A group of political stakeholders under the name Change-Abia Organisation has declared support for Governor Alex Otti’s second-term bid, saying his performance in office is the reason for their decision.

The group, led by former governorship candidate Regan Ufomba, made this known after a meeting with its leaders, executive members, local government coordinators, and representatives of its 197 affiliate groups.

The meeting took place at Ufomba’s residence, known as “Heaven is Real,” in Umuogele Ntigha.

In a statement released after the meeting, the group said its decision was based on Governor Otti’s achievements in his first 35 months in office.

The organisation, which includes the Association of Village Heads in Abia State and other affiliated groups, said Otti’s performance makes him one of the most impactful leaders in the state’s history.

They also stated that after reviewing other people interested in the governorship race, Otti still stands out as the most qualified. They advised others to reconsider spending time and resources on the election.

The group promised to mobilise strong support for Otti’s re-election in 2027, no matter their political party, saying he deserves another term to continue his development projects across the state.

Ufomba called on residents and stakeholders to support the governor, adding that even people outside Abia State have praised his work.

He mentioned key achievements of the administration, including road construction, transportation, urban renewal, and improved welfare for citizens.

Ufomba concluded by saying that based on his performance, Governor Otti has earned the right to seek re-election.

Dr. Meribole gave the assurance when he received members of the Ihenwekala Development Union, Umuahia Branch, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office. He said the administration of Alex Otti remains committed to improving the lives of citizens and has already recorded positive changes in the community since the Governor’s inspection visit last year.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, has described the civil service as the backbone of governance and a key driver of continuity in state development.

He made this known at a seminar organized by the Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries of Nigeria in Umuahia. The event focused on the role of the civil service in ensuring stable policies and growth in state building.

Dr. Meribole said the civil service plays an important role in maintaining stability in government policies. He noted that it helps in the proper implementation of government programmes and preserves records and experience needed for long-term development.

He added that the civil service is not limited to serving different administrations but also helps to translate government plans into real benefits for the people, thereby promoting good governance and development.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Elder O. I. Ozima, described the seminar as important. He thanked the SSG for attending and also commended Alex Otti for his leadership.

In her vote of thanks, Lady Chinedu Brown appreciated Governor Otti for ensuring the prompt payment of pensions, saying it has restored hope and dignity to retirees.

Lady Brown also praised the governor for the recent pension verification exercise and expressed hope that it will lead to the payment of outstanding gratuities and other entitlements.

She further commended the governor’s achievements in various sectors, saying his performance has attracted wide support. She described this growing acceptance as the “Alex Chioma Otti Phenomenon,” and expressed confidence that the administration will continue to deliver more benefits to the people of Abia State.

The post Civil Service Remains Backbone of Governance — Meribole first appeared on National Ambassador News.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has encouraged youths in the state to take advantage of recruitment opportunities in the Nigerian Army.

Speaking during the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) sensitization programme for the 91 Regular Recruits Intake, the Governor noted a significant surge in interest, with current applications already far exceeding the less than 500 recorded two years ago.

Represented by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, General Koko Essien, the Governor commended the Nigerian Army for the initiative and thanked local government council chairmen across the state for their massive mobilization efforts.

He emphasized that the military is a place for the fit and disciplined to excel, rather than a reformatory for the wayward.

“The military is a place to build leadership; it will not rebuild you,” the Governor remarked, urging local government chairmen to properly screen candidates and ensure they do not miss their allotted slots for effective representation.

The sensitization exercise also featured a high-powered delegation led by Brigadier General Moses Ikobah, who is spearheading the recruitment sensitization campaign across the South-South region.

Highlighting the Army’s commitment to balanced and equitable representation, General Ikobah noted that the journey, which began in Benin City and passed through Delta and Bayelsa, has now arrived in Uyo to ensure that Akwa Ibom youths are not left behind in this national call to duty.

General Ikobah revealed that for the 91 Regular Recruit Intake, the Nigerian Army intends to recruit a total of 14,000 personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

While Akwa Ibom State currently leads the South-South with 805 applications out of a nationwide pool of 48,988, the General described the figure as “modest,” expressing optimism that it could rise to at least 1,002 following the intensified sensitization drive.

“It is vital that Akwa Ibom is adequately and competitively represented to strengthen the state’s presence at the national level,” Brigadier General Ikobah noted.

On his part, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government and Chairman of ALGON, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, hailed the recruitment drive not only as a security necessity but also as a transformative career path for the state’s vibrant youth population.

He emphasized that the Nigerian Army offers a prestigious platform for young people in Akwa Ibom to channel their energy into national service while securing a stable and honorable future.

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO) in Akwa Ibom State, Policy Alert, has called for strengthened citizen engagement in governance at the local level.

The organisation noted that increased participation would improve service delivery and deepen accountability.

Idorenyin Eyo of Policy Alert made this known during a one-day town hall meeting on governance and citizen engagement, organised in partnership with Okobo Local Government and supported by the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF), held in Okobo.

Eyo expressed concern over the limited platforms available for youths and women in Okobo Local Government Area to engage with government officials, noting that this gap prompted Policy Alert to organise the town hall meeting to bridge it.

She said:
“Strengthening participatory governance at the local level remains critical to improving service delivery and deepening accountability. In many communities within Okobo Local Government Area, citizens—particularly youth and women—have limited access to structured platforms for engagement with public officials.

“This gap often leads to weak feedback mechanisms, reduced transparency, and low trust in governance processes. To address this challenge, Policy Alert partnered with Okobo Local Government Council to convene a one-day town hall meeting aimed at institutionalising citizen engagement and promoting inclusive service delivery.

“The engagement aligns with broader objectives of enhancing transparency, accountability, and grassroots participation in local governance.”

At the meeting, the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government, Hon. George, represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Mrs Veronica Clement, called for open and honest discussions. She emphasised the importance of collaboration between the local government and citizens in promoting transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery.

She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to sustaining inclusive governance practices through regular town hall meetings to strengthen collaboration with citizens and enhance service delivery.

Participants at the meeting highlighted several concerns, including the need to complete the Primary Healthcare Centre to improve access to quality healthcare services, as well as the establishment of financial institutions within the local government area.

They also raised concerns about the absence of an ICT centre in the community, noting that school leavers currently travel to the state capital to register for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations, creating financial and logistical burdens for families.

Additionally, participants pointed out the shortage of teachers at Community Secondary School, Okobo. According to them, the school currently has only six teachers serving approximately 800 students, negatively affecting the quality of education.

Responding, the Supervisor for Information, Mr Isaac Okon, acknowledged the concerns regarding teacher shortages and clarified that local governments do not have the constitutional mandate to recruit teachers directly. He added that the matter would be forwarded to the state government for necessary action.

On ICT development, Okon assured participants that the proposed 3,000-seat capacity facility would be completed before the end of the year. He noted that the centre is expected to provide young people with hands-on digital skills to participate effectively in the digital economy.

The high point of the event was the unveiling of a handbook titled “Improving Service Delivery in Local Government Administration: A Handbook for Communities and CSOs.”

Residents of the underserved community of Akeddei in Bayelsa State have expressed optimism as the long-awaited solar hybrid mini-grid project by All On nears completion.

The hybrid mini-grid project, powered by a $532,828 grant from All On an impact investing company was awarded to renewable energy firm Darway Coast Limited. It is expected to transform livelihoods, stimulate economic activity, and improve essential services in the riverine community upon completion.

Speaking with reporters, a resident, Willie David, described how poor electricity supply has crippled small-scale businesses in the area, while those still operating face exorbitant costs.

“Sometimes we go over four months without electricity. It has been very difficult for us here. Most business centres and other small-scale enterprises have folded up. Those of us who rely on generators daily are going through hell,” he said.

Other residents shared similar experiences, highlighting the hardship caused by unreliable power supply. However, they expressed hope that the completion of the solar hybrid mini-grid would bring lasting relief.

They also noted that the community has closely followed the project, not only because of its long-term benefits but also due to the involvement of local youths in its execution.

“Our local youths have been engaged in construction and site preparation, while Darway Coast Ltd has initiated training programmes for community-based operators who will handle technical and administrative functions after commissioning,” they said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Communications Lead at All On, Toun Odetola, described the Akeddei project as the second phase of the company’s electrification initiative in the Niger Delta. She noted that it is expected to deliver 1,058 electricity connections upon completion.

She added, “The objective of the Akeddei project, like many of the company’s investments, goes beyond installing energy infrastructure. It places strong emphasis on productive-use customers, including small businesses, artisans, and service providers whose activities depend heavily on reliable power supply.

“It is about enabling meaningful energy access that supports livelihoods, reduces dependence on expensive alternatives, and strengthens communities across the Niger Delta.”

According to her, the project is scheduled for commissioning in the second quarter of this year.

She further revealed that the initiative builds on the success of a pilot project in nearby Oweikorogha, where an 80kWp mini-grid exceeded its initial target of 430 connections, delivering electricity to 451 homes, businesses, and healthcare facilities—demonstrating the impact of decentralized renewable energy solutions in underserved communities.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Darway Coast Ltd, Henry Ureh, said the project reflects a long-term commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity in rural areas.

“With millions of households still lacking reliable grid power, mini-grids are increasingly seen as practical solutions for rural and riverine communities where extending the national grid is difficult and costly,” he said.

“We are confident that the people of Akeddei will experience measurable improvements in their quality of life, unlocking new economic opportunities for the community.”.

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has called for unity, cultural preservation, and moral rebirth as key drivers of sustainable development, stressing the vital role of traditional institutions in nation-building.

Emetu made the call on Saturday during the coronation ceremony of the Udumeze of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Paramountcy, Ezie Ohamoha Elder Awa Orji Udonsi. The event, held at Achichi in Ohafia Elu, Abia State, saw the Deputy Governor serve as Special Guest of Honour.

Speaking at the ceremony, Emetu described the occasion as more than a royal installation, noting that it symbolises the reaffirmation of a people’s identity, heritage, and shared values.

«“Today is not just about the crowning of a king; it is a reaffirmation of a people’s identity, heritage, and unity. A people who honour their traditions secure the strength of their future,” he said.»

He congratulated the monarch on his ascension, describing the throne as a sacred responsibility that demands wisdom, courage, and selfless service.

According to him, the Udumeze’s leadership will be crucial in fostering unity among the 26 villages that make up the Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, as well as advancing peace and development in the area.

Emetu reiterated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti recognises traditional rulers as strategic partners in governance, particularly in promoting grassroots development, security, and social stability.

On infrastructure, the Deputy Governor disclosed that efforts are underway to reconnect Ohafia and neighbouring communities to the national grid. He explained that the installation of poles and high-tension lines from Ihechiowa in Arochukwu Local Government Area to the Ebem Ohafia substation has commenced, alongside plans to replace obsolete transformers in phases.

He assured residents that stable electricity will soon be restored, noting that improved power supply will boost local businesses, increase productivity, and create opportunities for youths and small-scale enterprises.

The Deputy Governor also stressed the need for moral reawakening, warning that meaningful development cannot thrive amid rising social vices. He referenced a recent re-orientation summit in Ohafia which addressed issues such as drug abuse, cultism, vandalism, and declining moral values.

He urged the new monarch to use his influence to promote discipline, youth engagement, and community cohesion.

«“Your throne is pivotal in this moral reawakening. Your voice carries authority, and your leadership can help redirect the energies of our youths toward productivity and purpose,” he added.»

Chairman of the occasion, Nnanna Eke Okpo, pledged support for the Udumeze, assuring that the people of Ohafia would stand firmly behind the throne. He advised the monarch to uphold integrity, promote peace, and remain vigilant against divisive influences.

Earlier, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Okechukwu Uma Kalu, expressed gratitude for the successful hosting of the event, describing it as a historic celebration of the culture and unity of the Ohafia people.

In his address, the Udumeze, Awa Orji Udonsi, thanked God and the people for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, justice, and cultural preservation. He pledged to strengthen traditional institutions, enhance security, and promote inclusive development across the kingdom.

The event featured the unveiling of the monarch’s official portrait by the Deputy Governor and was attended by prominent political leaders, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and community stakeholders from across the state and beyond.

The Esit Eket Grassroots Network (EGN) in Akwa Ibom State has distanced itself from the controversial position of the Ekid People’s Union (EPU), while declaring support for the second-term ambitions of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Umo Eno, and Okpolupm Ikpong Etteh.

At a well-attended stakeholders’ meeting held over the weekend, the group described the EPU’s recent publication titled “Why Ekid Will Not Support Hon. Okpolupm Ikpong Etteh and Any Other Ibeno Candidate” as misleading, divisive, and unrepresentative of the collective will of the Ekid people.

In a communiqué, the EGN stated that the EPU does not speak for the entire Ekid nation, emphasizing that its views are limited to its members and should not be misconstrued as a unified position.

“The attempt to generalize its stance as the collective will of the people is misleading and unacceptable,” the group declared.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic ideals, the group stressed that leadership should be determined by competence, performance, and service delivery—not ethnic or sectional sentiments.

“Citizens have the constitutional right to freely choose their preferred candidates without coercion or propaganda,” the communiqué added.

The group commended Rep. Okpolupm Etteh’s track record in the Eket Federal Constituency, highlighting his achievements in youth empowerment, human capital development, and consistent engagement with constituents. It noted that his accessibility and responsive representation have set a benchmark worthy of continuity.

In a decisive move, the group passed a motion endorsing the second-term bids of President Tinubu, Governor Eno, and Rep. Etteh, describing them as critical to sustaining ongoing development efforts at the federal, state, and constituency levels.

The motion was moved by Rt. Hon. Okon Edoho Udo, a former Transition Chairman of Esit Eket, and seconded by Chief Victor Dan Ikot, a former Secretary of the Local Government Area.

The meeting, convened and chaired by SCS Martin Edet Umoyo, drew a broad spectrum of political stakeholders, including former office holders, community leaders, and immediate past Chapter and Ward Executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Esit Eket.

Notable attendees included Rt. Hon. Okon Edoho Udo, Chief Victor Dan Ikot, Chief Udo Thompson, Dr. Ekanem Friday John, Emmanuel Nsoh, Mrs. Mercy Joseph Sam, Aniefiok Cobb, Samuel Ehoho Udo, Hon.

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has called on residents to come out in large numbers to welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his visit to the state on April 10, 2026.

The governor made this call during an Easter Sunday service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, his hometown in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. He described the president’s visit as an important event for Bayelsa and a chance for the people to show their hospitality.

He said the projects that will be opened during the president’s one-day visit are very important for the state’s development. According to him, these projects will help boost the economy and improve the lives of the people.

Governor Diri also prayed for unity among Bayelsans. He said peaceful living has always been an important value of the Ijaw people.

Speaking about Easter, Governor Diri reminded people of the importance of love and unity. He said the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ teach people to love one another and live in peace.

Many top government officials attended the church service, including the governor’s wife, deputy governor, lawmakers, and other political leaders.

The people of Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have vowed to surpass the vote count of Nsit Ubium, the home local government of Governor Umo Eno, in the 2027 elections.

They made this declaration during the inauguration of the Ini Chapter of the Arise with Renewed Hope Initiative (AWRHI), a socio-political movement aimed at galvanizing support for the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno.

Speaking at the event, the President-General of the movement, Engr. Uwem Okoko, said the people of Ini had mandated him to convey their “electoral resolve” to the Governor.

He noted that the Governor’s developmental footprints in Ini Local Government Area including road construction, model primary schools, and a modern healthcare centre—have made the task of mobilizing electoral support seamless.

In his welcome address, the Executive Chairman of Ini LGA and Chapter Coordinator of AWRHI, Hon. Inibehe Umah, stated that the area has embraced peace and would maintain it throughout the election period.

“Ini was once known as a flashpoint for electoral violence. But in the next election, there will be nothing of that sort because we are now united. We will go to the polls peacefully to cast our votes,” Umah said.

The Chairman also demonstrated his commitment to the “Arise Agenda” by distributing a total of 120 million in empowerment grants to men, women, and youths across the local government, aimed at cushioning economic hardship and stimulating local growth.

Setting the tone, the Deputy Coordinator of the movement and former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko, emphasized that the state is enjoying a new era of peace.

“We have come with a message of peace. No Akwa Ibom son or daughter will fight one another again.

“We will mobilize substantial votes for the President, the Senate President, and the Governor,” Uko stated.

Similarly, the member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, assured that the prevailing unity in the constituency would prevent any division of votes.

On her part, the International Director of Women AWRHI, Dr. Glory Edet, declared that women in the area would remain steadfast, pledging their full support for the Tinubu-Akpabio-Eno alliance.

To drive the 2027 agenda, a 31-member Coordinating Committee was inaugurated, with Hon. Inibehe Umah as Coordinator, Mrs. Comfort Christopher as Deputy Coordinator, and Barr. James Ndem as Secretary.

A 39-member Advisory Council was also constituted, chaired by the Political Leader of Ini, Prof. Ini Udoka, who described the Governor’s developmental strides in Ini Local Government Area as unprecedented, expressing confidence that Ini would deliver overwhelming votes in the next election.

Other dignitaries present at the event included the member representing Ini State Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Udoide; Honorary Special Adviser to the Governor, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Bassey; and Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth (Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency), Sir Charles Udofia. All reaffirmed their constituents’ commitment to the renewed political alliance.

Residents of Nsit Atai, Okobo, Oron, and Eket Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State have expressed excitement over Governor Umo Eno’s recent improvements in rural road infrastructure across the state.

Speaking during an inspection visit by some of the Governor’s aides, led by the Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation, Dr. Essien Ndueso, community members highlighted the economic and social benefits they have experienced since the construction of these roads.

The inspection covered several projects, including the 14.5 km Nsit Atai Okobo Road, the 13.5 km Okopedi Uya Oron Road with a 60-meter bridge, the 2.4 km Ukpong and Effiong Essang Streets, and the 2.4 km Ikot Akpa Ikpo Urua Udoinyang Road in Eket.

Chief Afia Johnson Ubom Ekpenyong, speaking on behalf of the Village Head of Ikot Akpa Ikpo, expressed deep appreciation to the Governor for bringing development to the community. He noted that the road project covers four villages in the Okon area of Eket and will improve business activities, especially at the busy Udo Udoinyang Market.

He also assured the Governor of the community’s continued support, including for his second-term ambition, as a way of appreciating the positive impact of the projects.

Similarly, Comrade Afia Jeremiah, a youth leader in Ikot Akpa Ikpo, explained that the 2.4 km road project was started under the previous administration of Deacon Udom Emmanuel in 2021 but has now been completed by Governor Umo Eno.

According to him, “The road has opened up the area for more economic activities. Before now, motorcycles and vehicles could not pass safely. Today, people from neighboring communities in Onna can easily come into Eket to trade, as seen at the Udo Udoinyang Market.”

In Nsit Atai, a community leader from Ikot Asua, Chief Usen, also thanked the Governor for upgrading the Nsit Atai Okopedi Road. He described how difficult it was to access the road before the construction.

“This road was so bad that even bicycles could not pass. Now we have a dual carriageway and a roundabout. Everyone in the community is proud of this administration,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Richard Pascal, a resident of Ikot Asua, said he is proud to mention his community anywhere because of the many development projects carried out under Governor Eno.

In his remarks, Dr. Essien Ndueso, alongside the Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Emma Akpabio, and the Special Assistant on Entertainment, Mr. Moses Eskor, recalled that the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Aniekan Umanah, had earlier announced that over 10 road projects by Governor Eno will be commissioned before May 29, 2026.

Dr. Ndueso emphasized that the Governor is committed to inclusive infrastructure development across the state.

“The Governor has made significant progress in both inherited and new rural road projects. Instead of focusing only on the capital, he has prioritized rural communities, ensuring that development reaches underserved areas. These roads are improving daily life and creating economic opportunities by connecting communities to markets,” he said.

He also noted that the Governor remains committed to the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport project and expressed confidence that it will soon become a reality. He added that the state’s International Airport is expected to be officially opened next month, marking another major step toward economic growth and global connectivity.

Mr. Akpabio further stated that the Governor has kept his campaign promises by improving the welfare of the people and delivering visible development across the state.

Residents of Okwuta Ibeku Autonomous Community in Umuahia are optimistic about the ongoing construction of the Umuafai Lodu Ahieke Okwuta Isieke Ibeku Ring Road. The project, flagged off in January 2025 by Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, is expected to improve transportation and boost economic activities in the area.

The contract for the road was awarded to Craneburg Construction Company, which has deployed skilled engineers, workers, and modern equipment to ensure the project meets high standards. Quality materials such as bitumen, gravel, sand, cement, and stones are being used to guarantee durability.

A key feature of the road is its well-planned drainage system, designed to manage rainwater and prevent flooding. The system will protect homes, farms, and public spaces while also extending the lifespan of the road and reducing future maintenance costs.

The ring road is strategically important as it links the community to the local timber market, a major commercial hub. Once completed, it is expected to boost trade, raise property values, and create more opportunities for residents and businesses.

Currently, the construction has reached the base course stage, where crushed stones are laid to provide strength and distribute traffic loads evenly. Only two stages remain: the wearing course and finishing touches, including road markings.

Speaking on the project, Engr. Anthony Chima Onukwubiri, President-General of Okwuta Autonomous Community, thanked Governor Otti for approving the road and urged contractors to complete it before the peak of the rainy season.

Mrs. Happiness Ebere, Chairperson of the Women’s Wing, praised the state government for its attention to the community and promised continued support. She appealed to the construction company to speed up work, noting that residents are currently facing heavy dust from the ongoing construction.

Responding, Engr. Yusuf, Project Manager at Craneburg Construction Company, assured residents that the firm is committed to completing the project on schedule and maintaining high construction standards until the road is finished.

Once completed, the Umuafai Lodu Ahieke Okwuta Isieke Ibeku Ring Road is expected to improve mobility, boost economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents of Okwuta Ibeku and neighboring communities.

The recent All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention drew criticism from many Nigerians, largely due to complaints from some delegates, teargassing, accommodation issues, and other logistical challenges.

While some of these situations may seem amusing, they are not unusual for a political event of this scale. Despite dissatisfaction among many citizens with the ruling APC, the scenes witnessed at the Abuja convention are common in large national programs of any political party in Nigeria.

Crowd control is never easy. Managing large groups of people is always challenging, even when organizers make proper arrangements. Human behavior is unpredictable, and such situations can occur in any setting where many people gather.

The convention should not be seen as a show of shame or evidence of incompetent leadership. The issues observed were not signs of poor planning or a haphazardly organized event. The challenges arose largely from an overflow of participants something that could happen to any political party during a crowd-attracting event.

Nigerians should not view the APC convention as a disgrace simply because it did not meet expectations.

Historically, such chaos is not unique to the APC. For example, in 2006, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward congresses were marred by irregularities and crises. Clashes among party leaders led to parallel congresses in some states. In Opokuma, Bayelsa State, a police officer was allegedly shot dead during the November 4, 2006 congress. Aspirants hijacked exercises in several states, resulting in violence.

Even in Abia State, the late Vincent Ogbulafor, former PDP National Chairman, revealed that the congress in Umuahia North was disrupted by violence reportedly sponsored by a gubernatorial aspirant. In Kwara State, the congress was allegedly hijacked to favor Bukola Saraki, former Senate President.

The APC may have its shortcomings, but Nigerian politics is inherently dynamic. The country has not yet reached a stage where large political events can be entirely free of disorder. Our political process continues to experience fraud and occasional violence. Politics has moved beyond being just a game; it now involves complex challenges that test party structures and leadership.

For Nigerian politics to mature, political parties need stronger ideologies and better internal structures rather than relying solely on personalities or power struggles. With these reforms, party politics in Nigeria could become more orderly, fair, and well-practiced.

The Abia State Police Command has recorded significant breakthroughs in its ongoing fight against crime, with the arrest of multiple suspects involved in offences ranging from armed robbery and murder to child theft and unlawful possession of firearms.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the arrests were made through intelligence-led operations carried out across various parts of the state.

Illegal Firearms and Robbery Activities Foiled

Operatives of the Serious Crime Investigation Squad (SCISSORS) apprehended two suspects, Isaac Emeahara (36) and Michael John (58), on March 19, 2026.

The duo was reportedly conducting illegal stop-and-search operations aimed at robbing and extorting motorists. Recovered from them were two cut-to-size double-barrel guns, two single-barrel guns, and two live cartridges. They have since been charged to court and remanded.

Similarly, a 26-year-old suspect, Ogwo PraiseGod Onodiugo, was arrested in Isuochi while attempting to rob a passerby. Police recovered a revolver pistol, ammunition, and a mobile phone from him.

The suspects have been charged to court and remanded in custody.

Defilement Case Sparks Manhunt

A 27-year-old suspect, Ebere Christian Sunday, was arrested for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl alongside two accomplices who are currently at large.

The victim was reportedly threatened with a knife. The suspect has confessed, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplices.

The Abia State Police Command has presented welfare cheques totaling over ₦11.9 million to the families of fallen officers, while also highlighting significant achievements in the fight against crime across the state.

Addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Umuahia on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, stated that the event was in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and formed part of activities marking National Police Day.

The Commissioner disclosed that a total of eleven Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare cheques, amounting to ₦11,960,204.88, were presented to the families of police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“These cheques are meant to provide support to the families of our fallen heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation,” he said.

CP Isa also took the opportunity to update the media on the Command’s performance in addressing crime and ensuring public safety in Abia State.

From January 2026 to date, the Command has recorded 142 criminal cases, leading to the arrest of 226 suspects. Many of these cases have been investigated, charged to court, and are currently at various stages of prosecution, with suspects remanded in correctional facilities.

On the issue of cultism, the Commissioner reported that 13 cult-related cases had been handled, resulting in the arrest of 23 suspects. All suspects have been arraigned and remanded, with 32 firearms recovered during the operations. He also noted that five additional cult-related cases are currently under investigation.

The Police Commissioner emphasized that the Command’s intelligence-driven operations have led to the rescue of trafficked and stolen children, the recovery of 46 firearms of various types, and 16 rounds of ammunition. He also stated that several criminal networks operating within the state have been dismantled.

“These ongoing efforts have significantly reduced crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, defilement, rape, child trafficking, unlawful possession of firearms, theft, burglary, and advance fee fraud,” he said.

CP Isa also pointed out that the Command had successfully recovered stolen vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles, while rescuing several kidnapped victims. Additionally, bags containing substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and other illicit drugs were seized during operations.

Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, the Commissioner assured residents that proactive policing strategies would continue to ensure a safe and secure environment for socio-economic activities to thrive.

He urged the public to support the Police by providing credible information that would aid ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

The Commissioner concluded by reaffirming the Command’s dedication to professionalism and service in line with global policing standards.

Speaking on behalf of the families of fallen officers, Miss Nwaogu Grace Chidera expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force for the welfare support, describing it as a source of relief and hope.

“This gesture means a great deal to our family as it provides us with something to lean on despite the loss of my late mother, Mrs. Florence,” she said. “We thank the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the officers of the Abia State Command for their care, support, and commitment, especially during this time of grief.

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has advised students to remain committed to their academic pursuits and steer clear of social vices, while commending Builder Dr. Chukwu Kalu for his generosity and dedication to improving lives.

He gave the advice during the birthday celebration of the philanthropist, held at his residence in Amurie Nkporo, Ohafia Local Government Area.

The Deputy Governor described Dr. Kalu as a man endowed not only with the capacity to create wealth but also with a rare passion for giving, attributing both qualities to divine grace.

Emetu urged beneficiaries of the scholarship and empowerment programmes to reciprocate the gesture by focusing on their studies and avoiding activities such as cultism and drug abuse.

“The best way to appreciate this gesture is by remaining focused on your studies and staying away from all forms of nefarious activities,” he said.

He also praised the administration of Governor Alex Otti, noting that Abia State has experienced significant transformation under his leadership. He called on residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the electoral process.

“INEC will not count prayer points but our votes. If we want the new Abia to continue, we must support good governance,” he added.

In his remarks, the celebrant, Builder Dr. Chukwu Kalu, described the occasion as a milestone, expressing gratitude to God for His blessings and for the opportunity to give back to society. He reaffirmed his commitment to investing in education and youth empowerment.

Dr. Kalu, Chief Executive Officer of Concrete Divine Accessories Nigeria Construction Company, marked his birthday with a humanitarian outreach through his Build a Delta Foundation, targeting the less privileged and vulnerable.

He noted that birthdays, for him, are moments of reflection and opportunities to positively impact lives rather than mere celebrations.

“I see birthdays as a day to reflect on how far God has brought you and to show love to deserving people,” he said.

In their goodwill messages, the Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Hon. Eleanya Oju Kalu, and a former mayor, Chief David Ogba Onuoha, congratulated the celebrant and acknowledged his visible impact across communities.

They also commended the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, noting that it has inspired individuals to contribute meaningfully to societal development.

They stressed that investing in children remains a lasting legacy.
