Chairman of Chairmen (PDP) in the Rainbow Coalition, Barrister Emeka Onyenso, described the gathering as historic, saying it was one of the rare occasions where members of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party jointly supported a grassroots empowerment programme in Abia State.

Earlier, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Chief Chidiebere Ihenyirimmadu, commended Erondu Jnr for his sustained commitment to grassroots empowerment, recalling that he had organised a similar initiative barely three months earlier.

Other speakers at the event included APC chieftain Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Anyim, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Christopher O. Enweremadu and former member of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, all of whom praised the lawmaker for promoting unity and improving the welfare of his constituents.

Former Abia State Governor and Nigerian Ambassador-designate to Spain, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, was represented at the event by his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Nkechi Carol Ikpeazu.

The programme highlighted the growing role of grassroots empowerment initiatives in improving the livelihoods of citizens while fostering political collaboration across party lines in Abia State.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured residents that ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja will proceed at full pace despite increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday after inspecting key road projects, including the Federal Highway 105 to Kuje town and the Kuje–Gwagwalada dualization, the Minister dismissed concerns that governance could be slowed by electioneering.

Wike emphasized that the administration remains focused on delivering its mandate, noting that project execution would not be affected by political distractions.

“It is feasible. Work must continue. Contractors are not part of the elections. People must work and earn a living. We will not suspend development projects because of political activities,” he said.

He added that significant progress has already been made, expressing confidence that more than 80 percent of planned infrastructure targets would be achieved before the peak of the election season.

The Minister further disclosed that contractors handling the Kuje axis projects have committed to completing and handing over the roads by the end of May 2026. He explained that the projects form part of a broader strategy to ease congestion in Abuja’s city centre and improve connectivity to satellite towns.

On funding, Wike clarified that the FCT Administration is currently operating under the 2025 budget, which has been extended until June, while the proposed 2026 budget—covering the second phase of the Kuje–Gwagwalada road—is awaiting approval by the National Assembly.

Addressing criticisms from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who recently questioned the impact of the current administration’s policies, Wike dismissed the remarks as politically motivated.
He challenged the former Vice President to compare the present state of infrastructure in the FCT with what was achieved during his time in office, arguing that current developments speak for themselves.

The Minister also denied allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that the administration interfered with its convention arrangements, including claims of blocking venue access.

Wike described the accusations as unfounded and called on the party to provide evidence to support its claims.

“I have no involvement in their activities. If they have proof of interference, they should present it,” he said.

The FCT Administration maintains that its priority remains the delivery of critical infrastructure and services to residents, regardless of the political climate.

Abia State College of Health Science and Management Technology (ABSCOHMAT), Aba, Abia state, has matriculated over 2,000 students at its 16th matriculation ceremony held at the college pavilion, marking a historic milestone in the institution’s growth.

The event was notable for the introduction of new programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Hardware Engineering, expanding the college’s academic offerings into emerging technology fields. The management also described the turnout as the highest number of matriculants in the institution’s history.

In his address, the Rector, Mr. Aloysius Okezie, welcomed the new students and charged them to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to academic excellence. He urged them to pursue skills that would make them globally competitive while remaining locally relevant.

He also warned against social vices including cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, negative peer influence, and examination malpractice, stressing that offenders would face strict disciplinary action.

Commending the Abia State Government led by Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, the Rector lauded the ongoing reforms in the education sector, particularly the regular payment of salaries and infrastructural interventions. He noted that government support had enabled the retrofitting of 22 buildings, which has repositioned the institution for improved learning and expanded academic programmes, including Dialysis Technician Technology, Prosthetics and Orthotics Technology, and Biomedical Engineering Technology.

Okezie, however, appealed for government approval of a staff employment waiver, explaining that most of the college’s lecturers currently operate on contract and part-time arrangements. He said full-time recruitment would significantly enhance academic delivery and institutional performance.

Representing the governor, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, commended the Rector and management for transforming the institution into a hub for skills acquisition and professional development. He assured that the government and legislature would continue to support initiatives that strengthen the college.

Emeruwa charged the matriculating students to remain focused and avoid acts capable of damaging their future and the reputation of their families, the institution, and the state.

In their goodwill messages, Dr. Chriatopher K. Okoro of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba, the General Manager, Abia Newspapers and Publishing Corporation (ANPC), Hon.

Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has secured land for the construction of its permanent National Secretariat, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the association’s institutional structure and long-term sustainability.

The development was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ National Executive, led by its National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, to the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya.

Speaking during the visit, Ibrahim revealed that NAWOJ has obtained the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the land located in the Federal Capital Territory after completing all statutory requirements.

She explained that the acquisition process involved strict compliance with regulatory procedures, including submission of formal authorization, minutes and attendance records of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, as well as other corporate and identification documents. According to her, the NEC had formally mandated the leadership to pursue the land acquisition.

Ibrahim noted that despite bureaucratic challenges, the association successfully concluded the process through coordinated internal efforts and timely interventions from stakeholders. She disclosed that a total of ₦1,597,000 was spent to secure the Certificate of Occupancy.

The NAWOJ chairperson expressed appreciation to individuals and institutions that facilitated access to relevant authorities and supported the successful completion of the process.

She described the land acquisition as a strategic investment aimed at strengthening the association’s institutional capacity and enhancing the welfare of women journalists across the country. She added that plans are already underway to commence development on the site in order to deliver a functional national secretariat within the shortest possible time.

Ibrahim also commended the NUJ President for his earlier intervention that helped NAWOJ retain its national secretariat during a period of financial difficulty.

In his remarks, Yahaya described the acquisition of the land and the securing of the Certificate of Occupancy as a landmark achievement and a lasting legacy for the association.

He congratulated the NAWOJ leadership and women journalists nationwide, reaffirming NUJ’s commitment to sustained collaboration and institutional support. He also urged the association to fast-track development of the site through strategic partnerships.

The visit further highlighted the longstanding relationship between NAWOJ and NUJ, built on a shared commitment to promoting the welfare, unity, and professional development of journalists in Nigeria.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for creating a business-friendly environment that facilitated a landmark partnership between HyperCity and Carrefour.

Gbajabiamila made the remarks while representing Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the franchise signing ceremony held in Abuja, describing the agreement as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economy and investment climate.

He said the partnership reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to attracting global investment and strengthening the country’s retail sector.

According to him, the FCT Minister played a key role in enabling the collaboration, noting that Wike’s business-oriented approach to governance is already yielding tangible results for the nation’s capital.

“This collaboration is a direct testament to the Minister’s commitment to transforming Abuja’s economic and physical landscape,” Gbajabiamila said.

The Chief of Staff added that although the partnership is starting in Abuja, it represents Nigeria’s broader emergence as a leading investment destination in Africa.

He noted that the initiative is expected to trigger a wider retail transformation across the country, with expansion plans already targeting major cities including Lagos.

“Abuja is sowing the seed, but that seed will grow into a tree with branches across Nigeria,” he added.

Gbajabiamila also urged the international business community to view Nigeria not only as a large consumer market but also as a stable base for long-term investment under the current administration.

In his remarks, Managing Director of HyperCity Supermarket, Sunny Chuwla, described the partnership with Carrefour as a major catalyst for economic growth.

Chuwla said the collaboration is expected to attract significant investments, create employment opportunities, and expand market access for local producers.

He explained that the agreement would accelerate the development of modern retail infrastructure, with immediate plans to open new stores in Abuja and other major cities nationwide.

According to him, the partnership aims to combine global retail standards with local enterprise to deliver improved shopping experiences and quality products for Nigerian consumers.

Chuwla noted that Nigeria has evolved from a market of potential to one of proven opportunity, citing the company’s steady growth since launching its first store in Port Harcourt in 2022.

As part of the expansion strategy, the partnership will begin with the rebranding of existing Port Harcourt outlets under the Carrefour brand, with plans for broader national rollout in the coming years.

The development further positions Abuja as an emerging retail hub and reinforces Nigeria’s attractiveness as a destination for global investment.

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has initiated a strategic partnership with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) aimed at promoting women’s economic empowerment through Nigeria’s industrial raw materials sector.

The collaboration, which will be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is expected to strengthen joint efforts in research, innovation, and inclusive economic participation, while creating sustainable opportunities for women.

The development was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ FCT leadership to the Director-General of RMRDC, Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, the NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Bassey Ita Ikpang, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of women and children. She emphasised the critical role of the media in promoting national development and social transformation.

Ikpang noted that the chapter comprises about 350 practising female journalists across print, electronic, and digital media platforms within the FCT, all committed to professionalism, visibility, and impactful advocacy.

She highlighted some of the association’s recent initiatives, including a capacity-building programme organised in collaboration with the German Embassy Abuja to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The chairperson also announced plans for a grassroots outreach programme titled “Marketplace Advocacy,” scheduled for April 30. The initiative aims to engage women at the grassroots level on issues such as health, education, and democratic participation, particularly ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections.

According to her, the programme will simplify government policies, encourage greater female participation in the electoral process, and promote awareness of women’s health needs.

Ikpang commended the leadership of RMRDC and praised Prof. Ike-Muonso for strengthening local raw materials development and promoting value addition, noting that such initiatives are crucial to Nigeria’s industrial growth and reducing reliance on imports.

“As media professionals, we are strategically positioned to amplify the council’s initiatives and ensure wider visibility for its programmes,” she said.

She also announced the appointment of Prof. Ike-Muonso as Patron of NAWOJ FCT, citing his leadership and commitment to inclusive development.

In his response, Ike-Muonso commended NAWOJ for its advocacy efforts and reaffirmed the council’s dedication to promoting industrial growth, local resource utilisation, and innovation for sustainable development.

He expressed confidence that the proposed MoU would strengthen raw materials development and value addition in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The RMRDC Director-General also pledged full support for the implementation of the partnership and NAWOJ’s upcoming Marketplace Advocacy initiative.

The visit concluded with the formal decoration of Ike-Muonso as Patron of NAWOJ FCT in recognition of his leadership and contributions to inclusive national development.

As political activities gradually begin to shape the build-up to the 2027 general elections in Abia State, discussions around credible candidates for key elective positions are gaining momentum. Within the Labour Party (Nigeria), many political observers and grassroots supporters believe that Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, popularly known as Ofuji, remains one of the strongest prospects for the party’s ticket for the Bende Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

Supporters argue that Anyaso combines political capacity, grassroots appeal, youth connection and broad stakeholder engagement, qualities they say are essential for consolidating the party’s growing support base in Bende Federal Constituency. Over the years, he has built a network of relationships across communities in the constituency, earning recognition for his engagement with young people, women and community leaders.

Beyond the political arena, Anyaso is widely known for community-oriented initiatives aimed at supporting small businesses, empowering youths and assisting vulnerable members of society. These efforts, according to supporters, have strengthened his connection with local communities and positioned him as a figure associated with service-driven leadership.

Political analysts note that as the reform-driven administration of Alex Chioma Otti continues to generate public interest in governance within the state, the Labour Party will require candidates who can sustain and expand that momentum at the federal level. For many party faithful, Anyaso represents a candidate capable of translating the governor’s governance narrative into electoral success in Bende.

His supporters also point to what they describe as his strategic political structure and credibility among grassroots voters, arguing that these factors could help the party maintain its influence in the constituency and strengthen its prospects ahead of the next electoral cycle.

While the party’s internal nomination processes are still some time away, conversations within political circles in Abia increasingly highlight the importance of fielding candidates with strong local acceptance and development-focused credentials. For many of his supporters, the message remains clear: effective representation for Bende will depend on credible leadership, and they believe Anyaso offers that possibility.

The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, has reaffirmed the council’s decision to clamp down on unregistered commercial motorcycle operators as part of efforts to strengthen security and accountability in the area.

Wobodo disclosed that enforcement of the directive began this week, with security agencies arresting and prosecuting riders who failed to comply with earlier instructions to register with the local government.

Charles Wobodo

Speaking in an interview with reporters, the council chairman said the action became necessary after several warnings and adequate time were given to operators to regularize their status. He noted that although the directive was issued in February, many riders ignored the call to register.

According to him, the profiling exercise is designed to create a comprehensive database of commercial motorcycle operators across Ikwerre, enabling authorities to easily identify riders, track movements when necessary, and respond effectively to crimes linked to the sector.

He warned that any operator found operating without proper registration, valid identification, or the approved reflective jacket would face arrest and prosecution.

Wobodo linked the enforcement to rising security concerns involving motorcycle riders, citing incidents in Iguruta community that prompted stricter regulations on Okada operations.

“We announced since February that all Okada riders in Ikwerre Local Government should come forward for proper documentation. They are required to provide their details and a referee who will stand for them. Unfortunately, many have refused to comply, which is why enforcement has now begun,” he said.

The chairman emphasized that the registration exercise remains completely free, dismissing fears that the process may involve hidden charges.

“This exercise is free of charge. The objective is to ensure security within Ikwerre. When crimes occur, authorities must be able to trace those responsible and take appropriate action. This is about protecting our people,” Wobodo added.

The registration and profiling exercise gained momentum in March following the council’s decision to ban motorcycle operations between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily.

The restriction came after the killing of Samuel Nchelem in February 2026, an incident allegedly involving a commercial motorcycle rider in Iguruta.

While acknowledging that the measures may pose temporary challenges for some operators, Wobodo appealed for cooperation, urging all affected riders to comply with the directive to avoid sanctions.

The council maintained that the enforcement drive is a critical step toward restoring public confidence, improving safety, and ensuring that only properly identified and accountable operators are allowed to operate within the commercial motorcycle sector in Ikwerre.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has attributed the recent damage at the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja to a severe windstorm, dismissing reports that the facility suffered a structural collapse.

Speaking to journalists on Monday after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital city, Wike explained that only the roofing of the terminal was affected, while the main structure remains intact.

According to the minister, the intensity of the windstorm, which occurred during a heavy rainfall, was unusually strong and powerful enough to dislodge the steel roofing sheets of the terminal situated on an elevated hill.

“The kind of wind we experienced was something we had never imagined. The terminal is located on top of a hill, higher than surrounding structures. The wind blew off the roofing sheets, but the main structure was not affected,” he said.

Wike dismissed calls for sanctions against the contractor, stressing that the damage was caused by natural forces beyond human control.

“If the building had collapsed, then we would talk about sanctioning the contractor. But this is nature; there was nothing the contractor could have done,” he added.

During the inspection tour, the minister also expressed satisfaction with the progress of several key infrastructure projects within the Federal Capital Territory. These include the OSEX main carriageways, internal roads in Gaduwa District, and access routes to the Wasa Informal Sector.

He disclosed that the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Construction Company, has assured that major components of the OSEX project will be ready for commissioning by May 2026.

Wike further noted that access roads within Gaduwa District are nearing completion, adding that directives have been issued for the installation of protective mesh to prevent encroachment. He also confirmed that street lighting installations in the district are ongoing.

On the Wasa Informal Sector project, the minister said infrastructure development is expected to be completed by the end of May, paving the way for the relocation of traders from the Apo Mechanic Village.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling a long-standing commitment to relocate the traders, a promise previous administrations had failed to implement.

Wike also addressed reports alleging that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was denied access to a venue for its national convention in Abuja, firmly rejecting the claim.

He said neither his office nor the Abuja Investments Company received any formal application from the party to use facilities such as the Eagle Square.

“Nobody has written to us. I am not aware of any such request. Why would we deny them when such engagements generate revenue for public projects?” the minister said.

He further clarified that the Velodrome, previously used by political parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), falls under the jurisdiction of the National Sports Commission and not the FCT Administration.

Reaffirming the administration’s position, Wike stated that all political parties are free to use public venues in Abuja, provided they comply with established procedures and payment requirements.

Residents of Rivers State have expressed deep concern over the persistent economic hardship triggered by rising fuel prices, calling on the Federal Government led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the situation.

In separate interviews with our Port Harcourt correspondent, residents said the high cost of petrol has worsened the cost of living, making it difficult for many families to meet basic needs such as food, transportation, and school fees.

Many of those interviewed lamented that with petrol now selling for about ₦1,300 per litre and above in parts of the state, the burden on ordinary Nigerians has become unbearable.

A commercial driver, Mr. Godswill Joshua, said the sharp increase in fuel prices has led to higher transportation costs and a corresponding rise in the prices of goods and food items.

According to him, unless the Federal Government urgently intervenes, more Nigerians may face severe hunger and malnutrition.

Joshua also expressed concern that the current economic challenges are not receiving the level of attention they deserve, alleging that political actors appear more focused on preparations for the 2027 general elections rather than addressing the welfare of citizens.

He noted that many Nigerians are struggling to survive, with some university graduates resorting to menial jobs such as street hawking to earn a living due to the lack of employment opportunities.

Another driver, Etuk, who operates a commercial bus in Port Harcourt, said the rising cost of fuel has made transportation business increasingly difficult.

He explained that despite raising transport fares, many drivers still struggle to meet daily returns for vehicle owners while also trying to cater for their families.

Etuk appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive steps to stabilize fuel prices and ease the economic pressure on Nigerians.

Residents said urgent government intervention is needed to reduce the cost of petrol and improve living conditions across the country.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into reports that a recent airstrike in Jilli may have caused civilian casualties, following claims that a local market was affected during the operation.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Air Force confirmed that the airstrike was conducted on Saturday, April 11, 2026, as part of ongoing military operations. However, reports later emerged alleging that civilians in the area might have been impacted.

In response, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) directed the immediate deployment of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to the affected community. The team has been tasked with carrying out a comprehensive fact-finding mission to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and verify the allegations.

The Air Force stressed that it treats all reports of civilian harm with the highest level of seriousness and compassion, emphasizing that the protection of innocent lives remains a key priority in its operations.

NAF also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency, noting that it will work closely with relevant authorities and community representatives to ensure a credible and thorough investigation.

While the inquiry is ongoing, the Air Force urged the public and the media to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.

The service further assured that all legitimate concerns would be addressed, reiterating its dedication to safeguarding both national security and civilian populations.

Abia State was created on August 27, 1991, by the military government of Ibrahim Babangida. It was carved out of the old Imo State, with its capital at Umuahia.

Since then, the state has been administered by both military administrations and elected civilian governors. Several military officers governed the state prior to the return of democracy, including Frank Ajobena, Chinyere Ike Nwosu, Temi Ejoor, Moses Fasanya and Anthony Obi.

The civilian governors include Ogbonnaya Onu (1992–1993) during the Third Republic; Orji Uzor Kalu (1999–2007); Theodore Orji (2007–2015); Okezie Ikpeazu (2015–2023); and the incumbent governor, Alex Otti, who assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Indeed, successive administrations have contributed their quota to the growth and development of the state. However, the present administration under Governor Otti has surpassed them all. In other words, Governor Otti’s achievements in transforming the state stand out as remarkable and verifiable.

Apparently, the transformation of the state under Governor Otti can only be likened to that of Nehemiah of Jerusalem. Consider the profile of Nehemiah: he was a high-ranking official in the Persian court in the city of Shushan. Yet, his life of comfort did not diminish his concern for the welfare of his Jewish brothers in faraway Jerusalem. When a delegation from Jerusalem visited and told him that the people were “in a very bad plight” and that the city’s wall was “broken down,” Nehemiah wept.

His concern for Jerusalem and compassion for the Jews living there moved him to act. Within two action-packed months, the entire wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt. Nehemiah later wrote that those who opposed the repair work were forced to acknowledge that “it was from our God that this work has been done.”

Similarly, Dr. Alex Otti came from the banking sector, where he made a name and carved a niche for himself. Like Nehemiah, his life of comfort did not diminish his concern for his people, Ndi Abia, who had been unfairly treated and whose living standards had declined to an all-time low. Determined to change the narrative, he contested and was elected governor of Abia State, with the campaign slogan, “Weep No More.”

Soon after assuming office, Dr. Otti set out to transform the state and raise the living standards of its people.

Realising that a good road network is critical infrastructure for economic growth, safety and social connectivity, he began the construction and reconstruction of strategic and economically viable roads, with emphasis on quality. According to a book on Community Feedback, “Quality infrastructure is linked to reduced transport costs, faster travel time and improved access to essential services and markets.”

The road revolution of Governor Otti began with the expansion of Ossah Road in Umuahia into a six-lane boulevard. The boulevard has since been completed and commissioned, alongside other projects such as the Umuahia–Abiriba Road, Port Harcourt Road in Aba, and the recently reconstructed Omenuko Bridge, among many others.

Beyond road infrastructure, Governor Otti has also recorded milestones in the construction and retrofitting of government offices to enhance the aesthetics of Umuahia and Aba, the economic hub of the South-East. For instance, from Michael Okpara Roundabout through Bank Road stands the newly renovated Michael Okpara Auditorium, the newly built office complex of the Secretary to the State Government, and other impressive structures that make the area attractive and inviting.

Other developments include traffic lights opposite the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, and another at the Aba Road junction. Along the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene highway are ultra-modern bus stops and massive artworks stretching towards Ibeku High School, as well as structures around the Local Government Service Commission, the BCA Administrative Complex and the Abia State Secretariat.

Furthermore, an ultra-modern Central Bus Terminal at Isi Gate is nearing completion. Indeed, the cities of Umuahia and Aba are gradually being rebuilt, beautified and made more orderly.

According to a journal on Environmental Research and Public Health, “City beautification is a key component of urban regeneration. It aims to cultivate a more civilised urban lifestyle and attract both investment and highly skilled workers.” In other words, beautification of a town or state fosters community pride, improves mental well-being and drives economic growth. It is often described as more than cosmetic enhancement but a reflection of the healthy will of its residents.

As Sunday Adelaja once observed, “Without order in your life, you will realise that you will be busy without commensurate results.” Rajendra Muthye also noted that “orderliness is the prerequisite for being on time anywhere and everywhere.”

In all, like Nehemiah of Jerusalem, Governor Alex Otti is gradually rebuilding Abia State. Therefore, it is imperative that Ndi Abia give him the necessary support and cooperation to realise the new Abia of our collective dream.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has paid glowing tribute to the late Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, describing him as a respected traditional ruler whose life reflected peace, dignity, and selfless service.

The governor spoke on Saturday at the funeral service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Opobo, where he joined dignitaries, traditional rulers, and residents in bidding farewell to the monarch, who died at 83.

Fubara noted that the late king’s reign was marked by stability and restraint, especially during a prolonged succession dispute that spanned more than two decades, adding that his calm leadership helped preserve peace in the kingdom.

According to him, “He was a man of class and dignity who carried everyone along. Even in difficult times, he remained calm, and that helped sustain peace in Opobo Kingdom.”

The governor said the monarch’s legacy would remain significant in the history of the kingdom, urging historians and scholars to properly document his contributions and leadership journey.

He also used the occasion to counsel members of the royal family, advising them against internal disputes over inheritance and stressing the importance of unity and personal responsibility.

“What you inherit are assets, not success. Everyone must work for their own success,” he said, warning that conflict within the family would undermine the peaceful legacy left behind by the late monarch.

Fubara added that material possessions were temporary and should not become a source of division, urging the family to focus on preserving the values the late king stood for.

He described the late monarch as a fulfilled leader whose life and reign would continue to serve as an example for future generations.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that its Chairman engaged in partisan activity on the platform X (formerly Twitter), describing the report as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Chairman, the Commission said the alleged post attributed to the INEC Chairman was fabricated and formed part of a “malicious and coordinated campaign of calumny” aimed at undermining the credibility of the electoral body.

INEC clarified that the Chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never made any political or partisan comments, either publicly or privately.

The Commission warned that the fake post was designed to discredit its leadership at a time it is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming elections.

According to the statement, this is not the first instance of such misinformation, noting that cybercriminals have previously created fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud members of the public. It added that several of these accounts have been tracked and reported to security agencies.

INEC said it is currently working with relevant security and cyber-intelligence agencies to identify and prosecute those behind the latest incident, stressing that the act violates provisions of the Cybercrimes Act.

The Commission urged Nigerians to disregard the false information and rely only on verified official communication channels for credible updates.

It reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, assuring the public that it remains focused on its constitutional mandate despite attempts to distract its operations.

Abia-born businessman and seasoned entrepreneur, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, has called on Nigerian youths to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and responsible leadership as critical drivers of sustainable national development.

Anyaso made the call while delivering the opening address as Chairman of the 5th Anniversary and Extraordinary Convention of Progressive Abia Youths, themed “Reimagining Governance: Youth Leadership, Technology and Sustainable National Development — Appraising Our Journey, Organizing the Future.”

He said the era of passive participation among young people is over, urging youths to move beyond complaints and become active stakeholders in governance, economic productivity, and nation-building.

According to him, entrepreneurship remains one of the most effective training grounds for leadership, as it builds discipline, accountability, problem-solving capacity, and economic independence—qualities required for effective governance.

Speaking on recent developments in Abia State, Anyaso commended the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti for what he described as a visible transition from promises to performance.

He noted that renewed public confidence, ongoing infrastructure development, and purposeful governance have become evident in the state, stressing that such progress must be protected through continuity.

Anyaso therefore urged stakeholders and young people to support reforms aimed at repositioning Abia State for sustainable growth.

He further challenged youths to adopt a new mindset focused on value creation, technology adoption, skills development, and innovation rather than dependence on government employment.

Declaring the convention open, Anyaso encouraged participants to think boldly, build capacity, lead with integrity, and position themselves as architects of Nigeria’s future.

The convention attracted youth leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders committed to advancing youth inclusion in governance and national development.

The post Anyaso Urges Youths to Embrace Enterprise, Leadership first appeared on National Ambassador News.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly circulating a fabricated video falsely portraying a terrorist attack in Abuja.

The suspect was arrested following the viral circulation of the video on April 9, 2026, which appeared to show gunfire and an ongoing security incident within the nation’s capital, sparking panic among some residents.

CP, FCT Abuja

Addressing journalists on Friday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said preliminary investigations revealed that the video was deliberately manipulated and falsely presented as a real-time attack.

According to him, digital forensic analysis traced the origin of the clip to a resident identified as Pam Joshua.

He explained that the suspect allegedly compiled the video using unrelated footage and gunshot sound effects sourced from the social media platform TikTok, and circulated it with captions designed to incite fear and public alarm.

“The content was entirely fabricated and falsely presented as an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja,” the Commissioner said, adding that there was no security breach in the Federal Capital Territory.

Sanusi assured residents that Abuja remains safe and that security agencies are maintaining vigilance to protect lives and property across the city.

The police command warned social media users and content creators against spreading false information, noting that such actions pose serious risks to public safety and are punishable under the law.

Authorities said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Residents were also urged to remain calm, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to security agencies through official channels.

Residents and traders around the Industrial Layout in Aba have recounted tense moments of panic and uncertainty after a fire outbreak engulfed stacks of plastic crates at a facility linked to Nigerian Breweries Plc on Thursday afternoon, with economic losses estimated to run into hundreds of millions of naira.

The blaze, which started at about 4:10 p.m., quickly sent thick smoke billowing into the sky, drawing crowds of onlookers and sparking fears that the fire could spread to nearby homes, businesses and petrol stations in the densely populated commercial area.

Eyewitnesses said what began as a faint column of smoke rapidly escalated into a raging fire as flames spread across piles of empty plastic crates stored at the open facility.

“I first noticed smoke rising from the direction of the depot,” said Mr. Ibenyi Okafor, a trader who operates near the facility. “Within minutes, the fire spread across the crates. The smoke became very thick and people started shouting and running.”

Many traders said they initially feared the inferno might reach surrounding buildings, forcing some shop owners and food vendors to hurriedly remove valuables from their stalls.

Mrs. Ngozi Nwankwo, who runs a small eatery close to the depot, described the moment the fire intensified as chaotic.

“People were screaming and calling the fire service,” she said. “Some workers tried to move items away from the fire, but the flames were already too strong. Everyone was afraid it might spread to nearby buildings.”

The facility where the fire occurred is located in an open space leased from the Nigerian Railway Corporation, and company officials later clarified that only empty plastic crates were affected while the main brewing plant remained unharmed.

Emergency responders from the Abia State Fire Service and other agencies arrived shortly after the alarm was raised, battling the blaze for several hours before finally bringing it under control shortly before 6 p.m.

For many residents, the sight of firefighters working tirelessly to contain the flames brought relief that what could have become a major disaster was eventually prevented.

Officials confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded in the incident.

During an inspection visit to the site, Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti commended the swift and coordinated response of emergency agencies, noting that their prompt intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading further.

“Looking at that place, it’s probably the last place that you’ll expect to have a fire incident because it was just on its own, in an open field, so anything could have happened,” the governor said.

“It could be a match, it could be a cigarette or anything but you should be prepared like the boys scout will say while we pray it doesn’t happen again,” he added.

The governor also explained that the location of the affected facility initially made it difficult to immediately identify it as belonging to the brewery.

“It was much later after the incident have been contained that I knew it was Nigerian brewery because it is far away from here. When we tried to locate the place, from our digital device, it didn’t point to Nigeria Breweries,” he said.

Governor Otti further acknowledged the long-standing presence of the brewery in Abia State and assured the company of continued government support.

“You have been here for almost seventy years and that’s good. All we owe you is an enabling environment for your business to continue to do well,” he said.

“This is a place where all Nigerians gather and are working together. That is what the new Abia speaks about. Here we don’t have state of origin and we are all equal.”

Company officials said the fire started after smoke was detected at the storage area, prompting workers to activate internal emergency procedures before contacting external fire services.

Engr. Benjamin Okore, Chief Engineer at the brewery, explained that the affected section was not part of the main brewing plant.

“The place where the fire incident happened is an open space, a lease facility by the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he said. “Empty crates without bottles were affected while the main brewery plant was not impacted.”

He added that the company deployed its internal firefighting equipment and hydrant systems immediately after the alarm was raised, while also requesting assistance from government fire agencies.

“There was so much team spirit and speed in action. They arrived on time and together as teamwork we were able to contain the fire completely,” Okore said.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, residents around the area say the incident has renewed concerns about fire safety in the city’s busy commercial districts, noting that the consequences could have been far worse if the flames had spread beyond the storage area.

As Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. marks his birthday on April 11, 2026, many across Obingwa-West State Constituency and beyond are reflecting not just on his current role in the Abia State House of Assembly, but on a long history of service that has consistently left meaningful footprints in the lives of ordinary people.

For many public officials, offices come and go. But for Erondu Jnr., the impact of the offices he once occupied has continued to speak long after he left them.

Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr

From his time as Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area to his service in the Abia State Government and other strategic positions, his years in public office were marked by a deliberate commitment to improving the welfare of the people, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

Those who witnessed his tenure in Obingwa still recall a period when leadership was closely connected to the grassroots. Many of the interventions he initiated then; community support programmes, assistance for struggling families, and empowerment opportunities for youths among others, laid the foundation for the larger programmes he runs today.

Even after leaving those offices, the spirit of benevolence never slowed nor abated

Across communities in Obingwa LGA, countless families can point to moments when Erondu Jnr. stepped in quietly to provide helps like: paying school fees, supporting small businesses, providing shelter for the homeless, and offering assistance to widows, farmers, and young people seeking opportunities among others.

These acts of generosity have translated into measurable outcomes. Thousands of students who benefited from educational sponsorships are today pursuing higher education or building careers. Farmers empowered with agricultural support have increased productivity and improved their livelihoods. Families once without homes now live with dignity in houses built through his interventions.

Perhaps more telling than the projects themselves is the response from the people.

In villages and communities across the constituency, his name often comes up in conversations about leadership that listens and responds. Beneficiaries of his programmes frequently say that their appreciation goes beyond words, insisting that the depth of their support for him is rooted in years of visible commitment to their welfare.

This strong grassroots connection remains why many believe that Erondu Jnr.’s journey in leadership is far from its peak.

As preparations build for the birthday celebration and empowerment programme in his honour, the event is expected to once again reflect his long-standing culture of giving back to the people. The initiative will feature the distribution of 150 brand-new motorcycles, alongside 15 mini buses, trucks, tippers, and cars, providing beneficiaries with critical tools for transportation, logistics, and income generation.

For many recipients, these items represent more than material support; they are opportunities for economic independence and long-term stability, capable of transforming households and supporting livelihoods across communities.

Supporters often argue that the level of development he has facilitated even within limited opportunities demonstrates what could be achieved if he were entrusted with broader responsibilities. They believe his experience, network, and understanding of community needs position him to attract even greater democratic dividends to Obingwa LGA, Abia South, and Abia State at large.

As the celebration unfolds, many see it not simply as a festivity but as a reaffirmation of the enduring bond between a leader and his people.

For those who have experienced his kindness and interventions over the years, the message is clear: leadership for Elder Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. has never been about occupying positions, rather it has always been about using every opportunity to touch lives.

And by the grace of God, many believe that if greater opportunities come his way, the scale of his impact will only grow bigger, bringing even greater transformation to the people he has long served.

The Abia State Leadership Caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced the party from the actions of Don Norman Obinna, declaring that he lacks the authority to act or speak as the party’s chairman in the state.

The position was reached during a meeting of party leaders held at the ADC State Secretariat in Umuahia, where the caucus reviewed the ongoing leadership dispute and reaffirmed its commitment to due process, party discipline, and the rule of law.

Among those present at the meeting were Senator Austine Akobundu, representing Abia Central; Uko Nkole; and Okey Igwe, alongside other party stakeholders.

Presenting the communiqué on behalf of the caucus, Nkole cited a subsisting interim injunction issued by the Abia State High Court on December 3, 2025, restraining Obinna from parading himself or acting as the chairman of the party in Abia State pending the determination of the case.

The caucus also referenced the findings of the ADC South-East Zonal Disciplinary Committee contained in a report dated September 25, 2025, which clarified the party’s position regarding Obinna’s conduct and status.

According to the caucus, Obinna’s continued claim to the leadership of the party in the state is unlawful and misleading, describing it as a violation of party discipline and a disregard for a valid court order. It therefore declared that any meetings, directives, or public engagements carried out by him in the name of the party are null and void.

The caucus reaffirmed Kanu O. Kanu as the Acting State Chairman of the ADC in Abia State pending the conduct of the party’s state congresses.

It also urged the general public, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to disregard any statements or actions attributed to Obinna in the capacity of ADC chairman.

The caucus further expressed confidence in the leadership of the party at the national level under David Mark, reiterating its commitment to unity, discipline, and respect for constituted authority within the party.

The post Abia ADC Caucus Disowns Obinna, Reaffirms Kanu as Acting Chairman first appeared on National Ambassador News.

The Civil Service Commission has announced that 50 additional nurses will soon be recruited into the state civil service following the approval of Governor Alex Chioma Otti.

Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eno Jerry, disclosed this during a press briefing while providing an update on the ongoing recruitment process in the state, particularly within the health sector.

According to her, the earlier recruitment exercise conducted by the Commission was designed to address critical manpower gaps in the health sector but was limited to an approved quota of 500 positions. As a result, several qualified candidates could not be absorbed at the time.

Jerry explained that the Commission anticipated future manpower needs and therefore retained the records of those qualified but unabsorbed candidates in its Human Resource database.

With the governor’s recent approval for the engagement of 50 additional nurses, the Commission said it would first select candidates from this pool of previously screened applicants who met the requirements but were not accommodated during the initial exercise.

She added that if the number falls short after exhausting the pool, the Commission would then consider candidates who were earlier deemed unsuitable solely because they had not completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme at the time of the recruitment.

According to the Commission, some of those candidates have since completed their NYSC and may now qualify for appointment.

Jerry emphasized that the process is intended to promote fairness, efficiency and transparency while ensuring that already vetted candidates are given priority.

She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to merit, due process and improved service delivery in the state civil service.

The post Abia to Recruit Additional Nurses – CSC first appeared on National Ambassador News.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called for stronger collaboration with Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) to revive the Bonny General Hospital, stressing that the company’s continued success is important to the economic wellbeing of both Rivers State and Nigeria.

The governor made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NLNG, Adeleye Falade, during a courtesy visit at Government House in Port Harcourt.

Fubara assured the NLNG leadership of his administration’s readiness to sustain a cordial working relationship with the company, noting that supporting major corporate organisations operating in the state would ultimately translate into broader economic gains for the state and the country.

According to him, the prosperity of government, businesses and citizens are closely linked, making collaboration between the public and private sectors essential.

“We are the ones here. If we don’t support you and you don’t succeed, we also will not succeed, and the country will not succeed. So you can always count on our support,” the governor said.

Fubara also appealed to NLNG to assist in restoring Bonny General Hospital by reintroducing incentive programmes that previously attracted qualified medical personnel to the facility.

He recalled that the hospital once operated effectively due to NLNG’s strong community support and incentive schemes, which made postings to Bonny Island attractive for healthcare workers. However, he lamented that the facility has deteriorated in recent years, forcing residents to seek treatment from unqualified providers.

The governor revealed that the state government had already initiated steps to rehabilitate the hospital following a tragic incident in which a patient reportedly died in a quack clinic, a development that exposed the urgent need to improve healthcare services in the area.

While urging NLNG to complement the government’s intervention, Fubara emphasised that strengthening healthcare infrastructure remains critical to the development and wellbeing of host communities.

He also commended NLNG for sustaining operations and recording success despite the country’s challenging business climate, attributing its longevity to a model that allows private sector expertise to manage operations under government oversight.

Earlier, NLNG’s Managing Director, Falade, thanked the governor for maintaining a strong partnership with the company, particularly in tackling pipeline vandalism and ensuring a stable operating environment.

He noted that improved security conditions have enabled the company to expand operations, resulting in increased productivity and revenue.

Falade reiterated NLNG’s commitment to the socio-economic development of Rivers State, highlighting the company’s investments in education, youth empowerment and community development projects.

According to him, NLNG has spent billions of naira renovating schools under its General Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) framework, alongside implementing vocational training programmes aimed at building local capacity in the Niger Delta.

He disclosed that the company has generated more than $30 billion in revenue since its establishment, with the Federal Government holding a 49 per cent stake. The firm has also contributed about $9 billion in taxes and over ₦250 billion to the Rivers State Government through employee tax payments.

Falade expressed optimism that the company’s performance would continue to improve, projecting stronger returns in 2026, driven by a peaceful operating environment and continued support from government and host communities.

In a quiet corner of Bende Local Government Area, a modest school continues to tell a powerful story about purpose, community service, and long-term impact.

Nearly two decades ago, at the age of 28, philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Chima Anyaso made a decision that would shape the lives of many children in his hometown. Instead of focusing solely on personal advancement, he established the Ahuoma Anyaso Education Free Nursery and Primary School in Bende, Abia State, offering free early education to children from less privileged families.

The initiative, which began about 18 years ago, was designed to remove financial barriers to basic education for families who might otherwise struggle to send their children to school. Since then, the institution has quietly continued its mission—providing access to foundational learning for dozens of pupils in the community.

Residents say the school has become more than just a place of learning. For many families in Bende, it represents opportunity, hope, and the belief that education should be accessible to every child regardless of background.

What makes the story even more personal is that Anyaso’s commitment has extended beyond simply building the school. From time to time, his own children have attended the same village institution, learning alongside other pupils from the community.

Observers say the gesture sends a powerful message about equality and shared experience, especially in a society where social status often determines access to opportunities.

Community members note that the school has helped nurture young minds while strengthening a sense of unity among families in the area.

Nearly two decades after it was founded, the Ahuoma Anyaso Education Free Nursery and Primary School continues to operate as a symbol of grassroots philanthropy—demonstrating how individual initiative can make a lasting difference in local communities.

For many in Bende, the school stands as a reminder that meaningful legacy is not always measured in grand displays, but in sustained efforts that uplift others and invest in the future.

The post Chima Anyaso’s Free School in Bende Reflects Commitment to Community first appeared on National Ambassador News.
