon Ikwechegh expressed gratitude to APGA for the platform to serve and wished the party well in its future pursuits.

The move comes days after ward and Local Government Executives loyal to him in Aba North and Aba South stepped down from APGA, a development that significantly weakened the party’s grassroots structure in the commercial city of Abia State.

According to Analysts, Ikwechegh’s exit was anticipated, following the mass resignation of his supporters, interpreting it as a prelude to a broader political realignment.

Despite the unfolding political developments, the federal lawmaker has remained visible in legislative activities. He currently serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Poverty Elimination and is a member of committees on Anti-Corruption, Navy, NASENI, and Agricultural Institutions.

Recently, he publicly advocated for real-time electronic transmission of election results, stressing that manual collation creates loopholes for manipulation.

“This is 2026, not 1945. We must embrace progress,” he declared.
Speculation is now rife over his next political destination. Some analysts believe he may align with Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, whom he has previously commended for what he described as “magical” performance in office.

However, other sources indicate that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is making strong overtures toward the lawmaker. Reports suggest he recently met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after which he tendered his resignation from APGA, a sequence of events that has fueled rumors of an imminent defection to the APC.

Relaying his political future in a recent interview with Journalists in Umuahia, Ikwechegh stated that if the people of Aba desire his continued representation, he remains willing to serve as their “chief servant”.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti, has congratulated former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), on his 70th birthday, describing him as a symbol of bravery, courage and sacrifice.

Governor Otti said this on Friday night at a public lecture titled, “Leading Nigeria Forward: Strategies for Security and National Cohesion,” organised by Abia Government, to mark Ihejirika’s 70th birthday.

Ihejirika, a native of Ovim in Isiukwuato Local Government Area of Abia State who was born on February 13, 1956, served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from September 2010 to January 2014 and was the first Igbo officer to hold the position since the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

Speaking at the event held at the International Conference Center Umuahia, which drew an array of dignitaries from across the country, including President Bola Tinubu, Senior Military officers (serving and retired), and captains of industry among others, Governor Otti paid glowing tributes to Ihejirika’s service, leadership and contributions to national security.

The Governor said that Ihejirika’s birthday was deliberately marked alongside the commissioning of landmark projects such as construction of the Omenuko bridge and the 30 Kilometers Abam-Ndiokereke-Arochukwu road, to honour his service and commitment to the state and nation.

He said politics should prioritise service over personal interests and that leadership must challenge entrenched norms, noting that Ihejirika’s steadfast commitment to the collective interest of Abians has earned him enduring respect

The Governor said that Ihejirika was appointed Chairman of the Abia State Security Council on merit and that his contributions had strengthened security within the state.

He urged public office holders to serve diligently, stressing that the opportunity to lead demands integrity and courage.

In his speech, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Uche described Ihejirika as “a patriot, courageous general, Pan-Nigeria and a fine gentleman” who served Nigeria at a very turbulent period in the war against insurgency and acquitted himself very credibly.

President Tinubu prayed God to grant the celebrant good health and long life so that the nation would continue to draw from his wealth of experience in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive leadership within the nation’s security architecture, noting that Ihejirika was the last Service Chief from the South-East before his administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.

President Tinubu said he appointed Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla from the South-East as Chief of Naval Staff on June 19, 2023, and Air Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff in October 2025, noting that the appointments reflected deliberate efforts to promote national cohesion.

He called for unity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should strengthen rather than divide the country.

Also, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), recounted professional encounters with Ihejirika, describing him as a leader who mentored officers and strengthened operational strategies, including the introduction of long-range patrols which influenced his own command approach.

Contributing, the Minister of Works, Sen Dave Umahi described Ihejirika as a man of integrity and courage who promoted officers strictly on merit, saying that his tenure addressed perceived marginalisation and strengthened institutional fairness.

Sen Umahi called for unity in the South-East, urging leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and support development initiatives.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by the Chief of Standard and Evaluation for the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Thompson Ugiagbe, described Ihejirika as a man whose life has been marked by service and whose contributions significantly enhanced national security.

He urged residents of the South-East to support the Nigerian Army with timely intelligence and cooperation.

Earlier, the sister of the celebrant, Mrs Oluchi Chigbu, described her brother as a beacon of hope and pillar of support to the Ihejirika family and prayed God to bless the him with good health, longlife and greater blessings in the years ahead.

In his remarks, Ihejirika thanked God for preserving his life and enabling him to witness the milestone, said he was overwhelmed by the turnout of over 200 generals and numerous officers at the celebration.

The retired Lieutenant General recalled early mentorship from senior officers who guided and prepared him for military service, adding that the mentorship instilled confidence and discipline that shaped his military career.

He described missing promotion from lieutenant-colonel to colonel as a setback that later influenced his eventual appointment as Chief of Army Staff adding that he survived several accidents unharmed, which he attributed his survival to divine providence.

Ihejirika said that he never viewed his career through the lens of ethnicity or marginalisation

noting that he rose to occupy virtually every key command position open to an army officer.

He urged Nigerians to rise above divisive sentiments and embrace unity and emphasised that genuine national cohesion remains the bedrock for sustainable progress and development.

The Birthday celebration, chaired by Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu(rtd), featured a keynote address by the former Governor of Kaduna State, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, and was attended by former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor(rtd), former Chief of Army Staff,Lt.-Gen. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called on Stakeholders of Ukwa La Ngwa to embark on a vigorous mobilisation of all eligible citizens yet to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) within the bloc, to register ahead of future elections.

Governor Otti made appeal on Friday, at the Enyimba International Stadium Aba, during a Grand Civic Reception held in his honour by the 9 Local Government Areas of the Ukwa La Ngwa bloc.

The Governor noted that such exercise is critical for the bloc to fully demonstrate its actual voting strength and influence in the democratic process.

He expressed concern over the disparity between the population of Aba, the State’s commercial nerve centre and its recorded voter turnout during elections.

Governor Otti argued that the current voter register does not reflect the true demographic weight and political potential of Aba, noting that the strength of the populace could only be fully realised through formal participation in the democratic process.

“The number of people in Aba is ten times larger than the number of votes that come from Aba, so the only way to show your strength is to go to all the nooks and crannies around you and get people to come and register”, he said .

Governor Otti thanked the Ukwa la Ngwa people for the civic reception in his honour, describing the”intimidating”, mammoth crowd which included prominent figures such as former Minister of State for Mines and Steel, Dr. Uche Ogah of the APC, Senator Enyi Abaribe of APGA and former Senate President Senator Adolphus Wabara of the PDP, amongst others as a cross-partisan endorsement of his administration.

He announced that the commissioning of the newly completed Ovom Road, has been scheduled for the 25th of February, adding that the same date would also serve as the official flag-off for the reconstruction of the iconic Enyimba Hotel to a 5 star International standard by Radisson Blu.

In their separate speeches the Senator Representing Abia South Senatorial District, Chief Enyinnaya Abaribe on behalf of Stakeholders from the nine Local Government Areas of Ukwa La Ngwa and the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha said that Governor Otti has fundamentally transformed the State’s narrative across all sectors and deserves the full support of every citizen.

They described the reception as an expression of public love and acceptance for the Governor, noting that that the Governor has by every measure, redefined governance in Abia State.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Senator Adolphus Wabara described the reception as a united, non-partisan and the people’s verdict in honour of the Governor whose performance is built on verifiable achievements rather than propaganda.

He sated that the mammoth crowd was “organic, spontaneous, and genuine,” which represents citizens who have seen and felt the dividends of purposeful leadership.

Senator Wabara noted that the visible transformation across the state, exemplified by the timely completion of the Port Harcourt Road in Aba had permanently silenced the present administration’s detractors.

He said that the era of imposing leaders on Abians is over and urged the Governor not to be distracted by forces plotting against his second-term ambition, adding that “the future of Governor Otti in 2027 will be decided solely by Abia voters”.

Sen Wabara urged the Governor to consider a return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which he said offers a stronger and more stable platform for consolidating the gains of his administration in 2027.

In his address, the leader and spokesperson of the Ukwa La Ngwa people, Chief Theo Nkire, declared the event as celebration of a landmark achiever for the Ukwa Ngwa nationhighlighted that Dr. Alex Otti has, in record time, revolutionized all sectors of public life, notably transforming Aba from a modest trading center into a burgeoning world-class industrial hub.

Chief Nkire further appealed to all Abians beyond the Ukwa Ngwa region to view their kin through a lens of shared progress. A Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former Minister of Mines and Steel Development , Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, has declared that Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, deserves a second term in office.

Dr Ogah who citied the Governor’s impactful performance and visible transformation of the State, made the assertion on Tuesday while speaking with Journalists after a closed-door meeting with Governor Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.

The Former Minister, while noting that the visit was primarily to extend New Year greetings to the Governor, stressed that a second term would enable Governor Otti to fully actualise his development agenda for the State.

The APC Chieftain who used the opportunity to assess the Otti led administration’s performance, said the Governor has earned the appreciation of Abians.

“I think he deserves a second term. I’ve said it times without number. It’s not something arguable anywhere.

“I’ve said it times without number, that God has used him to wipe away the tears of Abia people.And this is just a few years of governance that people can see the positive results coming from his effort. So Abians are grateful, Abians are happy.

“He should have the opportunity to govern us a second time, so that he can put out there, all that he has planned for Abia people. I think it is something that everybody should support him to complete his second term”, Dr Oga added.

Speaking on the growing political activities and early manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, Dr Ogah noted that expressions of political interest and competition are natural features of democracy.

“Normally politics is when you have your goods, you need to sell your goods so you can’t expect somebody not to sell his goods. So people have to sell their goods. That’s what opposition means.

“But you know, at the end of the day, God and Abians will determine who governs them”, he said.

On speculation about his own political ambition ahead of 2027, the Former Governorship candidate said that he harbours no personal ambition for elective office.

“The ambition I have is to support the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for presidency and support Governor Alex Oti for governorship. That’s my ambition”, Dr Ogah stated.

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, has declared that Governor Alex Otti has, through his landmark achievements, earned himself a second term in office.

Sir Oko Chukwu made this known in an interview with journalists at the Governor’s country home in Nvosi, after a closed-door meeting with Dr Otti.

He noted that the Governor has, within a short period, transformed various sectors of the State’s economy.

“I’ve gone around Abia State, especially those of us who come from Abia North. You just discover that the kind of road infrastructure that we have there is unprecedented.

“It’ is not all about politics, it’s not, no propaganda about it. The truth must be told. There is a remarkable improvement'”, he said. 

The former Deputy Governor commended the Governor’s deliberate and strategic approach to governance, particularly in infrastructure, health, and sports.

“You discover that virtually everything that he (Gov Otti) is doing, he is been very, very intentional about everything. Is it in terms of road infrastructure? Is it on health? Is it on sports? Very, very intentional.

“Going by what he (Otti) has done so far, you will discover that, without mincing words, he has earned himself another tenure”, he asserted.

Sir Oko Chukwu, who also once served as Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, described Governor Otti’s infrastructural revolution across Abia North, Aba and Umuahia as unprecedented.

He added that the level of cleanliness witnessed under the current administration is unlike anything previously experienced.

“Even if you move around Aba, move around Umuahia, the level of cleanliness is such that we have not witnessed before”, he said.

He noted that his visit was to commend and appreciate the Governor’s achievements and to reassure him of the support of Abia stakeholders.

“So we just come to commend him and to appreciate him and let him know that all hands are on deck to support him and looking at all that he has been able to do within just two years.

“You can just be reassured that the man has earned himself another tenure,” Sir Oko Chukwu reiterated.

When asked if he would join other opposition figures aligning with the Governor’s Labour Party, the PDP stalwart said such an decision would be formally announced.

“They are doing realignments. It’s also likely that some of us will also join them in doing realignments.

“If I’m going to do that (join LP), I will invite all of you to be part of what will happen, maybe soonest,” Sir Oko Chukwu stated.

The Umuahia capital city, played host to friends, colleagues and families, who gathered to celebrate the life of a selfless gentleman. It was an electrifying atmosphere, with attendees showering gratitude to God for the life of a man who has lived not just long, but well, leaving indelible marks in the lives of his family, community, and the church.

Elder Uduma Onuoha, a retired civil servant and an active community leader, is known not just for his age, but for the quality of life he has lived. Former President-General of the Okaigbo Ohafia Development Union, he has served in various leadership and service-oriented roles within the church and every estate he has resided in. A devout Christian, Elder Onuoha is a Sunday school teacher and chorister, whose passion for Godliness and contentment has become his life’s mantra.

In an interview with Journalists, Elder Uduma Onuoha shared some secrets of his success in life,. According to him, “Godliness with contentment is great gain. Whatever God gives to me at any point in time, I am happy. I have taught my children this. People should know that the cause of anxiety and many sicknesses is worrying too much”.

He speaks from deep personal experience, recounting how God’s grace carried him through a fragile infancy, gave him access to education at Government College Afikpo, and has sustained him through life’s many seasons. “A classmate who failed the entrance exam to the school selflessly transported me by bicycle to sit for the interview, a simple act of kindness that became a turning point in my life”.

Throughout his life, Elder Onuoha has stood for integrity and righteousness. He has always advocated for things to be done rightly. According to him, If you are on the side of truth, no weapon formed against you would prosper.

This unwavering commitment to justice and uprightness has earned him respect across communities, tribes, and social strata. It was no surprise that people from all walks of life came to honor him at his 80th birthday, proof of the seeds of kindness, wisdom, and service he has sown over the years.

He went further to add that life was about seed-sowing and harvest, urging people to sow into the lives of people, as someday they would reap of it.

Continuing, Dr Chukwuemeka Onuoha, revealed that his father was not only deeply rooted spiritual but also profoundly detail-oriented. He said even at 80, he still checks in on each family member with thoughtful questions and remains active in both church and community affairs.

He said beyond his leadership and discipline, Elder Uduma is known for his calm and nurturing nature, recalling how he rarely resorted to punishment, choosing instead to counsel and reason with them.

“Daddy never really got angry. The worst he would do is spank our behinds lightly. He preferred to talk to us and that helped us become better”.

Looking ahead with gratitude,  Dr Onuoha, disclosed that the entire Onuoha family feels blessed and honored to celebrate this milestone with their father.

In his tribute, Dr Onuoha expressed excitement over celebrating his Dad at 80, praying God to do even more for him. “We look forward to celebrating 90 years and possibly 100, by God’s grace”.

Elder Uduma Onuoha’s life is a testament to what it means to live with purpose, integrity, and love for both God and community. At 80, he stands not only as a patriarch of his family but as a beacon of light to everyone who has had the privilege to know him. His legacy continues to inspire and uplift, a legacy built on faith, service, and a life well-lived.

Highpoint of the event, was the cutting of the 80th birthday cake, with guests being treated to beautiful cuisines, assorted drinks and some items to snack on. Of course, there were melodious tunes from the Disc Jockey (DJ), to spice up the evening.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, will on Tuesday, July 15th, flag off the rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme as part of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise of restoring potable water supply for domestic and industrial use in Aba and Umuahia.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by the Governor.

“In line with the Governor’s mandate to provide potable water supply to Aba and the state generally, the government has awarded the contract to Verna Carver Limited to revamp the scheme under the first phase of the project.

“Of course, we know that this forms part of the Governor’s campaign promises, and a major one indeed,” the Commissioner stated.

According to Prince Kanu, Governor Otti would on the same day also launch the Integrated WASH Accelerated Program (IWAP), an initiative designed to improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services across the State.

He added that Governor Otti would also commission a 150KVA Solar Power System with a 430KW battery storage capacity, pointing out that the facility is designed to power health centres with renewable energy, thereby reducing dependence on the national grid.

Prince Kanu explained that the Aba Regional Water Scheme, located within the CKC Church premises in Aba, is designed to provide safe and reliable water supply to a Aba’s residents.

He noted that the IWAP, situated at the newly constructed WASH facility at Okigwe Park, Umuahia, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by ensuring safe, sustainable, and readily available water and sanitation services.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, said that the water schemes to be rehabilitated in Aba include the Obohia Waterside, Obohia Water Intake, Ariaria Water Scheme, and the CKC Water Scheme.

He revealed that the first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed within six months, aims to restore the schemes’ capacity to produce well-treated water that meets World Health Organization standards.

Mr. Monday while pointing out that the state government is currently constructing about ten modern WASH facilities, disclosed that the rehabilitation of water schemes in Umuahia and its environs will commence later this year.

He noted that the newly installed 150KVA solar power system with 430KW battery storage at the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, will provide sufficient electricity for critical hospital facilities.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Mr. Matthew Ekwuribe, announced that the ministry is currently beautifying the FMC Gate and the Osisioma Flyover, and will soon begin erecting monuments at strategic locations across the state.

He added that the ministry has launched a Creative Talent Hunt across all 17 local government areas to discover and nurture promising talents and revealed that the Ministry is working closely with the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, and UNESCO to ensure that Aba is recognised as a Creative City.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti on Friday, launched the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project (ABSIID) with a commitment to deliver “results through partnerships”.

Under the new initiative, the African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the Canada-Africa Development Bank Climate Fund (CACF) are partnering with Abia State to execute critical projects across road rehabilitation, erosion control, and waste management.

Speaking at the event held at the Conference Hall, JAAC Building, Ogurube Layout, Governor Otti described the project as a major milestone in his administration’s plan to transform Abia’s infrastructure and economic landscape through strategic collaboration with international development partners.

Governor Otti while highlighting the benefits, noted that ABSIID would “fast-track the pace of job creation in Agriculture, Transportation and light manufacturing”, while erosion control measures would bring relief to communities threatened by gully erosion.

He also emphasised that the waste management component would open up fresh opportunities for investment and job creation, adding that the successful implementation of the framework will further attract businesses and investments, expand the state’s revenue base, and secure sustainable growth for future generations.

“Our faith in Abia shall be repaid across generations through increased volumes of economic output, a rising population of entrepreneurs and a community of healthy and educated people whose intellect and creativity will drive the next chapter of our development”, the Governor declared.

He expressed gratitude to the AfDB, IsDB and CACF for “believing in the enormous potential of the State as a new development front”, and acknowledged the support of the Federal Government, describing it as “the Primary Borrower”, for providing technical backing.

Governor Otti assured Abians that every fund received would be judiciously applied, promising that “the terms of agreement with the partners are very favourable and have taken the dynamics of our cultural realities into consideration”.

In his speech the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy Wale Edun, represented by Dr. Oyadele Akonde said that the initiative represents a significant growth in the collective efforts to drive economic growth, improve infrastructure and finance the quality of life for Abia State’s citizens.

He Commended Governor Otti for his unwavering commitment to the project since he assumed office and his provision of road infrastructure in Abia State.

In their goodwill messages, Director General of African Development Bank, Dr. Abdul Kalam (AfDB), the representative of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), affirmed their commitment to the project and assured that they would work together to achieve the aim of the partnership.

Earlier in an address, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti highlighted the importance of good road network which the project would provide, pointing out that the project would not only enhance transportation but reduce time and cost as well as create job across the state and thanked the Governor for his commitment to delivering dividends of democracy.

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has charged political office holders to embrace continuous learning, collaboration, and self-assessment to sustain the current momentum in governance by his administration, warning that underperformance would not be tolerated.

Governor Otti gave the charge, on Wednesday, while declaring open the Abia State Q2 2025 Executive Council Strategy Retreat at the International Conference Centre Umuahia with the theme: “Sustaining the Momentum: Leadership in Execution“.

The Governor who noted that the programme is critical and compulsory for every senior official in the public service value chain in Abia, added that outcomes from the retreat drive the whole-of- his government’s transformation agenda.

“These regular retreat sessions have been institutionalised to enable us to periodically assess ourselves, measure our progress vis-à-vis the relevant milestones that form the nucleus of our agenda, identify where we may have fallen short, and ultimately determine how to speed up things subject to the availability of resources.

“This programme is critical and compulsive for every senior official in the public service value chain in Abia, because the outcomes drive our whole-of-government transformation agenda”, he said.

Governor Otti who drew inspiration from biblical injunction about the tree that does not bear good fruit, underscored his administration’s zero tolerance stance for mediocrity.

“I need not remind anyone about the biblical injunction about trees that do not bear good fruits. I am sure you can complete that”, he said.

The Governor while commending his team for the progress made so far, stressed that his administration must never measure itself against the mediocrity of past governments but instead uphold higher standards.

He called on participants to take full advantage of the mentorship sessions lined up during the retreat, especially with members of the Global Economic Advisory Council who, according to him, “have graciously offered themselves to help us, given their varied experiences and their expertise.

“If you find yourself consistently underperforming, it is clearly not for lack of opportunities to improve, but rather a conscious choice”, the Governor cautioned.

He reminded participants that leadership is not about perfection but about the courage to “learn, unlearn, and relearn,” and described the learner’s mindset as the best pathway to meet modern governance demands.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, described the theme of the retreat as both an acknowledgement of success and a call to action

Prof Kanu emphasized that leadership in execution is the real test of credibility for any government.

The Umuahia Township Stadium was filled to capacity on Saturday, as dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to pay their final respects to the late Elder Mrs. Chinyere Margaret Ukeagu, who passed away at the age of 76.

Fondly known as “Mama CONNAK,” the late matriarch was the mother of Dr. Kenneth Nnamdi Ukeagu, National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) representing the South East and founder of the CONNAK Foundation.

The funeral ceremony attracted an array of high-profile guests, including the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti; Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Mbah; and the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas. The Governor of Imo State was represented by his Deputy, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, while the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Obila, represented the Ebonyi State Governor.

Also in attendance to bid the late Mrs Ukeagu farewell were Members of the National Assembly and former lawmakers, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu; Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe; and former Minister and prominent Abia son, Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah.

The Abia political class was also well represented, with the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 8th Abia State House of Assembly, members of the Assembly, State Executive Council members, political aides, government appointees.

The ceremony also drew captains of industry, business moguls, Traditional rulers, religious leaders, family members, friends, and well-wishers, members of the academic and professional communities, and other notable figures who came to honor the life and legacy of Elder Mrs. Ukeagu.

In his tribute on behalf of other South East Governors, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, while celebrating the life of the departed matriarch, described her as a pillar of compassion, faith, and a gift to her community, the State and the nation at large.

Governor Otti who said he was shocked upon receiving news of her death, noted that her life of 76 years was impactful.

“I want to start by thanking God for the gift of this woman that we popularly call Mama CONNAK, even though I was shocked when I learned of her departure on the 3rd of March this year. 

“Even though we cannot question the Almighty, we would have wished that she stayed long with us here and continue to be that luminous figure whose life was adorned with rare virtues of compassion, courage, faith and boundless generosity. 

“No doubt, her death is a huge loss to the family and all those she touched with her heart of gold.

“She was a woman of character, an affectionate mother and community mobiliser and a philanthropist who turned her pension and gratuity into lifeline for widows and ladders for the underprivileged to rise.

“Mama CONNAK lived not for herself, but as a light to her generation and a balm to many hearts. She gave not because she had plenty, but because she understood that giving is the truest expression of love”, God Otti noted. 

He encouraged the Ukeagu family to find strength in continuing the legacy of their mother, adding that; “the only gift you can give her today is to hold dear her legacies and continue from where she stopped”.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, in his tribute eulogized the late matriarch and her impact on her family and community, describing her as a woman of exceptional virtue and determination.

“Greatness is found in a woman who did not allow marriage to stop her dream. She went back to school after marriage and pushed until she got to the peak of her career.

“Greatness is more found in a woman who used her gratuity not for self-serve, not for her family but for her community in need of support for growth. Let the sun rise to her face as she walks into eternity”, Kalu said.

The first son of the deceased, Dr Ukeagu in his tribute, described his mother as a woman of deep faith and a true embodiment of practical Christianity, who possessed a strong desire to help others and devoted her life and resources to fulfilling that mission.

Dr. Ukeagu also pledged to uphold and preserve the legacy of compassion and service that his mother had built and appreciated all this who joined the family to honor and bid their beloved mother farewell.

Delivering the funeral oration, the first daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Carole Emeka-Sunday, described her mother as a “tireless advocate for humanity”,;who spent more than a decade of her life supporting the less privileged.

“Though we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life well lived, a life poured out in service to God and mankind”, she said.

Earlier in his sermon titled “You Need God,” Pastor David Bamigboye of Winners Chapel, Umuahia, urged attendees to seek God for fulfillment of destiny, noting that Mama CONNAK had a personal relationship with God during her lifetime.

“God has a great destiny for us and it is our linkage with God that will cause our destiny to shine”, the clergyman said.

Aged 76, Late Elder Mrs Chinyere Margaret Ukeagu is survived by four children including Barr. Chidiebere Ukeagu, a legal practitioner and employee of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Mr. Charles Ukeagu of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA).

Governor Otti who stated this while speaking at the anniversary lecture to mark his Two Years in office, titled “Two Years of Transformation: Sustaining the Momentum”, emphasized the importance of visionary leadership driven by ideas.

The Governor insisted that the progress recorded by his administration has created a new benchmark for governance in the state adding that it would be near impossible for any government to come in the future and give idle excuses of non-performance.

“For me, the highlight of our achievements in the last two years is the fact that we have brought the governance back, that no one will ever be permitted to take it down.

“It is either you are prepared to work for Abia with sincerity of purpose, or you remain in your comfort zone”.

“Having banished the ghost of delays or outright denial of salaries and pensions, improved urban sanitation, and tackled the challenge of poor road networks, it will be near impossible for any government to come in the future and give idle excuses of non-performance”, the Governor stated.

He noted that the people of Abia are now more engaged, informed, and resolute in demanding good governance, emphasizing that haven raised the bar of leadership in the State, no one would take Abia people for a ride going forward.

“The implication is that nobody will ever come here and take the people for a ride without the car going forward”, the Governor said.

Governor Otti used the occasion to highlight the central role of ideas in driving transformation, describing them as “the true capital”.

He said: “Ideas are the fundamental pillars of forming the critical structures of social and economic transformation. Nothing of significance was ever achieved without first being conceived in the mind”.

Governor Otti emphasized that his administration’s commitment to transparency and performance has inspired greater public participation among Abians in addition to positive feedback and reiterated the need for citizens to take responsibility for leadership choices.

Governor Otti further revealed that he has signed 18 new legislations into law, aimed at improving governance, unlocking economic potentials, and making government institutions more responsive.

The Governor noted that his administration has in the last two years corrected “the terrible injustice of the past”, adding that the remaining two years of his tenure would focus on “institutionalising the reforms that have been initiated”.

He said that the lecture was organized to allow the government and its people to “talk to ourselves, honestly,” evaluate our journey, and seek ways to improve, and thanked the guest speaker, Dr Kalu Idika-Kalu for his incisive presentation, noting that it lent credibility to the “scope of transformation happening in Abia”.

Earlier in his Keynote lecture, Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and economist, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, commended Governor Otti, for raising the governance bar in Abia and initiating bold economic reforms that are repositioning the State on the path of sustainable growth.

Reacting, former Member Representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluchi Ibeji, described the theme of the lecture as timely and mphasized the need for Governor Otti to sustain the momentum of his administration and ensure that the current administration’s achievements become the baseline for future leaders of the State.

“Let the standards be raised higher. We don’t want anyone to just stroll into governance in Abia again”, he stated.

The milestone celebration, held at his country home in Umuajata Olokoro, in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, brought together relatives, friends and well-wishers from across the country and beyond, who gathered to pay tribute to a man described by many as a pillar of wisdom, humility and integrity. The event began with a thanksgiving service, where heartfelt prayers and songs of praise echoed in gratitude for Oyibo Thompson’s life and enduring legacy.

Guests were later entertained with a colorful reception featuring traditional music, lively performances and a sumptuous feast.

Emotional tributes flowed freely as family members and long-time friends shared touching stories and fond memories that highlighted the celebrant’s journey through life, from his early years and professional achievements to his dedication to family and community.

In their goodwill messages, a former Senator who represented Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Chris Adighije, and the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, showered praises on Oyibo Thompson, describing him as a man of vision.

They noted that although he was not born with a silver spoon, Thompson remained focused on his goals, overcame numerous challenges and rose to become the highly respected figure being celebrated.

Both lawmakers described him as a God-fearing man, kind-hearted and a philanthropist par excellence, who has touched many lives through his acts of generosity. They wished him continued grace, good health and fulfillment in his life’s journey.

In his response, the octogenarian expressed deep gratitude to God, his family, and all who honored him with their presence. “I am overwhelmed with joy and thankful for the grace to witness this day,” he said, with visible emotion.

Oyibo Thompson expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love shown to him and his family, saying, “Regardless of our big history, I am grateful for the affection shown to me and my family. People came from far and wide to celebrate with me. This shows Nigerians love to appreciate each other.”

He used the occasion to reaffirm his support for the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which he described as “the greatest army we need.” He commended advocates of justice and those who give voice to the weak and voiceless in society.

Reflecting on the broader meaning of the celebration, Thompson said, “Today, we celebrate a symbol of triumph and hope. What I want us to take away from here is the enormous loss inflicted on humanity every day. A race is impoverished whenever it fails to give each child the opportunity to be himself, who his Almighty God has made him. That is where we fail woefully as a community, state, and nation”.

He recounted his own early struggles, noting how he nearly lost the opportunity for an education in 1962, when no one could raise 60 pounds for his school fees. “Every child who wants to go somewhere should be allowed to lead us. That was the case with me. When we had no money, the words from my mother, ‘I will support you,’ were what brought me here today. Let’s encourage every child, it might not be about money, but words of encouragement can go a long way”.

Thompson also offered a philosophical reflection on life and mortality, stating, “When we celebrate life, we should also celebrate death because life and death are like siamese twins. As we embrace each other in celebration, we should also bid each other farewell”, he remarked.

He, however, appreciated the guests for coming to celebrate with him.

In an interview, Mr Chinonso Umeh, who read the biography of Oyibo Thompson at the event, described his uncle as an enigma and a man with an indomitable spirit.

He credited Chief Thompson for playing a pivotal role in his personal and professional journey, stating that his success today is largely due to the guidance, mentorship and unwavering support he received from him and expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging that every good thing he enjoys today was as a result of Chief Thompson’s influence and encouragement.

Mr Umeh further celebrated the life and legacy of his Uncle, describing him as a beacon of hope, resilience, and unwavering conviction, praying God to keep watering him, just as he has watered others to success.

The event which continued late into the evening, was a clear indication that the celebration was not just about age, but about a life well-lived, a legacy of impact, and the love that surrounds a truly remarkable man.

Highpoint of the event was the cutting of the 80th birthday cake and the unveiling of two books, “Centuries of Igbo Civilization : Origin, Cosmology & Epistemology of The Igbo People written by the celebrant, as well as, “The Candle and The Wind:  Autobiography of Obi Barth Oyibo Thompson.

Aba Power Limited (APL), has announced readiness to begin large-scale metering across its power distribution network in Abia State and surrounding areas. The move is aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of electricity supply.

Metering which is a major device in power generation, is used to capture amd measure power consumption by individuals.

Addressing Newsmen shortly after the commissioning of the newly built 2×15 MVA Ogbor Hill Substation, an event  graced by the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Chief Operating Officer, Aba Power, Mr Blessing Ogbe, disclosed that APL is set to roll out over 5,000 meters within the first week of May, as part of a broader metering campaign.

According to him, the APL is commencing mass metering, whereby, free meters would be deployed to feeders. He said the power company has over 30 feeders with just six feeders completely covered with metering, that is, the first customer close to the injection substation, to the last customer in the terminal pole, a term he referred to as end to end.

“We aim to provide quality power supply and ensure that every customer under our feeders is properly metered. Previously, we had only 7,000 meters installed. Today, we have surpassed 60,000, and the process continues.

“We are out to give quality supply, so that our customers can be satisfied with our service. One of such ways, is to ensure those in our feeders are metered”, he explained.

According to Mr Ogbe, the areas benefiting from the initiative included, Owerrinta, Aba East, Aba Township, Guinness, World Bank, and Ehi Road, where their feeders are located.

“These feeders have been completed, we are going into mass metering program, which is bid to commence this month. Already, we are taking inventory of some meters, about 5000 will be arriving by Tuesday, the 6th of May, 2025.  We have 3000 meters on ground and the experts are already on ground”,he said.

Ogbe further hinted on the Mass metering program, describing it as a process of metering everyone in the feeder, starting from the first to the last customer. “If we have 5000 customers to a feeder for example, our mass metering program, is basically ensuring that the whole 5000 customers  are metered”.

Although, he said that there are alternatives for customers who cannot wait for the mass metering system, urging them to come their office for a guide on what to do.

The Chief Operating Officer, however, disclosed that there are three vendors in partnership with the Aba Power Limited for the supply of the meters. ” We are expecting the first 20,000 meters within the week, tomorrow we will take delivery of 5000 meters. Before the end of the month, we are to receive 40,000 meters”, Ogbe added.

On his part, the  Member representing Aba North State Constituency at the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon Aaron Uzodike, commended the efforts of the Aba Power station, especially on the area of mass metering.

Hon Aaron Uzodike, who is also the  Chairman of the House Committee on Power and Public Utilities, praised Aba Power for keeping its promise to commence metering in the month of May. He confirmed that more than 5,000 meters were ready for free distribution to residents.

He explained that when the power company was summoned at the Abia State House of Assembly, they hinted that they would begin mass metering by May. Hon Uzodike, expressed satisfaction that the Power company kept their words, affirming that over 5000 meters were already on ground to be distributed to Aba residents free of charge.

Addressing concerns over high tariffs, Hon Uzodike noted that the rates are set by the national regulatory body in charge of power and not Aba Power. However, he urged the company to introduce flexible payment plans and avoid billing customers who haven’t received electricity.

“We told APL to design a payment formula that can be easy for people to pay, perhaps splitting the bills. We mandated them not to bill anyone that was not supplied power. They, however, assured us of quality service delivery, but we are watching them”, he said.

His counterpart representing Aba Central State Constituency, Hon Stephen Akachukwu, also lauded Aba Power’s efforts, describing their progress as commendable.

Chief Emeka Okafor made the appeal while speaking with journalists in Umuahia, emphasizing that sustainable economic growth and social progress in the South-East can only be achieved through deliberate investment in modern infrastructure.

According to him, the South-East has long suffered infrastructural neglect, especially in the areas of road networks, industrial parks, power supply and rural development. He stressed that the SEDC must not be reduced to a political settlement platform but should focus on projects that would directly impact the lives of the people.

“The time for rhetoric is over. The South-East needs visible, strategic and transformative infrastructure that can unlock the region’s economic potential and empower our youths,” Okafor stated.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for finally inaugurating the commission and urged all members of the board, headed by the former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, to put aside political differences and work towards the common interest of the South East region.

Okafor, however, expressed confidence that Chief Emeka Wogu would effectively steer the affairs of the commission, citing his proven track record. He described Wogu as a well-known technocrat with a strong passion for progress and development, urging stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society organizations and the private sector, to collaborate with the commission to ensure that its projects are people-oriented and effectively implemented.

Recall that the South-East Development Commission was signed into law in 2023 and was tasked with the reconstruction and development of the South-East region, addressing its socio-economic challenges and promoting inclusive growth.
